Chaim Bloom On Bogaerts, Pitching, Offseason Additions

By Mark Polishuk | December 5, 2022 at 9:34pm CDT

9:34PM: Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe has some updates on the pitching search, citing right-hander Tommy Kahnle as a target for the Red Sox bullpen.  The Sox haven’t made much progress in recent talks with Eovaldi, and while the Red Sox are known to have interest in Kodai Senga, the Japanese star hasn’t yet visited Boston while making the rounds to visit other teams.

On the hitting front, Abreu was offered a three-year deal “in the low- to mid-$40MM range,” well below the three years and $59.5MM Abreu received from Houston.

6:47PM: Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom spoke with the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier (Twitter thread) and other reporters today at the Winter Meetings, outlining his team’s extensive plans for the rest of the offseason.  Chris Martin and Joely Rodriguez represent Boston’s most notable additions thus far, and Bloom said the Sox could yet add at least two more relievers to augment the bullpen.

All in all, Bloom said the team wanted to add “seven, eight, nine” players to “build the team we want to have.”  This list includes three or four position players, as well as at least one starting pitcher who can bring “upside, leadership, and consistency” to the rotation, as well as innings.

On paper, it looks like the Red Sox are aiming for a repeat of their first three offseasons under Bloom’s leadership, which saw the club made a wide array of moves big and small to shuffle up the roster.  This semi-overhaul added both everyday players and more complementary parts to the roster, with a general focus in acquiring controllable players and veterans on shorter-term contracts — with the major exception of Trevor Story, and his six-year, $140MM pact from last March.

Bloom’s tactics have drawn a mixed reaction at best from Red Sox Nation, as the team’s last three seasons have consisted of one trip to the ALCS (in 2021) and two last-place finishes (2020 and 2022) in the AL East.  Several of Bloom’s less-heralded moves have panned out, but several have also not borne fruit, and Boston’s relative lack of spending on big-ticket players has also drawn criticism given the team’s traditional large-market ways.  The Red Sox have remained at least a top-10 payroll team over Bloom’s three seasons and even exceeded the luxury tax line last year, though many of the team’s biggest expenditures were signed before Bloom joined the organization.

The Red Sox have quite a bit of money coming off the books this winter, of course, with Xander Bogaerts being the club’s most prominent free agent.  Reports from the weekend indicated that the Sox weren’t one of the primary members of Bogaerts’ market, and that the Red Sox had yet to make “a competitive offer” to the shortstop.

Bloom pushed back against that speculation today, saying “have certainly made offers to him, we’ve been engaged, and we’ll stay engaged.”  Bogaerts is still a chief priority for the Red Sox, though Bloom expected the shortstop to check out all of his options in his first trip to free agency.

Re-signing Bogaerts and solidifying the shortstop position for years to come would naturally have a big impacton Boston’s plans to remake its position-player mix.  Bloom noted that Story or Enrique Hernandez could potentially take over at shortstop if Bogaerts departed, but if he stayed, Story would likely remain at second base and Hernandez could bounce around the diamond, perhaps primarily staying in center field.

Story and Hernandez figure to play everyday roles somewhere, and Rafael Devers has third base covered and Alex Verdugo will get regular work at one or both of the corner outfield spots.  However, there’s quite of bit of flux elsewhere around the diamond and quite a bit more opportunity to add new faces, depending on how much playing time the Red Sox want to give to such younger players as Triston Casas, Jarren Duran, or Jeter Downs.  For instance, the Sox technically have plenty of first base/DH candidates in Casas, Bobby Dalbec, and Eric Hosmer, but the team still made a big push to sign Jose Abreu before Abreu decided to join the Astros.

Pursuing Abreu would seem to indicate a greater willingness to spend on the front office’s part.  A very big contract will obviously be necessary to re-sign Bogaerts, and bringing Nathan Eovaldi back will likely also require a healthy multi-year commitment.  Bloom said that incumbent free agents Eovaldi and Michael Wacha were both still possibilities as the team explores the pitching market.

You contrast the ‘latest on arron judge’ quotes from cashman with what bloom said about Bogey.

One guy is lying through his teeth, or, at least trying to twist truths, and, it isn’t the lines about Judge.

Chaim doesn’t even come across as believable.

GASox – With Bloom it’s not his nose that grows, it’s his chin.

But I hafta say this was a truly great article by Mark. He nailed it in so many ways.

          1) No progress with Eovaldi
          2) Sox are not one of the teams that Senga has visited
          3) Sox made an offer well below what Abreu got from Houston
          4) Lack of spending on big ticket expenditures
          5) This year’s payroll was deceiving because much of it was inherited
          6) No legit offers to Xander

Bloom is the guy that goes to the supermarket and has no concept of today’s prices. Rather than pay for Charmin, he buys a generic single-ply toilet paper instead.

Actually, I think I was in the supermarket with bloom one day.

True story: we were in the soda aisle when we overheard an argument between a male voice and a female voice.

