The 2022 Tigers were baseball’s worst offensive team, as the lineup’s near-total lack of production was the chief cause (even beyond a staggering number of pitcher injuries) for a hugely disappointing 66-96 record in what was supposed to be a return to contention. “Best batter on the 2022 Tigers” is pretty faint praise, and Kerry Carpenter’s 113 plate appearances last season didn’t even make him a qualified hitter, yet Carpenter still took the dubious honor by posting a team-leading 124 wRC+ over his 31 games of work in his rookie season.
While Carpenter hadn’t really been on Detroit’s radar last year amidst the bigger-name veterans or more highly-touted prospects on the roster, a club so suddenly desperate for hitting could hardly afford to look past a promising bat. This earned him a larger share of playing time heading into 2023, though Carpenter had a modest .217/.280/.464 slash line over his first 75 PA this season. He was then dealt another setback when he sprained his right shoulder at the end of April, resulting in about six weeks on the injured list.
Upon returning from the IL, however, Carpenter has not just been the Tigers’ best batter, but also quietly one of the most productive bats in baseball. Since Carpenter was activated on June 9, only nine qualified hitters have topped his 159 wRC+, as he has slashed .317/.380/.575 over 245 PA. He joined the 20-homer club this past Wednesday, with a grand slam that represented all of Detroit’s offense in a 6-4 loss to the Cubs.
These types of numbers are impressive for anyone, but especially for a 19th-round draft pick from the 2019 draft. Carpenter hit well in his first pro season, but likely due to the canceled 2020 minor league campaign, he took a bit of a step back in 2021 with a .752 OPS over 461 PA for Double-A Erie. Carpenter returned to Erie to begin the 2022 season, but he started to tear up pitching at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels, finishing 2022 with a .313/.380/.645 line and 30 homers over an even 400 PA for the two affiliates.
In this sense, Carpenter didn’t exactly come out of nowhere, though few would’ve predicted that he would’ve kept swinging a hot bat in the majors. And, it is worth noting that Carpenter has still totaled only 433 PA in the big leagues — too small a sample size to clearly state that he is truly for real. Carpenter’s walk and strikeout rates are also a bit below the league average, and he has some significant splits, as his left-handed swing is lot more productive against right-handed pitching (.938 OPS) than against southpaws (.724 OPS). Carpenter has also benefited from a .328 BABIP this season, and his .382 wOBA is well above his .362 xwOBA.
That said, a .362 xwOBA ranks in the 87th percentile of all batters, so Carpenter’s production would be very notable if he was “only” delivering at that expected level. His contact and barrel rates are both well north of average, so it isn’t like he is getting lucky on soft contact. And, while we’re still operating within a small overall sample size of career at-bats, Carpenter is doing much better against left-handed pitching in 2023 than he did in 2022.
On the defensive side, Carpenter has made some positive strides as a corner outfielder, spending most of his time in right field this year. A Gold Glove isn’t necessarily in Carpenter’s future, but public metrics have rated his right field work as just a touch below average. The UZR/150 and Defensive Runs Saved metrics have been more impressed by his 72 1/3 innings in left field, though Carpenter’s solid throwing arm probably makes him a better fit in right field. While more DH at-bats will be available in Detroit once Miguel Cabrera retires, Carpenter certainly looks like at least a passable corner outfielder, which gives the Tigers more flexibility in how they’ll manage their roster going forward.
Detroit’s 2023 offense is still near the bottom of the league, but there have at least been some signs of life with Carpenter’s production, and solid showings from former top draft picks Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson. Blue-chip star prospects like Greene and Torkelson have been the faces of the Tigers’ lineup of the future, but striking paydirt on a less-regarded player or two has always been a key element of any successful rebuild. It looks like the Tigers might have found at least an MLB regular with their 19th-round selection, and Carpenter’s elite production over the last few months might also hint at a higher ceiling.

Brennan Bosch 2.0
Buff Barnacles
Not bad! I was gonna go with Bobby Higginson
Devil's advocate
Bobby was actually a pretty good player for a fairly long time

Harsh……Boesch never hit this many homers & struck out a lot more!

That’s the effin spirit, Mr. Glass Half Empty.

Hank Greenberg 2.0…happy?
Assdribble_Cabrera
No. By suggesting Brennan Bosch 2.0, you give him zero chance of success. Your negativity must be fun to be around.

I am actually 🙂 which one of us is taking a chat room on a baseball website too seriosusly?

Also, Bosch made 3 million playing baseball. I’d say he was pretty successful.

They have another 19th-round pick that is very promising in Justine Biggie!

He’s been good over two seasons. Carpenter is a keeper and will start and bat in the middle of the order moving forward. Him and Malloyvwill likely split RF and DH next year. Exciting times with young players like them and P. Meadows and Keith developing.
BSHH
While I fully agree otherwise, I don’t think Malloy will be a RF often. He (was) moved from 3B to LF at AAA, and I don’t expect him to take on any more defensive responsibilities. But by adding Greene, P. Meadows and Baddoo, the Tigers OF seems set to me.

