The Giants are entertaining the idea of trading from their group of young and controllable pitching prospects, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. He says that signing a veteran will make it more likely but it’s a path they are already considering. As for who is in this group that Rosenthal is referring to, he lists lefties Kyle Harrison and Carson Whisenhunt as well as righties Tristan Beck, Keaton Winn, Mason Black and Hayden Birdsong.
The rotation in San Francisco doesn’t look like a strength right now. They recently had Alex Wood and Jakob Junis reach free agency, with Sean Manaea following them by opting out of his contract. The club picked up their option on Alex Cobb, but he’s going to miss at least the first month or so of the season due to hip surgery.
That leaves the club with Logan Webb and a number of questions. Anthony DeSclafani has dealt with ankle, shoulder and elbow injuries over the past two seasons, limiting him 118 2/3 innings of fairly ineffective work. Ross Stripling posted a 5.36 ERA in his 89 innings this year. Harrison debuted in 2023 but has just 34 2/3 innings of major league experience, in which he allowed eight home runs. Winn and Beck also debuted but they also have limited workloads so far and less prospect hype than Harrison.
None of Black, Whisenhunt nor Birdsong are on the 40-man roster, but Black has reached Triple-A and the latter two have made it to the Double-A level. Baseball America currently lists Whisenhunt as the club’s #5 prospect, Black at #8 and Birdsong at #12.
There is a lot of potential in that group but very few sure things. Subtracting someone from the flock would be a risk, but Rosenthal frames it as something that might need to be considered in order to add young, athletic position players.
On the whole, the club’s defense wasn’t strong in 2023. Their collective -15 Defensive Runs Saved and -17.1 grade from Ultimate Zone Rating were both in the bottom third of the league. Outs Above Average was a bit more bullish, giving them a +15, but it’s perhaps worth pointing out that Thairo Estrada alone had a +20. Brandon Crawford, now a free agent, was second on the club with +6.
President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi stated at the start of the offseason that upgrading the outfield defense was a priority. Since then, the club signed one of the youngest free agents available in 25-year-old Jung Hoo Lee. Perhaps further outfield changes could be considered, with bat-first guys like Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger still in the mix for playing time.
Zaidi also said that Marco Luciano will have the chance to take over the shortstop position to replace Crawford, but then later said that they would still consider bringing in depth because “it makes sense for us to have some insurance.”
Generally speaking, finding young and athletic players in free agency is hard to do. Since it takes six years of service time to reach the open market, most players don’t get there until close to or after their 30th birthday. With the Giants looking to get younger and more athletic, it makes sense that they jumped at the chance to sign Lee, but he was a unique exception since he was coming over from the Korea Baseball Organization.
If the Giants are looking for another young player to help with their athleticism, free agency offers limited options. That’s particularly true of the shortstop position, where Tim Anderson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are some of the standouts. Teams like the Reds, Twins, Rays, Cardinals and Orioles have lots of position players and could be willing to make a deal, but they would all likely be looking for young and controllable pitching in return.
As with any potential trade scenarios, the chances of something getting done will ultimately depend on the offers coming the other way. It will also depend upon the other paths the Giants pursue. They have been connected to starting pitching upgrades, including reported interest in Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Yariel Rodríguez. They have also had some interest in free agent position players like Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger. There are still many moving pieces but it seems as though there’s a non-zero chance of them making some young and controllable pitchers available, which will surely intrigue many rival clubs around the league.
DarkSide830
Outside of Harrison I don’t see any of the others returning a lot in trade.
Balk
I’d be more than happy to not trade them. I think there’s great upside to Wisenhunt.
agnes gooch
Balk, I agree! Whisenhunt might be better than Harrison, keep him!
foppert2
Apparently Wisenhunt struggles with the curveball. The concern is he might be a two pitch guy. The evaluator telling me this seemed higher on Black. Unique action. Hard to pick up. Hitters look uncomfortable. Had him in the rotation in 24.
bag o ballz
Black is said by a lot of scouts to be better than both
foppert2
Poking the bear, little miss ?
Don’t worry, you won’t have to be true to type and report me again.
Balk
Is there any class to you at all 99amature?
agnes gooch
Black sounds like he is almost ready too! So exciting! Keep them all!
User 4223176798
Might be? Like in giving up seven home runs in 30+ innings? Let’s see what other teams really think of the prospects in the Giants’ system. Because the Giants have a recent history of producing great prospects – Schmitt, Matos, Harrison, Luciano. Yup. Numbers speak for themselves.
