Orioles Sign Josh Lester To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | December 7, 2022 at 1:35am CDT

The Orioles have signed third baseman Josh Lester to a minor league deal, according to his MLB transactions page. Lester elected free agency last month after being outrighted off the Tigers’ roster.

Lester, 28, was a September callup for the Tigers this year, getting a brief taste of the big leagues for the first time before being optioned four days later. He appeared in two games, striking out three times in his five plate appearances and failing to record a hit. He showed a fair bit of power at Triple-A, mashing 29 home runs in 621 plate appearances on the way to a .246/.311/.479 line.

Originally drafted in the 13th round of the 2015 draft, Lester spent parts of seven seasons in the minors for Detroit before finally getting his first big league action this year. He’s mostly split time between third base and first base, logging 288 games at the hot corner and 311 appearances at first.

He’ll provide a bit of corner infield depth in the upper minors for the Orioles. Although these sorts of deals often come with invites to spring training, it hasn’t been reported that Lester has received one in this case.

Same amount of Home Runs as 2022 Aaron Judge in two minor league seasons. The Padres reportedly offered him 5 years 200m with full no trade clause

Alright Simon. We need something more entertaining than this. You got a opinion piece ready? If nothing else it’s been a few days since your co workers told us the teams that are interested in Bryan Reynolds.

Well depending where Lester is playing. I wonder if there could be a Wastburg trade coming where he is in it. They kinda have a log jam of third baseman.

He’s more of a 1B/DH, who can also play 3B.

Loved watching him as a minor leaguer but honestly, Lester is at best a 4A player. While I understand his desire to keep playing, at 28 he might want to think about starting the next phase of his life.

Disgusting people like TigerDoc act like playing minor-league ball….is not a great, well paying job.

Even playing in the minors, pays very, very well compared to the rest of these carpy jobs we work in the real world……

It is a great, well paying job.
    Even in the minors.

Well, after Elias’ comments “clarifying” what he said about escalating payroll, it appears these moves are the ones left. Maybe a trade, but nothing else. I guess we should have known that comment was him covering for trading Mancini and Lopez for players who won’t contribute for 3-4 years, but it was nice to believe a GM. Maybe once ownership changes hands.

Can the front office at least extend Adley or Gunnar?
