Mozeliak: Cardinals Are Not Trading Nolan Arenado

By Darragh McDonald | July 29, 2023 at 9:05pm CDT

The Cardinals are not trading  Nolan Arenado, with president of baseball operations John Mozeliak firmly stating that fact to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. There was a report earlier this week that the Dodgers had strong interest in the third baseman and were discussing a deal, but it seems those talks won’t lead to Arenado leaving St. Louis. “I have stated we are not trading him, have not asked him to waive his no-trade clause,” Mozeliak said. “So at this time, we are working on building for future success.”

Despite the reported talks with the Dodgers, there were inherent obstacles to getting a deal done. For one thing, Arenado and the Cardinals seem to have a good relationship, as he didn’t trigger his opt-out opportunity at the end of last year. Most observers agreed he could have beat the five years and $144MM remaining on the deal, but he chose to stay, seemingly happy to stick with the organization as opposed to maximizing his earnings.

Since he has a full no-trade clause, he would have to sign off on any deal, and it would be surprising for him to do so after just waiving that opt-out chance. The report on the talks with the Dodgers indicated he was willing to accept a deal only to the Dodgers, having always wanted to play for them as a Southern California native. But Arenado told reporters last night that he had not been approached about his clause.

Beyond the contractual complications, all indications have suggested the Cards are planning to sell some pieces but still try to contend again next year. Since Arenado is one of the better players in the game, it would be hard to imagine a scenario wherein they subtract him from the roster and make their 2024 team better. The Cards do have a surplus of position players and a dearth of pitching, so perhaps one could make the argument that even “losing” a trade that makes the pitching staff better would be a net victory, but the easier path is just to keep Arenado and find other ways of upgrading the pitching staff.

Although Arenado is apparently sticking around, it still seems like Mozeliak and his staff will be busy in the next few days. The Cardinals are currently 46-59 and 11 games out of a playoff spot. Mozeliak has already admitted that the club will have to do some selling, making moves that are more focused on upgrading the 2024 club. That will seemingly lead to trades of impending free agents like Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks between now and the August 1 deadline.

No. We don’t. We’re good knowing our team knows how to draft and develop prospects, sign intl players, find guys that other teams gave up on and make them serviceable or better, and pull of the occasional trade to improve the roster when/where needed. We have our clown fans, like any other fan base, but we’re hopeful… like any other fan base.

I’m a Giants fan to the nth degree. Since 60s. And I’m hoping they become what the Dodgers are. The model. And what that is was defined perfectly by Lost Realist. They clearly are the model every fan wants their team to follow. I think giants are getting there with Zaidi but it’s still a work in progress. But any one that dogs on the Dodgers is clearly one thing…..envious. I’m looking forward to future Giants Dodger battles which define the greatness of baseball

        @lost,
I do commend the Dodgers on their player development and scouting. I’ve made the argument the Yanks have a hard time recreating a core due to constant 25+ round draft picks. However, the Dodgers seem to find a way, hopefully we can poach some of those mid-tier scouts.

The delusions of dodger fans knows no bounds, but what do you expect from people who choose to live not only in California but the cesspool that is LA, the most narcissistic city in the history of the world. The propaganda headquarters is “Hollywood” and it clearly works on the locals.

The dodgers have spent hundreds of millions of dollars they don’t have, to buy good players reminiscent of the 90’s Yankees, only the Yankees actually had the money, the league didn’t have to step in and force their hand due to the outrageous debt/income ratio got under this new investment firm ownership group.

The dodgers got absolutely lucky with Clayton Kershaw, and even luckier he didn’t leave for greener pastures when he should’ve.

The dodgers absolutely bought that bubblechip that nobody considers a real championship, and have otherwise been the definition of choke artists for well over a decade.

Dodgers fans prove everyone here right about them. You expect to sign every free agent because you think it’s a privilege to live in that dung heap of a city. Dodger fans also believe they will get every major trade target they want, again because of their own belief in their superiority to everyone else.

The team has a storied history as one of the oldest and best teams in the league. And in the LA era they have a reputation for the worst fans in the league. You only show up to games or watch on tv when you’re winning, statistically amongst the worst “front runner” offenders. Not only that, but you can’t handle losing and fans gang up and beat on opposing fans. Brian Stowe is just one example…

In typical brainwashed sheep LA fashion, dodger fans will read this and say “you’re jealous”(misspelled because people in LA aren’t that smart).

Sigh, the dodgers only saving grace is they are on the shorter end of the greatest rivalry in baseball.

