The Phillies have meetings scheduled with all four of the top free agent shortstops, reports Jayson Stark of the Athletic. They’ll sit down with the representatives for each of Carlos Correa, Trea Turner, Dansby Swanson and Xander Bogaerts before the Winter Meetings kick off in earnest next Monday.
Philadelphia is widely seen as likely to land one member of that group, with reports suggesting they’re particularly dialed in on Turner. They’ve also been previously linked to Bogaerts, and it’s easy enough to see why they’d cover all bases in meeting with Correa and Swanson as well. The Phils have a need for middle infield help to pair with youngster Bryson Stott, and adding one of the top shortstops available is the most straightforward way to achieving that.
The expectation is that Correa and Turner will command the two largest contracts, with Boagerts and Swanson coming in behind them. Correa is the youngest of the group at age 28, while Turner has the most consistent offensive track record over the past couple seasons and is arguably the game’s top baserunner. Bogaerts is a similar caliber of hitter to Correa and Turner but has faced some questions about his ability to stick at shortstop into his mid-30’s. Swanson’s coming off a Gold Glove-winning season that he paired with arguably the best offensive showing of his career, but his general track record at the plate is behind the other three.
All four players are commanding ample interest and could top $150MM on the open market. The Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Twins, Braves, Red Sox and Orioles are among the teams that have been tied to at least one of the shortstops available. Turner, who’s reportedly the Phillies’ primary target, has been linked to a pair of the NL’s other top teams.
Ken Rosenthal wrote last night that the Padres were among the clubs with interest in Turner, and Rosenthal and Dennis Lin at the Athletic report tonight that San Diego has already met with Turner and his representatives twice this offseason. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune also characterizes the club’s interest in Turner as legitimate. Acee suggests that San Diego actually signing one of the top shortstops remains a long shot, considering the Friars already have Fernando Tatis Jr., Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth as middle infield options. However, the Union-Tribune writes that San Diego could put Cronenworth on the trade market to alleviate the logjam if they surprisingly landed one of the top shortstops. The Friars have also been tied to Bogaerts at multiple points this offseason.
The Dodgers have been connected to both Turner and Bogaerts on various occasions. Juan Toribio of MLB.com wrote yesterday that L.A. and Turner have spoken in recent weeks. Toribio suggests the Dodgers could be reluctant to meet Turner’s asking price, but it seems likely the sides will remain in contact as the Winter Meetings approach.
Continuing with the theme, the Twins have a sit-down scheduled with Correa in the next few days, tweets Darren Wolfson of SKOR North. Minnesota has maintained their interest in retaining Correa throughout the offseason, and they’ve reportedly floated him a number of long-term deals.

I wonder if it will be a group interview.

Haha! Awkward!

6 way Zoom call with Jeffrey Toobin as the moderator sounds about right…

Could be a decent reality show. Agree to a contract with all 4 and whoever comes out at the end gets the contract of their dreams.

Comment of the year right here folks…
CaptainJudge99
Let’s stop pretending Turner’s not signing with the Phillies, especially if they’re offering him $30 million or more annually over 7 or 8 years. Philly wants him, and he wants them on the East Coast. Turner’s better then Correa anyway.
Gwynning
What else does your almanac say, Biff?
Deadguy
That the Houston sign stealing scandal was Biff Playing outcomes? Something about a group of cigar smoking men from space jam offering a 1 billion dollar contract with Nike Rob Manfred and MLB couldn’t have getting Pete Rosed into oblivion! And here’s Tom with the weather
CaptainJudge99
@Gwynning- and the almanac says “the Padres aren’t getting Trea Turner, and the Phillies will continue to be you’re daddy” so they’ll end up with him, dummy!

