Dodgers, Rays Discussing Deal Involving Tyler Glasnow, Manuel Margot

By Steve Adams | December 14, 2023 at 6:35pm CDT

December 14: Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports today that the two sides are still discussing a trade. He says that “word is” the Dodgers “may also be” interested in an extension. It’s unclear what level of interest Glasnow has in an extension.

December 13, 1:00pm: No trade between the two parties is imminent, per Jack Harris of the L.A. Times. While Harris also hears this framework is being discussed, he further reports that the Dodgers aren’t the only team in “serious” trade talks with the Rays regarding Glasnow.

11:50am: While Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena has created some speculation by posting a picture of himself and Shohei Ohtani from the 2023 World Baseball Classic on Instagram, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Arozarena is not a part of the talks regarding Glasnow and Margot.

8:27am: The Dodgers and Rays are in talks on a trade that would send right-hander Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Manuel Margot from Tampa Bay to Los Angeles in exchange for Ryan Pepiot and outfielder Jonny Deluca, as first reported by Jack Azoulay-Haron of MLB Nerds and Bruce Kuntz of Dodgers Digest. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic hears the same, cautioning that the deal is not complete and changes to the framework remain possible.

The 30-year-old Glasnow has been one of the most highly rumored trade candidates of the offseason, due both to his considerable $25MM salary for the upcoming season and his proximity to free agency. He’s entering the final year of his contract and will hit the open market next winter. MLBTR ranked Glasnow fifth on our early offseason list of the game’s Top 25 trade candidates.

Glasnow is a natural target for the deep-pocketed Dodgers, who have a pronounced need for starting pitching and who won’t bat an eye at the Tampa Bay ace’s salary. As it stands, the rotation in Los Angeles consists of Pepiot, Walker Buehler, Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan, with the fifth spot up in the air. (Ryan Yarbrough, Michael Grove and Gavin Stone are among the in-house options.) Buehler will be on an innings count in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery (the second TJS of his career). None of Pepiot, Miller or Sheehan have made more than 22 big league starts.

The Dodgers’ rotation has been ravaged by injuries in the past calendar year. Longtime ace and current free agent Clayton Kershaw may still re-sign with the club, but he had shoulder surgery after the 2023 season and is out until at least midsummer — if not longer. Tony Gonsolin had Tommy John surgery in August. Dustin May underwent a Tommy John revision and flexor surgery just after the All-Star break.

While Glasnow is far from a paragon of durability, he’s unquestionably a top-of-the-rotation arm when healthy. Last year’s 120 innings were actually a career-high for the 6’8″ righty, and the 2023 season was only his second in which he reached even 100 frames at the MLB level. Glasnow did make a full slate of starts during the shortened 2020 season, but last year’s 21 trips to the mound were still a career-high. He’s spent considerable time in his big league career on the injured list owing to Tommy John surgery, a separate forearm strain and a severe oblique strain, among other maladies.

Originally a fifth-round pick by the Pirates, Glasnow was a longtime top prospect in Pittsburgh but never quite put things together for the Bucs, struggling in an up-and-down tenure before ultimately being traded to the Rays alongside Austin Meadows and Shane Baz in the lopsided trade that sent Chris Archer from Tampa Bay to Pittsburgh. Like so many other pitchers, Glasnow broke out under the Rays’ pitching development and analytics program. In parts of six seasons with Tampa Bay, he’s pitched to a 3.20 ERA while punching out a whopping 34.1% of his opponents against a tidy 7.8% walk rate. He’s typically worked with above-average ground ball rates and turned in a career-best 51.2% grounder mark this past season.

Margot, too, can become a free agent following the 2024 season — though the Rays (or an acquiring team) also hold a $12MM club option with a $2MM buyout for the 2025 season. He’s set to earn $10MM in 2024, bringing the total guarantee remaining on his deal to $12MM.

The .264/.310/.376 batting line that the 29-year-old Margot posted in 336 plate appearances in 2023 was about seven percent below average, by measure of wRC+ (93), but it was also right in line with the larger .264/.317/.375 output he’s turned in during parts of four seasons with the Rays. Generally speaking, slightly below-average offense from Margot has been an acceptable trade-off for his sensational defense and solid value on the basepaths.

