Braves Acquire Matt Carpenter, Ray Kerr From Padres

By Darragh McDonald and Anthony Franco | December 15, 2023 at 7:12pm CDT

7:12pm: San Diego is including $1.5MM in cash, reports Dennis Lin of the Athletic (on X).

6:48pm: The Padres and Braves have agreed to a trade, per announcements from both clubs. Designated hitter Matt Carpenter, left-hander Ray Kerr and cash considerations are heading to Atlanta in exchange for minor league outfielder Drew Campbell.

Carpenter, 38, had a multi-year run of success with the Cardinals but his production dipped towards the end of the previous decade, to the point where he hit just .169/.305/.275  in 2021. He made a concerted effort to revamp his swing before 2022 and it seemed to work. He hit an astounding .305/.412/.727 for the Yankees in 2022, but in just 47 games before he fouled a ball off his foot and had his season ended by a fracture.

The Padres decided to bank on that bounceback, signing him to a two-year deal going into 2023. That guaranteed $12MM and allowed him to opt out after the first season.  He couldn’t keep that magic run with the Yankees going, as his time as a Padre resulted in a line of just .176/.322/.319. As a player who saw all of his time at either designated hitter or first base, the complete lack of offensive productivity put Carpenter on the fringe of the roster.

San Diego kept him on the roster all season. Carpenter made the easy decision to exercise his $5.5MM player option. That’s not an outrageous sum but clearly beyond what San Diego wanted to devote to a player on the bubble. The Friars have spent much of the offseason cutting payroll. It’s unclear how much of the Carpenter deal for which the Padres remain responsible after accounting for the cash considerations, but they’ll offload some portion of the money in exchange for sending Kerr to Atlanta.

A 29-year-old reliever, Kerr was acquired from Seattle as part of the Adam Frazier deal over the 2021-22 offseason. The 6’3″ southpaw has pitched in 29 MLB games over the past two seasons, most of which came this year. Kerr owns a 5.06 ERA in 32 innings, but he has shown a promising arsenal. He has punched out an above-average 28.1% of batters faced at the highest level. Kerr fanned 29% of opponents while pitching to a stellar 2.25 ERA in 36 Triple-A frames last season.

Kerr has atypical velocity for a left-hander. He averaged 96 MPH on his heater and a solid 82.5 MPH on a curveball in his MLB time this year. That resulted in an excellent 14.7% swinging strike percentage. He has never consistently harnessed that power stuff, however. Kerr walked nearly 10% of opponents in the majors and over 11% of batters faced in Triple-A. Over parts of six minor league seasons, he owns an 11.6% walk percentage.

With less than one year of major league service, Kerr is at least two years away from arbitration. He still has a minor league option remaining, so the Braves can keep him at Triple-A Gwinnett for another season. Kerr slots in behind A.J. Minter, recent trade pickup Aaron Bummer, Tyler Matzek and Dylan Lee on the lefty relief depth chart.

Atlanta has shown a willingness to take on part or all of other teams’ undesirable contracts to acquire players of interest. They took on money in the Marco Gonzales and Evan White deals to bring in Jarred Kelenic from Seattle. They subsequently offloaded Gonzales to the Pirates and flipped White to the Angels as part of a deal that brought in David Fletcher and the Max Stassi contract, which they subsequently paid down to deal the catcher to the White Sox.

It’s fair to wonder if they’ll look to move Carpenter as well. For now, he projects as a left-handed bench bat. Atlanta is in the the second tier of luxury penalization and will be second-time payors next year. They’ll therefore pay a 42% tax on whatever portion of the Carpenter contract they’re assuming.

San Diego also adds the 26-year-old Campbell. He was a 23rd round pick in 2019 out of Louisville. A left-handed hitter, Campbell posted a modest .254/.307/.404 slash in 300 plate appearances as a 25-year-old in Double-A. He can play all three outfield spots but spent more time in a corner this year. After going unselected in the Rule 5 draft, he’s likely to start the season in Triple-A.

Kerr has a great arm, but you don’t know where its gonna go. Plus he doesn’t have a lot of movement on his fastball so he does get raked a bit. Always thought he was a potential closer, but no such luck. Hope he thrives in ATL

          2) Trading Acuna’s brother is not commenting on his own talent.

The Braves farm is really weak, and they cleaned out the out-of-options guys from the bottom of the 40-man. This is AA’s way of filling it in again.

Paying to dump those players is more like it. Paid all but the minimum on the last trade of a bad player, Stassi, that he had picked up days before. Will be the same with Carpenter if he can dump him at all.

