Giants Claim Miguel Yajure From Pirates

By Anthony Franco | December 2, 2022 at 6:48pm CDT

The Giants announced they’ve claimed right-hander Miguel Yajure off waivers from the Pirates. San Francisco’s 40-man roster count jumps to 38, while Pittsburgh’s tally falls to 38.

Yajure joined the professional ranks as an amateur signee with the Yankees in 2015. A few seasons of strong performance in the low minors put him on the prospect radar by 2019, when he posted a 2.26 ERA across 127 2/3 innings in High-A. Yajure made a brief MLB debut in 2020, when the minor league campaign was canceled by the pandemic. The following offseason, he was one of four players dealt from New York to Pittsburgh for Jameson Taillon.

Pittsburgh viewed the Venezuela native as a possible short-term rotation replacement, but his production stalled out in their organization. Yajure lost a good chunk of the 2021 season to injury and only made four MLB appearances and nine starts at Triple-A. He stayed mostly healthy in 2022 but had a disappointing year. Yajure pitched 12 times (11 in relief) at the big league level, allowing an 8.88 ERA with as many walks as strikeouts through 24 1/3 innings. His production at their top affiliate in Indianapolis wasn’t much better, as he managed only a 6.09 ERA across 54 2/3 frames. He started 14 of his 16 appearances in Triple-A.

While Yajure has yet to find any MLB success, he rated as the #17 prospect in the Pirates system at Baseball America as recently as the start of the 2022 campaign. He’s drawn praise from evaluators for solid control and a balanced four-pitch arsenal that includes a curveball, cutter and changeup. The Giants are active as any team on the waiver wire, and they’ll again turn to that market for a 24-year-old upper level depth option.

San Francisco’s affinity for tinkering at the back of the 40-man roster could make it difficult for Yajure to hold his spot all offseason. He’s out of minor league option years, so he’d have to break camp with the big league club if he’s still on the roster come Opening Day.

When did the Pirates DFA Yajure or Sanchez? How are they claimed before ever being listed as DFAs?

What a bad move by the Pirates. Yajure is going to be a quality arm sooner rather then later.

Nah, he was way too far down on the depth chart. I’d say they’re gearing up to actually announce a few signing. To be honest though, I would’ve DFA’d DUJ before Yajure.

He’s 24 years old, and hasn’t been that type of pitcher yet
If there was that much potential, the Giants wouldn’t have been the team that claimed him.

Fre5hwind, as a fellow Pirates fan (God help us all) Yajure kind of stunk. This is good for the league because he will rebuild his value and then everyone can laugh at the Pirates more and feel better about their own sorry teams.

They. seem to be opening up spots for Rule 5 selections but I would have thought that they would have dropped Vilade and Underwood.
I am OK with Sanchez but I think that Yajure has some promise even though he has not shown much.Could be a mistake.
Selecting third in the Rule 5 draft should guarantee at least one decent player and maybe two.

I have seen him before. He has the stuff to be a under 4 era pitcher. Even under 3. If they dfa him I fully expect him to be claimed. A smart team might even trade for him.

Dream-He May have good stuff but he has never shown it in four years in the .
He is the definition of mediocrity at best.
The Pirates have gotten to the point, unlike one year ago, when these 40 man roster positions are pretty much filled up.
The Pirates will not get any better with pitchers like this on the team.
He was a waiver claim from the Cubs, and needs to be the one now that they need to get rid of to open up a roster spot for the veteran starter that they need.
He is 28 years old.Maybe he can find it with another team with better pitching coaches, but it isn’t going to happen with the Pirates or it would have happened by now.
I was surprised that they did not keep Yajure mostly because he was traded for and is still young and did not have a lengthy stay on the ML roster.I have to trust that BC knows a lot more than any of us but the Pirates now have much better relief pitchers than underwood has ever shown.

@Mendoza Line 215 He has shown it plenty. Not era wise or walks but if you watch him and know how evaluate talent and or dig a lil deeper into his numbers he definitely shows it. He was also traded for. Not a waiver claim. I wouldn’t lose sleep if they dfa him but can see why they haven’t yet.

Problem is, Dream, it’s clear that unless you’re a fan of fastballs down Main Street or hanging curves that are dead red, it’s clear there’s little instruction going on here. Not sure what you see in this guy but in Pittsburgh, potential alone isn’t going to cut it.
I mean let’s be serious here. Have you ever seen a pitching staff that continually gives in to hitters and gets raked? It’s really incredible.
          And Underwood tops that list

Dream- My guess is that BC is trying to find a trade partner for him.
I couldn’t find my website that I check for transactions but you are right they traded for him.
He had some good games but was inconsistent and methinks that they are eyeing a reliever in the Rule 5 draft.
They are real close to having a full roster of either decent players or promising ones of varying degrees.
But of course that does not mean that they will come close to a winning season.

@tiredolddude My evaluation is of Underwood and nothing else. Pittsburgh pitching coaches are middle of the back at best. I have no reason to be confident in them making Underwood better. I can just see why they want to keep trying.

@Mendoza Line 215 I don’t have any insight but a trade would make sense. If I can see the potential in him then another team could as well. Pirates have a lot of relief options and Underwood have some of the least team control remaining would be a good choice.

Up to a projected 330 million offer by the Yankees for Judge. Might hit 380-400 million by the time he signs. I feel Yankees bring him back and Giants bow out at the steep price. Unless Mets sneak in at last minute, Yankees gives Judge the biggest contract to any OFer surpassing (I believe) Mike Trout annually contract. I think Trout is around 37 million annually and the highest paying OF/position player in the game. Judge is going to top that by a few million.

Doesn’t mean it won’t lead to success either. Success in the minors typically generates a chance given at the major league level. Reynolds is the perfect example. Never top 100 ranked but raked at the minor league level got a chance due to injury.

It’s not like the Pirates have much arm depth to begin with.