That wasn’t necessarily the case in 2023, however. Margot missed the majority of the 2022 season with a significant strain of the patellar tendon in his right knee, and his defensive grades in 2023 slipped closer to average. Statcast indicates that Margot’s range in the outfield and overall sprint speed both declined in ’23, which isn’t particularly surprising to hear for a player who was in his first  season back from a major knee injury. If he’s closer to his pre-injury form, he could return to his status as a plus all-around contributor, but there’s no certainty of that happening.

A healthy Margot would be an excellent fit for the Dodgers’ roster. Los Angeles re-signed Jason Heyward to handle the bulk of the time in right field — Mookie Betts has already been announced as their primary second baseman next year — but Heyward will be strictly platooned. Margot’s right-handed bat has produced a career .281/.341/.420 output against left-handed pitching. He’s a strong fit at the plate, and if his defense can rebound to prior levels, the Dodgers probably feel they wouldn’t be losing much defensive value in swapping out Heyward for Margot against left-handed pitching. Margot could also be a late-game defensive replacement for Chris Taylor in left, and he’s good insurance in center field, should James Outman sustain an injury at any point.

As for the players reportedly being targeted by Tampa Bay, Pepiot is exactly what the Rays typically covet: an MLB-ready player with five seasons of club control who can step directly onto the roster in place of a star-caliber player being traded elsewhere. The 26-year-old righty has started 10 games and made seven relief appearances for the Dodgers since his MLB debut in 2022, pitching to a sharp 2.76 ERA in 78 1/3 innings — albeit with some more concerning underlying numbers.

Pepiot’s 25.1% strikeout rate is better than average, but his 10% walk rate is also higher than the league average and he’s been quite homer-prone (1.49 HR/9). He’s been fortunate that the majority of those long balls have come with the bases empty, but an extreme fly-ball pitcher who’s susceptible to homers inherently carries some risk. Fielding-independent metrics like FIP (4.76) and SIERA (4.15) are more bearish than Pepiot’s more rudimentary earned run average.

Pepiot works off a three-pitch mix — fastball, changeup, slider — sitting 94 mph with his heater and neutralizing lefties with a plus changeup. His slider has generated good results thus far in the big leagues, but scouting reports from his prospect days have characterized that offering as a bit below average, giving him the feel of a two-pitch righty who’s lacking a third solid offering. Pepiot doesn’t come with the same type of durability concerns as Glasnow, having pitched 128 1/3 innings in 2022 and never hitting the IL with a major arm injury. However, like Glasnow, he missed multiple months after opening the 2023 season on the shelf with a significant oblique strain.

Baseball America ranked Pepiot as high as the No. 55 prospect in the game earlier in 2023, noting that he’s improved upon that once below-average slider but done so at the expense of some of his changeup’s efficacy. Pepiot’s sub-par command also lends itself to deep counts and long innings, with BA’s scouting report noting that he often struggles to pitch beyond the fifth inning. That’s not a huge issue for either the Rays or the Dodgers; both clubs typically have deep bullpens and don’t shy away from five-and-dive starters who face a lineup only two times.

Pepiot is controllable for another five years and won’t even be arbitration-eligible until the 2025-26 offseason, which surely adds to his appeal for the Rays. Swapping him out for Glasnow is probably a step down in terms of per-inning quality, but Pepiot would give them an option in 2025 and beyond, when the Rays will have Jeffrey Springs, Drew Rasmussen and Shane McClanahan all returning from major arm surgeries.

At the same time, swapping out Glasnow for a league-minimum starter (and perhaps shedding some or all of Margot’s remaining money) would give the Rays the necessary financial room to add free-agent starter (or trade acquisition with a mid-range salary) for the upcoming 2024 season. As it stands, the Rays have Glasnow, Zach Eflin, Aaron Civale, former top prospect Taj Bradley (who struggled through his 2023 rookie showing) and reliever-turned-starter Zack Littell in the projected rotation.

Not to be forgotten in all of this, the 25-year-old Deluca is coming off a solid debut effort of his own. He’s controllable for another six seasons and would give the Rays a right-handed bat who can play all three outfield spots — similar to the more established Margot. Deluca tallied just 45 plate appearances in last season’s MLB debut but posted a respectable .262/.311/.429 batting line in that time. He also turned in a combined .294/.390/.566 slash between Double-A and Triple-A.

