Andrew Friedman On Roberts, Kershaw, Offseason Plans

By Leo Morgenstern | October 17, 2023 at 5:55pm CDT

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman met with the media (including Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times) on Tuesday afternoon, alongside GM Brandon Gomes. The two executives discussed the disappointing conclusion to another Dodgers season, potential changes to the major league coaching staff, and the team’s offseason plans.

Speaking on his ballclub’s unceremonious exit from the playoffs, Friedman could not deny that the words “organizational failure” ring true once again (he used the same phrase last season). Putting it bluntly, he said, “Our goal was to win 11 games in October, and we didn’t win one.” Indeed, Diamondbacks hitters trounced the Dodgers pitching staff in Game 1 of the NLDS, and L.A.’s own powerful offense rarely came through. Notably, Friedman also used the term “organizational failure” to avoid blaming any specific people or groups of people for his team’s poor performance. “Organizational failure means it’s on all of us,” he explained.

On that note, Friedman left no doubt that manager Dave Roberts and his entire coaching staff would be back in 2024, confirming that there won’t be any changes in the clubhouse. “I think [Dave Roberts] and our coaching staff did an incredible job this year,” he said, “And none of us did an incredible job in those three games versus Arizona.”

Unsurprisingly, Friedman says his top priority this offseason will be starting pitching. That means assessing internal options as well as considering potential trades and free agent signings. Dodgers’ starters struggled in 2023, posting an uncharacteristic 4.57 ERA and 4.37 SIERA. Things became especially bleak toward the end of the year; ten different pitchers started a game for the Dodgers in September, combining for a 4.87 ERA. The team had no shortage of depth, but too few reliable options.

Clayton Kershaw and Julio Urías will be free agents after the season, as will Lance Lynn – presuming the Dodgers decline his $18MM club option in favor of a $1MM buyout. On top of that, Tony Gonsolin will be out for most, if not all, of the 2024 campaign recovering from Tommy John surgery. Dustin May’s status for next season is also up in the air, after the righty underwent flexor tendon surgery in July.

That leaves Bobby Miller, who just completed his rookie season, and Walker Buehler, who hasn’t pitched since June 2022, as the only healthy, established starters remaining in the Dodgers rotation. The team has several young starting pitchers on the roster, including Ryan Pepiot, Emmet Sheehan, Michael Grove, and Gavin Stone, but none with more than 100 innings of big league experience. Friedman expressed confidence in Miller and Buehler during his press conference, but he understands the need to augment the rotation.

As for Kershaw, Friedman made it clear that the Dodgers are “absolutely” interested in bringing the superstar pitcher back for another season. However, the ten-time All-Star hasn’t yet told the team if he plans to return. “I think he and [his wife] Ellen are going to take some time right now and assess,” the team president said (relayed by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic). “The ball’s squarely in their court.”

In addition to starting pitching, Friedman will also look to address position player needs during the offseason. The Dodgers had an excellent offense in 2023, finishing second in baseball in OPS and runs scored. That said, designated hitter J.D. Martinez, utility man Enrique Hernández, and outfielders Jason Heyward and David Peralta will all be free agents after the conclusion of the World Series. The team will need to replace Martinez and Heyward’s production in particular. In addition, the Dodgers might look to add a new infielder so Mookie Betts can return to a regular role in right field.

Gomes didn’t speak as much as his boss, but he did confirm a report that he declined to interview for the GM opening in Boston. “I’m very flattered and appreciate the interest,” he said (per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register). “But I love it here, and my family loves it here. I’m passionate about this organization and solely focused on winning multiple championships here.”

        The perfect rotation would be:
        Blake Snell
        Yoshinobu Yamamoto
        Clayton Kershaw
        WalkerBuehler
        Bobby Miller

        Depth
        Dustin May
        Ryan Pepiot
        Gavin Stone
        Michael Grove

Trade from prospect stockpile to add a cheap middle infielder and an outfielder/DH so that the money can be on two new Ace starting pitchers

Hope that Gavin Lux returns to be a super-sub

Glasnow is a soft, glorified “opener” who should be used as such. No way is Glasnow a front end starter. That being said, Kershaw’s best days are Long in the past.

Braves will take Kershaw over Morton, just for the veteran presence. Then only have Kershaw pitch to twice the order in the playoffs, not run him
          Into the ground.

Morton owns the Dodgers? In 2020 WS, he gave up 5 runs in 4 1/3 innings. In 2021, he gave up 2 runs in the first inning and walked 6 in 5 innings. He’s one of the pitchers the Dodgers would love to face in the postseason.

I would rather have Aaron Nola than Snell. While he might not have 2 cy youngs, he has been a lot more durable and dependable than Snell. He will also be a hell of a lot cheaper. Not to mention he is going off in the postseason right now.

