Giants, Ronald Guzman Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | January 19, 2023 at 1:48pm CDT

The Giants have agreed to a minor league contract with free-agent first baseman Ronald Guzman, as first indicated on the transaction log at MiLB.com.

Guzman, 28, was considered one of the top prospects in the Rangers organization before making his Major League debut in 2018, but he’s yet to produce much in the Majors, slashing .225/.302/.411 with a 29.2% strikeout rate against an 8.8% walk rate in 832 trips to the plate. He spent the 2022 season with the Yankees organization, mostly playing with their Triple-A affiliate, where he slashed .255/.344/.478 (116 wRC+) in 105 games and 373 plate appearances. Guzman did receive a brief look late in the 2022 campaign as the Yanks dealt with injuries, but he logged just six trips to the plate in three games and went hitless along the way.

The depth chart in San Francisco has several players ahead of Guzman at first base, including LaMonte Wade Jr. and J.D. Davis, who could share time at the position in platoon fashion early in the 2023 season. Veteran utilityman Wilmer Flores is no stranger to the position either, having logged 1627 innings at first base, including 482 frames across the past two seasons. They’ll likely be the primary options at the position. Austin Slater could be more of an emergency option as well, given his 203 career innings at first, but he’s played exclusively in the outfield dating back to the 2020 campaign.

The Giants were lacking in first base depth in the upper minors, however, and Guzman will give them an experienced player with a track record of solid production in Triple-A. He’s spent parts of five seasons at the minor leagues’ top level, tallying 1150 total plate appearances and posting a solid .280/.360/.449 batting line with a 21.1% strikeout rate, an even 10% walk rate, 34 home runs, 61 doubles and four triples along the way.

Potential, potential, potential. 6’5 235 lbs, what’s not to like?
With the right coaching, he may just hit again.

I’m amused that in the process of trying to impersonate my account you managed to distance yourself from me on the other chat by accusing me of being an impersonator. That completely undermines your sole purpose for being on this site. How foolish! “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.” – Napoleon Bonparte

Here is a funny wins above replacement score for Napoleon. He was worth a higher WAR than Trout in battle. Napoleon > Trout
He was supposedly poisoned by the British, but he never died in war over WAR.

Wow, another Boras client. After the Barry Zito contract, Brian Sabean never signed another Boras client. Now, even after the Correa fiasco, this is the second Boras client the Giants have signed (Conforto), so clearly Zaidi and Boras remain on good terms.

The Giants need AAA depth at first base big time, so looks like a good signing.

Decent walk rate but high k rate. Maybe can improve in Sacramento. Worth a shot.

I think that J.D. David and Wilmer Flores can handle first base with Davis getting most time at first. Also think David Viller and Flores handling third base with Viller handling most the time at third.

Breck, I’ll add that Davis will be full time DH versus lefties. I also expect that Wade/Flores only will play first–not Davis–and Villar and Davis will only be at 3rd. I know that limits Flores i think Flores starts often vs righties. In any event, 2 of the 4 will always be available off the bench–good to have. Anyway Breck, we’ll see how it plays out.

Sacramento has a way of making fringe MLB players look like All Stars.
Chris Shaw, another big lefty and former 1st round pick is the most recent example.
FUN FACT: Guzman is exactly 1 year younger than Shaw.

Guzman has massive splits, he simply can’t hit lefties worth a lick. Vs. RHP, not so bad. Guzman will be given a chance to fill Brandon Belt’s role, 1B/DH vs. RHP, then quickly replaced Vs. a lefty. Guzman is certainly worth the gamble for the price.

Oh goody, a first baseman that can’t hit. We had one who was terrific on defense and now he’s a Bluejay. I see no mention of his defensive ability. I wonder why…

Nice use of the comma between ‘contract‘ and ‘toejam’. Good punctuation always delivers a more devastating blow.

Dude, they were one season away from 100+ wins and one hit away from advancing just a season ago. Teams are not going to win something every season unless you foolishly throw money away like the Dodger and Yankees. This is what got the Gianst in trouble for a few years there, hanging onto past their prime players and signing them to albatross contracts…Other than a short season WS, the Dodgers had not won since 1988. Relax over there…It’s just a depth move…How many times has SF picked up players that surprised everyone, Lamont, Yaz, Gausman, Junis, Pmeranz, Gonzalez…etc…Just give the season a chance to start first…Long time Giants fans know how to suffer…LOL

Minor league deal. I get it…”no risk move”. Fine, he might have potential. We might strike lightening in a bottle. We’ve been sold the same story for four years. Still, this feels like more of the same picking from the scrap heap during an off season clouded with failure to land what we do desperately needed. I don’t suggest that 100% of this failure is all on Zaidi but the fact remains there is nothing exciting about this team with very little appeal to draw fans to the ballpark.
Less mad and more sad at the current state of this once championship-caliber franchise.

I don’t know, man. I think it’s exciting to watch Logan Webb pitch. I get excited to watch Doval come in for the ninth inning. I’m at least interested in seeing how all the new guys work out. I’m curious, if the Giants make the playoffs again, are people still going to be crying about lack of “star” power?

giantsguy41, Have you not been paying attention? Every single team in MLB is making these types of signings. With almost all the ML talent gone, every team is looking to add to their MiL depth. In the last 4 hours the Cards and Twins made MiL depth signings. If FZ was not making deals like this then I might begin to question his competence.

I for one am looking forward to seeing Haniger in a Giants’ uni. I’ve long been high on him. His teammates nicknamed him ‘the Shed’, in the minors, because the shed has all the tools. If he’s healthy I think Giants’ fans are going to love him.

This is what a “prospect” looks like. Looks like a slugger, but never had a good OBP. or the truth, never hit more than 16 HR 8n a season. Not gonna cut it for a first baseman

I get it, but this is just a depth and break glass in emergency move, which all teams need to make….Giants have helped their minor league teams with moves like this and some have come up to help or surprised people and struck around…Just have to see how it plays out…
