Marlins Acquire Jake Mangum From Mets

By Anthony Franco | December 7, 2022 at 9:22pm CDT

The Marlins have acquired minor league outfielder Jake Mangum from the Mets, tweets Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. He’s the player to be named later in the deal that sent Elieser Hernández and Jeff Brigham to Queens last month.

A college star at Mississippi State, Mangum hit .357/.420/.457 over four seasons in Starkville. A fourth-round senior sign in the 2019 draft, the switch-hitter has played three seasons in the New York farm system. He owns a .284/.346/.414 line in just under 900 professional plate appearances, including a .333/.365/.471 showing in 33 games for Triple-A Syracuse this year.

Mangum, 26, doesn’t bring much power to the table. Yet he puts the ball in play frequently and is capable of playing center field, giving him a chance to carve out a role as a fourth or fifth outfielder. Baseball America slotted him as the #28 prospect in the New York system entering the 2022 campaign.

Despite his decent minor league numbers, the Mets decided not to add Mangum to the 40-man roster to keep him from selection in the Rule 5 draft. He went unselected in that process this afternoon, and the Marlins acquired him within hours of ensuring they wouldn’t lose him in the Rule 5. He won’t require a 40-man roster spot in Miami, meaning he’ll provide the Fish some upper level non-roster depth.

It was probably contingent on him not being selected in the draft which is why it’s announced now. If another team drafted him then there was most likely a backup player that the Marlins had requested.

Buuuuut, is 26 and has not played a single game at the MLB level. The only way I’d complain about trading a guy like this away is if he was blocked by an OF composed of Trout, Harper and Judge…with Acuna as the 4th OF and Shohei as the DH. Since that is not the case with the Mets, the guy is nothing to cry about.

Now he can always make me happily wrong if he turns out to be a diamond in the rough stud. I won’t hold my breath about that.

You should be happy your team got this guy. Your comment isn’t particularly useful when you don’t know a thing about his skillset. Your comment is filled with generalized blah, blah, blah which tells me you know nothing about the player and how he plays the game.

Hey, I’d definitely would be happy if I’m wrong, but I will not hold my breath with a guy that the Mets didn’t feel was good enough to make his MLB debut yet at age age 26…not even a cup of tea yet.

Most guys that fall into the borderline Rule 5 , not making his debut after so much time in MiLB, usually don’t do much or anything at the MLB level.

Unless you are saying that your Mets didn’t know what they were doing in not bringing this guy up yet….and keeping him?

I hope you’re right and I’m wrong. Again, not holding my breath.

@MarlinsFanBase: I don’t think you should dismiss him so quickly based on his age. He played college ball until he was 23, then had the year off in 2020 for COVID like the rest of the minor leagues. Look at his progression instead: first year in the minors was low A ball, second year was high A to AA, third year (last year) was AA to AAA. If he continues like this (and he hit well at AAA), you will see him in the majors this year. I think it’s a solid get for the Marlins considering what they gave up.

Good point about the Covid situation because that did change a lot of the normal equations. I hope this is one of them.

But again, I won’t expect much, and he’ll be an afterthought until he draws my attention again.

For what it’s worth, if this guy does help us next season, it could possibly save Kim Ng her job if she pulls off a find like that…that is if Elieser doesn’t find himself with the Mets and ends up becoming a sold #5 or 4 or even 3 for you all.

Calm down. PCA and ManGum are not similar. Defense first guy that at best will be a slap hitter at the MLB level but more likely a AAAA type guy.

Check the pipeline and search Alex Ramirez. I assure the CF of the future is still safe and sound in the organization. Couple year away. Benintendi for two years or put McNeil in left and Marte in center with Baty at third and Escobar at second for the year will suffice. Nimmo is a fan favorite and a great guy. He is not going to be the piece that turns a horse race into a slam dunk.

The marlins are having an interesting change of strategy. The last years they focused on acquiring explosive athletes with star upside but often very bad k/bb rates.

It worked in some cases (jazz) but in most cases it did not work so ang changed the strategy acquiring some lower powered, higher contact and plate discipline guys maybe trying to mimick the guardians approach.

We will see how that works. It could lead to a toothless offense which hits a tons of soft outs but maybe it also is like with the guardians where they score just enough behind good pitching with contact, small ball and an occasional homer.

That won’t make the offense great immediately but you have to try something

Not a bad return for Marlins. Def potential be be a major league contributor this season. For Mets he was expendable, as evidenced by not being added to the 40-man roster prior to the Rule 5 draft.

For being a PTBNL, is a solid pick up. But, Mangum looks every bit as Brian Miller.
I mean, that’s fine but this team needs way more than that.

I will not complain about the Rule 5 pick up, but again, we need bats. I really don’t understand what is going on with the roster construction approach.

They SAID that, but they aren’t doing it. Mangum has 33 games in AAA and surely will not help the ML team now… maybe in July if we’re lucky.

There were at least 5 unclaimed players via Rule 5 who could have helped that line up now, but yet again, they picked an (interesting) arm.

None of the four players that went in either direction are noteworthy. Makes me wonder why I’m even commenting.

damn it!!! was REALLY hoping he’d be the outfield replacement! theres a lot of things about this guy that is gonna make him a heck of a ball player, if given the chance. just another minor player who was progressing and we lose! bad enough we gave up on PCA to the Cubs for rental player Baez. this sucks!

Mangum may not be a blue-chip prospect, but I am really surprised that the Mets made him available (via PTBNL) as an add-on for two players who were already DFA’d. If he manages a .315 OBP and plays passable CF, he would have quite some value.
