Padres Expected To Pursue Extension With Manny Machado

By Darragh McDonald | February 9, 2023 at 4:54pm CDT

The Padres already grabbed headlines earlier today by agreeing to an extension with Yu Darvish that runs through 2028. It seems the next order of business will be Manny Machado, with Dennis Lin of The Athletic reporting that the club is expected to explore a long-term deal with their third baseman prior to Opening Day. Machado’s current deal runs through 2028 but he can opt out after the upcoming campaign.

After many excellent seasons with the Orioles and a brief cameo with the Dodgers, Machado hit the open market before the 2019 season. The Padres ended up winning the bidding by signing him to a 10-year, $300MM contract, though one that afforded him the ability to opt out and return to free agency after the fifth year. The first season of the deal was a bit disappointing by Machado’s standards, as he hit .256/.334/.462 for a wRC+ of 109. He also had to play 37 games at shortstop while Fernando Tatis Jr. was on the injured list, which dragged down his defensive numbers on the season. Machado finished the year with 2.2 wins above replacement per the calculations of FanGraphs, still solid but a big drop from the 7.0 fWAR he posted the year prior.

Since then, however, he’s been largely back to his old self, with the most recent campaign arguably the best he’s ever had. He hit 32 home runs and stole nine bases in 2022, finishing the year with a .298/.366/.531 batting line and 152 wRC+. Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating thought his glovework was subpar, but Machado posted eight Outs Above Average. His 7.4 fWAR was the highest tally of his career and trailed only Aaron Judge among all position players on the year. He finished second in the National League Most Valuable Player voting with Paul Goldschmidt taking the trophy.

If Machado’s 2023 campaign is even half as good as that, he should be looking at a fairly easy opt-out choice at the end of it. The original deal was structured evenly, with Machado getting a $20MM signing bonus and $10MM salary in 2019, with $30MM salaries in each season after. That means he currently has six years and $180MM remaining as of this moment, but will be down to five years and $150MM once he has to make his decision.

Machado is 30 years and will be 31 this winter, when he could theoretically be a free agent. That’s a different situation than when he was first on the open market as a 26-year-old, but a huge deal should still be attainable, especially when looking at the deals that star players have been signing lately. Judge is just about to turn 31 and secured himself a nine-year, $360MM deal that runs through his age-39 campaign. Trea Turner is about to turn 30 but got himself an 11-year, $300MM deal into his age-40 season. Carlos Correa had two separate deals scuttled by concerns over the long-term health of his ankle and still secured himself a $200MM guarantee over six years with four vesting options. Jacob deGrom is about to turn 35 and has missed significant time recently but still got $185MM over five years.

The Padres have shown that they’re not afraid to give out these kinds of deals. A couple of months ago, they gave 30-year-old Xander Bogaerts an 11-year, $280MM contract and just today agreed to keep Darvish around through his age-41 campaign. Keeping all that mind, an MVP-level talent like Machado should be able to easily find himself a guarantee larger than the five years and $150MM he’ll be sitting on at season’s end. If he were to opt out, he would arguably be the second-best free agent available in next winter’s class, behind only Shohei Ohtani. That potentially creates a situation where the ticking clock ratchets up the tension throughout the year and perhaps the club would prefer to get something done now in order to avoid that distraction.

The Padres don’t exactly have a clear long-term payroll, as Bogaerts is under contract through 2033 and Tatis 2034, but they’ve shown a clear willingness to be flexible in getting deals done when they want to. In the short term, they might have to think about the competitive balance tax, as they have been hovering around the $273MM third tier recently. If they finish the season above that line, they will not only pay higher tax rates but will also see their top pick in the 2024 draft bumped back by ten spots. Since the luxury tax is calculated by a contract’s average annual value, perhaps the Padres try to spread out a new deal in order to lower the CBT hit.

Whatever form the contract eventually takes, it seems the Padres would rather keep Machado around than see him dive back into the free agent waters. We shall find out in the next little while if they can get something done before Opening Day, which is now about seven weeks away.

Padres are trying up an insane amount of payroll long term. The Soto trade was the final nail in their coffin at any chance of a long term window. After 2024 that team will be lucky to finish in 3rd place.

They already have an agreement with the second best international prospect next year after signing the top international prospect this year.

People can hate on preller but he definitely knows how to build up a farm system.

          No.

Most of the Padres past “elite prospects” have turned into anything but elite ML players.

The strategy is to use their “farm capital” to take on large salaries in trade – as they’ve been doing for years now. The NBA no longer takes draft choices seriously, and the Padres are doing the same thing with their farm system prospects. They’re just trade chips for established players – the owner will happily go over the salary cap and pay the tax. Like they care.