The Braves have two problems, the overall thinness of the farm, and the lack of flexible players on the 40-man. None of the transactions recently will fix the farm, but they might address the 40-man and buy some time for the farm to be rebuilt.

AA is crafty, Atlanta ball club just purchased Friars’ minor league pitcher of year and will presumably cut Carpenter. A+ for Atlanta ball club.

With this move, even the most extreme Padres fans must concede salary dump and that the new ownership is saying “uncle”. This does not mean Padres will miss playoffs, but dude it is clear that Padres are cutting payroll and not adding to it.

Kerr is a tantalizing option who they can allow him to work woth their AAA staff for a season and still have plenty of control left with him.

Also, in terms of Carpenter, the Braves have ZERO backups in case anything happens to Olson for any extended period of time. They also needed a good bench bat off the bench, and it wasn’t that long ago Carpenter was raking with some mechanical changes. It’s worth taking a chance to see if they can get him to regain his form, amd if not they just designate him for assignment and let him go.

If he does work out, he can be a solid power bat that can rotate into the lineup, or pinch hit in late game situations if need be.

I love adding depth, it only helps. Plus, I trust the Braves coaches to help players turn around recent slumps. They’ve dealt with the worst from Ozuna and he’s turned out great.

Don’t kid yourself Carpenter is a hard worker and then you add him with Seitzer as hitting coach. He will probably be a pretty good lockerroom presence at around 2 million pinch hitter. Then the left hander will probably be part of a deal later like for Burnes.

$5MM to purchase and effective lefty reliever is a good investment, especially with multiple years of control at a low base salary. Padres clearly still looking to reduce payroll obligations.

More than just a little optimistic for a reliever with 4.33 ERA and just 22 appearances last season and a 5.06 ERA and just 29 appearances over 2 seasons with the Padres. .

Kerr has good stuff, but is 29 and has never been able to harness it.

They have replaced Barlow with the guy they traded him for, De Los Santos. In the Soto trade they brought on 2 or 3 relievers, depending on if King actually turns into the next Lugo.

AND then I actually read your comment. LHP. Not just relievers.

AA did a lot of the contract extensions though, correct? In that respect, he’s done a great job. Plus he acquired Murphy and Olson for peanuts.

Contreras is really good, but I’m not sure the overnight framing success is going to be real. If it is, great for him, but he was flat-out bad before and he’s below average in every other defensive aspect of the job.

Sean Murphy is unreal defensively across all duties, especially in CS. 2023 wasn’t a flash in the pan, teams are going to continue to run more and more. The upgrade is meaningful.

Muller has been pretty bad. One of the major pieces in the Olson trade couldn’t stick with the A’s, which is really something. Overall, both moves were pretty dope for Atlanta.

@Mets6986: Yes, peanuts. Muller is a prospect trending in the wrong direction who was atrocious in ~140 innings between AAA and the majors last year. One of the worst pitchers in the league. Maybe he recovers but so far has provided negative value to the A’s. Contreras is the only thing of value they gave up and it was a gamble. You’d be hard-pressed to find a Braves fan who doesn’t like that trade.

Contreras finished 4th in Fangraphs C defense ranking (several spot ahead of Murphy), won the Silver Slugger at C and finished 11th in MVP voting with 5 defensive runs saved. He wasn’t below average in every other defensive category. He finished 5th in Fielding Run Value and 5th in framing. Murphy is a very good catcher, so is Contreras. The Brewers have done this with their last several catchers.

@WiseCounsell, what I said is correct. He only placed so high specifically because of the framing, and was below average in the other aspects.

rSZ is framing, he’s +9. He’s -1 in each of cERA, rSB, and rGFP, the other three inputs into DRS for catchers. The +5 DRS is actually a little lower than the +6 you’d expect, so one or more of those other aspects rate below -1 and are removing another run of value in total DRS.

I’m not sure the framing is real, because he’s only been good at it in this one season. He was -3 in rSZ in the two previous seasons, and -4.9 and -2.8 in FRM before 2023. Maybe he’s really improved his framing, or maybe 2023 is an outlier. It’s hard to tell.