Not this one. I am as pleased about this announcement as apparently you are. I see Arenado’s contract as a liability moving forward.

Dodgers have an excellent clubhouse, great chemistry. It would probably require trading someone valuable from the starting lineup to get Arenado, not to mention saddling us with his contract. I’d much rather to take my chances on getting Ohtani next year. Would love to have Montgomery though…

Clueless LA Times writers wanted Arenado, not Friedman.

That contract is an extreme bargain compared to Machado, Bogaerts, Turner, and Seagar. The annual salary starts dropping after Arenado’s age 33 season. His salary at age 36 is $15 million. That’s the last year of the contract. He’s not getting paid into his 40s. Colorado is covering $5 million per year for years 2024 – 2026.

Arenado was probably not waiving his no-trade clause to go anywhere but LA and realistically the Dodgers can not afford to give up 4 pitchers to get him.

The Dodgers are stacked with pitching in the minors. They are on pace to potentially lose the most players ever in a Rule 5 draft, come December. They have more than enough prospect capital to pull off a trade like this.

Since Sheehan, Miller, Grove and Stone are already on the MLB team (or at least have been) and are holding the rotation together. Pepiot has been hurt all year and Nastrini has already been traded how close are the rest of that stacked pitching to MLB ready that the Cardinals would want to give away Arenado for them?

IMO, I think the Dodgers would be willing to trade 3 to 5 of these players, Gonsolin, Stone, Pepiot, Bruihl, Bruns, Taylor, Muncy, Pages, Ramos for Arenado, Flaherty or Montgomery, Hicks & one of either Edman or Carlson. Might even cost the Dodgers 6 players for 4 of the mentioned Cardinals.

        jasonthebuc;

The problem the Dodgers have had recently is that while they’ve been “stacked with pitching in the minors” for years now, they can’t seem to develop a starting pitching staff with most of those guys and keep them healthy.

Signing the mecurical Bauer (I’m taking about his pitching and attitude in the clubhouse) for all that money and years was the tipoff. This year has been no exception. Young pitchers from 3-4 years ago that one would think would be Dodger starting cornerstones for the next 5-10 years are pretty much all gone.

Tired reading about all the young, can’t-miss Dodges arms in the minors.

Cardinals GM comes out with this statement after the brilliant Friedman offers 1 top prospect, 1 mid tier prospect and chris Taylor only. We don’t need Nolan, he needs the dodgers and their GM knows it.

That pretty much seals the deal. They may make a move or for players to fill out the roster for 2024, but they arent going to be type of players will help them win, especially in ‘25, ‘26, ‘27. Probably some 35+ old pitchers who used to be decent number 3 starters. It’s going to be a tough for the next 4-5 years.

and when Arenado realizes he back to what it was like in Colorado and his buddy Goldschmidt is gone, he’s going to force his way out of St. Louis just like he did in Colorado. we’ll be forced to trade him for some teams Austin Gomber because Nolan will have all the control. It’s already happened once. I knew this year and next year where going to sub .500 records, but even i had hope starting in 2025 and really good in 2026 for another long run .

He no longer has the leverage of opt outs. That’s why Colorado traded him. They also agreed to send so much money because they were sure he would end the contract by opting out.

He can’t force his way out of town until his age 37 year.

If you look at the recent history of the Cardinals, they had 2 big era’s of winning….

o When Whitey Herzog was hired as GM/Manager 1980-81.

o When Tony La Russa was brought in as manager to work with GM Walt Jocketty in 1996 (they had worked together in Oakland). That run went on pretty much right through the Mike Schilt era as manager.

In both cases the Cardinals and been thrashing around for years and sort of bottomed out.

It will taking something like that to occur before the owner takes the major steps needed. The fact that the team has been in the playoffs the past 4 years and been eliminated early in the first round in last 3 and has now fallen apart in 2023 with no injury excuse (although losing Yadi had a lot to do with the freefall) is not a good sign.

Given that this “seller’s role” is an unfamiliar one for the Cardinals and Mozeliak, I’m starting to get a little nervous whether he’s overplaying his hand.

They’re in a strong position, able to combine both rentals and a surplus of well regarded OF prospects without the need to dump payroll.

    Don’t screw this up, Mo..

Cards should trade Goldie for young pitching. That would open up 1B for Walker who is miscast as an outfielder (Maybe miscast at 3B, too?).

The Marlins have a lot of SP prospects and could use an everyday 1B who is a lot better than Guriel or Cooper.
