Reds Promote Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Place Kevin Newman On IL

By Mark Polishuk | July 17, 2023 at 1:01pm CDT

July 17: Cincinnati has formally announced the move; Encarnacion-Strand’s contract has been selected from Louisville, which fills the team’s 40-man roster. In a corresponding 26-man roster move, infielder Kevin Newman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to gastritis.

July 16: The Reds are calling up another of their top prospects, as FanSided’s Robert Murray (via Twitter) reports that Christian Encarnacion-Strand is on his way to the majors.  The club may have to make multiple corresponding moves before Monday’s game, as Encarnacion-Strand isn’t yet on the 40-man roster.

A fourth-round pick for the Twins in the 2021 draft, “CES” has done nothing but mash since beginning his pro career, as he has a whopping .322/.386/.604 slash line and 56 homers over 946 career plate appearances in the minors.  This includes hitting .331/.405/.637 with 20 home runs over 316 PA at Triple-A Louisville this year, leaving no doubt that the 23-year-old is ready for a bigger challenge.

It seems quite likely that the Reds would’ve called Encarnacion-Strand up earlier if it wasn’t for the fact that the team is already overloaded with quality prospects.  The additions of star rookies Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain have helped spark the Reds back into contention for the NL Central, while Spencer Steer (who made his MLB debut in 2022) has also been a huge contributor.

With the likes of Jake Fraley, Will Benson, and TJ Friedl also producing, the Reds find themselves with an interesting decision to make with Encarnacion-Strand’s position.  CES has played almost all of his career as a corner infielder, with only a pair of games in the corner outfield spots.  But, De La Cruz has been mostly playing third base since his promotion, and longtime star Joey Votto is still in the regular first base/DH mix since his return from the 60-day injured list.  It’s say to predict Encarnacion-Strand as the eventual successor to Votto, but the veteran has been on fire at the plate.

It’s the proverbial “good problem to have” for manager David Bell and Cincinnati’s front office, and it could be the issue may solve itself in the form of an injury or a slump.  Or, the Reds might simply rotate everyone through the lineup and make copious use of pinch-hitting opportunities or late-game substitutions in order to keep everyone (Votto in particular) fresh.  With the deadline approaching, it also isn’t out of the question that the Reds could create space by trading one of their young prospects in a headline deal for a controllable, frontline starting pitcher.  At the very least, it seems like Cincinnati will look to move veterans like Kevin Newman or Nick Senzel, whose playing time has been drastically reduced by the youth movement.

Encarnacion-Strand has made such a rapid rise up the minor league ladder that none of Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, MLB Pipeline, or The Athletic’s Keith Law had the infielder on their preseason top-100 lists.  He currently checks in 83rd on BA’s ranking and 88th on Pipeline’s ranking, with both outlets praising his natural power and his arm strength.  Questions about CES’ contact hitting seem to have been addressed in his Triple-A season, as his 10.4% walk rate is easily the highest of his three pro seasons, and he has also reduced his strikeout rate to 21.8%.  A slightly more patient version of Encarnacion-Strand is a scary concept for pitchers, given his power and ability to hit to the opposite field.

Cincinnati brought Encarnacion-Strand and Steer into the organization less than a year ago, acquired along with southpaw prospect Steve Hajjar in the trade that sent Tyler Mahle to the Twins at the deadline.  Since the Reds flipped Hajjar to the Guardians as the player to be named later to acquire Benson during the offseason, the Mahle trade has very quickly become one of the most productive swaps in recent team history.  For Minnesota, the trade is already infamous, as Mahle battled injuries and made only nine starts for the Twins before undergoing Tommy John surgery in May.

It’s funny how all these prospects are magically ready to play big league baseball come July.

    Funny strange. Not funny haha.

How about one of the writers does an article on this. I did one about the Cardinals a year ago. Then the Cardinals organization started changing and now both Walker and Gorman are projected to be super 2s.

    This isn’t a coincidence folks.

I would have to look into it to see when those guys got called up exactly.

Keep in mind they can still be sent back down if needed.

I am not saying it happens with every single prospect or young player. But there is a large correlation between the time when super 2 can be avoided and when teams call up prospects.

So a small market team like the Reds are supposed to say, “Oh well, I’ll call this player up two weeks earlier, and cost our team millions and a year of control — for a player that we will never have the resources to re-sign once they reach free agency — because, Darn It, it’s the right thing to do.”

Senseless has a 690 OPS and the DH according to baseball reference is the second catcher.

He really didn’t have anywhere to play?

And if that was the case what changed?

