Giants Reportedly Postpone Carlos Correa’s Introduction Due To Medical Concern

By Darragh McDonald | December 20, 2022 at 11:59pm CDT

The Giants and Carlos Correa agreed to terms last week on a 13-year, $350MM framework for a deal. That structure was pending a physical and Correa had yet to officially sign the contract. The club was going to introduce him today but the scheduled news conference was postponed due to a medical concern, reports Ronald Blum of the Associated Press. Earlier today, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the postponement was related to the fact that the club was “awaiting test results.” At this point, it isn’t known what exactly is causing the holdup, with Blum’s report simply stating that “a medical issue was flagged.”

Beyond that information, anything else is speculation at this point. It isn’t publicly known what the issue is or how serious it is. It’s also not known if the Giants simply want to conduct further tests or have firm evidence of something that will lead to the deal being called off or restructured. However, the fact that they are at least delaying the official stamp is a situation that will be worth monitoring.

Over the past eight seasons, Correa has been one of the best shortstops in baseball but one knock against him has been durability. He has gone to the injured list with various issues in his career, including a torn ligament in his thumb, lower back soreness and a fractured rib. However, he largely moved past his “injury-prone” label in recent years. He played 58 games in the shortened 60-game season in 2020, followed by 148 contests in 2021. This most recent season, he went on the IL for a finger contusion and went to the COVID-IL once but still got into 136 games on the year, staying healthy for the entirety of the second half of the season. Again, it’s worth repeating that we don’t know what the current issue is or the severity of it, but Slusser reports that is not a back problem.

How prophetic. Getting out of this contract is the best news imaginable for the Giants organization. This was the most foolish contract in mlb history. Your fans will be hurting for a few days, until they come to the realization that this turn of events will actually save the Giants about 7-9 years of misery. Congrats on making the tough decision to burn that contract. You have an excellent pitching rotation, with great depth, a fine bullpen, and plenty of quality position players. Grab one or two more mid-tier guys with some pop, and you’ll be fine.

He has been making sure there is a quality product on the field for the Braves for many years to come. Swanson isn’t worth the money to the Braves And AA has been setting this team up for years to come and not for the next 2-3 seasons like the Mets.

I wouldn’t make fun of a health situation until something is announced. You never know what it could be.

Just so you all can see where I’m coming from, while something like this can simply be a minor injury or a PED issue, there are other serious issues can happen….especially with the care they’re taking with Correa’s privacy. For example, a lot of us that are older, we remember when Tommy Morrison was supposed to have a fight setting up a matchup with Mike Tyson, however, that fight was cancelled the night of the fight due to “a medical concern” that needed to be confirmed, so everyone was “awaiting test results.”

Let’s see what this is first before any comments are made.

      I hope it’s nothing severe.

@MarlinsFan you forgot to mention Morrison was found to be HIV positive for those who don’t know. On a side note Rocky 5 was trash which Morrison was in.

Yeah, I figured for those that didn’t know, they could search it to get the point about them just cracking on Correa before any of us know what happened here…the same way nobody knew what happened to Morrison until it was announced after he got the confirmation blood results of his positive test.

This situation with the safeguarded approach to Correa’s privacy is pretty similar to the day that Morrison’s fight was cancelled. I hope Correa is ok.

Yeah, I’m hoping he’s ok. I think a lot of us that are older probably thought of the Morrison situation because that’s the only thing that was high profile like this where a cancellation happened with vague comment that feels ominous.

A lot of the commenters cracking on Correa don’t seem to understand how odd and rare something like this occurrence is…and how it always leads to a sad result in some capacity.

Rather than jump to Morrison-type issues, just look at the contract JD Martinez signed with Boston.

At the medical review side of things, Boston balked, the deal was put on hold, and they renegotiated some team opt outs if the lis franc became an issue again.

Same team, Boston took issue with Mike Napoli and his hip. There was an agreement in principle for multiple years, looked at medicals and had concerns. Deal was held up and turned into a one year guaranteed deal instead with other provisions. Then they went on and had him multiple years and escalators gave him his original value.

It’s not unprecedented, it’s just this is a much longer term, many more years in length mega deal.

Different teams look at things differently as well. Think back to the Brady Aiken situation and Houston.

Recall he also didn’t want teams to see his medicals unless they had an offer on the table, which makes this even more interesting.

Could be nothing, could be something. We shall see. SF fans are going to be pissed if he has a prohibitive medical issue though.

Not saying most unvaccinated people will have a heart attack but it just ain’t worth it. If you got vaccinated for polio and measles then no point in Covid resistance.

They could be waiting for test results that clear him to be Covid free so he can take the physical. Just a thought and could be completely off lol.

