Phillies, Aaron Nola Didn’t Come Close To Extension Last Offseason

By Leo Morgenstern | October 16, 2023 at 2:05pm CDT

It’s no secret that the Phillies wanted to extend Aaron Nola last winter.

Speaking on WIP-FM radio in January, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said an extension for Nola was “something we’d like to do” (as relayed by Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer). He further explained, “We want Aaron to be in the organization for a long time, no question. We love him. We love his abilities. I know he likes it in Philadelphia. So that’s something that will be in our mind… It’s never easy to be able to get done, but we’d love to keep Aaron in the organization for a long time.”

About a month later, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported that the two sides had exchanged offers, and a few months after that, Jon Heyman of the New York Post revealed that the team’s offer was north of $100MM, although he noted it was well short of the $162MM guarantee Carlos Rodón got from the Yankees in December.

Now, Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that the two sides were never particularly close to an agreement. According to Nightengale, the All-Star right-hander sought an eight-year deal worth over $200MM – significantly more than Rodón’s six-year, $162MM pact. The Phillies, for their part, weren’t willing to go anywhere near that number, instead offering a four- or five-year contract.

It’s understandable why Nola was asking for so much, but at the same time, it’s no surprise the team was hesitant to extend him through his age-38 season. Heading into the 2023 campaign, the righty looked like one of the top impending free agents, perhaps second only to Shohei Ohtani. Ten free agents had signed nine-figure deals the previous winter, and the highest-paid pitchers, Rodón and Jacob deGrom, reeled in $185MM and $162MM, respectively. Nola has never been as dominant as those two pitchers at their best, but he is far more durable, and since his first full season, he has outpaced both in Baseball Reference WAR. Thus, it was always going to take a sizeable guarantee to convince him to forgo free agency.

The Phillies have long been hesitant to sign pitchers to long-term contracts. The largest deal the team has ever signed with a pitcher was a six-year, $144MM extension for Cole Hamels during his age-28 season. Meanwhile, the largest free agent contract they’ve given to a pitcher was a five-year, $120MM pact for Cliff Lee, when the veteran was entering his age-32 campaign. Needless to say, an eight-year, $200MM extension for Nola would have been completely unprecedented for this ball club.

At the same time, the Phillies have been more aggressive with their spending since Dombrowski took over, surpassing the luxury tax for the first time in 2022 and signing a free agent to a nine-figure deal in each of the past three offseasons. What’s more, Dombrowski signed several pitchers to big-money contracts during his time with the Tigers and Red Sox, namely Justin Verlander, David Price, and Chris Sale. Nevertheless, the Phillies and their top baseball executive weren’t willing to meet Nola’s demands for an extension this past winter.

Nola could still be back in Phillies pinstripes next season, but at this point in the year, it’s all but certain he’ll test the waters of free agency first. While his performance in 2023 may have brought down his value (4.46 ERA in 32 starts), he remains one of the most durable starting pitchers in the game. Moreover, his underlying numbers are less offensive than his ERA (3.75 SIERA, 3.77 xERA, 4.49 K/BB), and he has looked phenomenal thus far in the postseason. The 2018 Cy Young finalist should be among the most sought-after righties on the market, along with Ohtani, Sonny Gray, and NPB star Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Indeed, at least one team, the Cardinals, has already expressed interest in pursuing Nola this winter.

He had his worst season, but a good postseason erases all that. He’s always healthy and always throws a ton of innings. He’ll get his well-earned payday with Philly or elsewhere.

Have got to agree. Anyone who can pitch through a full season and still be “fresh” in October is priceless.

Someone will be 7/200 or somewhere in that area. Other than Ohtani (minus another year, sadly) Gray, & perhaps Yamamoto, who else is available?

He’ll get paid. He’s healthy and can be dominant any night of the week and the postseason proves it. With all the bucks the Phillies have been spending, you’d think they’d bring him back to keep that 1-2 punch. Are there studs in the system to replace him? Maybe DD has his eyes on another pitcher?

Agreed @sfes but who other than many Yamamoto is durable and of a similar age? I think DD would go short & costly, not long & risky.