It’s gaudy production, though scouting reports at Baseball America and FanGraphs note that the former switch-hitter is still working to adjust to right-on-right scenarios and currently feels like more of a platoon option. FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen grades Deluca as a below-average center fielder but solid corner option. Deluca is a former baseball and track star with excellent athleticism who could at least profile as a matchup-based option across all three outfield spots, which is a skill set the Rays have utilized with great regularity in the past. He also has two minor league option years remaining, which only further enhances his appeal.

While it seems there are still some hurdles yet to be cleared, there’s some logic to the trade for both sides. The Dodgers would be swapping out a pair of controllable but unproven players for a high-end rotation upgrade and one or two years of an established right-handed platoon partner for Heyward — one who’s likely more capable of handling center field than the young outfielder with whom they’d be parting. Glasnow is an easy qualifying offer candidate next winter, so L.A. could receive some modest compensation if he departs. He’s also an L.A.-area native who’s signed one extension in the past, so the chance of a second multi-year deal to extend their control seems feasible.

The Rays, meanwhile, would turn two short-term assets into immediate MLB help that can be controlled all the way through 2028-29, freeing up money for short-term 2024 help and possibly adding Pepiot to a 2025 rotation group including McClanahan, Baz, Eflin, Civale and Bradley. It’s the type of swap that both teams have been frequently willing to make — typically with good success, which helps both achieve their status as perennial contenders (albeit via dramatically different methodologies).

Idk, I’m a Braves fan, and I still don’t necessarily “hate” the Dodgers.

Honestly, last season, I actually felt bad for them. Now, they had multiple rotation injuries before the playoffs, but, as a Braves fan, I sympathized with the fact of having one of the best teams, except never knowing what could have happened because your best pitchers were hurt.

Dustin May, Walker Buehler, Gonsolin, etc., etc. I’ve never seen so much pitching talent on an IL before.

If the Dodgers were 100% healthy, with a rotation consisting of Buehler, Glasnow, May, Miller, and Gonsolin, and even Sheehan would BY FAR and away be the best in baseball. It isn’t even close. Now, you could argue would they even go after Glasnow if their guys were healthy? Well, they’d want to replace Kershaw anyways as one of their more experienced pitchers, so Glasnow would still fit. Plus, let’s be honest, having too much talent has never stopped the Dodgers before..lol

Now, even without May and Gonsolin, and adding in Sheehan, Glasnow, or adding Kershaw midway through the season, that’s still an extremely formidable rotation. With their bats that’s all they really need to be competitive enough to either win their division or make a playoff run.

It actually described how long-term values do not equal present-day values.

Here’s an honest question, what happens if in 10 years, the Dodgers decide to buy out that contract?
          ==================================
That can be done any way they want. For example, the contract could stipulate that, if the LAD fails to make the payments, Ohtani owns the Dodgers.

But more realistically, the contract should stipulate that that the annual salary deferment should go into a custodian account.

But just for fun, and not keeping to the penny, he earns $46M/year and gets paid $2M, which creates a liability for the Dodgers of $44M. Now, just hazard a guess at what $44M will be worth in ten years at 4.43% a year? $68M. That, plus the $2M already paid, will equal the $70M obligation.

Joe – How come you never mentioned any of this when Devers signed?? It’s the EXACT SAME SCENARIO, a 10-year contract starting in 2024 that is heavily deferred from 2034-2043.

The only difference is a few less dollars and it was an extension instead of a free agent signing and Devers is deferring a much smaller percentage.

This is true, but the Yankees were winning a lot of World Series titles during the “Evil Empire” days, which is what I was comparing the current times to, not the Yankees of today. People definitely resent the Dodgers much more than the Yankees in the current scheme of things. Ohtani’s just gonna have to get used to it… he is no longer a Jedi, he is working on the Death Star.

A lot of it has to do with the signing of multiple free agents and poaching them from other teams. The Astros success has revolved around mostly their own players, so it hits different.

@Hurricane Sandy: “Poaching them from other teams” is a misconception.

When a player becomes a free agent, he has already left his previous team, which in turn no longer contractually controls the player.

When said player signs with a new team, it’s a combination of his previous team’s choice not to re-sign him and his choice not to return if the team offers him the opportunity, as well as his choice of where to sign.

So calling it poaching is illogical.