They will get a deal done with manny and I’d give them a very good chance of extended Soto. Heck even then I’d expect them to be heavy players for Ohtani.

The owner has said he doesn’t look at this as a window and as long as he is willing to spend the window as people call it will be open.

Doubt that they can absorb both Ohtani and Soto, especially if they have to extend Manny at a higher AAV. They may not get either Ohtani or Soto. They will throw money at them.

At some point money matters. Can’t extend/re-sign everyone. And the CBT will incrementally hurt more the more consecutive years you go over. It may not now but in a couple of years it will. The more money you tie up on superstar players the less you will have to fill the rest of the roster.

I think they will sign manny to a lower aav and by giving him 12 years. They know the tax is the real issue and the way around it is to pay players into their 40’s to lower the aav therefore lowering the tax hits.

Why would they have to increase Manny’s AAV? The reality is they will probably go longer than 10 and lower his AAV. Given their recent deals, 11/300 or 12/320 is the type of deal I am expecting.

Manny doesn’t care about AAV. He cares about total dollars and a chance to win. He has expressed a desire to “be a Padre for life” and to have a statue next to Tony Gwynn. That doesn’t happen unless he gets creative with length of contract so they can continue to build around him.

As far as Ohtani and Soto go, I believe the Padres will go all in on Ohtani. If they get him, then they don’t extend Soto. If they are not able to sign him, they go all in on a Soto extension as long as he has a good 2023.

That’s a pretty good call, i.e. Soto or Ohtani, but probably not both (they don’t actually need both for the roster construction). Judge just proved that just because a team wants a player, and is willing to pay literally “top dollar”, that doesn’t guarantee the player wants the team. For example, if Miami were to get it’s act together, I could see Manny at least thinking about finishing his career back home, but not at the cost of losing seasons, mostly determined by opening day.

The Pads are playing for aces, position players or pitchers, and Seidler’s willing to risk ponying up for the bill. Thus far, every time the Pads have escalated payroll, Padres fans have been willing to come out and pay it, in terms of seats, merchandize, food, and the whole entire Padres experience.

The thing about Seidler is (a) he’s from a baseball family, i.e. he KNOWS what he’s doing, and (b) he’s a venture capital type investor, he knows how to take risks, mitigate risks, and make a dollar to cover the costs + risks. The Padres aren’t a vanity purchase for him (which appears to be the case for many wealthy owners/ownership groups). It’s a long term BUSINESS investment for he and his family. He won’t care how many years the Pads have to pay the lux tax, if it accomplishes the goal. AJP is more likely to call “uncle” first, due to the impact on future draft prospects, but thus far, the Pads staff has been able to find ways to keep rebuilding without those top draft picks. If they’re in the hunt for the World Series year after year, they aren’t going to HAVE any top draft picks, anyway, so why worry about that?

I honestly think the lux tax is irrelevant for the Padres, for the next 3 to 5 years, while they build a solid, repeatable, winning foundation.

The Padres owner (along primarily with the Mets owner) is trying to take MLB to where the NBA is…..

Draft choices mean nothing anymore – they’re just trade chips. No one wants to take time to develop youngsters, they’ll just pay for the ones that are developed. 26 of the 30 NBA teams are over the cap, and 2 of the 4 under it are under by less than $1m (current salary cap is $123,655,000).

The NBA shares most revenues, so teams can do that. But if we see perhaps 12-15 of the 30 MLB teams routinely going over the cap, the owners under have no way of competing with the revenues they bring in. Since MLB League owners are in fact partners, the cap penalties will have to be radically increased and the majority will vote for it. If the players union holds it up the league will not play for a season or two. The solution of course is total revenue sharing.

Say it again Sam. Most teams love prospects and will continue to. The NBA draft has few elite prospects and it’s hard to find something outside the very top of the draft. They also don’t have 5 years to develop them and another 7 to keep them for minimum wage and no guarantee money other than signing bonus.

Add 5/$120m to his current deal.

His next 11 years pays him $300m (More than they just gave Bogaerts, which IMO will be his ask)

His AAV on the current contract actually goes DOWN. Total deal would be 15/$420 or $28m AAV compared to the $30m he is at now.

Manny will get a new 12 year deal, it will start this year. 12/300m, added to the deal he has been paid will lower his aav. Padres will continue to do deals to pay players until their early 40’s to save on the tax hits by lowering their aav’s. Even if they don’t keep them all playing that long the money they save on the tax penalties pays for all of that. If the player plays well into their 40’s that’s a bonus.

        Good luck with that.

I don’t even know if the players union allows voiding a current deal to replace with a new one, it certainly hasn’t happened on a high profile case recently.

