Yankees To Place Aaron Judge On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | June 6, 2023 at 11:58pm CDT

The Yankees are placing defending AL MVP Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list, manager Aaron Boone told the team’s beat after tonight’s loss to the White Sox (relayed by Erik Boland of Newsday and Brendan Kuty of the Athletic). Judge has a bruise and ligament sprain in his injured right big toe.

Judge suffered the injury on Saturday. Pursuing a J.D. Martinez fly ball to the warning track, he crashed into the right field wall. The 6’7″ outfielder knocked through the wall with his upper body but struck his foot against its concrete base. He finished out that game but hasn’t played since upon reporting toe discomfort. (Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported this evening the Dodgers are adding a layer of padding at the bottom of the wall in response to the injury.)

The Yankees can backdate Judge’s IL placement to Sunday, so he’ll only officially be out for another week. Whether he’ll be able to return when first eligible isn’t clear, though he appears to have avoided a fracture that’d have raised the specter of a particularly lengthy absence. Judge has already been on the IL once this season. He returned after a minimal stay last month with a right hip strain.

Frustrating as the health issues have been, Judge is again playing at an MVP level. While he was never expected to repeat last year’s record-setting 62 homer season, he’s barely taken a step back. Judge carries a .291/.404/.674 slash over 213 trips to the plate. Among hitters with 200+ plate appearances, he ranks sixth in on-base percentage, second in homers and first in slugging.

New York is already without Harrison Bader due to injury. The Yankees’ outfield looks particularly rough with Judge joining him on the shelf. Left field has been a revolving door all season. New York ran an outfield trio of Jake Bauers, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Willie Calhoun this evening. Oswaldo Cabrera is on the MLB bench, while Franchy Cordero is on optional assignment and could be recalled to replace Judge on the roster.

Boone also told reporters that starter Nestor Cortes has been diagnosed with a strain in his throwing shoulder (via Jack Curry of the YES Network). Boone had already said Cortes was headed to the 15-day IL due to shoulder discomfort. That’ll be made official tomorrow with Randy Vásquez expected to be recalled to start in his place. The Yankees haven’t provided an indication of how long they expect Cortes to be sidelined.

Why there isn’t already padding is beyond me. Just like it takes fans getting seriously hurt by foul balls repeatedly for MLB to finally install netting.

I know this isn’t the trainers fault but it feels like the Yankees get hurt more than anyone. I would fire the whole medical team and trainers. I never seen a team get this hurt so much. Stanton Donaldson severino Rondon hicks judge a few years ago, bader, this is just a few names.

Love everyone saying made of glass blah blah blah. Dude is the best player in the world and went all out running full steam into a concrete wall. Made the catch and stayed in the game. You all would be ecstatic to have judge on your team for the offense the defense and the health. His injuries are flukes and the result of going all out all game every game.

Yes, every team would want Judge on there team.

No, Judge is not the best player in the game. He Finally had a Healthy great year, but almost everyone would take Ohtani over him. You know, that guy that could of easily won the MVP again last year. 😉

You know a lot of the HRs from judge were tested and they were balls from 2019 right? MLB needed that record to be broken.

That’s not exactly right, but it’s closer than some of the other conspiracy theories. None of Judge’s HR balls were tested, but a sample of balls from Yankee Stadium were. Some were found to be left overs from 2021.

Switch there uniforms last year and Ohtani is back to back MVP.
Keeping it real, Judge is the best power hitter today thou, but not even best hitter. I’d take many of players over him, with 2 out in the 9th, bases loaded, down a run, needing a single to win the game.

@Plugnplay-nah, definitely taking Judge, besides YOUR MVP can’t pitch in NY, so keep him in LA. Ohtani MVP? But he wasn’t. I was thinking YOUR other player named Trout (when healthy) is the best player in the game, right?

Ohtani, wasn’t he that guy who got shelled on the big stage…nah…. and was it Judge’s choice to get hit in the wrist with a 90 plus pitch.

100% most of his IL stints were from being the great player he is – broken wrist being hit by pitch, broken rib diving for a ball, running into a gate to catch a ball, he’s not made of glass like Stanton is

Then maybe the issue is that he needs to stop going all out when approaching the wall and other barriers. I’m sure Yankees fans would’ve preferred he let that ball drop for a double and not get hurt on the play.

Better judgment on avoiding injuries would make Judge better. Save a run then miss ten games makes Judge’s smarts come into judgement.

Fred Lynn (1975 MVP and Rookie of the Year) recently said his biggest regret was the amount of time he spent injured (because of being overly aggressive on defense).

Yanks should look into a deal for Max Kepler. Shouldnt require much to get him, he’d solidify OF defense, be a late inning defensive guy when AJ is back, and their offense could easily absorb Kepler’s weak bat.

This is the second time he has been out already and this young season due to some type of ailment. Unfortunately, when a team has so much money invested in a player, it’ll most insurers that sort of thing will happen and that he will play less often since they must protect their huge investment now. Vicious cycle .
