Red Sox Claim Brennan Bernardino From Mariners

By Mark Polishuk | April 16, 2023 at 4:17pm CDT

The Red Sox announced that left-hander Brennan Bernardino has been claimed off waivers from the Mariners.  Bernardino was designated for assignment earlier this week.  To create 40-man roster space, the Sox moved righty Zack Kelly to the 60-day injured list.

Beginning his pro career as a 26th-round pick for the Reds in the 2014 draft, Bernardino finally made it to the big leagues last season, appearing in two games for Seattle and posting 2 1/3 innings of work.  Some nice numbers with Triple-A Tacoma in 2022 helped pave the way for Bernardino’s MLB debut, but the results haven’t been there in a small sample size this year, as the southpaw had a 12.00 ERA in six innings for Tacoma this season.

Bernardino’s career has taken him through the affiliated minors (with Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Seattle) and also to the Mexican League for parts of three seasons.  He’ll now add Boston to his resume, giving the Red Sox some extra left-handed relief depth.  Richard Bleier is the only lefty in Boston’s Major League bullpen, as Joely Rodriguez is on the injured list and Ryan Sherriff is at Triple-A.  In all likelihood, Bernardino will join Sherriff as the top left-handed options in Worcester should the Sox feel the need for more southpaw help in the Show.

Kelly was placed on the 15-day IL three days ago due to elbow inflammation, though Kelly was so obviously distraught while leaving the mound that it certainly seemed like he had suffered a more serious injury.  Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters (including MLB.com’s Ian Browne) yesterday that Kelly’s MRI results were going to be viewed by the doctor who performed Kelly’s internal bracing procedure in 2020.  No official word has come about Kelly’s status, though the 60-day IL placement will keep the right-hander on the shelf until at least mid-June.

Yeah they must be desperate if they are picking up a minor league depth reliever. Makes total sense.

You don’t know how Bloom operates this guy will be pitching in high leverage for Boston by the end of the week

YOU don’t know how Bloom operates. Chris Martin, Kensley Jansen and John Schreiber are their back end with a little Braiser sprinkle

Chris Martin is hurt and more importantly, a lot of money was paid to him for the second half of last year. Suppose his splits were reversed last year. Do you still want him as your lock down 8th inning guy? Obviously, I hope I’m wrong.

dewey – Excellent post as always! Yes everyone was okay with the Martin contract, but it always included one big caveat … “if he can stay healthy”.

And the way Cora manages the bullpen, there will ALWAYS be lesser relievers thrown into high leverage situations. Look at today’s game, Ort pitched the 8th and Brasier the 9th. Credit where it’s due, Ort’s pickoff was a thing of beauty and helped him maintain the lead.

You roll with Martin until he doesn’t perform. Bullpen arms are the easiest to find, hell absolute worst case scenario you can move either Houck or Sale. I do want to see about 3 months of work out of Sale in the rotation but my suspicion is that he’s done as a starter. Let him go in for just an inning or 2 I think he’d be lights out. It kinda reminds me of John Smoltz. I could be wrong that’s why I want Sale in the rotation until the All-Star break, give him a real chance to showcase himself. I believe right now though, he will be in the bullpen by year end.

If relievers are so damn easy to find then why the hell did Bloom give $49.5m to both Martin and jansen

I’m asking myself that question. Management clearly believes Houck and Whitlock should be in the rotation, moving them shows us that relievers are cheaper than starters and easier to get. If it was the other way around they would of kept both of them in the pen. It’s easier to find a rookie or young player to get ya out an inning. I’m not against paying Jansen, he’s a proven entity when right he gets the job done. I don’t know what Martin has done that anybody else can’t do. I wouldn’t of signed him, I would of looked in the farm. Martin is a waste of money you ask me, but since he’s here with that salary the job is his.

For starters, relievers make money now and we all know closers get paid and that is why Jansen got $32 million for two years.

This is just another churn and burn arm for when the pen is overextended. Nothing to see here.

When you remember, they just called up one disposable depth arm, it only makes sense to claim another.

Not desperate, simply refilling the bullpen after injuries to:

      Kelly 60-day IL
      Paxton 60-day
      Martin 15-day…..

      ….what all 30 MLB teams do….

The team is paper-thin as it is currently constructed. Losing even one player made it a long shot to compete.