Somewhere in there during this drive to do long term deals that has become so prevalent in the game today, there should be some form of assigned risk factor that pertains to the actual % of the roster that is under a long term deal.

As much as I admire what the Braves have managed to do with so many youngsters only tied up into their prime years, they are still going into the next few seasons with a high floor on the payroll that will leave them much less room for maneuvering and subject to the tax unless they make other moves. A little bit of bad injury or performance downturn related issues and then the lack of fluidity can hamper finding other solutions, unless they are willing to step up into the stupid money game (hat tip to my team owner).

Staggering the end of terms seems to be a part of the solution. And yeah…teams certainly know all of this as they project their payroll obligations into the future. But, without actually digging into the details for the Padres, they seem to be locking themselves into a far higher risk area than most others in a market that cannot quite support their level of current spending..

Braves are fine. When you look up that many all stars you don’t need much else. Rosario Ozuna Morton and others will be coming off the books. Extend Grissom and or another youngster and start shopping at the dollar store. Lots of good players in the 3 to 10 million range.

The Braves probably ARE fine…but the theory still applies. They have corporate ownership that is spending more than they ever have before, and if too many things go wrong, well…I have spent a lot of years watching big corporations change their approach to budgeting due to influences that have nothing to do with the situation at hand. So – a major injury to Strider and Riley, along with Acuna not getting his head together…tied into corporate undergoing internal or external market changes and who knows?

This does not mean that I don’t approve of, or am not slightly jealous of what AA has been doing.

They should tap the brakes on a Grissom extension. MLB history is littered with exciting, small sample rookies who never lived up to that rookie season the rest of their career.

Examples: Grissom had a 121 OPS+ (with a very high .350 BABIP) and 0.8 WAR in 41 games. Shane Spencer had a 236 OPS+ and a 1.1 WAR in 27 games as a rookie and was mediocre the rest of his career. Rico Brogna had a 158 OPS+ and 1.2 WAR in 39 games as a rookie and ended up with a negative career WAR. And on and on.

      CarverAndrews;

The Padres will work around it. In least 5 years most of these players that look great in 2023 will regress as they age and their production will go down. Now, assuming the Padres bring in enough revenue, they won’t care about having underperforming contacts on the books – they’ll just buy more young free agents. Maybe move a few guys to other teams to get roster spaces and pay a good portion of their remaining salaries.

As I noted above – when fans in the bottem half of markets realize that they’re a farm club to the top 12-15 markets and the only name players that can get are over-the-hill players from the larger markets that pay a large portion of their salaries – they’ll lose interest in MLB. Without total revenue sharing this is where MLB is headed. The Seidler’s and Cohen’s could care less about how MLB plays nationwide. They’re only concerned with their team and how its market supports the team.

@Samuel – RE: the Padres handling it. Perhaps, but I would feel far less secure with their position than some of the other high spending teams. They are definitely edging into new territory for them. Clearly, the owner has given the green light, but if they don’t bring home the hardware in the next three years what if he alters his approach? Their safety net is not quite as large, unless he just decides to fund it in a huge way from outside interest.

As far as the “farm club” scenario…you know the history lesson. Most of the formative years and the “glory years” in baseball were under a system where even fewer teams had a real shot most of the time. No way that the Yankees win 20 WS titles if they don’t have two key factors – utter market / destination dominance that gave them much more of an unfair advantage than today, added to the win the pennant and head straight to the WS setup that was in place. Even more teams were “farm Clubs” in a way than today.

So as much as the game is filled with market=based inequities today, the gap is smaller than before due to the revenue sharing models. Plus, sports have become professionalized over time, so we don’t have penny-ante owners making arbitrary decisions anymore. Heck, as recently as the Carlton trade, the Cardinals unloaded him because the owner refused him a reasonable raise (don’t remember how much, but it was in the thousands per year).

My guess is that baseball continues in fits and starts to address the market variance dynamics even more over time.

      In 8 seasons COMBINED.

He misses an average of 4.75 games a season.

Him “not working hard” is basically the worst take of the day.

People outside of San Diego who have concluded he isn’t staying just made up a story as they always do for everyone that they decide will come to NY or wherever. Absolute delusion. There isn’t even a small feeling of doubt in SD about Machado staying with the padres for his entire career. After all the money Seidler has spent, what makes you think Machado is where the line is drawn in terms of payroll? Seidler just said he will do everything to keep Manny in San Diego. Pretty straight forward. Any article or mention of him going to Yankees or Mets is just some rando in NY who needed some clicks.

As I’ve written elsewhere, Manny loves home, which is Miami. If he thought Miami would be anywhere near competitive, home plus Florida’s zero income tax rate, might very well push him to finish his career at home.