It’s never great to count your chickens before they’re hatched, but it does seem inevitable that the Phillies will get 1 of the big 4. I’d theoretically be happy with either of them for different reasons.
ham77
The only one I’d be disappointed in is Dansby because I don’t think he’ll ever repeat what he did last season offensively.
VonPurpleHayes
Agreed, but you’d save more money to spend on pitching. Ideally I’d like Turner or Bogaerts. Correa is great, but on a personal fan level, keep that 2017 taint away from the Phillies please.
Samuel
Von;
I keep writing this……
Because a team wants to win in 2023 they’re going to give out a huge 6-10 year contract to a guy?
So if they save some some money to buy pitching in 2023, what do they do all those other years?
Let me put this in perspective:
Think back to all the things that happened with your team and MLB – including juiced baseballs, shortened seasons, playoff changes and rule changes – since 2013-2017.
VonPurpleHayes
You’re right on, Samuel. The time is now.
Yankee Clipper
Von, you have to be stoked. Excellent performance last season? Far surpassing expectations and almost winning it all. Right into the offseason where ownership sees the WS is within reach and making big moves accordingly.
XB has the best overall offensive production of the group since 2018. But, imho, Turner is the most well-rounded and impacts the game the most. I get why they want him above the others. MLB Network had a Fangraphs guy on there and they had him at 9-year $288M.
VonPurpleHayes
Absolutely. It feels like they finally turned that huge corner. Very much reminds me of 2007-2008. Hopefully there’s some fun times ahead.
Yankee Clipper
I’m all in if it’s like 2008!
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Von, not a huge corner turned IMHO. Six of 15 NL teams will make the playoffs. Teams like the Rox, Reds, Pirates, Cubs, Nats and Marlins aren’t gonna sniff them this year. Thus we’re down to 6 of 9 making the postseason.
Could easily knock that down to 6 of 7 by eliminating the Giants and D-Backs.
With such a small field, it would be a major disappointment for the Phillies not to make the playoffs. Yeah, I know, you wanna win the whole enchilada, but as we saw last year when our 87-win Phillies made it all the way to Game 6 of the WS, a team that makes the dance and gets hot at the right time can go a long way. Maybe even as far to warrant a parade up Broad Street.
VonPurpleHayes
I disagree for a few reasons. The Phillies had a great winning % since June. This was not just a hotstreak, the team finally clicked.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Agree about the team clicking after Thomson took over. Played well, even without Harper and Segura for long stretches. But realistically, in a six-team playoff field that at least included the Dodgers, Mets, Padres and Braves how confident would you be with us coming out on top each year making it to the WS, let alone winning the WS?
Don’t get me wrong. I want them to be good again in 2023. Been following and rooting for the Phillies since Del Ennis and Richie Ashburn were roaming in their outfield. We have a good team, but those aforementioned contenders are pretty good, too. Might even add the Cardinals to the playoff mix as well. Whatever, still a tough row to hoe.
VonPurpleHayes
Oh yea. I agree about the playoffs, and the likelihood of getting back to the WS. I just think with one of these star SSs and a quality SP, the Phcaj really establish themselves as a top contender in the NL. And I have absolutely no doubt they get one of these four SSs.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Yep, I concur that one of the top FA shortstops will be in Philly this year. Hoping it’s Turner but will be just fine if it’s one of the other three. All four are quality players. As for getting a good SP, that’s gonna be tougher. Prices are going to be crazy as witnessed by the $37 million per year deGrom is gonna get from the Rangers over the next five years. Eflin getting $40 million isn’t chump change, either. But hey, it’s not my money so I hope Cigar Guy opens up the wallet again.
DakotaJoe
I prefer Turner who has a considerably highly career slugging to XB who has always played in right-handed hitting friendly Fenway Park. But believe me I would be happy with either one.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Von, all four are good. However, I favor Trea Turner.
JMHO, but after the Braves PR faux pas last year letting Freeman get away, I doubt very much that Swanson goes anywhere but back to Atlanta.
That Grissom kid looks good, but probably still needs 250-300 AAA at bats. Besides, the Braves can always play him in LF.
VonPurpleHayes
I agree with all of this. Turner’s my preference. I see Dansby staying in ATL.
Fooque2
Phillies- Trea or X
Rishi
Why on Earth would the Padres spend all that money on a middle infielder and trade Cronenworth when he is not that much worse than the other guys (obviously he’s not as good as Trea Turner). But I guess it would amount to paying for prospects/etc or flipping him for another need.
Gwynning
Cronie becomes the de facto firstbaseman (and a good one at that) under that scenario. Highly doubtful he’s traded this offseason, unless AJ gets his piece(s) in return.
Rishi
Gwynning
That was a helpful reply. I didn’t realize he had played first. I just got back into MLB the last year and a half and was only loosely following compared to my old days (pre-2018)
tstats
He’s he darn good defensive first basemen but I don’t think Crone will hit enough to justify being a firstbasemam.
Rishi
Idk he already does really. The whole idea that you have to be a great hitter to play first is wrong. It is a team by team thing. It depends. If the team already has great hitters throughout the lineup then you are fine with an average hitting 1b. Not calling him average tho either. If you are an average hitter and a good defender at first you have value. Plus first base is low key the most underrated defensive position IMO. I don’t think the stats do the players justice. They are involved in more plays then anyone and there are a lot of little things that can make a play harder than it should be for the other fielders or get you an out by stretching a wee bit further.
YourDreamGM
Not that much worse ( if that is true ) is still worse. They finished how many games behind LA? Are the Giants not going to contend? NY Phi Atl certainly are. They need to get any edge they can.
Rishi
Well in all fairness LA is probably not gonna win that many games again and the Padres are going to get back one of the best players in baseball. They are going to have soto for an entire year. They can improve elsewhere. Moving pieces is inherently dangerous. Cronenworth already does well with them and how many times do you see a guy sign a big deal and his production with new team goes down (at least the first year).
YourDreamGM
So because LA probably isn’t going to win that many games again SD shouldn’t try to improve. I disagree. I would take any opportunity to improve. Not endorsing a Crone trade but of a situation emerges to improve I would be all for it.
Rishi
Putting words in my mouth. I said they should try to improve elsewhere. They already are solid up the middle. But as the commenter above said he could play first but idk if he would mind or not.
YourDreamGM
So improve as long as it doesn’t mean trading Crone. Got it right?
Rishi
I’m saying why spend your money on something you are already good at when there are other areas you could spend it on. But as I said if he can play a good first base and isn’t gonna throw a fit about the change then it’s all good.
YourDreamGM
I’m saying improving is improving and make any move that doesn’t hurt ticket sales.
I am impressed you are thinking about saving your team money. Most fans are like yes we got the superstar and who cares if it’s a awful contract.
myaccount2
I mean, yeah, it’s logical to want to improve as long as it doesn’t include moving on from Cronenworth. Why would they trade an all-star who hasn’t even hit arbitration yet? I don’t think the dude will even be making $1M next season. For a team who has so much payroll tied up in Soto, Tatis, Machado, Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Suarez, Martinez, Hader, and on and on, money needs to be saved somewhere. He’d probably get $15M a season on the open market. He should be a building block, not a trade piece.
Brew’88
@myaccount. The answer: consider the source of this rumor
Aaron Sapoznik
Anthony trying to piss his boss off with no mention of the Cubs? Coal in your socks for Christmas, pal.