A positive COVID test wouldn’t garner this kind of delay with this level of ominously vague phrasing…. this kind of thing is typically a preamble to a deal falling apart over a viable physical issue or drug test result, etc. that causes a team to rescind an offer or severely downgrade the offer.

Exactly. A Covid test would not raise a concern on a contract. Off the top of my head, if it isn’t physical damage, it seems like a blood test would cause this sort of pull-back out of nowhere…and the surrounding vagueness in the reporting until a result comes back. As far as I can think of, the only blood results that could trigger a question about the contract would be a drug failure, testing positive for a PED, having cancerous cells appear or testing positive for HIV.

I’m hoping it’s not one of the worse scenarios. If anything, a human being would hope, that if this is related to a blood test, that it’s a failed PED test because no one wishes addiction, cancer or HIV on anyone..

Do some research if you think these two are even close. One guy left our organization and his understudy hacked his emails or account. One front office person was implicated.

Slight bit different than a game time, team-coordinated (coaches and players) cheating scheme where several were directly implicated.

And dude, you called it a dynasty not me. You had a hell of a lot of second place finishes in there. Kinda like, oh yeah, the Cardinals 11-15, but you don’t hear us droning on like we were a “dynasty”.

I mean, the Braves were referred to as a Dynasty when they won 13 straight division titles, but only 1 World Series. So there is an argument to be made; ultimately, it’s a pretty sounding word, but entirely subjective.

Fair point, and I’d probably push back on them if they were legit caught cheating, as a team, in the playoffs.

That no players were punished is beyond me. And had we signed Correas cheating a**, I would’ve become a Cubs fan. It’s THAT bad!

Hahaha, yeah the last fifteen years have been AWFUL as a Cards fan. I mean, I think we missed the playoffs twice, maybe even THREE times in that period. Last year we had to send off two future Hall of Famers and have to cheer for at least three potential others this year in Waino, Goldy and Arenado.

          Absolutely awful I tell ya.

Well, we actually won in 06 and 11. You guys stole a trophy and won one. Calm down, sweetheart.

(Don’t be sad, I don’t blame you personally for your team compromising the integrity of the WS trophy. If it makes you feel better to say you have two rings [you even know you really don’t] that’s cool. That’s “almost” the same thing as 11 rings…)

Yeah right. You’re hilarious. If the Cards got caught doing the same thing (which they’ve done some bad things themselves) you’d go hide in a corner or you’d be on here saying “BuT EvErYoNe eLsE dOeS It!!!” It’s always funny until it’s your team, and a lot of you on here act like us as fans should garner some of the blame lol. And before you try to tell me how I should stop rooting for my hometown team over it, you know dang well you wouldn’t stop supporting yours.

Your team cheated so bad a guy went to prison. Glass houses and all that. Nobody that roots for the friggin cardinals can say anything about cheating by another organization without sounding like a complete hypocrite. Your guy went to prison. Im not certain but I’m pretty sure no other MLB team, ever, can claim that level
          of cheating.

The commissioner did his best to sweep it under the rug just like he has done with every other cheating scandal he’s come across under his tenure. What makes the Astros stand out is the disgruntled former player giving an on the record interview about it. That is the primary reason the Astros scandal became the public sh@t storm it turned into. Without Mike Fiers the trash can thing would have been as quietly handled as the Cardinals, Yankees and Red Sox cheating.

As a Giants fan, our team needs to start spending money and eating contracts if that’s what it takes because without a couple of names on our roster no free agents will want to come. Only willing to spend half as much and the Dodgers or Padres, expect to win only half as many games.

Ong please let this be a dumpster fire put out by a technicality.

I hope the deal gets voided or the league forces them to restructure it and the value is downgraded.

There’s always been something sketchy and shameless about Correa and I hope the Giants’ due diligence discovered it and it’s invalidating the deal.

Either the entire deal is getting voided or the league is forcing the Giants to restructure so that the AAV become unpalatable and they rescind the offer or whatever-

Either way this is a bad sign and I hope Correa has to eat crow and take a substantially less lucrative deal or shorter deal etc and winds up making way less money.

Or he’s been caught on banned substances and is about to get suspended before the deal even begins… which would be hilarious and could cause the Giants to void the deal and leave Correa a free agent with diminished prospects as he has to wait out half the 2023 season to even get signed… to some discounted pro rated one year deal…

He is not officially legally signed yet. He has to literally sign and they have to process paper work to make him a contracted employee of the Giants, earning a salary of $27M a year or whatever- all contingent on this medical assessment holding it up.

      Correa is still technically unsigned.

They may have. dodged one. They also can still go through with it with changes to the contract. Depends on what it is and how severe SF thinks it is.

If he misses a certain amount of time because of this specific injury then he makes less or it triggers a team option or something like that. Of course Correa and his people would need to agree. and may ask for something in return.

