Braves Claim Angel Perdomo, Outright Jackson Stephens

By Anthony Franco | November 6, 2023 at 4:09pm CDT

The Braves have claimed lefty reliever Angel Perdomo off waivers from the Pirates, according to an announcement from Pittsburgh. Atlanta reliever Jackson Stephens was outrighted from the 40-man roster and elected free agency in a corresponding move. Pittsburgh also announced that Yerry De Los Santos — previously reported as on waivers — went unclaimed and was outrighted from the roster.

Perdomo, 29, has pitched in parts of three big league seasons. He logged a personal-high 29 innings with the Pirates in 2023 after signing an offseason minor league deal. The 6’8″ southpaw showed promise, working to a 3.72 ERA while striking out an elite 37.6% of batters faced. He generated swinging strikes at a solid 13% clip and held opposing lefties to a .125/.205/.225 line in a small sample.

Were he healthy, that likely would have been enough to hold a spot in the Pittsburgh relief corps. Unfortunately, Perdomo landed on the injured list with a season-ending elbow problem in August. Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported over the weekend that Perdomo underwent a Tommy John procedure a month ago. He’s likely to miss all of 2024. With no injured list during the offseason, the Bucs felt it best to let him go.

Atlanta will carry him on the 40-man roster, at least for the moment. Should he stick on the roster all winter, they could place him on the 60-day IL during Spring Training. He’ll step into the spot vacated by Stephens, who made five appearances late in the season. The 29-year-old righty posted a 3.28 ERA over 24 2/3 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett. He’s likely to find another minor league deal this offseason.

Actually 5th. Vinny Capra, Tucpita Marcano, Alfonso Rivas, Angel Perdomo, and now Andujar were claimed by other teams. Yerry was put on waviers, but cleared, and Cody Bolton was traded (not claimed).

The Padres need a manager so by all means, make it 8. Take Shelton. Please

I hear the Padres are considering managerial genius Ross for the manager position. Maybe in the interview process he can blame the Pirates for the failure to make the playoffs and the loss of his job. Class act

Well, Andujar may finally get his first shot since 2018 for regular playing time without being blocked, or put on the hot seat immediatley. Wish we could have kept him, though I understand why we let him go. Banking on a good three week stretch after over four years of injuries and poor play isn’t a good bet, especially if the Pirates want to try and be decent next year.

I like this pickup as a high strikeout lefty to add to their bullpen. I think French and Kranny can definitely help get the most out of him.

Either way it’s a low risk move that could definitely help them add to a weakness of theirs, which is their LH bullpen options.

That is if he returns to full strength in 2025.

Looked promising the lil I saw em. Got nice high 90s fastball Machado can attest2 that. Was hot n pissed when Perdomo drilled em in middle of back, seemed like Manny wanted 2go after em but was in 2much pain. Can’t believe he made it past all those teams w/worse records than Atl. They don’t need pitching ?

Braves are either the smartest team in baseball or Angel isn’t anything special to be worth the 40 man spot. He got past 28 teams. All they had to do was trade some teenage long shot loto ticket.

He was a good reliever in 2023. For a team with 40 space all they have to do is wait for March and put him on 60 day. Or better yet claim and dfa him which the Braves may do.

I thought his TJ surgery would keep teams from claiming him. Now he’ll hold a roster spot for 2 off seasons before he can pitch again. I think claiming him was the bigger risk.
