Latest On Yankees’ Deadline Approach

By Nick Deeds | August 1, 2023 at 1:32pm CDT

With the Yankees in last place in the AL East despite a decent 55-51 record, their path forward remains somewhat murky with less than four hours to go before the trade deadline. Joel Sherman of the New York Post indicates that the club could look to both buy and sell, searching for long-term controllable pieces in areas of need while fielding offers on the pending free agents on their roster.

Several of the club’s pending free agents, including Luis Severino and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, have had difficult seasons in 2023, but could nonetheless draw interest as low-cost, depth additions from other clubs. Lefty Wandy Peralta, who has a 2.29 ERA in 47 appearances out of New York’s bullpen this year, and center fielder Harrison Bader have both fared better in their walk years, with Bader in particular drawing interest per the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. Sherman more specifically notes that the Yankees and Phillies have discussed Bader, though there is “limited traction” on a deal between the sides.

Sherman adds that the Yankees have discussed closer Clay Holmes in trade talks, despite Holmes being controllable through the 2024 campaign. That being said, Sherman noted that the asking price for Holmes is exorbitant, rendering a deal regarding the club’s closer unlikely. The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty adds to that doubt, noting that it’s “highly unlikely” the club parts with either Holmes or fellow leverage reliever Michael King.

As far as buying goes, the club has been frequently connected to Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson in the days and weeks leading up to the deadline, and those connections haven’t stopped today. Kuty, Sherman, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand have are among those who have linked the Yankees and Carlson recently. That being said, Heyman cautions that the Cardinals are unlikely to deal Carlson unless they get a young MLB starter in return. That’s a price the Yankees could pay if they so chose, with youngsters Clarke Schmidt and Jhony Brito currently occupying spots in the club’s starting rotation.

As Feinsand notes, that Carlson’s ability to play quality defense in center field could be of particular value given Bader’s status as a pending free agent. Carlson could take over for Bader in center immediately in the event of a trade before the deadline, or play left field for the remainder of the 2023 campaign and shift over to center in the event Bader departs via free agency this offseason.

In case you missed it, MLB rule 6.03 section (a) strictly prohibits anyone from playing centerfield for the NYY unless they have previously played said position for the St. Louis Cardinals. Welcome aboard Dylan! Ahahaha!

Typical NYY. Overvalue prospects but never play them and have them fizzle out. Reason why NYY has gotten the lowest WAR out of their prospects since 2000, and that includes Judges WAR

The Yankees have done some stupid things regarding prospects, I agree. Frazier is a different story though. Beyond just being immature, he had concussion issues that he kept hidden from the team and just didn’t play well. He didn’t deserve a callup. I think his play since leaving NY proves it.

Being immature doesn’t keep him from getting called up. Being immature keeps him from letting the team know what’s going on with his health and the team dumping him because they didn’t know he needed help with his concussion.
Any left field issues are unrelated to Jackson Frazier.

They should be listening on nearly everyone right now with the emphasis on dumping bad salaries with prospects attached……while also trying to acquire young, controllable, preferably lefty hitting bats.

If you look at the free agent list for next year, there are several impact arms, but few bats to make a difference. Trade from strength right now and help fix this atrocious offense.

If they CAN clear some roster spots, let see what kids like Chapparo, Peraza, Wells & Pereira can do playing a LOT for the rest of the year.

Do nothing for 5 years and get out from under the stupid contracts. Be the Angels with a great player but nothing to show for it. The team was built poorly. We are about to see the 80’s Yankees again.

I don’t even blame Cash. Stanton, Rizzo, and DJ have sucked and who saw that coming?

    Reply

Completely correct. Stanton was acquired after an MVP season, DJ signed a new deal after leading the league in hitting, and Rizzo had over 30 dingers last year. The player acquisition part makes sense on all three. All three being awful is on them.

The Yankees have missed on every single player that has been made available on the block this season. They were in on a few of the pitchers and failed to move on anything. At this rate with how poorly they have played, they should honestly just “retool” by trading some of their folks on expiring contracts for whatever they can get.

I love Bader and would like to see him remain a Yankee, but if trading him helps the future, get it done. Then try to bring him back in FA.

Yankees should be in full sell mode like the Mets but incompetent Cashman can’t even figure that out despite being in last place in the division and being the architect of this current train wreck of a roster who can’t even produce on the field (when healthy lol).

Nothing to worry about though, the most overrated GM in baseball had his contract extended by the clown owner (who refuses to fire him despite being the catalyst for this dumpster fire team) and will be back next year.

Also, I still can’t believe Cashman used the hitting coach as a scapegoat and fired Dillon Lawson when in reality Cashman should have been fired.