Poaching is what is going on in the NCAA College Football Transfer Portal! There are plenty of players not under a contract with any particular team but have made commitments to teams to play for them in the near future! However, with the NIL there are players getting money from teams they are currently committed to, BUT they are getting better offers from other teams boosters for more NIL money! So the players get into the Transfer Portal, and this is where you find the “POACHERS”! They go after players already committed to teams with intentions of more or less poaching, (STEALING!),(with money of course!) these players from committed teams to Transfer out to come play for their team! THAT IS A POACHING! Mostly Coaches represented by boosters, since the coaches can’t actually pay College Kids to play! Anyway, there you go!

chief: When a team wins year after year after year like the Dodgers (11 straight NLW titles), there’s going to be a certain amount of hatred and jealousy. It always seems to be aimed at the Dodgers and Yankees, but not the Braves. I think AA is a genius the way he trades for players he doesn’t need (Stassi) just to flip them for players he does need. He doesn’t just sign big name players and try to fit them in some place later (except maybe Murphy). Unless you’re a fan of the Phillies or the rest of the division, I don’t think fans hate the Braves nearly as much as they do the nyy and LAD.

I’m a Mets fan and even I don’t put the Braves in the same class as the Dodgers.. yes, they have been my nightmare for most of the last 25 years, but is more of a respected adversary thing where you have no choice but to bow to your opponent for defeating you in a noble battle. The Dodgers are that current “it” team that attracts all of the stars and assimilates other franchises star players, so they get more “hate”.

Honestly, as a Phillies fan, I don’t hate the Braves anywhere near ass much as the Mets. The Braves built it, the Mets tried to buy it. Plus Atlanta folk are nowhere near as annoying as NY folk (it’s a Northeast thing, and I know it goes back at Philly fans too).

Also helps that the last two postseasons haven’t exactly gone in the Braves’ favor.

@kje76: Not for nothing, but a whole lot of the Mets core is homegrown: Alonso, Nimmo, McNeil, Alvarez, Baty/Vientos (who hopefully will amount to something). And their rotation was pretty stacked with homegrown studs until recently. Plus Philly’s been pretty successful the last couple years buying their way to the top (Wheeler!)

Most of the Mets fans I know can’t stand the Phillies, but they don’t really bother me all that much to be honest. Believe it or not even that brief period of time when the Nats were our rivals, I think I disliked them more than the Phils. Dodgers were a team I just never liked for some reason, even before they became what they are today. Must be genetics passed on from my grandfather, who watched them skip town.

@Dotnet22 I don’t find anything to be hated in the Dodgers. They’ve made some great moves, they seek to add stars, they’ve given us some great baseball, they plow revenue back into the team, and there’s also a distinct pathos to them in how despite all the effort and expense they haven’t been able to win a full season World Series since 1988.

Dotnet22: It will be a long time before anyone replaces the Yankees as the most hated team in bb. You could hate the Dodgers for signing Ohtani for an amount that shouldn’t concern the fans because we’re not paying it. If your team had signed Ohtani, then been linked to Yamamoto and Glasnow because your pitching staff is down to the bare bones, would you hate your team for doing it? I wish my team would do that, but it’s the White Sox and, well, you know…

Sounds exactly like what Yankees fans used to say to everyone. I understand the Dodgers are a smart organization and free agents aren’t the only reason they are successful, but when people think of the Dodgers now they think Betts, Freeman, Ohtani… and still have their name attached to every major free agent out there. I don’t hate-hate the Dodgers like I did the Yanks back in the day, but they’re definitely that team I don’t want to see succeed more than any other right now, and I think the masses feel the same way. The tides have turned. You guys should be used to it already with the Lakers, I don’t know why you’re taking this so hard lol.

Dodgers are not the villains here. They are a symptom of a greater problem related to disparity of wealth in the country. The Ohtani incident just reminds us of the how uneven things are. LA just adroitly used the rules they had to work with. Maybe the rules need to be changed.

The real villain is Manfred, who should have used his power to veto that trade as not in the interests of baseball. This was the ability to defer money taken to the obscene degree.

But Manfred changed the rules to allow Ohtani to stay in a game as DH when he leaves as a P. The two way qualifications and not be able to use position players as pitchers except in a blowout make it extremely hard for anyone else to qualify as a two way player.