Male voice said “You know, we could save a lot of money if you would just use both sides of the toilet paper. I don’t understand why people insist on just using one side before throwing it in the toilet.”

Now, that was back in the late 90s/early 2000s but i swear it must’ve been Chaim. It was coming from the next aisle over though where they sold the TP so I never saw what they looked like. Sounds like his kind of idea. True story though.

GASox – It does feel like the team is descending back to 2014-2015 levels, doesn’t it? The similarities are endless.

For example, in 2014 it started with the Red Sox lowballing Lester. In 2022 it started with the Red Sox lowballing Xander.

I just hope this time John Henry realizes the error of his ways as quickly as he did in 2015.

He doesn’t want Bogaerts but he needs to look like he is trying. After Bogey signs, he extends Devers for 11/300.

Then he makes a trade for Daulton Varsho – risky and pricey. Gives us a corner OF and shores up back up Catcher position.

Brings back Vazquez, Eovaldi and Wacha.

    Signs Taillon and Jose Iglesias.

If Turner just got 11/300, Devers is going to want more. He initially was asking around $300mm. Turner just raised everyone’s asking prices. Correra 400mm, X 350mm, Devers now worth 400mm. Same goes for Jduge.

I don’t think X gets more than Turner. And i also don’t think Correa gets 400mil. Dodgers will likely make a splash at winter meetings now that they’ve missed out on Verlander, and i think it’ll be Dansby. I’m hoping he stays in ATL, but i bet Freddie is doing his best recruiting job right now to bring him to the left coast.

So, you’re basically trading Bogaerts for Varsho and adding Taillon. Less the prospects.

This makes the team better than last season?

The problem is what you’d have to give up for Varsho; as going by Baseball Trade Values to acquire Varsho alone would require a package akin to: Marcelo Mayer, Tanner Houck, and an additional live arm project close to MLB like Jacob Wallace.

I’m not sure the Red Sox offer anything approaching that without also signing Correa, but I also think that package might entice the DBacks enough to pull the trigger.

I can personally see the appeal of a bullpen of: Houck, Mantiply, Ginkel, Nelson, Castro, Martin, Melancon, and one more signing or the winner of a ST battle or mid-season debut of Bukauskas, Vargas, Martinez, or Wallace.

Not to mention the prospect of having an affordable core of Carroll, Lawler, Mayer, Thomas, McCarthy, and Jones (only if he can complete an accelerated timeline). That’s the makings of a Squad right there.

I found that interview interesting. At no point did Bloom say that the Red Sox had made an offer to Bogaerts this offseason.

He was asked several times to clarify his statement that they had made offers to Bogaerts. He never once came out and said that they had. He just said that they were “engaged with him”.

I found his dancing around that question telling.

Small Market Bloom is out of his element. Letting Bogie sign elsewhere will show other free agents that the Sox have no loyalty to franchise mainstays. Abreu gets it.

FA pitching is very expensive and usually pretty risky with a bunch of declining years as cost of business, or, an overpay of $35m+/yr short term these days.

You’re almost better off keeping Bogey and using Mayer to headline a package for top end young controllable/mlb ready SP. I’m looking at you Miami.

That may be accurate or not. If they have or haven’t made an offer can be telling but in different ways.
If Bogaerts people told Bloom that they would have a chance to beat the proposal then it makes sense why they haven’t made a new offer. Why bid against yourself?

:” A competitive offer” is a loaded response, Competitive to the actual market or competitive to what you offered before? It goes both ways.

Sox had their chance to lock X up over the last few seasons. They didn’t do it and will now pay the price whether they sign him or not.

LOL, no doubt Sox fans are crazy. Based on what I know, I may love your wife!
There are also different levels of fans. Fans that lived most of their life through the drought and fans that haven’t . There is a difference.

Not that one is better than the other but there is a difference in expectations.

As far as the offer goes it doesn’t mean much. Sox obliviously made an offer at some point. We’re way past that. The question that remains is whether the Sox will have the chance to make one final offer.
Based on what I know they haven’t made a serious offer to him. I’ve been saying this for a couple years.

You know what polar-opposite of Dewey, I’d say there’s 4 rough levels/groupings of fans:

Drought A: lived the drought years. See what ownership was capable of pre-bloom and know revenue only keeps increasing. Don’t want to return to austerity drought years.

Drought B: lived the drought years. Say a couple bad bloom years doesn’t compare.

Non-drought A: have known nothing but regularly competitive squads, or, ones that should’ve been but were snake bit. Expect excellence since it’s all they knew.

Non-drought B: the kool-aid drinkers who buy the inconsistent party line chaim and company throw out in interviews. Also blindly believe in what their government tells them they should want because they don’t know better. We can call them the lemmings.

Exactly, Clipper – Bloom knows how to ‘say nothing’ the right way. My favourite remains “build the farm system,” as if that’s a groundbreaking concept. If that is Bloom’s focus (defensive position), why didn’t Bloom trade Eovaldi & Martinez at the deadline for more of his prized prospects? Why not trade XB for a prospect haul since there is no evidence he’s a “priority” signing at all? “Build the farm system” – right.