JoeBoe
Is that jealousy? Only one team has more championships since 2000 than the giants.
Snellzilla #7
Desperate failing flailing Farhan will probably trade both, for a guy he dfa’s by May
Snellzilla #7
@agnes cooch I agree with you, Black is looking good
DonOsbourne
I want to see the Giants develop some players before I start trading for their prospects.
User 4223176798
You might be waiting for a new regime for that to happen.
stubby66
I don’t know they might have enough for Burnes for Black, Harrison, Teng and others
MikeSadek3333
I also like Whisenhunt and Winn a bit, but dont disagree with you-however with some of the returns in deals so far this off season, the minor leaguers included leave a good deal to be desired—so its possible that MLB clubs value a number of these guys more than we as fans do—especially with the premium now put on younger guys coming up in systems–
onbase_plus_hugging
I think it’s great they’re putting everything on the table.
math
So far the only things on the table are words.
PattheBat
Whisenhunt, Birdsong and McCray for Noelvi. Leggoooo
DroppedThirdStrike
I feel like it’s a year too soon to trade any of these guys. Another year to develop and then trade for pieces that’ll help you compete.
Chuck from Uniontown
I could see the bucs moving Canaan Smith-Njigba and/or Ji Hwan-Bae to get some more pitching.
PattheBat
Imagine thinking someone wants those characters
Pete'sView
First of all, Yariel Rodriguez is a relief pitcher, not a starter. Tim Anderson’s defense was almost as bad as his offense in ’23. Why would the Giants be high on him? IKF, maybe, although I don’t know his defensive stats off the bat. But I like his speed and base stealing.
Still, I think Tommy Edman makes the most sense, where one of the Giants young arms plus (Matos ?) go to the Cardinals.
All the young Giant arms mentioned at the top of the post are pretty darn good. This is one place where the Giants are trading from strength.
Joel P
Edman isn’t available he’s the starting center fielder for the 2024 Cardinals. Perhaps mid season he’s trades but not yet. And the Cardinals are trying to win in 2024 they want win now pieces not young guys.
rdf922
EVERYONE is available.
Tommy Edman is currently slated to start in
CF. The Cards also have Dylan Carlson who could play there.
If the Giants want Edman, he can be had. I’m not up to date on the Giants young arms but Tommy is a valuable player. It would take a REALLY nice piece or two to get him but he is available.
Joel P
The Cardinals are trying to win in 2024. And they don’t need anything except a reliever or 2 at this point. Again mid season sure it’s possible but not before then.
Cardsfanatik redux
They need pitching depth. and if SF offers a top pitching prospect and a good reliever, it might happen. Tommy won’t be cheap though. They also have Scott knocking on the door for CF.
Joel P
Scott is knocking at the door that’s why I keep saying mid season. But he won’t be traded before that Edman is the starting center fielder and also the backup at shortstop. Winn has to prove he can hit a sub 500 OPS isn’t going to work he has to improve. And the Cardinals are loaded with pitching prospects at this point. They need to develop the ones they have they really don’t need more.
DonOsbourne
Agreed. I know Mo listed Tommy as an outfielder, but I think Winn still needs to win the SS job in Spring Training. Tommy could /should be the starting SS until Winn is really ready.
Joel P
Yeah I believe in Winn for sure but he has to earn the job and he really hasn’t yet. Assuming Winn learns to hit big league pitching and Scott earns a promotion and does the same sure Edman would possibly be available at that point but not before that.
agnes gooch
No no no Zaidi! Keep Harrison, Whisenhunt, Black, and Birdsong! Maybe maybe trade Winn or Beck in a package but otherwise keep them!
sf fan
Totally agree. It would be a big mistake if they trade good prospects. That’s what they did a few years ago and got them to this mess. Let the prospects play and develop. Some will make it, some won’t. The front office has to accept that it will take a few years to have a contender.
agnes gooch
I agree sf fan, I’m patient and would rather see our kids develop but most fans are impatient so Zaidi is under the gun unfortunately. Fingers crossed he keeps all the good ones and trades only the duds
Snellzilla #7
@agnes cooch it’s been 6 years, we’ve waited long enough. Fun watching Farhan fire Kapler to save his own skin, like the weasel that he is
SupremeBacon
I agree, keep them all. Counting 23 year old prospects as busts when they throw 30 innings in their rookie season makes zero sense. Schmitt, Luciano, Black, Matos, Winn, Harrison ARE this team’s future. They need to give them a chance.