DH has been rotated around 5-6 people to give days off in the field

If you’re referencing a third party website to try to tell us who the reds DH is, you have not followed or know anything about the team. So you really shouldn’t be trying to talk about it

July is actually late. Super two date will be some time in June. If it was just service time they could have called him up mid April.

That’s why most people either mute me or don’t even try to engage me in conversation. Appreciate and respect that you aren’t scared.

IMO, GMs promote players way too early. In CES’ case, he had a 38/6 K/W in AA last year. He needed at least a half-year in AAA. I remember when Adell got promoted, he wasn’t even close to hitting AAA pitching.

Sometimes, with guys like Chavis & Dalbec, they kind of age out of AAA and you have to give them a shot. But way too many GMs are wasting 1-2 years of service time letting guys learn to hit in the pros instead of AAA.

A guy like Witt has a cumulative bWAR of 2.6 and he’ll have wasted two years of service time on a last place team.

Hunter Greene was NOT on opening day roster in 2022 – He pitched 125 innings that season – that completed his rookie status.

2023 – made opening day as a year 2 player.

Datashark, you need to check your data. Greene WAS on the opening day roster as a rookie in 2022 and started the fourth game of the season. He only pitched 125 innings because he got hurt and missed a month and a half starting early in August.

I believe last year was the first year for rule change rewarding draft picks for certain achievements by rookie players to try and deter service time manipulation, the Mariners got an extra 1st round pick for Rodriguez winning Roy, so I think it’s more likely coincidence than service time manipulation, and the call up is partly because the reds rebuild is moving quicker than expected and they’re contending for the playoffs this year rather than the lottery, more incentive to bring up a top prospect who’s position is blocked and won’t get full time spot, don’t think they would do that during a lost season without guaranteed playing time

Some of these teams are w calling ip players strategically and not so for service time. O’s for example are giving Grayson a shot at getting a few starts in before the deadline. His performance is gonna help measure their need for pitching.

In the Reds case, this is a little tricky calling CES up. He is definitely deserving and doesn’t have much left to prove at Triple A. But it also is not gonna benefit them or him calling him up if he can’t get in the lineup regularly. I’m thinking they re lining themselves up to make a big move here at the deadline.

Cards, if you knew anything, you’d know Reds don’t play service time games. Check India, Greene, Lodolo, & Steer who were not manipulated to start the season for the extra year of control. And then check De La Cruz who was called up just prior to Super 2 cut off this year and will be Super 2 after next season. If Reds would have manipulated ANYONE of those, EDLC would have been the one. But that’s 5 examples for you to chew on.

No one holds back a prospect until July for service time.

I remember the writers accusing the RS of holding back Pivetta and Houck for service time reasons. Pivetta couldn’t pitch at all, and i am not sure if Houck is ready even now.

Just for fun, I am copy an abridged article from Ronald Blum from 10/31/22. These are the major Super-2’s:

“Thairo Estrada, Karinchak Randy Arozarena, Nathanial Lowe, Brusdar Graterol, Tony Gonsolin, Taylor Ward, Patrick Sandoval’ Brady Singer,Kris Bubic,Santiago Espinal and Edmundo Sosa.”

That’s not a who’s who of minor league prospects. I seriously doubt even a single one of them was held back because the team wanted an extra year of control.

I think it kind of has to be India, right? Moved Elly to 2B?

I mean the rest of their hitters are significantly better hitters than league average by wRC+. The only ones that aren’t are India and their catchers. They actually already sent down Fairchild, whose 98 wRC+ would normally be great for a CF, but they wanted to make room for Steer/Fraley/Benson/Friedl

I think realistically you can move India to a 10th man role where he comes in and gives people days off. You can have him still play 3/4 times a week that way.

Yes HAL2000 tells you someone who has never played in the big leagues before is worth 3 of a guy having a Cy Young caliber season. St Louis fans just had this same annoying argument about how HAL2000 overvalues their prospects in the Gilbert article. If you want pitching it costs or you can develop your own, like you did with Greene and Lodolo. If you want to make the playoffs THIS year you are not waiting on them until August, you are trading for players because you have no mote replacements on the farm. Guess what? Most teams are still within sniffing distance of the playoffs so the prices, even for rentals like Erod and Lorenzen are going to be high. Don’t want to pay, watch teams like Texas and the Dodgers do just that and you’ll be left with nothing. All because you listened to HAL2000 😉

It doesn’t matter you’re not getting one of the Reds top 15 prospects for either of those 2 rental pitchers. They aren’t worth any of that they can keep them and lose them for nothing at that price.