Dogham – Just a standard move by a man packing his bags.

It’s great that Boston has won 3 against the Angels but if you review who they have beat this year it explains why they were in first before they got to Boston. Took 2 of 3 vs a bad As team, same with a slightly better Mariner team then beat a bad WAS team 2-1 before landing in Boston. The LAA team looks very average as does the AL West other than Houston and Texas. If they can beat LAA on Patriot’s Day they will climb back up to a 74 win pace!! Minnesota is next. They swept KC then lost 2 of 3 to Miami, then took 2 out of 3 from a struggling Astro team and 2 out of 3 from the White Sox and lost 2 out of 3 to NYY.

Based on performance to date, Minnesota should provide a better challenge than LAA did.

Fletcher- remember, Boston got swept by the Rays, and, haven’t really started playing and of the cream.of the crop teams of the league otherwise.

Three days ago it was a 5-8 ball club. What would that put them at for a season pace? Yep, thought so.

Don’t read too much into a team fighting to stay at .500, even more so when they havent touched the meat of their schedule yet……

And what exactly is your point? You say you shouldn’t read too much into a team’s record this early while defending the asinine 74 win comment because of what their record was 3 days ago. Pure derangement syndrome

Fwiw, losing so many games to them outside the LAA has helped fuel those winning percentages, and, youre not making an argument from a position of strength because you didn’t make the one extra step that’s missing.

If you were to claim the strength of schedule for the teams the red sox played was high based upon the talent levels of the teams that’s one thing.

But when you lost most of your series, and it’s early in the season, your opponents are getting a boost to their winning percentage.

Likewise, when most of your wins yourself come against DET (enough said) and now LAA (who mainly collects wins vs the nationals, scuffling mariners, and the athletics) it loses some of its luster doesn’t it?

It’s too early in the season being in its 4th series, and like I said, not having matched up against the balanced powerhouse teams yet to make reasonable extrapolation was my point, and I’m sticking to it.

Again, Boston SoS, and, SoS of the teams they played.

If this was a team which was all that good they should have 12 wins based on who they played. Maybe more.

TB cleaned up against the junk teams they played up till they met their first talented squad in Toronto.

Bro, you really are that clueless? Or you just like to find fault with anything the Red Sox do? Personally, I think it’s that latter because if your theory was right Houston would have swept Detroit and the White Sox . And the Rangers shouldn’t be 9-6 but instead should be 15-1 after sweeping the O’s, Cubs and Royals but that’s not how any of this works,

I’ve told them that before. It’s like a club where you have to hate every RS move with a passion. It doesn’t matter how minor the move. Guys like Politi, Darwinzon, Meneses, etc., get more than the Yankees will get for re-signing Judge. Fans of other teams have never heard of some of these guys, but some RS will be lining up at the Tobin over every AAA depth move.

Don’t sleep on the 8-8 Mariners, after a disappointing 1-3 series vs the Guardians and a split in another 2 game series with the Guardians. They have managed to go 6-4 in their other series. And the Astros currently sit at 7-9 and split with the 6-10 WS and lost the series 1-3 to the lowly 5-9 Detroit.

As I’ve said before, due to the pandemic, let’s wait until the end of 24 to grade Bloom. Such allows for his minor league pick ups and draft picks to start to develop. As an example, I was pushing for Bennie to have been traded one year earlier. Bloom then got crucified by many on this site but look at Wisniewski and Franchy now. Granted Franchy is not here and both could still pan out given the small 23 sample size. My point is most trades aren’t won or lost overnight. The one exception from many years ago was the Easler-Baylor trade between Boston and New York. Such worked out for both clubs but since Boston doesn’t make the 86 series without Baylor, they in my view won that deal after just one season.

Because there isn’t much demand for group pressers of clubs failing to meet potential that lose a ton of games?

Nobody says, let’s empanel a group of PBOs for losing clubs.

Great another AAA reliever who was getting lit up in AAA and we’re gonna add him to our pen???
Sox been making so many ridiculously stupid moves like trading Renfroe and Benny and getting absolutely nothing out of both of those trades.
Signing Sale for 4 more years when he had proven nothing after injury. Letting Bogey go and not resigning Vasquez who we could’ve had for cheap? Now all those guys are doing good or great so far this season.
