Giants Place Joc Pederson On IL With Right Wrist Inflammation

By Simon Hampton | April 15, 2023 at 10:48am CDT

The Giants have placed outfielder Joc Pederson on the 10-day injured list with right wrist inflammation. They’ve recalled Matt Beaty to take his place on the active roster.

Pederson was off to a solid start for the Giants this year, slashing .242/.350/.545 with a pair of home runs through his first 40 plate appearances of the season. Losing him is a sizeable blow to the middle of the Giants lineup which is already depleted, with Mitch Haniger, Austin Slater and Roberto Perez all out, while Michael Conforto is also currently out of the lineup with a calf problem.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters, including Evan Webeck of the Mercury News, that the hope is Pederson’s stay on the IL will be a short one. The Giants certainly need him back, going into Saturday’s games they sit 5-8 in the NL West and are a looking up at the Dodgers, Padres and Diamondbacks all above them.

In Pederson’s place the team will turn to Beaty, an infielder/outfielder who signed with the team on a minor league deal this winter. Beaty has appeared for three teams in his career, both in the NL West, as he suited up for the Dodgers and then Padres. He holds a solid enough career .250/.321/.405 line in the big leagues, but struggled to a .093/.170/.163 line over 47 plate appearances for the Padres last season.

The clock is ticking on Farhan; 4-5 yrs in and you should start to see young, athletic, drafted players start to reach MLB readiness. In comparing him to the somewhat recent rebuilds of Theo Epstein’s Cubs(2011-2016) and Jery Dipoto’s Mariners, he’s WELL behind their pace.

The Giants won 107 games in 2021. However that team was assembled, that’s still a sure sign of something going right.

It’s not 2021 anymore and where are the young, athletic prospects nearing MLB readiness?…4-5 yrs in and I really don’t see much progress from the Farhan-led rebuild. What I see are a lot of short term, fairly average free agent signings, other team rejects and AAAA players.

#gbs42 – I’m a Giants fan and was one of Farhan’s biggest supporters. I’ve woken up. It’s not 2021 anymore, we need to let that go. Last year we regressed to not being a winning team and missing the playoffs. This year we haven’t been able to get a single game above .500, falling further back, as we play MLB’s worst teams. What we have got is Darin Ruf back, and old dodgers retreads, like Beaty, to ‘get younger and more athletic’.
Bart and Sabol batting 8th & 9th, no protection behind them, sabotaging their young careers… What a joke

2021 was awesome, but there was so much that went right that year that isn’t sustainable. Ruf and Wade has crazy good years. We had the best year of Brandon Crawford’s career, one of the best of Brandon Belt’s career, and one of the best of Buster Posey’s career. We had the rise of Logan Webb and the rise of Gausman as a legit #1-#2 starter. A lot of people either over-performed or had career years. Any Giants fan that is still riding that wave is not very smart.

They lost Posey, they lost Gausman, they lost Rodon, they lost Belt. Those 4 players are big pieces to have and lose. Crawford will probably not have a 141 OPS+ season again, we’re looking more around a 100 OPS+ season or lower for him. Wade may turn out to be a solid every day player, Ruf might have a good year left in him, but holding out hope for them to do what they did in 2021 is foolish.

There are a lot of young guys on the team, they just need to secure a couple of those cornerstone guys, and they’re going to have to spend money to do it. They’re going to have to risk having a bad end of contract to get a player on the caliber of an Aaron Judge or a Carlos Correa.

You guys are just bitter internet warriors. Winning in baseball is hard and Farhan has done a good job. He just happens to play against the Dodgers and Padres who have been really good the last few years. It’s still the first half of April. Real baseball fans don’t freak out after 2 weeks. Plus Kyle Harrison is one of the top rated LHP and he’s ready or close to it.

It’s not Y’ou guys’, it’s myself. I’m an individual fan, with my own opinion. I was one of Farhan’s biggest fans, but I woke up. The way he disrespected Crawford in the offseason and is so bent on sabotaging Bart’s career says a lot. Beaty batting 5th, while Bart and Sabol bat 8th and 9th, with zero protection behind them… What a joke

This particular front office, the lineup card is coming from up above. I saw a show about it, just last night. The anylytics and being in lock step together, ect. I don’t blame you for not knowing though. I don’t think it’s normal.

Wrong #FF- Kapler does the lineup. I’ve heard beat reporters and KNBR hosts ask this exact question to Farhan and it is Kapler that makes out the lineup. Stop spreading misinformation, so weary of it.

A lot of people attribute The Dodger’s Friedman’s success mainly to analytics, but they forget the Dodgers have LONG had some of the most experienced, astute SCOUTS in the baseball business.

Analytics is just a new way of doing old things. And now it’s a BS built in excuse if things go wrong. Like taking out a pitcher who is coasting and putting in a reliever who blows the game. “Hey, the analytics said…”

No farhan has done a bad job and needs to be let go. The team has been awful every year except the biggest fluke year by a team in recent memory. I’m really tired of the “we’re better than you, keep talking you worm” ultra smug Giants fans who lick the boots and gang up on any dissenters. It’s pathetic. To be a fan of farhan wow.

Hi mlb fan- Farhan’s first draft in 2019 was with the old regimes scouts since he was hired too late to get his own crew in there. Then the pandemic in 2020 stopped all minors development, this is true of all teams yes but extra hard for a new POBO. Then the lockout.

Sabean and Evans had terrible drafts the last ten years before Farhan took over. The last of the Sabean/Evans draft picks are coming up now—Bart, Villar, Hjelle, Ramos, Webb etc. Farhan was gifted a terrible farm and long contracts to the legacy players.

Farhan’s first draft picks are just now reaching AAA. We are going to see Casey Schmitt, Kyle Harrison, Cole Waites, and maybe more this year.
It took Sabean 14 years before he won the World Series, Zaidi is just getting going. Baseball is all about the long view. Social media is all about trashing everyone and everything instantly, try to avoid churning out the same pablum as all of them.

#agnes gooch – This front office and management treats players like crap. Why Austin Wynns elected free agency, after saying he’d like to stay. Why Correa isn’t here and Crawford almost got shifted to 3B, with no communication beforehand.
Maybe we can smile about the extra 3 years of team control Webb’s extension provides, but other than that, not much. Feels like Farhan and Kapler are trying to make it hard for the draft picks from the previous regime to succeed. That feels petty. Hjelle is a rookie SP, yet Kapler used him as a set up guy and fireman today. Out of his element and we lost. Bart hitting 8 & 9, with no protection behind him? Light tower power though…

I don’t get why some fans would rather make every excuse for a faulty plan from an ego driven arrogant man who doesn’t even like baseball. It’s really weird. You enjoy the giants since farhan took over? Go ahead I guess. I’d prefer to have some hope in my team again, but his entire philosophy is rotten. They giants won’t win a single playoffs series as long as farhan is there, and as long as the giants reAl estate deals keep coming up golden, no one will care. Including you boot licking fans I guess. Makes me wanna lay my head down on a railroad track when I see how sad people have gotten in this world lol

Not a Giants fan, but should note they were in on most free-agents. They were the first team Correa agreed to sign with – for $350m. I’d guess that was their plan A and when that fell apart it was too late to sign anyone else as they’d all already been signed by other teams. You can’t really hold that against him.