I’d say their pretty equally hated. Collectively it’s been 49 years since either team was world series championship. Technically the Dodgers won in 2020 but it was a full 162 game grind. So there’s a asterisk next to the Dodgers 2020 championship*. As likeable as Ohtani is I hope the Dodgers never even goes the world series in the next 10 years.

Glad the Cubs are out. I’d rather Hoyer dealt with Cleveland and talked about Clase, Bieber and Naylor and got some super deal done than what Glasnow was going cost both Prospect wise and Money wise. Counsell loves his bullpen and if Hader and Clase joined Alzolay and Little it would be a powerhouse bullpen. Even if the Cubs just got Clase and Naylor They could leave Bieber behind and just sign a FA starter who doesn’t cost a draft pick or cost big time prospects. Bieber isn’t worth high end prospects right now. Counsell has always had a big time closer. If he has any input Hader could be the guy.

Either one of those would be great, but not both. I don’t think the Spiders are going to trade Naylor, who I have to say is by far the ugliest man in bb.

I think Clase is more of an 8th inning guy with Little and Alzolay in the 7th. They might have to move Alzolay in the package to get him. Hader would be the prize and Counsell knows him well. Everybody says Hader is going to the Rangers but I wouldn’t count the Cubs out yet. If the Cubs can sign Hoskins then Naylor isn’t needed anyway and he would just cost money. I don’t think Jed has much interest in Bieber unless it’s a last man standing thing. My perfect off season for the Cubs would be Bellinger, Hoskins, Hader, Imanaga and trade for Clase. keep the prospects. The Cubs seem content to roll with Morel at 3rd and if they have to trade a couple of pitchers to get Clase it would be fine IMO. But that’s a lot of ifs.

To be fair, they don’t have much of a rotation. Their only two starters that are set are Buehler coming off major injury and Bobby Miller, who is only in his second year. Everyone else is either injured or hasn’t pitched a full season yet.

but those spare parts look really nice. Stone, Pepitot, Gonsolin, et al…. that is a group that most teams would love as their core of young starter arms.

Glasnow also makes sense as a bridge. he is on a 1 year deal, Ohtani is not pitching next season (i have my doubts if he is a starter ever again), so this would give you your ace going into next year, and ohtani takes over the following year..

The dodgers also have a wealth of MLB ready hitters with nowhere to go- the rumored guy here is an example, but Pages is the other example.

I am also praying as an Os fan that they are the other team involved in discussions- Joey Ortiz is a good headliner, but they can really only offer hitting prospects (so no easy comp for Pepiot).. but an Ortiz and Norby offer has similar value.

dodgers prospects are perennially overvalued, I’m not saying they don’t have any good prospects bc they do, but the reason they have so much trade power is bc everyone gives their prospects high rankings every year when prospect rankings are notoriously a crap shoot. Follow their supposed can’t miss prospects on other teams once they are traded and you will see plenty of misses. It’s not an exact science for sure.

I don’t disagree they are overvalued. By the law of averages, one of Frasso, Stone, or Ryan will be good is what I’m saying. And your same thought also applies to Pepiot. Sure he pitched well in a short 42 inning sample size, but now teams have tape on him…it is much more likely Pepiot gets blown up in his 2nd year (not saying he will have a bad career, just typical sophomore slump) than Glasnow is not available for the playoffs, and they can ill afford to trust him over Glasnow when you are in a win now mode.

Factor in Buhler, May and Gonsolin along with Sheehan, Miller, Grove.

At this point their OF prospects (Pages and Deluca) are simply blocked. I do not think anyone sees future All star in either of them- they see future solid big league player. Pages upside feels like Santander to me- good player, but not a superstar.

Pepiot is not on the same level as Stone. he will be figured out- i think the book on him is mid to late rotation player. So ERA in the 4ish range when all is said and done. He may pop to be more, but that is the realistic upside (and if you are trading for him, likely what you see him as). Stone has more upside as actual mid rotation arm (ERA plus in the 110 range)

(2) He’s had 1 injury that the Rays asked him to rest every year instead of getting the surgery to fix the issue so he could pitch in the postseason of those years. He’s now had the surgery and pitched the most IP of his career (and the most the Rays wanted him to pitch in his first year back from TJS). Don’t focus on the past, focus on the future. He did as the Rays asked and helped the team on the field when it mattered most – the postseason. Had he undergone TJS when the injury first occurred he probably would have played the past 3 years without incident and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

You just signed one of the greatest hitters of all time to a record deal, and have another $450 million invested in Betts and Freeman, and you’re going to sit around and wait for Ryan effing Pepiot to develop into an ace pitcher instead of going out and getting the best starters right now? By the time he is hopefully a top pitcher on Glasnow’s level (which is not likely), Freeman will be retired and Mookie will be 35 years old.

