Padres, Tommy Nance Agree To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | December 15, 2023 at 11:18pm CDT

The Padres have agreed to a minor league contract with reliever Tommy Nance, as reflected on the MLB.com transaction log. The right-hander had reached minor league free agency after being outrighted by the Marlins at the beginning of the offseason.

Nance, 32, lost the bulk of the 2023 season to shoulder and oblique injuries. He pitched 17 innings over four minor league levels but didn’t make an MLB appearance for the Fish this year. Nance had seen a fair amount of action out of the Miami relief corps the previous season. He logged 43 2/3 innings across 35 appearances in 2022, posting a 4.33 ERA while striking out an impressive 29.1% of batters faced.

A Long Beach native and Santa Clara product, Nance has 72 1/3 MLB innings under his belt. He debuted with the Cubs in 2021 five years after going undrafted. The Marlins claimed him off waivers in Spring Training the following season. He owns a 5.47 ERA at the highest level, although he’s shown the potential to pick up a fair amount of whiffs and ground balls.

San Diego has a handful of relief jobs up for grabs after each of Josh Hader, Nick Martinez and Luis García reached free agency. The Padres are likely to add one or two relievers who’ll be locked into the season-opening mix, but they’ll also take a few fliers of this nature to bring in non-roster competition.

I sware this new ownership group has guaranteed last place finishes for years to come. No love for San Diego Padres fans and a blatant disregard for the legacy that Peter Seidler left.

        Seriously?
First it’s not a “new” Ownership group.
Second, resetting the payroll to stay under the CBT is good business.
This Ownership group is spending 3 times as much as any other….yet you still complain about them?
We have Fernando Tatis Jr. for his entire career…Machado and Bogaerts for 10 seasons…past owners would have traded every one once they got expensive.

Wouldn’t happen if teams would spend in there means. Should have a penalty to teams who spend like crazy then the next year they have a firewall the next. Take their first round pick and give it to small market teams.

If spending equated to winning then the Daddios/Yankers/City Slickers/Hells Angels/Christmas sox wouldn’t have all been cheeks this year.

Lol….. No chance it’s a firesale. And why would you expect them to dump 700 million for Ohtani, or double what Lee was supposed to make before the Giants panicked? They’ve already learned you can’t just throw money around, gotta be smart, and none of the signings so far would be smart.

Dude it’s not even Christmas yet. The way things normal play out is the very top free agents go during or right after the Winter Meeting and then things start to move in the new year. Most of free agents are still out there.

Because this cheapskate ownership group is resting on the laurels of the amazing Peter Seidler.

The group hasn’t earned a pass until they prove it.

Padres ownership will force Preller to gut the farm in trades.

The players coming back will be marginal at best and the Padres will overpay for them simply to fill out the roster.

I think you may need to let the off season play out a little bit more before over reacting. It is very apparent that no owner will ever have the drive to win a championship in San Diego like Mr. Seidler did, but other than Ohtani, no other big name free agent has signed. I am not saying that the Padres will be in on the big names, but you need to let Preller & Co do their thing. And to be honest, it seems as though having all the “stars” on last years team didn’t work, so maybe getting some “glue guys” to replace the big names might help in the long run.

When can glue guys compete for a championship? This new Fraudres ownership group is destined for last place finishes for years.

Once Seidler passed the Padres became the Fraudres.

        This team is done.

I don’t even think this person is a fan, but if they are, it’s only been for 3-4 years or so…… Definately not experienced the Padres from 10-20 years ago.