Logan Webb had an ERA over 5 his first two years in the bigs, and is now one of the best pitchers. Schmitt had numbers similar to Crawford in his rookie season.
DO NOT trade the kids for unknowns, Farhan, let them play.
Pete'sView
Agnes — I don’t think Harrison is in play, but Giants would have to offer someone(s) meaningful to get Edman from St. Loo.
flyingblindsquirrel
Harrison, Whisenhunt, Birdsong and Black for Pete Alonso.
mattwild1
lol
27champyankees
The Giants have no need to trade young pitching. They’re not a few pieces away from being competitive.
The roster is huge pile of Ass.
This is a 4th place team that will not be relevant until they develop a really good young core
And Zaidi has been there 6 years and is incapable of building that young core. He’s not a talent evaluator. He’s an analyst. A Quant.
I mean , dude just spent 132 Million on a KBO bat. LOL
mattwild1
would rather spend 132 million on a KBO bat than 162 million on Carlos Rodon. LOL
luvochka
I think the problem has to be deeper in the organization than Zaidi, a lot of these same problems were going on before him. The amount of people the Giants walked away from who are contributing to playoff teams is absurd. For some reason this organization just can’t evaluate talent.
m34josh
Their current GM has only been on the job for one year, and the Giants actually gave the youngins a chance to play for once (last season.) Hopefully it’s the start of a new philosophy on how to develop guys
Chipsss
You couldn’t be more right. Even as a troll, you can see the giants and farhan for what they are
Snellzilla #7
That KBO signing will probably wind up being the worst AAA signing in franchise history
foppert2
Just pick the one that’s not going to be Zac Wheeler.
dubtastic
omg, I don’t even wanna be reminded of that terrible trade..quarter of a year for Beltran and the dude was injured half of the time
foppert2
Ha ha. Every time he pitches I think about it.
Ouch.
agnes gooch
Ditto foppert! Every single time he pitches I think about it! Why I don’t want a repeat!
User 4223176798
Stop being a pessimist. Not every prospect will be Wheeler. Stop with the loser mentality and move on. Baseball is a game of guts. No guts, no glory.
PattheBat
Wheeler was injured 70% of his time during his tenure with NY
m34josh
If only the Giants had given them Gary Brown like they wanted
5TUNT1N
Just had a hilarious conversation with an old friend and was laughing that it only took the giants 13 years to find a true center fielder. Brown was brought up while we were going through all the fill ins.
Pete'sView
The reason that trade was one of the worst in Giants history is NOT that Beltran didn’t produce (Because he did when healthy) it was because the Giants never made an offer to Carlos in the off season. If they weren’t planning on trying to re-sign him why would they trade a premium prospect like Wheeler? It never made sense.
PS—Beltran went on to have many very productive seasons after his short stint with the Giants.
Chuck from Uniontown
I’m not sure you’d get much more than that for some of the guys listed up there like Keaton Winn…
deGrom/Langford Texas Ranger
Would any Giants fans give up any of those guys for Ezequiel Duran straight up? If so, which ones?
JayRyder
Oh the Giants.
So I said SF was an Issue. And so happy Posey brought that up. On this site I was told it has nothing to do with it. And I said this for a while now. The City has a Reputation. Period. With Politics. The Crime. The Homeless. The Expense.
Homegrown is where they have to focus. Webb is Homegrown and loves it. I am from here the actual City, my whole life. Not I’m from the City and I’m actually from Sacramento.
And crazy to say, But the Giants are a scrappy upstart. And to be fair they always were. An Outlier Team that does well with Silicon Valley Money. Bay Area Money.
Farhan to me has great value. He turned a lot of players careers around. Mostly pitchers. He’s in charge of that and his value must be understood. But as the leader of an Organization ? Sabean had that leadership Mode. Kick A** get guys. Make trades. Wheel deal. Make it happen. Farhan seems to operate on fear, and safe low key signings. To me he is caught as a Former Moneyball A who operates on the Cheap, with big money market thinking. I think the Guy is a clash of interest in front office baseball. I think he’d be a good cog for sure. But I feel he won’t last much longer as the leader of Giants Baseball. Perhaps Posey ? But I haven’t given it much thought.