Baddoo/Vierling seems to be what they were running with. Baddoo needs to show more and Meadows is by no means a sure thing. I don’t see how they keep Malloy off the roster next year with a .400 OPS and all those extra base hits.

I don’t think you can rave enough about what he”s doing, and his rather unique batting stance. But wow, what a week its been in Detroit with the call up of Parker Meadows. WOW ! That kid is excitement, with the calmest demeanor I’ve ever seen in a player.
Bringing that guy up has really lit up the team. Good grief Parker has some real power, and his speed is not a joke. Add that with his fielding skill hes displayed so far, it can only help the Tigers so much going forward. He also takes the pressure off the other guys as well.
Parker, Kerry, Tork, and Riley look like they are going to be a real solid core going forward in Detroit. The pitching ? That is a whole different story. Mize is coming back, and we’ve hardly seen him in Detroit. They only have him for three more years too. He’s like a lot of their pitchers whose clocks started, then needed to get repaired.
Still having one equation on the team it’s hitting get more solved with each new addition is very promising going forward. .Parker is just awesome, what a first week he’s had, and he has to be in the running for player of the week this week as well.
Melchez17
Skubal, Mize and Rogers are free agents in 3 years. The window is open now, but will close quickly.
stymeedone
While Avila was abysmal at signing FA’s, his talent evaluation was pretty damn good. Considering how Barren the system was when DD was let go, and to now have Torkelson, Greene, Meadows, Carpenter, Rogers, Baddoo, Short, Manning, Skubal, Faedo, Olsen, Brieske, Lange, Foley, Mize, White all filling roster spots is not too shabby. Plus there is considerable talent still on the rise in Keith, Dingler, Pacheco, Kreidler, Bigbie, Jung, Madden, Flores, and Jobe, which could arrive shortly.
MPrck
Yes I agree they’ll be using A.A.’s farm system for a long while which explains this last draft in better light. Adding high school guys says our farm is pretty good. The Tigers have had bad luck with the pitching injuries, and they’ll be healthy when looking for the big paydays. Three seasons with the guys they have now should be enough to win something if only the Division.
wileycoyote56
Not sure how his FA evaluation was, I’m guessing he got what Chris Illitch would spend for, doubt they ever opened up the vault for him like they did DD! MR I would have been happy to bring on people who could have made this team better, he wasn’t cheap

When Mike ran the team, money was not an isssue. His son seems to be more frugal…..top money is not always the signing issue, most player will go to a contender few less $$$$
Rsox
When Mike ran the Detroit Red Wings they were perennial Stanley Cup contenders that only missed the playoffs twice under Mike’s ownership, they have yet to reach the playoffs under Chris (7 seasons and counting)
Airo13
Money was an issue for Mike Early on. He refused to put money into the team for awhile, until they showed something. Chris did agree to put money into the team a couple years ago after the tigers started looking ok. The money spent cleary wasnt in the right places.

Detroit is building up some tradable pieces going forward that should help get some arms into the lower system. Detroit is going to lose some pitching just because they have Boras as the agent. They need to build up having a steady supply of arms coming up in the next few years to keep up with it’s young hitters.
They’ve given a whole lot of players some fantastic exposure this year in the big league. That they’ve never really had before, and for the most part have been pretty impressive enough to attract attention around the league. Making moves should be a whole lot easier going forward as well.
Third base has been a little iffy lately, but they have no shortage of candidates there either. They look like they’ll be able to compete for first from now on at the get go. This will be must see T.V today, the return of J.V again with a new team as they beat him earlier with has previous new team the Mets. How will Parker and Kerry with his on base streak do ? This will be a fun match up today. So many stories, PLAY BALL !
Melchez17
Verlander is pitching today… it will be fun to watch for the first 3 innings. Tigers will be down 8 to 0 by then.
MPrck
Detroit has their longest pitching piece today in Faedo starting, and he’s been pretty good for his experience level. He’s here for another 5 seasons so that makes him a very valued pitcher getting a great chance today against J.V’s Astros. It’s going to be a great game today.
Melchez17
After the 2021 season, I felt Carpenter belonged in the Tiger top 30 prospect list. He showed some power and hitting ability. He deserved to be included especially when they continued to list Franklin Perez as a top prospect.
Tiger fan web site said that Carpenter had too much swing and miss and no speed or defense. This list also included guys like Bryant Packard and Daniel Cabrera… I mean, give me a break.
The next year Carpenter broke out and still wasn’t on the top 30 prospect list. I complained but was always told “small sample size”.
He had a solid rookie year and still I was told he was a platoon player that was just having a good start.
Now they have finally come to believe he’s a solid player.
Some times you can see a guy that has potential just by how he handles things at the plate. Carpenter wasn’t just sitting on the fastball… he was hitting all different types of pitches to all parts of the park and with power. Once he figured out which pitch to expect in certain situations, he’s gotten better. He learned a lot in the minors and was able to learn more in the majors.
Melchez17
Imagine if this Tiger team had a decent 3B… a solid 2B and maybe an outfield bat. They started the season with no one at 3B. They had Schoop who everyone knew was done. And the worst offense in the league could have used a solid OFer instead of watching backup infielders play out there every day. They are only 7 games back. Having some offense from those 3 spots would have been worth more than 7 wins.
2024 looks much brighter.
Perez at 2B? Keith at 3B? Outfield of Carpenter, Greene, Parker and Vierling? Baddoo on the bench? They could use a couple free agent starting pitchers and they could own the AL Central again for a very long time.
I hope Harris sees what he has.
Edp007
As I’ve said many times here .. MLB overall is much better when the tigers are relevant.
Melchez17
I think you can expand that a little to include all AL Central teams… From ’84 to ’97 6 times the AL Central had someone in the World Series… 4 winners. Then the middle 2000’s to 2016 with the White Sox, Tigers, Royals and Indians all in the World Series (6 times from 2005 to 2016).
LABeachguy
There was no AL Central in 1984.