Yeah, he loves to spend big though. If they don’t win the WS I could see them pushing hard for either guy, but yeah Nola’s going to be on the wrong side of 30 – though with the recent track record of Japanese aces coming here at a young age – Senga, Ohtani, I think Yamamoto would be worth a shot. His numbers are better than Senga’s were. Not sure what their farm system looks like but their window is now. Burnes would be a rental and Nola is proven and familiar there.

Yes. The system, while not particularly deep, actually has a lot of crazy talented SP. Still, you can’t just assume on the baby aces will be as good as Nola. You got to attempt to keep him.

Nola may have had trouble adjusting to the pitch clock and has finally adjusted. Also, his numbers look like he may pitch his best every other year. Some pitchers are like that, Josh Beckett for example.

he basically had his 2021 season again. 2 of the last 3 he’s been underwhelming, and thats with good peripherals, so maybe his situational pitching isnt very good. Makes you scratch your head and i know it drives my philllie fan friends nuts when he cant get through 6 yet again. Whatever the case, 2021 and 2023 don’t warrant $200M that’s for sure.

There’s a significant difference when he pitches out of the stretch. He tends to lose it with men on, but his last 4 starts, he changed his approach and looked great.

Crazy the contrast of two of the top FA arms with men on:

          Nola .289/.333/.482 (.815 OPS) 278 PA
          Snell .174/.276/.252 (.528 OPS) 312 PA

Snell was better with the bases empty as well, but not to that extreme.

Does anyone actually see the Cardinals giving Nola 8 years/$200M? I suspect very few teams would be quite in that ballpark. Nola is impressively durable, but I suspect at his age 5-6 years would be the limit for most teams.

I could see an 8 year $200 million deal happening. Would probably just put some incentives in it and health requirements though and defer a chunk of money. Might seem like an overpay but he’ll likely get a deal in that range.

He should absolutely have no problem finding multiple suitors at 6 and 24M$ per…so yes, all it will take is 1 club to love him and “overpay” with another year or two and a few mil more per. I absolutely see it happening.

Relative scarcity tends to drive price–and once in a while, a team jFO just fumbles it and grossly overpays. The Yankees would love a Rodón do-over. Nola is very good–but nether his 2021 nor 2023 seasons were special. He’s going to get paid a lot, but it’s not without performance risk

I think he’s gone at minimum he’ll get 150+million. Even with the other starters out there. Gray is about to be 34, Yamamote is still unproven in the MLB. Nola for his part just turned 30 in july and has been consistenly good not great.

My simple-minded take is he’ll only come back to the Phils if they meet @1/2 way say 6/150. Don’t think Nola accepts a 4-5 yr deal…
If anyone goes higher he’s gone w/o hesitation.

Don’t blame anyone for going for the money, most have done nothing else since they were 6… I’ll miss him a bit…

Rangers GM should have his head examined for signing deGrom. Same for Cashman. Rodon always hurt. deGrom always hurt.

Nola takes the ball every fifth day. Even so it will take a bonehead to go over six years

Jose Berrios had a better three year run going into his extension than Nola has had over the past three years. Both have taken the ball every fifth day for most of their careers. Contracts have gone up a bit since then but not $200,000,000 for a 102 ERA+ in the last three years

McGarry, Painter or Abel will be in the Phillies rotation for 2024.
Nola may be replaced by others either internally
or by a trade for a younger, cheaper replacement starter.
The Phillies cannot just sign every one of their free agents to maximum value or they will wake up at the end of some of those long term contracts with a severe financial hangover that could take years to get over and rebuild the roster in 6-8 years.
(like what happened at the end of the last run of Phillies contention).
That is what you have a farm system and trading options for.

Love to see Nola end up in Chicago. Nice 1-2 with Steele. Stroman (for 1 more year), Taillon, and some combo of Wicks/Assad would be pretty good in that division. Heyward’s money is all gone. Time to let Kyle walk. Taillon should be better in year 2 of that deal. Showed positive signs in the 2nd half. Love to get Belly back, but I think he’ll break the bank somewhere else. Brewers should back slide a little with Woodruff hurt and Burnes likely to be traded. Cardinals are looking pretty old these days, with an incompetent manager to boot. Reds need more pitching. The Pirates owner is trash, so I don’t expect much from them this winter. Time to be aggressive on the North Side.