@Smacky Iglesias is just not a closer anymore. They tried Minter last year as a closer and he imploded. Joe Jiminez is a good reliever. I’m pretty sure McHugh is a free agent (might be wrong), but they should bring him back and get a dominant closer. They also have that guy from the Rockies (forgot name) whos ok but thats all I see him as. Someone like Josh Hader, Bednar, Andres Munoz should be their top targets

@Sid Bream Speed Demon So you admit they tried out Minter as a closer. Just because Iglesias was hurt doesn’t change what I said. Your a fool. As for your point about the Braves bullpen being so much better than the Mets, your 100% right. Its obvious. Infact, I believe that the Mets currently have a bottom 3 bullpen in baseball. We aren’t winning any games with Brooks Raley, Drew “Homerun” Smith, Tonkin, Austin Addams, etc. I’m the last guy on this site that will say anything good about the Mets. The team has been poorly run for decades, and to be honest Cohen has made the whole organization worse than the Wilpons. He spends 300 million dollars on essentially garbage

@Smacky Kenley Jansen lead the league in saves when he was on the Braves. Did the Braves bring him back? No they did not. The reason why is because they knew Kenley just wasn’t that good despite his save totals. I’m a big Iglesias fan, I’ve liked him since his Reds days. He just didn’t look like the same pitcher last year. Look around the league. Young guys that throw hard are dominating these closer roles. Iglesias just doesn’t have that dominating fastball anymore. Guys like Camilo Doval, Felix Bautista, or Jhoan Duran are the type of closer this Braves team needs. I’m not saying they need to get these specific guys, but they should get someone with that type of potential/calibur

Eh, Jimenez Johnson and Lopez deals were nice. Kelenic is so so, I can Appreciate a deal banging on upside of former top prospects. I understand moving whites contract for a semi useful piece in Fletcher. This deal has me speachless though. I’m giving AA the benefit of the doubt and trust a starter will be added. I would say starting pitching is by far the biggest hole, their bullpen is actually really decent.

The Pads are sending money Atlanta’s way. So this is probably not saving any money, it’s paying Carpenter to go away and throwing in Ray Kerr to get an outfield prospect Preller apparently really likes.

To be fair, maybe Atlanta took half of Carp’s money on. We won’t know until we know how much the cash considerations were.

Hopefully SD sees something to improve him. More likely he is just a depth piece. Kerr is already a mlb reliever worthy of just about any pen. Braves probably see what I do and if it works he will be significantly better.

Hard to judge deal until know how much of Carpenter salary Padres are paying. If at least half not a bad one for Braves, at least assuming their goal is the wild card instead of first so they don’t get “cheated” by having a few days off in playoffs.

I see zero reason for the Braves to do this deal. We don’t need MC at all, Kerr isn’t worth taking on any of MC’s salary. I suppose it’s a zero risk deal but why… why do this deal. What is the why to the last couple deals honestly…. AA hitting that spiked eggnog a little early? Making people think he has some master plan when there is really nothing?

AA trusts the pitching staff to fix guys with good stuff that haven’t been able to put it all together. They’ve done this with several players, most notably Matzek in the WS year and others like Pierce Johnson.

If 1 of these guys pan out for multiple seasons, it pays for all of them. He’s hit on several of these lottery tickets, albeit for rather short stints thus far.

I’ve been onboard with most of AAs moves this offseason, but this makes zero sense to me. Carpenter has zero value and adding this money to the books is insane. Unless they offload Ozuna somewhere soon (which no one probably would want) it makes little sense to add a struggling bat with no real position. Kerr is interesting but has no prior pedigree. It’s more money to steep budget when you haven’t even added a starting pitcher yet. I trust AA and believe in what he does but I’m just not seeing this one.

This is his most make sense move. Kelenic was betting on his coaching staff. Angels was to take on a bit of extra salary to get useful players. This one was a no brainer. As the other 29 gms have no brains. Kerr as is … Is worth 4m. With the possible fixes I see with him he will be worth double that a year if successful.

Salary dump by the Padres, and the Braves get a guy in Ray Kerr they think they might turn into a flamethrowing stud in the pen. Bet the Braves cut Carpenter in three seconds.

    Make that two seconds.

So Atlanta’s getting a shot at 6 years of Kerr’s upside for the $5.5m left on Carpenter’s absurd 2/12m deal.

    0.977 WHIP
    5.7 H/9
    0.6 HR/9
    3.1 BB/9
    13.5 K/9

Kerr’s numbers in AA. That’s what they’re aiming for.

Kerr is in the class of guys Stearns should have been using Cohen’s billions to go after. Not the injury-bugged relievers whose upside is 30 innings with a 4.00 ERA.

Kerr probably won’t get back to his AA numbers, but if he doesn’t his downside is probably the upside of the guys Stearns has been scraping off the scrap heap.

Way too much salary has been taken on since the night before the winter meetings started! Also several questionable trades before & after the meetings! Braves need at least one top Starter, and I have not seen any indication this is a priority to him! Just a bunch of ridiculous trades that don’t make any sense and puts them further down that CBT TAX HOLE!