Look up in the sky ! Is it a bird, or a plane ? No It’s Detroit’s new center fielder Parker Meadows whose able to leap tall walls, and retrieve balls going for home runs. Cruz in Cinci got a lot of press, but this Parker is pretty darn fast himself.
Today’s line up looks pretty good today. Ibanez at second gets to lead off, today instead of Baddoo, as they’ve put Riley in left and have Kerry back in right. With Miggy batting fifth, and Meadows sixth it should have some nice scoring chances today. Mckinstry at third should help there today He bats 8th with Baez in front, and Rodgers in back. This is a great line up against Justin today.
I hope Miggy passes Beltre no problem quickly so he can have a shot at C.R. jr. Can he pass Ripken ? 33 games left to get 35 hits, wow, it’s going to go down to the wire.

Carpenter dealt with injury mid-season but he shouldn’t received a lot more hype earlier. Wish I wasn’t competing heavily in my home league that I could’ve snatched him up earlier when he was injured. Well I’m just glad someone in Detroit can hit home runs.
Melchez17
Verlander hit 3 Tigers today. Look for someone to charge the mound. Astros only up 7 to 0. Tigers did better than I expected.
Rsox
Carpenter and Torkelson have been nice surprises this season for the Tigers but they need a bat to shore up 3B, a Second Baseman and see if anyone will take Baez off their hands, even if it’s for nothing more than magic beans
bobsugar84
I had him ranked as the 11th best prospect to begin the year, in terms of MLB production for just this season. This is what I wrote about him back in March…
No one’s paying attention to Carpenter because he’s on the offensively-challenged Tigers. Also, by the time he was called up, Detroit was an afterthought. A 19th-round pick in 2019, Carpenter burst onto the scene last year with 36 combined home runs (six at the Major League level). With the shift no longer in play and Comerica Park’s fences moved in, expect the left-handed hitting Carpenter to build on last year’s numbers. (.252/.310/.485 in 114 PA).
Unlike a lot of the prospects going before him in drafts, Carpenter’s pretty much assured a roster spot. He’ll likely be hitting somewhere near the middle of the order from day one and could be a solid four-category contributor. He could easily outperform Josh Jung and Triston Casas but is going 80-100 picks later.
– the injury obviously limited his production, but his swing is gorgeous and it was only a matter of time. Carp is the real deal.

Melchez17
Playing Ibanez, McKinstry, Maton, Schoop, Short, Kriedler, Nevin is what hurt this Tiger team. Not having a major league 3B or 2B is what killed this teams chances at a division.
Going with Marisnick instead of Arron Hicks…
Dumping Candelario when you have no one to replace him…
Signing Boyd and expecting him to pitch 100 innings…
Dumping Shreve for nothing and then trusting Vasquez?
Not dealing ERod and Cisnero when they had the chance.
Harris has been a dumpster fire since coming to Detroit. Hopefully some of these Avila players will step up and make him look like he knows what he’s doing.
Taking Max Clark over Wyatt Langford? Good God!!! Was he trying to be worse than Avila taking Jobe over Mayer?

All these guys play in the Arizona Fall League, Riley Greene and Torkelson are good, Parker Meadows is good, Colt Keith is good, must be nice, White Sox are the most unlikable team in sports
But I Do
So how much is this guy’s agent kicking MLBTR for this article? Because front offices read this, and a rumors website pumping the guy up when there are no actual rumors surrounding him regarding a trade, free agency, or an extension just reeks of a payout. MLBTR is again trying to be Fangraphs with these long-form pieces that have nothing to do with transactions, attempting some statistical analysis. But they’re not. All these pieces do is just regurgitate publically available numbers on Baseball-Reference and maybe Statcast. It results in a piece that is not at all hard-hitting or comprehensive. A deep dive this is not; more just wading in the shallow end.
Stay in your lane, MLBTR. Leave the stat dives to people who are good at it. Stick to transaction pieces, which you’re good at. And stop taking payola from agents.
Notice how I started that last sentence? “And” never needs a comma after it. These examples is unnecessary punctuation that just looks bad in addition to being wrong:
“And, it is worth noting that Carpenter…”
“And, while we’re still operating within a small overall sample…”
Both work fine without commas:
“And it is worth noting that Carpenter…”
“And while we’re still operating within a small overall sample…”
