The Reds announced that outfielder Henry Ramos has been designated for assignment, and that righty Tony Santillan has been optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Both moves clear space on the 26-man and 40-man rosters for right-hander Michael Mariot, as the Reds have selected Mariot’s contract from Triple-A.
Ramos spent seven weeks on the injured list due to a hip strain, and has hit .242/.356/.306 over 73 plate appearances for Cincinnati and a scorching .318/.404/.568 in 152 PA at the Triple-A level. The Reds’ increasingly crowded roster made it hard for Ramos to find consistent playing time, and so the team has opted to perhaps move on, or just to try and sneak Ramos through DFA waivers. The 31-year-old’s big Triple-A numbers might attract the attention of another team interested in a waiver claim, or Ramos could control his future more directly by rejecting an outright assignment if he did clear waivers. Because Ramos has been outrighted before in his career, he has the ability to turn down any future outright assignments and become a free agent.
Ramos was a fifth-round pick for the Red Sox back in the 2010 draft, and his long stay in the minors finally resulted in 18 MLB games with the Diamondbacks in 2021. Before signing a minor league deal with the Reds last winter, Ramos’ career includes stints with the Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants, Diamondbacks, and a brief stint in the KBO League in 2022.
Mariot knows a few things about the career of a journeyman player, as the 34-year-old is set to make his first appearance in the majors since 2016. The righty posted a 5.98 ERA over 49 2/3 innings with the Royals and Phillies from 2014-16, and subsequently bounced around the minors to several different organizations (including a previous stint with Cincinnati in 2021). This long path back to the Show also included stops in independent baseball, the Mexican League, and in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.
Beginning the season with the Cleburne Railroaders of the independent American Association of Professional Baseball, Mariot signed a minor league contract with the Reds last month and made a quick impression at Triple-A. Over four starts and 24 1/3 inning in Louisville, Mariot had a 2.59 ERA and a tiny 4.2% walk rate with only one home run allowed, though his 14.6% strikeout rate is far below average. It remains to be seen what Mariot’s role might be in Cincinnati, but with the Reds hurting for rotation depth, Mariot might get at least a spot start or perhaps some long relief work.

Omg another retread

It’s just a fresh arm. The way Krall is working the bullpen is awesome, using the system has been awesome.
This one belongs to the Reds
You are probably onw of the few that thinks so.
Besides, tge manager uses what bullpen he us given, which is why the only capable ones are overworked.
earmbrister
Yeah, count me as another big supporter of Krall and how he has overcome countless pitcher injuries. But keep banging your gripe drum: don’t let the bullpen’s and team’s success deter you.
This one belongs to the Reds
Pardon me if I don’t want this to end but unlike others who ignore history, I have seen this several times since 1990 ad nauseam so I know how this ends without any support from those who are supposed to be running things.
I actually know how baseball operations works and who should get the credit for this success instead of the wrong people the average fan seems to. It’s sad, really, especially when certain people think they know it all.
Meanwhile I give scouting, player development, and more importantly the players themselves and manager ALL the credit and I mean ALL for what they have done despite the lack of support.
dhud
Yeah, earmbrister!
We would all be so lucky to know baseball like this one belongs to the reds!
Get over yourself, dude
cincyrox
this is obviously a different time and a different GM who mades the trades that needed to be made with the current ownership … enjoy the run my fellow brother !

Thanks for everything you know

Seen what several times since 1990? There have been few teams if any with this young talent all at one time

All they can seem to do is get retreads.

Bringing up Mariot proves to me that the Reds are all in on big arms and small faces.

Dissapointing about Santillan. Evidently healthy, but not as effective as before.
This one belongs to the Reds
He was just activated and used each day. Brilliant.

