Hazen: Diamondbacks Looking To Add Another Bat

By Nick Deeds | December 23, 2023 at 4:26pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have had a fairly busy offseason in the aftermath of their surprising playoff run that saw them reach the Fall Classic for the first time since the club’s lone championship in 2001. The club made a big addition to its rotation via free agency by landing left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on a four-year pact and just recently brought back outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on a three-year deal. On the trade market, meanwhile, Arizona landed third baseman Eugenio Suarez in a deal with the Mariners, adding a power bat to the club’s infield mix. The additions of Gurriel and Suarez both add some balance to Arizona’s lineup, which is largely dominated by lefty and switch-hitters outside of first baseman Christian Walker.

Even after those major acquisitions, Arizona does not appear ready to call it an offseason just yet. As noted by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, GM Mike Hazen indicated during Gurriel’s introductory press conference yesterday that the heavy lifting of the club’s offseason is not yet done.

“I feel like we’ve certainly added to our team. I think our team on paper, starting out next season, is going to be in a very similar, if not slightly better, position than we started out 2023 with,” Hazen said, “That’s a decent starting point. I think the competitiveness within our division is going to require us to continue to upgrade the roster any way we can.”

Hazen went on to add that the club is looking to add another position player to the lineup, though he’s “not so sure” that the addition will have to hit from the right-hand side after the club’s acquisitions of Gurriel and Suarez. Hazen went on to suggest that the club is looking at more of an offensively oriented addition— hardly a surprise given the club’s lack of a clear starting option at DH.

The club’s willingness to consider left-handed hitters is a sensible change in tone given the additions of Gurriel and Suarez to the lineup. While Arizona’s 97 wRC+ (18th in the majors) as a team last year was held back by the team’s 92 wRC+ (23rd) against southpaws, the club’s 99 wRC+ against right-handers (17th) was still below league average. Gurriel and Suarez sport career wRC+ marks of 117 and 126 respectively figure to help the club get up to par against lefties, but their lesser marks of 111 and 106 against right-handed pitching will be less impactful. Given that, a left-handed hitter or at least a right-handed hitter who fares well against same-handed pitching could be a wise addition to the club’s hitting corps.

Of course, even if Hazen is open to adding a lefty bat to the club it’s worth noting that the club has largely been attached to right-handed bats to this point. J.D. Martinez, Jorge Soler, and Justin Turner all fit the club’s reported preference for a bat-first hitter. As such, it’s no surprise that each has been connected to Arizona even as they hit from the right side. A reunion with Tommy Pham or a deal with Rhys Hoskins could also make sense for the club in terms of righty bats. In terms of left-handed hitters, Brandon Belt, Joc Pederson, Michael Brantley, and Joey Gallo are among the options available on the open market.

This whole “lefty” vs “righty” business is dubious! Good hitter= Good hitter. Period.

If I gotta choose between a platoon with 1 guy hitting .265 and the other guy .260, I’ll settle for the third guy. The guy that hits .250 full time and has a chance to get better with double the AB’s.

But it’s usually not like that. It’s more like a couple of .280 hitters that struggle against same side pitchers, versus a guy that hits .250.

Freddie at .313 vs .275. I would say that is a normal split deviation for most good hitters.

Well, no. It is cheaper for a lot of teams to match up two flawed players to maximize production. It’s happened forever. The sum of the cheaper parts being greater than the parts alone. There are fewer and fewer complete players so you get the metrics guys matching up by advantage. And, as i said, the cost of runs produced is less, or at least that is the theory. Look up the Oscar gamble-lou pinella platoon the yankees ran during their 70’s 80’s run.

Diamondbacks are in a good spot. They could use another hitter but that hitter doesn’t need to hit from a particular side or provide much if any defensive value. Might be best to be patient and see who’s left after some players sign. Wasn’t a huge fan of the Rodriguez signing but it’s clear the Diamondbacks have a plan and are willing to spend to execute it good for them.

And the rich get richer. These guys made it to the WS last year. Step aside and give the less fortunate teams like the Yankees a shot. I mean, where’s the parity?! Should not be allowed to add FAs if you went to the WS, so it’s fair to everyone….

Clip, I think you should still allow them to add FA’s. Just no hitter with a batting avg above .176 and no pitcher with an ERA below 9. Which is a shallow pool as it is.

I think the Cards concerns are more immediate. Last season’s downturn in attendance has them very concerned. They are afraid of fan backlash.

Mo believes “Cardinal fans would never tolerate a rebuild”. He’s way out of touch. Cardinals fans would support a plan that made sense. They’re tired of being patronized by a condescending a-hole who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else.

My answer sort of depends on Masyn Winn. If Winn is playing short, then Donovan could play play 2B and Gorman at 3B, In that scenario I would rather have one of the Dodger’s young pitchers than Muncy.

But yes, I can see the benefit. I don’t know how much more the salary the Dodgers are looking to take on.

I think the Dodgers would almost have to move Muncy and he’s a lefty middle of the order bat so we could find a place for him. As far as young pitchers of theirs Bruns is the guy he’s got command issues but ace potential. May would also be cool he should be healthy by midseason.

With respect, free agents do not increase attendance. Cheap beer draws attendance. Baseball fans turn out regardless of who is playing. They like baseball . Fair weather fans show up when a team is winning. They like the excitement a winner created and want to be a part if it. Drunks will drink wherever so why not at the ball yard. to your point, if a free agent helps a team win so that the faiir weather fans and drunks show up as well, attendance will increase.

Actually there are more good players now than there has ever been. The problem is, with sports and nutritional science, 12-month conditioning programs, and analytics, pitching has advanced much farther than hitting has. How many pitchers do you think Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, or any of those guys they faced, threw in the upper 90’s to 100+ with movement?

With contraction revenues would drop, followed by salaries. How many talented kids, whether they’re from the US, Latin-America, Japan, etc. that had options, choose baseball over playing a more lucrative sport?

Contraction is about the most draconian approach to solving baseball’s problems that I could imagine. The result would, if not kill the sport, turn it into a minor niche sport with sub-par athletes that most of the world would be disinterested in watching.

Deeds is a horrendous writer. “Meanwhile” has to come at the start of a sentence; it can’t be in the middle, set off with commas. Fire this guy already and hire a real writer. So many more deserving people out there who merit a chance unlike this hack.

There is irony here of you complaining about the grammar and being wrong. If you’re upset you didn’t get hired, here’s your reason.

He’s not wrong, though. Meanwhile is a conjunctive adverb between two independent clauses, so it either needs to be at the start of a sentence or after a semicolon. The comma should come after it.

That’s not true. You can use meanwhile in the middle of a sentence with commas. It doesn’t look or sound right, but grammatically, you can.
