Red Sox Release Raimel Tapia, Outright Matt Dermody

By Mark Polishuk | June 11, 2023 at 3:08pm CDT

The Red Sox announced that outfielder Raimel Tapia has been released, and that left-hander Matt Dermody has been outrighted to Triple-A.  Both players were designated for assignment earlier this week.

Tapia signed a minor league deal with Boston during the offseason, and after his contract was selected, Tapia locked in a $2MM salary for the 2023 season.  The Sox are still on the hook for the remainder (roughly $1.22MM) of that money owed, and that salary could be why teams passed on Tapia on the DFA wire.  An interested club can now sign Tapia to a minors contract and only owe him the prorated MLB average salary, with the Red Sox covering the rest.

The 29-year-old Tapia is hitting .264/.333/.368 over 97 plate appearances this season, roughly in line with the career .277/.318/.392 slash line he carried with the Rockies and Blue Jays from 2016-22.  Limited mostly to facing right-handed pitching this year, Tapia has a hit a strong .309/.373/.441 in 76 PA against righties, and he has seen action for the Red Sox in all three outfield positions.

Since Tapia has over five years of Major League experience, he had the right to reject an outright assignment to Triple-A and elect free agency.  It could be that Tapia planned to take this avenue anyway, so the Sox simply opted to release him after no trade possibilities emerged when Tapia was on the waiver wire.  Given Tapia’s track record as a respectable backup outfield option and his good numbers against right-handed pitching, it seems likely that he’ll catch on with another team in relatively short order.

Dermody has been outrighted before in his career, so he also had the option to elect free agency but he has instead decided to remain in Boston’s organization.  In cup-of-coffee fashion, Dermody was selected to the Red Sox roster and then DFA’ed on the same day, with a four-inning start against the Guardians on June 8 sandwiched in between the two transactions.  It marked the first Major League start for Dermody, though he has started regularly in the minors and in his non-affiliated stints in the KBO League and with the independent Sugar Land Skeeters.

That one outing gave Dermody appearances in five different MLB seasons, though 23 of his 31 career games came with the Blue Jays in 2017.  The southpaw will likely continue starting at Triple-A Worcester, where he has a 4.50 ERA over 44 innings with a 24.4% strikeout rate and 4.7% walk rate.

Not if you want good defense in CF. Maybe if you can play him in LF.

Tapia to the platoon team Detroit. I guess there is no forgiving someone who listens to the National Anthem before every game, believing he had inalienable rights like to free speech. I wonder how long before deviant is removed from the dictionary ?

Damn!- Tapia is a talented & fun player to watch- he’s always 100% effort & has superior instincts. I hope he lands in a place where he will be mentored & given a chance.

Mafia – Simple answer! The Worcester Red Sox need starting pitching. Their preseason rotation:

    Winckowski (in Boston)
    Crawford (in Boston)
    Murphy (in Worcester bullpen)
Walter (starting all be it poorly)
    Mata (IL)

Bloom is employed to field baseball players on the field, not worry about who is offended!

Maybe more safe spaces are needed in your little corner of the world. You do not like what someone says then ignore it like grown ups do …..lol

There’s no scenario where he was the best option. He’s the easiest one, and that’s a huge let down to a lot of people.

Also, I can’t see my original comment for some reason. I’m going to be ticked off if it was deleted. I didn’t say anything wrong, and I didn’t engage the people that replied.

Agreed, your original comment should not have been deleted.

The Red Sox are extremely short on starters in AAA. They have been filling in with relievers who are only able to go 2 to 3 innings. These pitchers would have been useless for the MLB start. Two of the AA guys (including their current top pitching prospect, Drohan, were just called up to AAA, and 3 of his 4 starts he has gotten shelled). Red Sox brought Dermody up, because other options had just pitched or were ineligible. Dermody was also someone who if chosen off waivers, from the DFA, was someone they did not care if was selected by another team. Also, when a pitcher is sent down they can not be recalled for 15 days, so three of the pitchers they might have brought up were ineligible.

Mafia – I follow every AAA and AA Red Sox affiliate game and Dermody was the only available option at the time for that day that start.

Many readers on this site see a call up and think it is for long term, the next rookie, the new pitcher, or the next regular who will be a starter for the next five years. Most call ups are brief like for an IL player (10 to 15 days or less, or even one start). Sometimes if a player is chosen with no options, he is chosen because he is one they do not care if they loose and not necessarily the best player. It is to preserve depth or because the team does not want to start the 7 years of team control.

I need to clarify, I think.

I’m not talking about calling him up. The Sox botched that big time, but it is what it is. I contend that they would be better off releasing him and signing virtually anybody that can start a game to a minor league deal to take his place at Worcester. Where’s that scrapheap everyone complains about!? It’s not like they’re going to call him up again.

I have often found that people who use faith as an excuse for their views do not exactly live a Christian life that Jesus would have approved of.

I presume from the Old Testament. Most of the things that Jesus said was about loving people more, not less.

I don’t remember where I heard the quote from, but “If you need eternal damnation to be a good person, maybe you’re not such a good person” really fits with what you said.
If you believe God and Jesus are forgiving, then you should believe that they’ll forgive you for not taking the Bible word-for-word at face value. At least that’s what I believe.

Jesus said enough things for me to think that:

1-He doesn’t want us judging harshly.
2-He makes an accommodation that we can live under the laws of man AND under the laws of God (render unto Ceasar…).

Past that, if you are a person of faith, then I think you should defer to God’s judgement. If God believes that gays deserve eternal damnation (which I seriously doubt), then let Him take care of that. Most humans are barely able to care of themselves, let alone figure out who deserves eternal damnation.

Starters are Duval, Yoshida and Verdugo.

Duvual was hurt and they called up Duran

Duran has played better than Tapia, therefore Tapia goes. and Duran stays. Both hit from the left.

They also have Refsnyder but he hits right, so the completion for backup was between Druan and Tapia.

America is more free now than the god-awful good ol’ days you’re talking about. Freedom of speech has NEVER been a guarantee against consequences from society. Homophobes are correctly persona non grata.

Tigers seem to need Outfielders badly. Yankees make sense though McKinney is doing well so far. Either way I’m sure Tapia won’t be a free agent for long

Well, Colorado will be coming to town at exactly the right time for Boston. Hopefully they can use the couple games at home vs a weak opponent to stop their shuffling scuffling slide and built a little momentum, get back into positive win territory.

Then again, given this squad, I’m not counting those chickens before they hatch either.

The RS have been a series of starts and stops. 5-8, followed by 21-12, followed by 7-13, with mini-streaks inside those streaks.

This is more the glass half full, but in the past 5 games by our “regular” rotation of Paxton, Crawford, Whitlock, Houck, and Bello, they have 29.1 IPs, with only 9 ERs, and a 27/6 K/W. The entire rotation is inconsistent, but there is no reason to think we cannot win some games with those five SPs.

We need more consistent offense, and to IL Kluber. The return of Schreiber and either Joely or Bleier would be useful in that regard.
