Mariners Sign Casey Sadler To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | December 7, 2022 at 11:45am CDT

The Mariners have brought right-hander Casey Sadler back to the organization on a minor league deal, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

Sadler, 32, enjoyed a tremendous breakout campaign in 2021. Going into that season, he had a 3.90 ERA over 85 1/3 innings pitched in his career. But 2021 saw him post a miniscule 0.67 ERA over 40 1/3 innings with Seattle. That came with peripherals to back it up, as he struck out 25.5% of batters faced while walking just 6.9%, and getting grounders on 62.9% of balls in play. He moved up the club’s bullpen chart and was able to secure 15 holds by the end of the campaign.

He reached arbitration for the first time after that season and got a raise to $1.025MM, ready to play a key role in the club’s bullpen yet again in 2022. Unfortunately, he required shoulder surgery in March and missed the entire season. Since the arbitration system generally prevents salaries from going down, he was projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz for an arbitration salary of $1.025MM again in 2023. However, the club outrighted him in November.

Sadler now rejoins the Mariners but he’ll have to earn his spot back on the roster. Given his year off, it’s known what kind of production he’ll be capable of 2023. However, if he can get anywhere near the form he showed last year, this will be a nice addition to a Seattle bullpen that has already been a strength in recent seasons.

Here’s a guy that’s given up 6 runs in his entire career vs the AL west.

I am aware of the difference, hence the reference to one of my favorite Statler Brothers songs, Do You Remember These?…..

Thank God! I was hoping we’d do this. That BP took a pretty big hit by sending E Swanson away.

I’m seeing a few writers suggesting a trade package of Matt Brash, Kelenic, Harry Ford and E Hancock for B Reynolds. If SEA does trade Brash in any kind of package (I honestly hope they don’t) they will need Casey Sadler to find that 2021 form.

My gut feeling is PIT will not trade BR. If they do- My first impression is that is a helluva lot to give up for BR. However I know you have to give up a lot to get a proven player with 3 yrs control. I don’t see this happening but an OF of Julio, B Reynolds and Teoscar Hernandez has to be the top OF in the AL!

I cant help think that PIT could get double or even triple the total value of WAR from that package of SEA players. Then again….you never know with prospects!

I think that is a lot to give up as well. Where are you hearing that?

A Pittsburg radio guy tweeted it the other day, I didn’t see anything else to substantiate that.

That still wouldn’t be enough for Reynolds according to MLB Trade Values. I’d hold out for more if I was Pit. Just being realistic. Gilbert alone would be almost an even swap. Pit might have to kick in a mid tier prospect.

Example 1 million of the randomness of relivers. Sadler was amazing in 2021. There will be a dozen random NRI guys who pitch better than the big name relievers this year like every year. When you are talking 50-70 innings, who knows?

I always liked Sadler when he was on the Pirates and has bounced between mediocre and very good years ever since. He does not throw hard but gets the job done.
The Pirates do not have room on the ML roster but I would have given him a split contract as he will be needed in Pittsburgh sometime this year.

He is really cheap. Probably better than Jansen over fewer innings

    If he’s healthy that’s a big signing
Last time he was pitching and healthy for the Mariners he was nasty