I think it’s more in conjunction with Weaver being horrible and pulling him earlier due to the impact of this series. If Weaver makes it into the 4th with less than 4 runs, I’d be surprised. Mariot is there to come in in the second after Weaver sucks it up. He may be the worst pitcher in the bigs right now.
This one belongs to the Reds
Yet they still send him out there when they could get other options. You got it.
This one belongs to the Reds
Laughable for a team that claims to be in contention.
Bobcastelliniscat
Just a thought but maybe the Reds are claiming to be in contention because they are currently in first place and 9 games over .500?
This one belongs to the Reds
They play the Brewers nine times the next two weeks, their last games this year, and send Weaver and a dumpster diving TBD to start the next two games to overwork the overworked bullpen some more.
The front office is not acting like a team in contention. So instead of building on it, it very well could be a temporary condition, which makes it all the sadder for the Reds fans who were turning out to see them and support this great bunch of kids.
Both action and inaction both have long term consequences. Who knows if they will have this chance again anytime soon?
Bobcastelliniscat
How is the front suppose to act? How many major trades have been made by any teams so far this season? If Nick Krall doesn’t bring in a starter after the trade deadline you may have a point, until then you don’t.
This one belongs to the Reds
Cat, you know they missed the boat last offseason before this one even started.
Excuse then by everyone was they were not supposed to contend in a weakened Central. But they did based on the young players efforts themselves.
This front office has a history of excuses when it comes to adding experienced major league talent, especially pitching. You must be very optimistic to think they will go against history.
FromTheCheapSeats
Nobody, anywhere, could possibly have predicted all these kids would have performed as well as they have.
This team is at least a year ahead of anybody’s “best case” scenario. So, you can’t look back at this past offseason and say that they should have approached it as if they would be contending.
FromTheCheapSeats
You’re talking about the game that ended with the tying run at the plate, right?
Gtfoh
FromTheCheapSeats
We’ll said.

For sure Ramos won’t return, he’ll be either pick up by another organization or reject the outright.

For all you so called geniuses out there, if last night in a real playoff type atmosphere wasn’t an eye opener to you, no one can enlighten you.
dhud
Please, enlighten us how one game changes EVERYTHING
Since you are the one who, as you claim, “actually knows baseball operations”
This one belongs to the Reds
Try nine games in two weeks against your division rival and you ran out the only good starting pitcher you have in this series with them last night.
But keep drinking that kool aid.
This one belongs to the Reds
They won today DESPITE Weaver not because of him and you know it. If you don’t, I feel sorry for you. The bullpen was shaky at best. We saw it fade down the stretch last year due to overuse and history is starting to repeat itself. There is no way those type of comebacks can be maintained indefinitely especially as they face better competition out of the break. 21-5 is a month in a six month season.
You can say something relevant or be a troll. We have seen which way you go. But keep on with the one liners instead of expecting excellence. I’m sure the front office appreciates that.
When they sadly fade on the stretch run due to lack of front office action over the past offseason and when they needed it during this season, despite the great effort by this group of kids that got them where they are now, I wonder what excuse you all will give the boy GM then.
dhud
You claiming others to be trolls…that’s rich

The only thing I see that could “blow up” this Reds rebuild is if Castellini gets involved- just like last time. As long as Krall is in charge, all will be well. Krall’s only mistake I see was obtaining a good young left handed hitting catcher in the Rule 5 draft (Blake Sobol), and then trading him for Jake Wong. Sobol would fit with Ty Steve as L/R catching duo- even if they kept 1 of Maile or Casali.
This one belongs to the Reds
Agreed on the Castellinis. If you have seen him lately, Bob is a shell of his former self and Phil, not only is he not great at PR but I wouldn’t want him near the baseball side of it with a ten foot pole.
One positive thing about ownership though is their continued great support of the Reds Conmunity Fund even after our friend Joe Morgan passed away. That is a great thing for the future of baseball. Those kids are really treated well in those programs and many Reds players visit regularly.
Good point about Sobol, he looks to be a good prospect. Good young catchers are hard to come by.
I hope Casali stays around to coach after his playing career. He works great with the young pitchers. He really showed that with Karcher, getting him through that inning, giving the kid a nice memory.