If the Reds are unwilling to trade any of their top 15 prospects, then they will not get anything to help their lousy pitching staff and likely be 6 games out of the race in September. That’s fine, it’s a young team. There’s always next year right? Or maybe the year after that. Or the next one.

I am tired of cheaters and people who bend the rules until they are almost broken. Big pharma sells heroin legally they call it oxycontin. Amazon and other big corporations cheat and don’t pay taxes. And of course in baseball we have teams stealing signs or simply having payrolls that are double and triple what other years have.

Just tired of it. Tired of cheaters. Baseball and sports in general are supposed to be fair competition. Instead it’s just a bunch of rule breakers and cheaters.

The Reds didn’t in this case just like with others (Greene, India, EDLC, McLain).

Again I did a very in depth piece about this for the Cardinals. People kept telling me I was being crazy and the team doesn’t do this and I laid it out player by player.

        They do.

Now does it happen with every single player? No but they do it.

The Cardinals haven’t had a super 2 since I don’t even know when. The only guy in the last 10 or 15 years to qualify would have been DeJong and he got an extension so it didn’t matter.

When was the last time the Reds had a super 2? I don’t know the Reds system well enough to say. If you do feel free to share. If I am wrong I will say so.

India, Greene, Lodolo all started the season on the roster the last 2 years. Stephenson and Barrero were brought up during COVID year before they would have. You’d have to go back to Senzel to find someone debatably held down and he’s been pretty terrible

Ok after doing a rather quick search it does appear the Reds don’t blatantly manipulate service time like most teams do. So good for them

Senzel is a unique case. They really didn’t have anywhere to play him. If Senzel could have played 3b when he first came up his career could have been entirely different.

I gotta say I don’t think the Reds are service time manipulators. Maybe this one actually is a coincidence.

If front office wants CES to play they will need to move someone off major league roster to give him playing time. I don’t see David Bell playing him against RH pitching over the current group of Votto, India, McClain, EDLC, Benson, Steer, Fraley and Friedl. I would be fine with India being rested for CES but I don’t think Bell will do that..

I think Benson is the odd man out for regular PT and Steer becomes the pretty much regular LF. CES and Votto will probably swap 1B and DH duties.

Stinks for him but I don’t see how else it goes with the current roster. Newman pretty much is done getting any PT there and Barrero or him probably on the DFA train.

India is the heart and soul of that young team. I don’t see that. It would destroy team chemistry. But the front office has done stupid things in the past so nothing would surprise me.

If so, probably more like McLain at 2nd, EDLC at short, CES at 1st, and Steer returns to 3rd. They have had that 2B/SS alignment when India was DH already.

I think Benson is going to play vs RHP, guy has raked ever since he was called back up. He was one of the few who had good at bats vs Brewers. India is the guy who should play less against RHP. He is really struggling at the plate and he is a negative player in field. Dropping India down to fifth last week I think was also a sign he is the guy to lose PT. Encarnacion-Strand is going to hit somewhere between 5th through 7th in order. Benson has done very well in the 9 hole.

That is July’s numbers. He was white hot in June.

He’s going to lose some AB’s as the DH. CES is likely the DH and 1B when Votto sits. Casali is probably DFA’d. Steer to a platoon role when Votto sits.

I said pitching help in the post which doesn’t limit it to Erod and Lorenzen. Last I heard Cincy needed bullpen help as well and the Tigers have controllable BP arms in addition to young MLB or AAA starters. There are any number of permutations that could come into play there which potentially could include Erod or Lorenzen too. IF Ci cy wants pitching they will have to shell out for it just like other teams. The cost for pitching is going to be high at the deadline. Sellers market thus year. Don’t overestimate the value of prospects dude, they invariably let you down. India could well get shipped out too; SF checked in in him last year and you have a logjam of IF’ers in Cincy. They’re going to trade someone.

Not for mediocre rental pitching. For Lorenzen or ERod the Tigers can have a lightly used Newman and a non top 30 prospect. If the Reds are paying more than that it’s not worth it. The Reds are a year ahead of the process and have more young pitchers coming so they don’t need to grossly overpay by giving up a CES or India for mediocre rentals.

Erod is a mediocre rental? You obviously haven’t watched much baseball this year dude. He has pitched lights out. Better than Mahle did when you guys got CES and more for him. Plus like I said, I was talking about “pitching” which includes but is not limited to Erod. Good luck getting a decent pitcher for Newman and a non top 30 prospect!

The point is the Reds don’t need to make a trade. They are way ahead of schedule. They do have to get rid of players but your looking at Newman, Senzel and Casali. No point in trading India or CES unless your getting something better than rentals.