Snell is a guy who relies on the chase and he walks a lot of guys, and I don’t think that is something LA coaches will love. He seems like a NYM signee this offseason.

I’ve always agreed with Friedman but, Choosing Kershaw contract over a guy like Seager (a proven NLCS/WS MVP) is head scratching. I don’t give a rats d.ick about regular season performance. It’s the post season I care about. Dodgers management is going soft I think. We need to replace Turner, Seager and Bellingers production that was the formula to winning it all.

The size of man’s balls in October merits the cash they ask for.

Seager has and is continuing to put up a .500 average in October that’s insane.

Same with the Nathan eovaladis, ugly regular season numbers with stellar post season numbers.

By that logic if they re-sign Kershaw again, they’ll be out on Ohtani this offseason. Despite the fact that Ohtani’s contract will likely end up being +20 times the amount that Kershaw will end up getting.

Maybe they don’t want to commit 300+ to an out of position injury prone shortstop.

Although admittedly he is tearing the ball up right now, but who knows if that will last. Dodgers had Trea Turner and Gavin Lux in the system at the time and didn’t really need Seager that bad.

Totally and utterly disappointed they are not moving on from Dave Roberts. How many mistakes does he have to make in the playoffs for upper management to realize he has no idea how to manage a post season game? Every year he makes mistakes that cost us chances to win and he doesn’t seem to learn.
Dodger management please reconsider and fire Dave now.

I think that they should replace Roberts to demonstrate that heads have to roll

That being said, Roberts was not the problem. His pitching decisions are decided upstairs. It is unreasonable to say that Roberts should threaten to quit if he disagrees with the POBO and GM’s calls.

The injuries to Buehler and Gonsolin were huge. Urias was already coming off the tracks before his off the field transgressions sealed his fate. Not too many teams can survive losing that kind of pitching and do well in the post-season.

So yes, I could see making a change, but the failure is not on Roberts.

Hard to believe that a nerd from upstairs would have said leave Lynn in to give up 4 homeruns in one inning.
Then put a pitcher in a game that’s win or go home with a 6.13 era. Then when he struggles keep him in. Dave got away with it but just barely.
If either of these are what the orders are from upstairs someone upstairs should be fired.

I would have not pinch hit Peralta with Barnes. That said, it was a lefty. Barnes at least puts it in play. And it’s not like Peralta had been lighting it up. Again, I would disagree with Roberts but it was not a no brainer to stick with Peralta and most likely he would have also not done anything. If that is his greatest sin this postseason we’re really desperate.

All this lamenting the end-of-season result is a discredit to a good young DBacks team that outplayed the Dodgers in every aspect over three games. It happens in baseball.

If you can’t accept how much chance / fortune / luck is involved in baseball then you will seldom be a happy fan.

Speculation has been that Ohtani would be a Dodger, yet his TJS means he can’t pitch and the Dodgers need pitching. Will they direct their resources elsewhere now, opening up the door for Ohtani to sign elsewhere?

Honestly I called in Dodger Talk several times to complain that Dodger hitters NEED to swing at first pitches. And what did the Rangers do yesterday? Swing at 2 first pitches of the game, get on base, score a run and control the tempo of the game after. That falls on the manager. I’ve always supported Dodger management but we need, new hitters and a tweak to post season hitting philosophy.

Not sure what you’re talking about. On game 3 alone, first 10 ABs, the Dodgers swung at first pitch 6 times and took 1 ball. That is probably too aggressive but it obviously depends on the pitch. If your notion is that the Dodgers just blindly take the first pitch you’re dead wrong. They believe in working counts as many teams do, but that’s mostly on plate discipline and not chasing away from the zone. If baseball were only that simple. Offense was not the issue this season. Unfortunately it was an issue in the three playoff games. Teams can go cold over a three game stretch. Unfortunately it happened in the worst time possible.

Ok, and what is your point? What if both swings yielded outs? So, you have two pitches and two outs. There are tens of thousands at bats over a given season. Swinging at the first pitch is neither good nor bad. Pros and cons and it depends on the pitch, location, movement, pitch type, etc.

Why shouldn’t the postseason be tailored to favor the higher win teams? There’s no point of having playoffs if there isn’t an advantage to being good in the regular season. At this point the MLB might as well go the soccer route and just crown the regular season winner the champion. No need for playoffs.

I prefer 4 teams start the playoffs on Tuesday. Also, eliminate the five game series. All seven game series.

The extra days off did the Dodgers in? I would ve thought not 1 of the 3 starting pitchers complete 3 innings hurt them. Imagine a team whose rotation was decimated by injuries had injury issues in the playoffs. What a surprise…

As for the Braves they suffered the same fate to same team as last season, yet now its the fault of the format?? Just like last year their pitching gave up ro many HRs, yet now it’s the fault of extra days off. Just doesn’t seem to jive with reality.