The Dodgers won in 2020 with their core players (Kershaw, Bellinger, Buehler, etc.). Betts was the only big ticket free agent.

Time and again we see teams win with a core. The Rangers somewhat bucked that trend last year, but for the most part, from the 2016 Cubs to the 2021 Braves, it’s about the core.

So the Dodgers can sign whomever they want, but it doesn’t change the fact that they have Miguel Rojas and “he is going back to 2B?” Mookie Betts up the middle with a Chris Taylor CF kicker. And oh by the way, Shohei is clogging the DH spot so that means Max Muncy has to play in the field. Angel fans remember that fun with Albert Pujols at 1B.

He mean all in on Yamamoto

Soto made no sense as he is rental and was going FA short of getting ohtani money in extension and that the padres and mets dont line up as most of their top prospects are middle infielders and they have what 4 SS tied to long term deals

          Ohtani was going west coast

Glasnow is similar to Soto as he is rental and doesnt make sense for a rebuild/see prospects type year. Also next year has more options for pitching currently. Unless you feel good about an extension or get an window to discuss extension.

Yamamoto is the only one that really makes sense since it costs nothing but money.

The Dodgers have always needed two frontline starters this offseason. And given their glut of tradable prospects, one was always going to come via a deal.

Which means the other one will come from free agency.

So…guessing it doesn’t mean what you think it means……

      Margot is nothing & Glasnow is another injury waiting to happen. If Friedman really wants Glasnow, & T.B. wants Pepiot, the deal has to include Arozarena. My proposal would be;
pitchers Michael Grove, Landon Knack, Yency Almonte & outfielder Johnny Deluca or Andy Pages’ & infielder Austin Gauthier for Glasnow & Arozarena. 5 for 2.

SoxProspect – Again…, the story on Glasnow being injury prone isn’t real. Same injury every year that the Rays asked him to rest (not repair via surgery) so he could pitch in the post-season. It worked until it didn’t, and then he got surgery. But 3 years of injuries are really just 1 recurring injury that needed TJS to fix. As for Glasnow being expensive, well that’s just the market. Everyone wants an Ace but there isn’t enough to go around. Gotta pay to play. It is funny to think that some Cardinals fans were saying O’Neill for Glas straight up was fair. O’Neil was basically given away and Glas is fetching a high quality, former top 100 pitching prospect who looked damn good last year (plus DeLuca). No one should be surprised by this. Even if the Rays throw in $5-10MM, this is a great return for Glas/Margot.

he never said injury prone but if you want to play semantics. He has not been physically available to pitch more than 120 innings a year over 8 different years does not bode well. And this was the first year he made it 20 games as a starter. The only time he played more than 20 games other than this year was when they had him as a reliever before he got traded and put him back as a starter.

Well, as I said, he missed parts of two years resting an injury that required TJS to really fix. That allowed him to pitch in the post-season those years, but it just delayed the inevitable. Then he missed 1.5 years rehabbing TJS and last year he pitched the most innings of his career and the most allowed by his rehab management. You can take this however you want, but I think Glas is going to be dominant next year.

Lmao, are you people serious? The Dodgers should be given Arozorena AND Glasnow for the #154 ranked starting pitcher according to Fangraphs?? The Dodgers are already allowed to acquire talent on a different level than everyone else, The other teams shouldn’t have to just gift them more top players. It doesn’t matter that Glasnow has one year left on his deal, he is infinitely better than Pepiot by any advanced metrics. If the Dodgers want to have a competitive playoff rotation next year, they are going to have to trade Pepiot at some point in the next few months. A team that has the three of the best hitters in the game in their prime should not be messing around risking their playoff hopes on an injury prone/young rotation.

Extra wild card spots and a balanced schedule with interleague play make divisions less relevant already, so rezoning isn’t really necessary. SD and SF have the same state (CA) high tax rates that LAD has, which seems fair, that’s prompting these deferrals. Only thing is, LAD beat the others to the punch.