Bloom has no plan. You know what I like in a GM? “Upside, leadership, and consistency.”

Boston’s FO hardly leaks anything. Last offseason, the only two sources of legit Red Sox leaks were the former hitting coach’s son and a youtuber who had about 40k subscribers. The Passans and Rosenthals of the world were leaking fake info from agents trying to drive their clients’ salaries up by connecting them to a big spending team (Baez was the biggest example.)

Chaim’s statements could mean a Correa signing tomorrow or a bunch of spare parts in early February. Who knows

Fletch: Exactly. There was no leak of the Rodriguez and Martin signings. There was no leak of who they were targeting in the draft. People had them drafting a college outfielder and they drafted a high school shortstop.

No one expected the SS to still be there when they got to pick. There was always interest in the players that were expected to be off the board already.

Stymeed: I am talking abo HS SS Mikey Romero drafted toward the end of the first round this year. Are you talking about him or HS SS Marcelo Mayer drafted 4th overall last year? If you are talking about Mayer, I agree, but I was not using him as an example.

Mikey was seen as an early-to-mid second rounder. He wasn’t in the top-50 of BA, MLB, or PG’s top draft prospects and he signed for nearly 700k under slot. Good pick though. Early reports are positive on his hit tool

      Boston’s FO hardly leaks anything.
      ================================

I doubt most FO’s leak real information. I presume they’ll leak disinformation, but if fans think that Cashman is really telling reporters what he’s doing, then I am inviting those fans to my poker game.

Fletcher – Exactly, I can attest it’s not that hard to come across information if you’re in the right place at the right time. Even just walking by a front office guy talking on his cell phone can be revealing.

Joe is quite naive to think the only way you can get information is by speaking directly to the CBO.

We are the new Tampa bay Rays! Yes you may make the playoffs with odds and ends but the good teams have least two studs that rise to the occasion! Sign Deavers! This market has a lot suspect parts that ready to break! Boston is not an easy place to play! If you can find players that do then lock them up long term!

Bloom will be gone if he stumbles around for another year. You can’t be in the rich Boston market and do cheap “value” deals, have a utility guy suddenly be forced to be your RF because you traded your productive guy for nothing to save a few bucks, get no useful arms for your pen for 3 years, trade and let walk your star players and replace them with AAA guys, bungle the roster so you end up in last place and not trade guys who walk while your team stays over the LT because you failed to move a few million, and expect to keep your job when even the front office staff around you whisper about what a disorganized fool you are. Tick, tick, Bloom!

Can’t blame Bloom for everything! John Henry has the final say and think he is still in Miami! Stars get signed if the owner says”Make it happen!”! We had to overpay for FA’s in the past! Now it’s going to be even harder!

You can blame Bloom for managing to just stay over the luxury tax with a last place team despite every opportunity to duck below it. Draft and international signing penalties come with that. The JBJ trade was ridiculously bad and a fireable offense.

Honestly, I don’t think we should resign Bogaerts. Marcelo Mayer is coming in a couple of years and by then if we still have Devers, he will probably be the Designated Hitter. We need to extend Devers fast and then we need to add or trade for an outfielder or two, a catcher, and an Ace or two. It time to see if Bloom will spend or trade his so precious prospects.

Only a single 4th rounder. Same for eovaldi if he leaves too.

Assuming both left, it could’ve been 2 picks at the tail end of comp b round (basically 2nd rounders) PLUS 2 more picks in the 5th.

And, as said before and elsewhere, you’ve got your normal penalties for being a repeat offender on the cbt vis a vis signings you make to QO FAs and in the international pools…

Bloom has only made one good move since he came and that is picking up Whitlock. The Renfroe trade was a gigantic bust, Betts trade gave us nothing but Dugie, and in the Ronaldo Hernandez trade we got fleeced out of a good reliever we needed.

7-8-9 players!!! None of whom you have ever heard of. None who will move the needle one iota! You get rid of 4A players off your 40 man, then you add different 4A players, and you still finish last in AL east. Until Bloom is gone and John Henry either sells the team or sees the light nothing good can happen! Remdog in rolling over! Maybe Henry can move Bloom to Liverpool FC! I’m sure he would be better at managing a soccer club, and he wouldn’t need the amount of Security he’s going to need in Boston this year!

Let’s win the next offseason!!!! …Not. This roster and this organization is in shambles. Hard to watch this. Don’t develop any pitching whatsoever. The roster is an absolute mess with little upside. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. Bogaerts is going to walk. They will fish around the bottom of the tank and sign one or two guys and act like it’s something to get excited about. And Red Sox Nation don’t be fooled—help is not coming from the farm. Not much of it anyway. This is about as bad as I’ve seen it in 30 years of paying attention. I loathe this front office.
