Red Sox Acquire Pablo Reyes

By Nick Deeds | May 12, 2023 at 12:09pm CDT

The Red Sox have acquired infielder Pablo Reyes from Oakland in exchange for cash considerations, the A’s have announced. Reyes had signed with Oakland on a minor league deal this past offseason.

The 29-year-old Reyes has appeared in parts of four seasons since making his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2018. That year, he hit well in 18 games for the Pirates, slashing .293/.349/.483 with a wRC+ of 126. That showing earned him an expanded role with the club in 2019, though he ultimately struggled over 157 plate appearances with the club to a slash line of just .203/.274/.322 that led the club to designate him for assignment in January of 2020. The following month, Reyes was served an 80-game suspension for PEDs, causing him to miss the entire pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Reyes latched on with the Brewers on a minor league deal ahead of the 2021 season, ultimately sticking with the club for two seasons. During that time, he slashed .258/.330/.344 with a wRC+ of 85 in 103 plate appearances before electing free agency after the 2022 season and signing with the A’s, for whom he did not appear in a major league game.

In addition to his time in the majors, Reyes has spent parts of 11 seasons in the minor leagues, including 1,265 plate appearances at Triple-A, which have resulted in a slash line of .274/.350/.419 at the highest minor league level. Much of Reyes’s value comes from his versatility, as the journeyman has appeared at every position on the diamond except for catcher.

Reyes figures to serve as infield depth in the upper minors for a Red Sox club that has struggled to keep players healthy in the middle infield this season. Infielders Trevor Story, Adalberto Mondesi, Yu Chang, Christian Arroyo, and center fielder Adam Duvall are all currently on the injured list after being penciled in for regular playing time up the middle for the Red Sox at one point or another.

          1) Fenway Park Ballgirls
          2) Nate’s Cy Young 2023 performance
          3) Red Sox looking better with the Mookie trade
          4) Vazquez evolving into a highly paid backup catcher
          5) Red Sox embarrassing loss at home to a 13-25 team
          6) Paxton’s amazing Red Sox debut

And what are your contributions, other than trashing fellow fans?

While hilarious, neither one of you or your other personalities stick to baseball on any consistent basis. You attack people constantly then try to act aggrieved when they push back. This childish act that you and your personalities play isn’t fooling anyone.

For all the tough talk you are incredibly overly sensitive especially when people point out your juvenile behavior.. If don’t like people responding in kind and you continue to be obnoxious (by saying Joe and I are the same person) and you can’t handle people pushing back when responding to your personal attacks than reconsider responding and making wild accusations in the first place.

I did wonder why they didn’t trade Kemp when they loaded up the truck. I don’t know what his salary is, but the A’s would probably want a king’s ransom for him, too. A lot of teams could use him.

They are at an estimated luxurury tax payroll of $221,112,000 according to Fangraphs. Penalties that could affect them next year start at $223,000,00 from the CBT. If they are trying to stay under, then yes, Kemps $3.7 mil is too much unless Oakland takes salary back. Do you think this current A’s team is looking to take on any additional payroll?

They are probably saving some cap space for the trade deadline. Adding Kemp would be a decent portion of their remaining cap space.

PED’s don’t help you make better swing decisions or make contact with breaking balls. He had some pop in his bat which regressed after the suspension so the PED’s probably did help him.

They want to stay under it and reset their tax number unless they are in contention at the trade deadline. They did leave themselves some room this year to add without going over. Personally I’d want them to make a play for Aroldis Chapman and secure the bullpen than Tony Peña.

The Red Sox don’t need anything right now. With limited funds and 124 games left they need to use the money when a key injury happens. They’ve been getting by with below league average guys playing far over their heads. If it continues and a key player like Verdugo, Yoshida or Turner go down they can use the remaining money to replace them. If Devers goes down, pack it in and play for next year.

There is way too much time left in the season to get too pumped up about the surprising start. If in two months they are in a similar situation, then it’s time to tinker and improve the team. Right now, it would be a waste because any day now the below league average players are going to walk in front of a mirror and realize who they are and start playing like it. When that happens, the first big slump of the season will happen. If they survive the slump, then there is hope. IF not, then all future acquisitions in 2023 need to be strategic not 2023 fixes.