It’s not totally uncommon but it would be for a contract like this. If I remember correctly Red Sox did something similar with JD when they were worried about his foot. They protected themselves against a foot injury and I believe in return he wanted an opt out.

Typically contracts are contingent on a clean bill of health so I believe the Giants would have the ability to cancel the contract if it’s something that serious.

Deal is not signed. Deal is tentatively agreed upon, but the contract is signed upon completion of medical evaluations- the very thing holding it up. Giants can still rescind the offer and Correa is still a free agent.

I assume you are trolling. Every single media outlet has stated it has not been signed, merely agreed upon.

Even Judge didn’t sign his deal until today or yesterday and had taken two weeks off to go on a family vacation before officially signing the deal.

There’s a difference between an agreement and a signed contract. It’s the difference between a handshake deal and a contract, basically.

As Carlos will sign with the Mets tell you that you had no clue about how the signing process is done.

The physical is done after the agreement is set in place and if the player fails a physical the contract will be voided because of the failure to pass the physical.

Now had he gotten injured the moment after he passed the physical and the contract was official then the Giants would have been on the hook unless Carlos did something to void the contract.

So Carlos will be the Mets new third baseman and will not be playing for the Giants…

I highly doubt they’d be doing what would have been the official blood tests so close to the holiday that it’d be delayed right when they were planning to announce the deal- which usually happens once the player has signed or as the player signs the contract.

This feels a lot more like something actually came up that is of legitimate concern and that maybe if there are more tests to be done, they’re re-doing the same tastes or doing additional tests to clarify or confirm an issue that came up already from initial test results.

I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a player’s career to implode and their earning potential to evaporate as much as I do Correa’s. This mystery issue holding up the deal is teasing some potentially amazing poetic justice for baseball for an over hyped cheater who thinks they should be one of the highest paid players in history when they could be going into year two of a very cushy and very guaranteed $160M deal and in fact may wind up leaving $124.9M on the table and never get that mega deal in any capacity, out of a level of hubris that is wholly undeserved and very few people even objectively agree is worth the self hype of the player.

I don’t mind ‘bad guys’ in baseball, I don’t mind seeing players I’m not a huge fan of thrive on teams I am not a fan of, who threaten my preferred teams’ chances of succeeding.

I do think someone like Correa thought he could hold the entirety of baseball hostage to get every dollar out of the game he possibly could, well above and beyond his value in terms of AAV and in terms of total years and if he fails to do so, it’ll feel like beautiful baseball poetic justice.

I hope this issue doesn’t just delay the deal, but obliterates it and Correa becomes the most notorious ‘what if’ ever of a guy that winds up making a fraction of what he and pundits thought he’d make in his career.

No deal was reached in terms of being signed so until they figure things out with the physical issue, the Giants owe nothing. They can walk away from the contract if they want since no one has signed the paperwork.

Pen has not yet been put to paper. The deal was tentatively agreed upon. Most baseball contracts are agreed upon in principle- the total years, the total dollars, possibly even the structure (so dollars paid per year, bonuses, buy outs, etc.) and then all of that is put into a contract that also includes language about personal conduct, physical and medical considerations that can void the deal or upon which the deal is contingent and then the player has medical exams and medical tests that confirm they are in the condition the team assumed they were in when the basic outline of the deal was agreed upon- at that point the contract language is finalized and vetted by the team’s business side- their chief legal counsel, team doctors, trainers, the GM, the ownership, etc.- and then that contract is presented to the player and their agent and the player then physically signs the contract with pen on paper or whatever and then the contract gets filed and the player signs additional paperwork to be put on the payroll and start to receive their salary beginning at a certain date and is added to the 40 man roster.

The only thing that has actually happened with this deal so far is that Correa and the Giants agreed on the length and the value of the deal, possibly other details like perks etc. and that was all being put into contractual language, with the medical exams and the blood tests etc. being the final piece that if Correa’s results were acceptable or within the expectations of the Giants, they’d have finalized the contract language, presented Correa and his agents with the contract and Correa would have signed that and then signed further paperwork to become an employee of the Giants as a player and be placed on their 40 man roster.

Something came up with his medical exam and tests to prevent them from finalizing the contractual language and thus nothing has actually been signed- Correa is not yet an employee of the Giants, no money has been legally guaranteed to him, he is not on their roster- and whatever this issue is may cause the Giants to void the tentative agreement they had in place and then poof, it’s like the 13 year $350M deal never existed and Correa remains a free agent- something he still currently is as of this article being posted.

But until the final results of the physical are conclusive, both team and player are currently obligated to the agreement. If Correa was to suddenly announce an agreement with another team, he could be sued, as could the team, if they walk away for an unsubstantiated reason.