That’s because no one is paying him to do so…
Aaron Sapoznik
Btw: Tim, Steve and even Anthony had the Cubs signing Dansby Swanson. Only Darragh had the Cubs missing out on one of the elite shortstops.
I’m more optimistic with the Cubs signing Carlos Correa. I got Trea Turner reuniting with Bryce Harper in Philadelphia, Xander Bogaerts reuniting with Mookie Betts in LA and Swanson remaining in Atlanta.
BeansforJesus
Dansby Swanson is J.J. Hardy. Buyer beware.
NashvilleJeff
That’s an interesting evaluation on Swanson, Beans. I said the same thing 4 years ago to some Braves fans on the old MLB team chat. They pretty much scorched me for comparing him to Hardy, lol.

Ahmed Rosario is very much in play as a trade candidate for Rhys Hoskins
VonPurpleHayes
Nah. They’re signing one of the big 4. I guarantee it l.
Sunday Lasagna
Trea Turner will be a Phillie
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Von, speaking of Hoskins, what are you hearing about him? Wouldn’t be disappointed if the Phillies traded him for a solid #3 SP, moved Bohm to 1B, signed Turner to play SS and re-signed Segura to play 3B.
Compared to what we’ve witnessed the past few years from our infield defense, what I’ve proposed above would really give our defense a boost.
VonPurpleHayes
I think they’re keeping him for the time being. One, Bohm is terrible at 1B, almost as bad as Hoskins. Hoskins is well liked within the clubhouse. Despite Hoskins being an absolute butcher in the field, his offensive production is really hard to replicate. The clubhouse chemistry was important. I think they keep Hoskins for the 2023 run. He can possinly be a deadline chip.
Phillls
Did you not see Bohm play first for a few games 2 years ago? As bad if not worse defensively than Hoskins, and not going to have the same 30 HR 80 RBI production….
fred-3
Trea should be a good pickup, just as long as you don’t expect him to do anything in the playoffs

I don’t trust AJ Preller’s judgment.
He often makes deals as if somebody has compromising video of him and a farm animal.

The new Yankees.
When one long-term contract goes sour it’s a hiccup for the team.
When a 2nd one goes bad then the organization has to do a bunch of things it doesn’t want to in order to try to get out of the hole.

Lol. Not a chance.

Might be a plausible Plan D if Plan A (Turner), Plan B (Bogey) or Plan C (Correa) don’t pan out.
Would need someone other than Karinchak as the third piece in that trade.
We already have a reliever (Alvarado) who can walk the ballpark. Sure as hell don’t need two of that ilk.

Lessie. I’ve lost track, is this the 8th or 9th article posted by mlbtr about the Padres being on the absurd verge of signing a top FA SS despite no credible/probable source? Credit to this article though, including a flip out deal involving Cronz,…wildly imaginative. Preller lives in many heads.