Catching the Dodgers is out of the question. Has been for awhile now. And they moved the fences in, so the heavy pitching vibe is gone. They really are in a mess here. And it starts with players and wins. I think Melvin will be good. And they have some pieces. Luck always plays a role. Who picked the Rangers ? I Did though. At least to be there close. Bochy is so good, the G’s for sure have egg on their face for letting him go for Kapler. What a downgrade on Hall of Fame Levels.
They are a long way off if you ask me. They remind me of the Cincinnati Reds who would finish 80-82 every year. Have talent would compete. But not much else. We’ll See. I could be wrong.
foppert2
Dear Diary……..
Chipsss
Bootlickers incoming to yell and whine at you lol.
Great post
5TUNT1N
Although I agree with some of what you said I do have a little issue, one thing was buster said that the city or perception of the city was a question that had come up throughout the free agent process he actually defended the city and said how he had just relocated his family back to the Bay Area and spoke highly in its defense. Again he did bring it up I agree with you there.
Also bochy has said multiple times after he left the giants as manager and stayed on as an advisor he has had multiple surgeries and medical procedures that he himself stated was not capable of managing another season when he left. He called in knbr like 2 days after winning the World Series in Texas and had a great interview and was typical bochy reminiscing about his sf championships while down playing his current rangers championship. Dudes class and clearly doesn’t have the same feelings towards the organization like Sabean did when he left for the Yankees.
bighiggy
Edman and matz plus 4 mil for 2 of the 4 young guys mentioned.
Suitcase Simpson
sounds like yamamoto rejected them
Jean Matrac
Why would they be open to trading young pitching if they knew they wouldn’t be signing their #1 pitching target?
astick
Reds match well and in this scenario. I think a deal gets done.
Cincyfan85
The Reds already have more than a handful of talented, young pitchers. I don’t think they’re a good fit at all. The Reds need a proven veteran pitcher for the front of the rotation or at least a guy who is solid and provides innings. Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, Graham Ashcraft, Andrew Abbott, Brandon Williamson, Connor Phillips, Rhett Lowder, and Chase Petty.
Central Valley
Trade for who exactly?
Don’t mortgage the future and trade your cheap, controllable young arms, only to chase the 3rd Wild Card spot.
foppert2
The NL 3rd wild card spot is just made it to the World Series.
BarryBongs
Giants about to pay Pete Alonso at least $330 mil next year
Goin' to Sheetz
They match up well with the Reds and Orioles. The trouble is those two teams would be looking for a guy like Webb, not Winn.
DanUgglasRing
Prospects are exactly that. Prospects. They have skill they have promise and only a few of them actually pan out. Trade some guys and get known commodities. Cease, Burnes, whatever it takes. Personally I think they need to sell out for Yamamoto plus Snell Montgomery or a trade guy. If you can’t get hitters to come then build an impenetrable rotation to the best of your ability.
HBRC1987
Huh?
norcalblue
If the Giants don’t sign Yamamoto, there are two players Farhan will aggressively pursue in a trade: Luis Robert and Fernando Tatis Jr.
HBan22
Trading Harrison would be a mistake. Whisenhunt, Black and Birdsong all look to have some pretty good upside and could all be ready by the end of 2024. If they’re going to trade away any of them, they need to make it count.
HummBaby
That’s a who’s who of 90’s baby names.
Kyle, Carson, Tristan, Keaton, Mason, Hayden and Logan.
HBRC1987
Not really
User 4223176798
There are no guarantees with prospects. A very high majority will fizzle at the big league level. If the trade value is high for Harrison and you can get a known Major Leaguer such as Robert, Tatis, Burnes — you have to go for it. How many prospects have the Dodgers traded over the years and yet they continue to develop more. We need a better formula and front office because the currents guys are not working.
HBan22
Harrison has already showed (albeit in a very limited sample size) that he can pitch at the MLB level. He was arguably the top left handed pitching prospect in baseball this time last year and has ace-like upside if his control/command holds up. He’s the one out of them all that I really think you’d want to hold on to.
SFG.1
Trading any of these pitchers is a bad idea! They will not get anyone back that will put them in the WS next year! The Giants can potentially have the best pitching staff in all of baseball in a couple of years with these pitchers! They have to rind a different way to get position players or keep bringing them up through the farm system!
HBRC1987
Sign Snell and Yamamoto. Break the bank next year for Soto.
Nevrfolow
Sell Harrison before it’s too late. We have no problem signing pitchers from free agency. If Kyle can get us an impact bat, make the move.
Humm bumms
Pay Yamamoto whatever is required, then get Edman or Chapman
