Rays Acquire Jake Mangum As PTBNL From Bruján/Faucher Trade

By Darragh McDonald | December 8, 2023 at 2:45pm CDT

The Rays announced that they have acquired outfielder Jake Mangum as the PTBNL in last month’s deal that sent infielder/outfielder Vidal Bruján and right-hander Calvin Faucher to the Marlins. The Rays received minor league infielder Erick Lara, right-hander Andrew Lindsey and a player to be named later, which is now revealed to be Mangum. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reported the transaction shortly before the official announcement.

Remarkably, Mangum was also a PTBNL in a deal almost exactly one year ago. On December 7 of 2022, it was reported that he would go from the Mets to the Marlins as the PTBNL in the deal that sent Elieser Hernández and Jeff Brigham to Queens.

He spent 2023 in Triple-A, getting into 119 games at that level. He only struck out in 17.7% of his plate appearances but also only drew walks at a 5.4% clip and hit just five home runs. His .298/.346/.425 batting line amounted to a wRC+ of 93. But Mangum is considered a plus defender and baserunner, stealing 16 bases on the year. His bat has also been in better shape before, such as hitting .306/.363/.441 in the minors in 2022 across multiple levels.

The Rays have a solid big league outfield at the moment but guys like Manuel Margot and Randy Arozarena have been in trade rumors this winter. Whether they subtract an outfielder or not, Mangum will give them an extra bit of non-roster depth.

    Jake Magnum? He’s 27. Hopefully the Rays see something in him for their current OF. Could be a depth piece, but usually not the Rays way.

    Why would the Rays want another major league ready outfielder? depth or more likely Randy is leaving soon?

    Randy and Franco didn’t get along.

    Franco coming back due to the whole story being confirmed extortion?

    Straws are being grasped at? Was the moon landing real?

    Half life 3 confirmed?

    Probably just depth….

      Margot makes too much. He’s gone. We’ll see this guy in spring training. He has some skills, maybe his time? He’s actually the all time SEC hits leader.

        Had no idea he had the record behind him.

        Yes jokes aside I see Margot to the Mets with a prospect for some 17yo we’ve never heard of.

      @jmaggio76,

      Ditto!

      I was happy he wasn’t taken in the Rule-5 last off season only to see Mets trade him to the Marlins. That was disappointing. Mangum is blue collar type and I kept eye on his minor league career. He was college standout. He’s paid his dues in the minors. Deserves big league opportunity which hopefully he’ll get from the Rays.

          I’m a Millennial who saw a lot of Magnum PI reruns as a kid. I remember that Thomas Magnum’s baseball hero was the great Al Kaline,

    Cant speak to his MLB potential but when Mangum was in AA, he wouldn’t leave until everyone who wanted an autograph got one. Really nice guy, hopefully he gets a shot.

    Crazy what swapping two characters in a word can do. Jake Magnum sounds like an action star in a movie. Jake Mangum sounds like a strange euphemism I don’t care to look up.

    Brujan must have seen his stock collapse. I remember hearing how great his defense was and that he would barely need to hit.

    Too bad the Marlins didn’t give this guy a look. He seemed to fit the mold of what they claimed to be looking for. They even went out of the organization mid year to get a cf ( Jonathan Davis) when Jazz was injured, probably Jake saw the writing on the wall when that happened

      @Veromarlin

      If you look at the team batting averages of Marlins affiliates over the last 5 seasons, you’ll find they’re pretty bleak. For an organization that claims to value high-average contact hitters, we’re overloaded with “swing and miss” guys. Their only focus is launch angle, barrel rate, exit velocity, and the 3 true outcomes. Very stylish and modern baseball, but totally useless if you’re trying to build a winner.

      To your point, why’d we let this guy go? Why did we expose another talented MLB-ready hitter like Troy Johnston to the Rule 5 draft while simultaneously protecting flashy (but overrated) guys like Peyton Burdick and Victor Mesa Jr.? From where I stand, we’ve got a long way to go in terms of player development and accurate player evaluations.