Do you think the giants looked at his injury history and thought, maybe 13 years with a no trade clause isn’t the wisest use of superstar dollars?! They need to take off the blinders they had on for Aaron Judge and realize the reason Correa wasn’t signed to a ultra long term deal last season was his inability to stay healthy long term. 350 million is an albatross contract that could cause competitive problems if they are not getting superstar level production for every year of that deal.

I don’t think anybody wants to see him actually suffer or be in real danger- I certainly don’t- but as far as the integrity of the game and as far as players getting paid what they’re actually worth, Correa’s entire journey through free agency ever since he turned down the Astros’ 5 year/$160M extension offer has been an embarrassment and the fact that it’s been like pulling teeth for him to find a mega deal when so many other players seem to find their mega deals very quickly and without much of any drama while Correa’s market is a veritable soap opera is an annoying distraction within the game- and I feel like most fans just want it to go away. Meaning him.

So if he’s been caught cheating or he’s got a degenerative physical issue that isn’t life threatening, the irony of that vs how he’s marketed himself especially given his relative youth would be kind of delicious irony.

But yeah if it’s a serious medical issue I sincerely hope he can beat it and come back 100% and earn a deal and be healthy through that deal’s tenure and live a full healthy life.

Not a Stros fan, but let’s be real. Correa got $35M for last year plus the $350M over 13 with the Giants, he essentially banked $385 over 14, so it seems he played it pretty pretty good. Now, all this goes out the window if they found something with his back, which was a concern for teams.

Agreed. I am an Astros fan, and I wish him well, but his “my time” act at the end of his Astros tenure was annoying. The scandal aside, he’s not the most likeable guy in the game, but he appears to have played his free agency very well. Acting as if he didn’t sign sooner because he wasn’t wanted is ridiculous. He didn’t sign sooner because he didn’t settle.

I’m in agreement with you. This article and the reports sound eerie. The only time I can remember anything similar was when Tommy Morrison had a fight cancelled on fight night as he was part of the feature duo fight night that was setting him up for a big payday against Mike Tyson. All of us older fans remember how that turned out once the results everyone was waiting for came back (which was a second test to confirm what was found in the first test).

I’m hoping this is nothing serious with Correa.

As a longtime Astros fan, I’d bet it’s his back. He’s always had to do extra work and rest to keep it from locking up. I’d guess he has a degenerative disc or two in his lower back. Remember the time his ribs were broken from a “massage” as well. He’s gimpy and the Astros knew it and no interest in going past a 5 years on a contract with him.

You would think that the physical would come before the negotiations. Someone will have to evaluate how many functional years he has left, based on the current rate of degeneration, even if that’s not the issue related to finalizing the contract, but it most likely will be a future issue, baseball or not.

Maybe the Giants realized that since the SF area has people and businesses leaving in droves, it would be a short time before CCs contract was impossible to pay.

Lrtexasman – I’m thinking you’re probably right. Short term contracts, I’d guess they’re thinking it’s manageable. 13 years is a long time and degenerative back issues will make themselves known sooner or later.

I suspect that an MRI revealed a degenerative back (disc) issue, given his medical history. Whether or not that’s the case, we’re going to see a lot more of that sort of injury with the demise of the contact hitter. Even if that’s not the current issue for Correa, it most likely would be in 13 yrs. Look at the swing videos of the vast majority of hitters; the human back can tolerate only so much torque and twisting.

Nobody has ever complained about him in the locker room. Take your Astros hater glasses off. Correa’s former teammates routinely rave about him. You can call him a cheater, but not sure where the “liar” part is coming from. He’s never shied away from the scandal. All he’s done is call out the dumbasses that run their mouths without knowing the facts. One of whom has now been confirmed to be a cheater himself and another who hasn’t hit his weight since MLB came down on sign stealing.

It’s ridiculous and premature for anyone to be drawing conclusions from this. Perhaps Correa’s fine. Everyone should just wait for further and more-definitive information to be released. MSN is actually using a sensationalistic headline that reads “MLB world reacts to horrible Carlos Correa news”. Horrible news? More like horrible news reporting. The MSN story, which contains no more specifics than any other story about this, even goes on to say “…Correa … will have to go back to the drawing board either with the Giants or another potential suitor in free agency.” Not necessarily. Ideally, it’s much ado about nothing.

We now have as definitive of information as we can have. 3 Bay Area beat writers for the Giants have now said that their sources say that the Giants excuse was an injury
      Correa suffered in 2014.

The Twins, who have all the same medical reports, signed him to a 3 year deal, and offered 10/285 after the Giants backed out had no problem with that injury.

      Obviously the Mets didn’t either.

Mets now have an unbelievable starting line up.. No need to look for a RH DH. Plenty of options now:

Would like to see the C improved, but so long as the backstop plays solid defense the bat won’t matter much.

It just keeps getting worse for the Giants.
