The Reds have officially reinstated Joey Votto from the 60-day injured list, as was reported earlier this afternoon. Starter Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-day IL, retroactive to June 18, due to right hip pain. To clear a 40-man roster spot for Votto, Cincinnati designated righty Kevin Herget for assignment.
Greene has been battling hip discomfort for a few weeks. Cincinnati skipped one of his starts earlier in the month to give him extra rest. This’ll be his first IL stint of the season, as the pain returned during Saturday’s start against the Astros.
There’s no indication the Reds are overly concerned. As C. Trent Rosecrans of the Athletic notes (on Twitter), the Reds’ scheduled off day on Thursday means they won’t need a fifth starter until next Tuesday. By that point, right-hander Graham Ashcraft would be eligible to return from his own IL stint. Cincinnati skipper David Bell recently said the club anticipates Ashcraft being ready to come off the IL when first eligible (via MLB.com injury tracker).
Still, the Reds will have to navigate a couple weeks without arguably their best starter. Cincinnati has already been without Nick Lodolo for a while, and he’s not likely to return until August. The Reds’ young position player core has carried them to an eight-game win streak and within half a game of the lead in the NL Central. A temporary rotation of Ashcraft, Andrew Abbott, Ben Lively, Brandon Williamson and Luke Weaver is well below-average for a club battling for a playoff spot, though.
Herget has been working in long relief this season. He’s tallied 22 innings across 13 appearances, pitching to a 5.73 ERA while striking out only 11.5% of batters faced. Herget has thrown plenty of strikes but hasn’t missed many bats and has given up a lot of hard contact.
After a three-outing debut season with the Rays last year, Herget has gotten a career-high MLB workload in Cincinnati. He’ll likely land on waivers within the next week. The 32-year-old has cleared outright waivers before in his career, so he’d have the ability to test minor league free agency if he goes unclaimed.

If your name is Herget and you’re a relief pitcher, you will be sent to the minors. This is based on a sample size of two.

Votto is blocking CES. He didn’t hit in his stint at AA, so why do they expect him to hit in the majors? Votto is likely done since he is coming off a serious injury at an advanced age. Give the youngsters a look and also play to win. It will go a long way towards next season’s preparation.

Actually, Votto just returned so he hasn’t blocked anyone.
Wil Myers and Kevin Newman really was blocking him more, if anyone was. I think he would be on the Reds if he were ready.
hiflew
And honestly if you are saying that you are being blocked by Wil Myers and Kevin Newman, then you definitely aren’t ready.
Plus, this is Votto’s likely final season so patience is required for anyone else. If the youngsters are good enough, they will have plenty of time after this year to prove it. But 2023 is for Cincy and Votto to say goodbye.

This aged well.

1 game does not erase 113 games. Prior to that game he played 113 games in 2021 and 2022 between the majors and AAA. He batted under .200 in those games.

Green will need Tommy John within a year.

If he teaches him how to pitch, I’m all for it.
Larry Brown's crank
so….you dont know he’s already had tj surgery? good research
This one belongs to the Reds
Hard to research at White Castle!
Larry Brown's crank
fact!
nottinghamforest13
When did he indicate that he was unaware of the previous surgery?
Larry Brown's crank
we will never know knottingham….he wouldn’t admit to it now. he’d say…oh, I knew about the surgery. I meant ANOTHER tj surgery. lets see if he’s honest though, since you’re advocating for him.

It doesn’t take much to know he’s not Mensa material.
He’s on the DL with a minor hip issue to limit his innings. Capped at 150-175. That’s the sour point of development with younger pitchers. Ashcraft and Lodolo have the same. And now Lodolo has a foot issue with puts him back even more.
Of course he could always have Bo Jackson’s hip issues too. So all bets are off then.
Cincyfan85
The Reds need starting pitching yesterday. Maybe we can re-do that Luis Castillo trade? Lol
Larry Brown's crank
I hate these whiny Castillo posts. same people who weren’t happy trading Tyler mahle. or should we still cry about the frank Robinson trade.

I met an old guy the other day who was still crying about the Frank Robinson trade.
Motor City Beach Bum
Erod and/or Lorenzen from the Tigers for some of your minor league IF riches. Cam Collier is a good start coming back the other way.

I’m still mad about trading Joaquin Andujar before 1975 season to the Astros when he was top 5 in their pipeline. They figured we already have Mario Soto. We don’t need another hothead. It burned them in 1977.
Trading Mike Caldwell same day they got Seaver in 77 for nothing. He goes to MIL and Bamberger turns him into a 22 game winner within 1-2 years.
Letting Danny Tartabull go in the Rule 5 in 1983.
Trading Jeff Montgomery in 1988 for another OF when they could always use more pitching.
I’m still very upset they traded Christi Mathewson for Rusie in 1902 because the Reds owner had stakes in Giants ownership. You could get away with that stuff back then.

When everyone is healthy, should that ever happen, there may be a few guys in AAA that will be solid but no room on the big club for.
That’s where a small market club wants to be so they can plug and play as guys leave for the large market big money or injuries happen.
CardsFan57
I’d really enjoy seeing Votto have a season like Pujols had last year.
nottinghamforest13
Greene’s “me first” attitude will hold him back more than the injuries will.
J5
You absolutely have no idea what you are talking about, do you? Greene is a phenomenal teammate and a major community supporter and leader. After his TJ in the minors a few years back has worked his butt off to get here. Your trash trolling don’t fly bruh.
Larry Brown's crank
J5….dont feed the idiots. Hunter Greene was raised the right way.

Reds are winning. But 5/8 have been STL & KC. Not world beaters. Still a very long way to go.

Convenient of you to leave out the 3 vs HOU
octavian8
You are searching hard for a dark side to this streak

Because of injury, Reds pitching is thin. Nevertheless Krall & DJ are weeding out some older pitchers (Chase Anderson, Herget)and replacing them with younger guys (Andrew Abbott, Daniel Duarte, Salazar). The transformation continues-even as Reds ascend into contention.

Green is at about a 160-175 innings limit. After TJS and pitching very little the year before that.
CES is ready. They just don’t want to have this many rookies. It seems like anyways in this roster.
India had Boros as an agent. He’s not much for signing LTC with team friendly numbers before FA. He might get traded after year 5 before FA or maybe they keep him past that and just get a draft pick.
This is why you still need Marte and Arroyo. They also have an OF named Carlos Jorge who has good OB skills and power. Conner Phillips who came in one of the Seattle trades is the RH version of what Andrew Abbott has been doing.
They weren’t ready for the rebuild to be this good this fast no doubt. They had to manage Hunter. Lodolo. Ashcraft innings to begin with. That’s why they didn’t spend on at least another retread. That’s what it looks like to me. Now they should stay the course of being the Midwest TB Rays but spend more. Which is not hard.
If TB can sign their SS for 11 years at 182M or so then maybe they can find a way to do it with EDC or Matt.
And yes I am aware of the small market issue. They’re not as small and money short as they want you to believe. They still have to be smart with their money sure. Just spread it out better. Avoid the Moose type contract. The Castellsnos one was not bad. They took on Gray. They spent then Covid happened and it Fd them.
