Rockies Place Kris Bryant On Injured List With Finger Fracture

By Anthony Franco | July 25, 2023 at 7:07pm CDT

The Rockies placed Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 22, because of a fractured left index finger. Colorado also optioned Karl Kauffmann to Triple-A Albuquerque and recalled Elehuris Montero and Riley Pint.

Bryant’s frustrating second season in Colorado continues. He lost a month earlier in the year to a bruised left heel, the same foot that ended his 2022 campaign just after the All-Star Break because of plantar fasciitis. The latest injury was more of a fluke occurrence. Bryant was hit on the hand by a Braxton Garrett pitch last Friday. He’ll apparently need at least another week to recover.

The former MVP is hitting .251/.338/.379 with eight homers through 275 plate appearances. He owns a .273/.353/.417 line since signing with Colorado on a seven-year free agent deal. The Rox will obviously hope he can finish the season healthy to build some momentum going into 2024.

While there’s no question Bryant will be on the roster past the August 1 deadline, first baseman C.J. Cron is a potential trade candidate. An impending free agent, Cron started slowly but has raked at a .317/.349/.600 clip in 17 games since returning from an injured list stint last month. Back troubles had kept him on the shelf for six weeks. He’s again dealing with some stiffness in his lower back, he told Thomas Harding of MLB.com (Twitter link). He’s expected to miss the next couple games but hopes to return to the lineup on Friday. An injured list stint might ensure he stays in Colorado, but it seems he’ll avoid the IL for now.

Hoyer’s gotta be so glad they didn’t resign him. Prime example of a Scott Boras inspired, massive overpay.

“Don’t know his name”…and his teammates probably don’t even know his face, since he’s always rehabbing from his latest injury and almost never on the field.

I’m not a fan of Jed Hoyer. But I do commend him for holding his ground on players like Bryant and Baez. Best that these players moved on to other teams.

He also guessed right about Wilson, and Schwarbs (take away the dingers) and he is a .180 hitter who strikes out way too much. I will say that I would’ve liked to have seen #44 retire as a Cub but Jed was right about the others.

Rizzo is missed. But I can understand where Jed Hoyer was at with the Rizzo decision. Rizzo was offered 4 years/60 million. Rizzo wanted 80 million. Jed Hoyer had concerns about Rizzo’s back ailments.

What a hoot, last I heard of Bryant was in Chicago. He has that Mark Prior feel about him. He’s made his dough, and Colorado is a mighty fine place to retire to.

KB had 3 really good years, Prior only had the 1, but they did both peak early, so I can see the comp. Bryant was a really good player until the injuries started to diminish his game.

Braxton Garrett should be immediately suspended for injuring a batter with a pitch.
He should remain suspended for the length of time that Bryant is unable to perform up to his level of performance prior to injury.
Further, the Marlins should reimburse the Rockies for Bryant’s salary for the length of time that Bryant is out.
This outmoded, antiquated, “OOPS ! S-O-R-R-Y, Well, it’s just part of the Game” is BS !!
Currently, one team loses the services of a player due to injury. The other team NOTHING!
Well past the time for MLB to step in and eliminate this injustice.
And take definitive action to reduce HBP and further protect batters.

They should make a rule against hitting any batter. That will prevent it from happening anymore.

The silver lining of the comments here is that we’re almost 30 comments in without one single Bryant apologist making excuses for his fragility. It’s very encouraging to see almost everyone has taken off the rose colored glasses where KB is concerned.

Not an apologist, as a Cub fan really thought he was going to be a generational player; first player to earn college player of year, MiLb poy, ROY, MVP in consecutive years and now he is just another average or worse player. Great call by cubs to move on from entire core.

Contract smoosher. Another Jacoby, Strasberg, Wright. Putting injury as excuse. Bet if they didn’t have those guaranteed contracts they would get out of injury a lot faster. Players should get base salary plus incentive bonuses. Avoid these ridiculous contracts. You play you get payed.

If anyone can make Anthony Tendon’s contract look like a deal, it’s gotta be Kris Bryant. It’s like he needs to be wrapped in bubble wrap at this point.

I thought Bryant was in witness protection; who knew he was still playing, because you rarely ever see him on the field. I’d be surprised if he is recognized by teammates or by stadium security.