However, that’s about the only direction other than San Diego, I think he might go. He might have liked the bright lights of L.A., but the Dodgers and he didn’t exactly mix. From everything I’ve heard and read, he’s happy with his pay, he’s happier than he’s ever been in San Diego (and he liked Baltimore a lot when he was there), and if AJP and his agent can work out the details, that extension is a done deal, just simple paperwork.

Again, I don’t have special sources, and Manny is actually a “bright lights” kind of guy (i.e. he’s a Miami boy), but he’s never sought out Chicago, NY, or other Eastern big city destinations, and LA clearly didn’t work out. I think he fits in San Diego, and recognizes that. I also don’t think he’s hoping to be the first 3/4 $BILLION ballplayer, either.

Do you honestly believe Peter Seidler is going to be outbid? His track record right now is basically flawless in this regard.

The Dodgers already passed on Machado so I don;t see them bidding on him.

The CBT went up this year given the new deal in place, next off season will be much a much tighter market.

I love all the accountants on here pretending like they know what team’s yearly finances are. Hate to break it to y’all, but I’d be willing to bet that in reality, every MLB team banks between 100m-400m after everything’s said and done..and if any owner wants to cut into that amount to get better? They can do exactly what Seidler’s doing in SD..but they chose to be mediocre in most cases, and just pocket the profits.

Personally, I think Seidler’s lifting the veil on how much behind the scenes money there is..and I’d be willing to bet that even with the payroll shooting through the roof, he still banks somewhere in the mid level of all teams at the end of the year through greatly increased revenues.

By some accounts, the team value’s tripled over the last 5 years under his watch..and maaaan..I’m glad I’m here to see it.

Teams can reduce the CBT hit by adding extra years, reducing the AAV. It’s a common practice. But there are limits. MLB is not going to allow a team to sign a 31 year-old guy to a 14 year deal. When it becomes clear CBT manipulation MLB will step in.

Another thing is how many guys can you do that with? At some point, paying tens of millions of dollars to multiple players in their 40s is going to be a problem. Sure, teams can release non-productive players, but they still have to pay them. There has to be some point where that starts to hurt a team and their payroll flexibility.

Depends on if they all become 40 at the same time. Darvish will be 40 way before Xander. Now if they pay machado until he is in his 40’s then Xander and machado would both be 40 around the same time. Tatis only runs until he is 35. If they did the same thing with Soto he would be 40 after these guys are off the books. They could also front these deals since is more about keeping the aav down. So the amount they get in the 40 range could be pretty manageable.

It still seems to me that it isn’t that free of problems, just slapping extra years on a deal to reduce the AAV. Front loading the deals helps, but for guys in the $25M-$30M AAV range, it’s still going to be tens of millions for multiple players in their 40s. Plus, MLB would not allow the front loading to be extreme, since it would be obvious CBT manipulation.

Realistically though..Darvish is still most likely very good for the next 3-4 years, then is serviceable for the last couple..and even if he’s a 4.5 era guy in ‘26-‘28 at 18m/yr, based on the way the salaries are skyrocketing, and the way the luxury tax threshold is going up, it seems that’ll be about where he’d be valued in the market.

FirstRoundAdiosMets, I completely agree. My post was a general team-wide comment. I think the Darvish extension is a really good deal that should pay off for them. I’m just thinking that the Padres signing/re-signing/extending a number of guys, and adding years on to reduce the AAV is eventually going to give them several guys that are going to be paid a lot of money when they’re in their late 30s and even 40+.

It’s just that a number of posts suggested extending Machado, and Soto by adding years on to their deals. With Bogaerts being paid almost $25M in his age 40 season, it seems like it could be a problem adding a couple more guys like that, as well as wanting to sign Ohtani. At some points the chickens will come home to roost.

There is a good chance you may have some dead money on the books the last 1-3 years or so. The dead money on the back end is less than the tax hit on the front end. So overall it’s less money for the padres and pays the player what they want. Plus there is good reason to believe todays athlete is better conditioned to play longer and still be useful.

It’s pay more today or pay less tomorrow. They will pay at some point.

The other thing to keep in mind is where will the tax level be in 5 years. It very well may go up to 260-280m in 10 years. Making the back end of these deals even cost less.

There is real risk, no doubt but the padres owner will do pretty much anything to win a championship.

MLB revenue, meaning team revenue, roughly doubled from 2011 to 2022. If it does that in the next 12 years, then teams can continue to spend on players.

Seidler has had Manny involved in re-designing the Clubbouse.
He just built a home and says he wants to stay.
Think of it this way….why would SD have signed Xander if that meant they wouldn’t have the $ to extend Machado?
    Answer is they wouldn’t.
Machado is next and IMO it will be before the WBC starts.