I doubt they cared if it was a few million dollars but 68 million and 680 million total yeah I doubt California lets that slip away without trying to get their hands on taxable portions. Wouldnt be surprised to see adjustments to taxes being made in next decade in CA

Not so much crickets they were just spending money they thought they would have 10 years down the road and unless something changes, they will be a mid-tier spending team now and in the future it looks like. The cash cow contract with the RSN has left town along with that 20 year contract went up in smoke. Wait till they have to start trading Tatis, Machado, Bogarts, to meet their lower payroll that will be at the 130 to 140 limit.

Tampa is extremely smart. Trade your less controlled, higher paid players, for top 100 prospects from the Dodgers who are rushed to the Majors, reducing Dodgers strength from homegrown, and adding to Ray’s ability to just get to WS to face them. Pepiot if true on 5 seasons control, should be considered a AAA/AA option to work on his control while getting back that 6th yr control(super 2) having been rushed. Then Ray’s can trade him that 5th/6th yr to Dodgers rinse repeat.

Rushed prospects? Deluca and Pepiot are older than Juan Soto. Now you can say they’re blocked and wasting away in AAA, but it’s ridiculous to say they were rushed.

Pepiot as a (SP) is rushed. He’d clearly be the headliner in the deal. Did you read the article putting a solid diss on Pepiot? The Ray’s can turn him in to a viable SP worth more than the Dodgers likely can because how they rushed his progress, team control, and likely overusing him the next few seasons should he remain on them. Pepiot can’t start a full season, so he’s going to be yanked bullpen-starter, swing-bullpen with them. Tampa can put him in minors, pitch 2-3 innings build up to 5 and insert him back on the team with that style where skip starts or just pitch 1inning start and keep a 5 day period.stretch him to 130IP in a perfect world(4 IP avg 32Starts)

The Dodgers develop prospects similarity to the Rays since their GM came from the Rays. To say they rush prospects under Freidman is just a ridiculous and false statement They are probably one of the most conservative teams in the sport when it comes to graduating prospects. As I said, the two prospects rumored to come over in this deal are in their mid 20s. The only reason they aren’t established big leaguers are due to them being blocked.

You and I have different forms of what rushed means. College drafted players are never going considered rushed due to their age which you’re stuck on. I’m calling rushed on Pepiot due to development and how he fits a season long roster. Hitters by the age of 21 none of them are rushed. You can option them, they play daily, going from 400PSd to a 700PAs season, isn’t taxing like asking a SP to go from career high 110 IP to 185 IP as a starter the next season. Keeping the pitcher down in minors 1 season and starting from 135-140 IP and asking them to pitch 170-180 the following season is worth far more important to me as a fan of small market club vs a large market club. Dodgers could extend Pepiot 15years today if they put the right number to his ear. Tampa or Milw aren’t doing it. The reason for LA to move Pepiot is because he’s rushed, and without drastic managing his season, will not be on a playoff mound pitching over 4 innings in 2024 even if he’s the best SP LA has in 24 statically.

See comment above. Hey if you want him only as a relief pitcher? He’s not rushed. You can pitch him as a 3.2 inning starter pitcher for 30+ starts at the ML level hoping his arm holds up is what is rushed. His limitation is 24 solid starts otherwise which doesn’t get him through the playoffs. That workload getting there likely tires his arm when Sept comes to need to sit or be injured due to it.

Right. The answer is stop making so much money by allowing so many teams in baseball and retract to 16 teams who would all have fantastic players due to roster crunch of the other half of the poor franchises. Those teams can have 500M payrolls supporting each other(more?) 162games of revenue is what separates these markets large to small. It’s not 17 games like NFL. 81 in NBA. Etc.

The Dodgers are taking a pretty good gamble on this supposed trade, they take on a 25mil contract of a pitcher with a history of arm trouble, and a outfielder who would be a 4th outfielder who is signed for 1 year plus a option for 25 season. They give up a promising starter who has 100 innings in the ML.and another prospect. Read some articles this morning that if this deal goes down as is they give the Dodgers a B- and give the Rays a B+, so it sounds like a wash neither team would make out the better for it. Except the Rays get out from around 37 mil in contracts and they would have control of the two players they would acquire till 2028-29 seasons.