This trade is about Kerr not Carpenter folks. Thier leveraging thier extra roster space and financial flexibility to aquire players that they find value in. These moves often pan out for AA. No telling if this one will but they’ve done well so far. These smaller moves to craftily build out the roster will give them the flexibility to make a big move that’ll cost bigger dollars if the right move comes along.

If we assume Atlanta is paying half of Carpenter’s salary, this is paying Carp $5.5 million not to play for them, vs. giving up Ray Kerr and $2.75 million to get an outfield prospect.

Reasonable minds will differ on this one, but I’d give a small golf clap for getting something of value out of Carp’s remaining contract, and $2.75 million can buy another arm similar to Kerr’s.

AA building a dangerous pen to tame the best hitters in crunch time & playoffs. What else would need to be upgraded on such a strong roster. Smart move for little money and expendable prospect. Carp can be passed on to another team, who’ll absorb more of the cost.

Kerr, Bummer, Lopez, Jimenez is quite a strong group to supplement Iglesias, Minter, Pierce Johnson…League’s best pen.

Whether AA keeps Carpenter or not is irrelevant. However, Matt Carpenter in Truist has an OBP of .451 Slugg .667 Ops 1.118 5 home runs 10 Rbi’s in 36 ab’s, that is a very good record and he obviously likes hitting in this park. Do people honestly believe that if he’s kept as a PH option that it is an easy role, or an easy thing to do? It isn’t, but I don’t mind having him as a lefty option. The comments against AA are hilarious in regard to this move.

They just corrected themselves, 32 on the 40 man after this trade. Although 1 of them is a Rule V draft pick

Hear me out. This trade sets the stage for the greatest 12 team deal in modern MLB history. Pirates get Lesko. Cleveland gets Campusano. Seattle gets Kim, Rangers get Pauley, Cracker van Beethoven plays halftime show at Super Bowl,, Detroit gets Rudy Giuliani, Reds get Eric Clap town, Montreal gets Dylan Fingerstench, AAA Reno divests of mascot, Mariana Trench gets Rivera, Populus tremuloides gets cash considerations, New Mexico sucedes, Padres get Acuna and Srider. bAM!

If AA can flip Carpenter and get a little $$ back and/or PTBNL, We already have 2 incoming PTBNL’s from White Sox and Pirates! One more and they could have a backup outfield for Gwinnett, Mississippi, or Rome??

    Bizzaro World in Atlanta continues. Don’t have the wherewithal to sift through the comments for nuggets of common sense. Ohtani has driven quite a few of us;
    looney, looney, looney….?
Will wait for the MLBTR, espn or B-Report offseason grades for all this weirdness to make sense…..
Of course will have a solid Sam Adams or 6 on hand for the a-ha moments…

Not a Braves fan, but I like AA’s style. He just needs to bolster the back end of the rotation to cement the Braves as the easy favorites for best team in baseball imo

Headline should say Padres dump Carpenter.

$5.5 million for Carpenter, $750k for Kerr, and the Padres only ate $1.5 million. The Braves just paid $4.75 million for Kerr.

Nice job Preller. I didn’t think anyone would take Carpenter and you not only did you dump him, you saved nearly $5 million in the process.

Padres payroll at $145 million. CBT at $197 million. Lots of room to maneuver and only 32 guys on the 40 man roster.

Put up a statue of AJ. He traded a minimum wage mlb reliever with many years of control to save 4m.

Maybe AA was hungry for a Big Mac and thought he was trading for Ray Kroc?

He traded a 29 year old reliever that can’t pitch in high leverage situations walks too many batters and had a 5.06 ERA as a Padre and got rid of Carpenter.

Another brilliant move by the Braves to pick up a lefty reliever with promise for cash and a unpromising minor leaguer. Carpenter’s salary is 5.5 M less 1.5 M from the Padres. Plus the Braves will probably trade him and get another 1 M back. The Braves are strengthening the depth of their relief corps, so that they are ready for the inevitable injuries that happen every year. Brilliant use of empty slots on the 40 man roster and extra cash.

One thing about AA’s trades, all of the dead money is for 2024. After this season, the payroll could drop as much as $85M. That will reset the CBT and still leave room to get a couple of starters.

Apparently. They like him enough to pay $4.75 million for Carp’s dead weight.

Atlanta might as well invite him to spring training and see if he can bounce back. There’s that angle too.

They’ll probably pay about $3M of Carp’s money and trade him for a PTBNL.

The Braves would probably need to include a decent prospect. Or, they could trade Carp for a similar inflated contract.