Well, you predicted 74 wins, meaning for you to be correct the Red Sox would have to go 52 and 72 the rest of the way.

If you were wrong a month ago, why would you be right now?

sycophant – I didn’t predict that number I used a formula that was series specific to show a detailed analysis of the games to be played.

In April, the formula predicted 14-15. Thanks to a 2-1 series win vs CLE during the last series of the month they finished 15-14. 1 game over the 74 win pace. I’m not bad mouthing the Red Sox by posting the calculated win-loss totals based on how series usually turn out, it’s a probabilities game.

In May, the formula predicted 11-16 due to the tough schedule. Right now they are 7-3 thanks to the sweep of TOR which was predicted to be 1-3 so they are ahead of the 11-16 pace so far after 10 games. There are 17 more games to go this month and the formula says the upcoming series will conclude with a 9-8 record so May could end up at 16-11 instead of 11-16. That would move the end of season projection to 80 wins (6 more than the original 74 win pace(.

So here is a point of education for you. The team has been hot. They will cool off and start losing games they are predicted to win. The question is whether they will have more hot streaks than cold streaks. Since this team is filled with league average or below players on the hitting side it comes down to whether the pitching which is now the strength of the team can slow down opponents enough to allow the offense to put up enough runs to win games.

I’m pretty sure Duran won’t hit .375 for the year, McGuire won’t hit .317, Valdez won’t hit .311, Yoshida won’t hit .306 and Verdugo won’t hit .305. I think JT is about where he will finish at .273, Devers should hit 25 to 50 points higher than his current .248. Wong will hit below his current .247. Kiki will hit roughly what he’s hitting now .232.

So when you look at the future hitting other than Devers most will regress to their mean by falling off not getting better. Devers will off=set some of the drop off but overall the offense will drop off and regress to it’s predicted mean. That’s why the pitching is so critical. It needs to carry the team going forward for them to have a shot at winning 81 or more games.

Remind me again, I said the formula had them at 14-15 in April and they finished 15-14 and you are complaining that I missed a month’s projection by one game? Tough audience. This is all about strength of schedule. Based on the first month, lots of strange things happened around baseball. Good teams were bad and bad teams were good. That should clear up as we move into the summer months with good weather.

This time try to remember, the projections I detailed were based on strength of schedule not what I think they are going to do. Think of them as expected values based on their skill set and their opponents skill sets.

The posting of the projection gave a bench mark to compare to as the season progresses. It’s not a personal attack on the Red Sox or you so chill out and be thankful they are ahead of the 74 win pace.

Sycophant – I’m one of the people who have documented why the Red Sox are a 75 win team and yes Casas should go down.
You make an assumption that he’s good. You make an assumption that he’s better than Dalbec. Yet, the numbers show that Dalbec did better than Casas when he broke in and then couldn’t handle the adjustments.
How do you know Casas will handle the adjustments when he’s so bad right now there are no need for adjustments by the pitchers. They have his number.
That’s why even in another down year caused by Bloom, the Red Sox need to bring back the superior player Dalbec (based on evidence not opinion) and let him play 1B while Casas goes back to AAA and gets the proper time to develop as a hitter.
Put Casas in AAA. Live with Dalbec until Casas is ready or the end of the year. The team will still be at home watching the playoffs from their couches so no harm no foul. Casas might turn into the player everyone wants him to be but as of right now, he’s less likely than Dalbec based on preliminary performance
          ________________________________________________________________

Does Casas have 22 match series with a game on a base and he worse what Dalbec?
Check the numbers of Casas for the last week, his bat begins to warm up.
However we loves his force, but he so not decided a problem with a hole in beat is looks sadly, he goes out on a dish doomed, maybe Ortiz something will prompt him, but I think that Bobby such what he is, he beat practically on all pitchs.
.239 AVG with 40%SO in Triple AAA – nonviable in MLB.

I hope you it will comment on and won’t ignore.