This would be a quality move for the Dodgers. Losing a controllable arm would hurt, but gaining a potential ace even for only 1 year is a fair trade. Next year at this time May, Buehler, Gonsolin, and Ohtani will make up 80% of the rotation. The Dodgers could also offer Glasnow a QO I think as well which would recoup some value once Glasnow left in free agency.

I don’t complete disagree, he’s almost certainly an ace, and his injuries in 2018 IIRC were related to his eventual TJS, which is the worst thing in his injury history so far. There’s a reasonable chance that going forward he will be able to pitch more than he has so far in the majors. He got to 120 innings this year and his stuff was intact, so there’s a good chance he’s a legit ace in 2024, but I wouldn’t say he’s ‘not injury prone’, it’s just probably not as dire as some people would think looking over his stat pages. If his stuff was down the way say, Noah Syndergaard’s stuff was down after he returned, I’d be more concerned.

Personally I think there’s a reasonable chance his issues were addressed by Tommy John. A lot of his issues were forearm/elbow related and hopefully addressed by the surgery. I wouldn’t assume he’s another Brett Anderson just yet.

Not a bad player return for the Rays as long as the Dodgers pay all Glasnow and Margot salaries. I figure the Dodgers will just defer it for 100 years.

Those of you who keep crying about the dodgers should direct your anger towards the owner(s) of your own team. All the dodgers are doing is putting a good product on the field. It’s not their fault that other teams aren’t doing the same.

They should direct their anger towards the MLBPA, the owners on the last CBA wanted a limit on deferred money, the MLBPA did not.
Don’t hate the players, hate the game… well, except the players made the game this time.

I actually think it’s absurd to hate on the Dodgers for legally cheating, when Ohtani will undoubtedly never live up to his contract. Don’t get me wrong, Ohtani is great and will be an MVP type player, but I just don’t think it’s reasonable to expect him to be a 2 way player for even half of his 10 year contract. The last 3 or 4 years he will be what Pujols was to the Angels

Hope that this deal falls apart. I know Friedman is fixated on Ray players and doesn’t like to lose prospects but given Glasnow’s steep $25mm salary and injury history it should be a hard pass on him. Doesn’t cost a lot of prospects but still would rather pursue Yamamoto, Burnes and Cease over Glasnow.

$37 million in salary for Glasnow and his 20 starts and a sub-putrid Margot?

Friedman is going from the penthouse to the outhouse in less than a week in terms of great and pathetic decisions…

Margot was a platoon outfielder (the short side batting right handed) for the Rays. For them to get the Dodgers to take his salary off their hands was likely the price they had to pay to get Glasnow. If the Dodgers get 160 innings out of Glasnow they should count their lucky stars.

Yup, Margot seems like a waste of a roster spot and just added to lower the ask for Glasnow. They need an OF RH bat, but Taylor’s bat is better. Need a more impactful bat or don’t add one if it’s not an upgrade.

If the point is having a better SP rotation come playoff time what’s the point of adding Glasnow if there is a good chance he doesn’t make it by then. The one knock on Friedman is his disregard in acquiring injury prone players.

I think the author made a mistake on the Rays rotation. I’m thinking Baz would be the starter over Bradley as it was clear last season that Bradley needs more time in the minors. I’m excited about Baz as I think he has ace stuff and could make the parting of Glasnow easier (assuming he comes back healthy).

They’ll battle it out in ST (along with Pepiot) and the best arm(s) will win. Baz only has like 20 IP in the Majors and hasn’t pitched in about 2 years, so nothing is going to be handed to him (or Bradley or Pepiot for that matter).

Margot must be a salary dump by the Rays. I get that the Dodgers need a platoon RH OF bat but surely they will seek to do better than this. I’d rather see Deluca in this role over Margot. Margot could be just DFAed after the deal.

Don’t like the trade as a LAD fan, Giving away a lot of controllable years at both SP and OF for a SP that can’t counted on and an OF not worth his salary..

Pepiot took the mound 8 times and gave up more than 2 runs just once. Not sure how much lift Glasnow is going to give them.

Margot is maybe slightly better as a platoon partner with Heyward, but more likely a salary dump by Rays to lower prospect cost. Prefer the lower cost DeLuca as a 4th OF.