The SP was bad, no doubt about that. and the hitting was also atrocious Purpose is not to make excuses but there is something to be said about not playing a competitive game for 5 days while your opponents are playing. Simulated games are not the same. It wouldn’t surprise me if that is a contributor to a team not being as sharp. Again, no one can say either way for sure, and this could impact players/teams in different ways. Reality or not in who’s perspective?

Prior should be the one coach to go, IMO. Starting pitching was miserable from day 1, Friedman knew it was his biggest need and waited until last second to go after Eddy from the Tigers. Rosario and Braiser were the best additions this year. They stupidly kept Rosario off the PS roster and never fixed starting pitching issues the entire season. Lux will be the starting 2B in ‘24, so Mookie can go back to RF. They need to trade prospects for proven aces who don’t have a long track record of injuries. Urias is done. They should offer Bauer a contract but they won’t. As a life long Dodgers fan of 30+ years, the only “Organizational Failure” was who and what they promoted at Dodgers Stadium this past season. LaSorda will curse the team until ownership changes. God Bless!

Schilling/Johnson, Koufax/Drysdale, Gibson/Carlton, Spahn and Sain. Pitching wins playoff and WS games. Hitting helps of course, but pitching wins it all. Dodgers lost on August 31st when they settled for Lance Lynn. Julio Urias aside, Dodgers should have seen this coming, but they were “blinded by the Betts/Freeman light”.

Putting together teams that constantly win the division

The team with, I’m almost certain, the most wins over the last decade.

Not saying Robert has been ALL the issues but I really feel like they need a change of philosophy. No denying that is hasn’t work well with Roberts. They have had some amazing talent and teams over the last decade with only one title to show for it. Someone like Bochy and maybe they have 3-4.

Who knows for sure but like I said, I just don’t think it’s worked with Roberts.

Regular season success sure but I could manage that team, in that division and be successful.

As far as Kershaw, not going to go look it up but I think that his 2023 ERA was less than his career avr. Pretty impressive for a HOFer on the wrong side of 30 that is “washed up” because his career ERA is impressive on its own.

You know what you get with Kershaw. Very good, and sometimes great, starting pitching but will need a huge break from mid June to August. Sign me up. I’ll take it.

I’d pass on Otani but drive up the price if SF wants him badly enough. Great hitter and MAYBE a great pitcher going forward but too many dollars for the risk of not pitching as well or ever. Could he be a dominate closer? Would he want to? Not smart enough to know.

Dodgers lineup was built for the regular season. Lacked depth. Get by Freeman and Betts, you’re in the clear. With both contained in the NLDS the offense suffered. Dodgers need another bat or two.

Although Roberts should have been dismissed before 2020, and kept his job because of 2020, 2023 was not his fault. Dodgers have had better teams in the last 8 years or so than the 2023 squad.

Not really, JDM had a monster season and Muncy and Smith are still dangerous hitters. Bottom of lineup is weaker but Heyward had a decent season against RHP Outman was fine. Yes, they were top heavy but who would have thought that Betts and Freeman would go 1/21?

We all knew that this team was not as good as other Dodger teams, and it all starts with SP. What was not accounted for was the lineup struggling so badly when they were essentially the second best hitting team in MLB. Playoffs doesn’t change that. But going cold in the three games of playoffs was terrible timing.

Muncy is not dangerous. JDM and Will Smith are good hitters. Lacked depth beyond that, as I said. “Not really”, you sure about that?

Why Muncy is not dangerous; facing good pitchers who won’t walk him makes him a near-useless hitter since he hits bombs and nothing else. Exposes his deficiency. Muncy needs to be the 7th or 8th best hitter in the lineup. He’s higher on the Dodgers.

It’s interesting that you are so strong with YOUR opinions but chose not to support those opinions with facts. First, you praise Smith and dump on Muncy, and yet Muncy had a higher OPS, more Runs, Home Runs, RBIs than Smith. Career as a Dodger Muncy’s OPS is slightly higher than Smith’s. So how is Smith a good hitter and Muncy not dangerous? By the way the notion that he hits bombs and nothing else is wrong too. Muncy’s OBP as a Dodger is 0.356 or just about the same as Smith’s 0.357. Again, you have no clue what you’re talking about. You probably think batting average is the most important stat. Slam dunk that Muncy’s club option is picked up. Smith is the one that spent too much time at the 3 hole. His numbers have fallen each of the last three years, down to a career low in 2023. I thought that he would be a slam dunk long-term Dodger but as it stands now he needs a big bounce back year in 2024.

The Dodgers have won ONE non-asterisked World Series in the last 58 years. 1981 was a sham strike-shortened season where whichever team was in first at the break was automatically in the playoffs, and 2020 was, well, you know. So 1988 is it. If success is judged by legitimate World Series wins, the Dodgers have been an organizational failure for a very long time.
