Cubs Sign Shota Imanaga To Four-Year Deal

By Anthony Franco | January 11, 2024 at 10:10am CDT

The Cubs officially announced the signing of left-hander Shota Imanaga to a four-year contract. It’s reportedly a $53MM guarantee. The deal contains a fifth-year team option and could reach $80MM. The Cubs will need to decide after the 2025 and potentially ’26 seasons whether to exercise the option for 2028. If the club declines the option at either point, Imanaga would have the ability to opt out and become a free agent. He receives limited no-trade rights and would earn a full no-trade clause if the Cubs exercise either of their options.

On top of what they’ll pay Imanaga, the Cubs owe a posting fee to the Yokohama BayStars of Nippon Professional Baseball. That’ll initially be a $9.825MM sum and would increase if the team exercises the option and/or Imanaga unlocks more money via escalators. The Cubs would owe the BayStars an additional 15% of whatever money the southpaw earns beyond the initial guarantee.

It’s the first MLB free agent pickup of the offseason for the Cubs. It’s a big acquisition, as the southpaw is one of the more intriguing pitchers in this year’s class. That makes the financial terms unexpected. At the beginning of the offseason, MLBTR predicted a five-year, $85MM contract. Reporting in recent weeks had suggested he could top $100MM. Even with the conditional opt-out possibilities, a $53MM guarantee and an $80MM maximum value comes in below general expectations.

Imanaga has spent the past eight seasons with the BayStars in his home country. He owns a career 3.18 ERA in a league generally regarded as the second-best level in the world. Imanaga has turned in a 3.08 or better in each of the past three seasons, including a sub-3.00 figure for the last two years.

During the 2023 campaign, he allowed 2.80 earned runs per nine through 148 innings. He led all NPB hurlers with 174 strikeouts, narrowly topping Dodgers’ $325MM signee Yoshinobu Yamamoto in that regard. That’s an impressive 29.2% clip that’s well above the 22.1% MLB average. He paired that with a tidy 4% walk rate, ranking him among NPB’s best pitchers at dominating the strike zone.

Despite the strong strikeout and walk profile, Imanaga doesn’t come with the kind of excitement generated by Yamamoto. That’s in part due to age. Having turned 30 last September, Imanaga is a typical age for a first-time free agent starter. More importantly, his repertoire points more toward a projection as a solid mid-rotation arm than a potential ace.

Evaluators with whom MLBTR spoke before the offseason suggested Imanaga profiles as a #3/4 pitcher in a big league rotation. Baseball America’s Kyle Glaser pegged him as a #4/5 type in a scouting report from early December. The 5’10” hurler typically sits in the low-90s with his fastball, touching the 94-95 MPH range in shorter stints.

Evaluators have credited him with above-average life on the pitch, allowing it to play for whiffs at the top of the strike zone despite the pedestrian velocity. Glaser writes that Imanaga backs that up with an above-average split but suggests his MLB upside may be capped by middling breaking stuff.

The main concern in Imanaga’s statistical profile has been the longball. He surrendered 17 homers last season, the second-most of any NPB pitcher. While some of that is attributable to workload — he was 15th in innings pitched — it hints at a fly-ball profile that could give some evaluators pause. The Yankees reportedly stayed on the periphery of the bidding in part because of concerns that Imanaga wouldn’t profile well in a very hitter-friendly home park. Statcast’s Park Factors rate Wrigley Field as slightly favorable to home runs, but it’s not among the top handful of hitting venues in MLB.

Imanaga’s stellar strikeout/walk profile and consistently strong results generated a decent amount of reported interest. The Red Sox, Giants and Angels were all reported to be in the bidding of late. He’ll bypass those teams to step into a Chicago rotation that seems likely to lose Marcus Stroman to free agency.

Imanaga joins Justin Steele, Kyle Hendricks and Jameson Taillon as locks for the Opening Day rotation. The likes of Jordan Wicks, Javier Assad, Hayden Wesneski and prospect Ben Brown could battle for the #5 job. There’s still plenty of time for president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer and his front office to add another starter if they want to solidify the final spot and push all their younger, unproven arms into depth roles.

The fee to the BayStars is proportional to the contract value: 20% of the deal’s first $25MM ($5MM), 17.5% of the next $25MM ($4.375MM) and 15% of further spending ($450K). The 15% rate also applies to whatever future earnings Imanaga secures.

A posting fee is on top of the sum to the player but not included in the deal’s competitive balance tax calculation. The average annual value checks in at $13.25MM. According to Roster Resource, that’ll push the team’s CBT number north of $198MM. That’s nowhere near next year’s $237MM tax threshold. Evenly distributing the salaries would move the team’s 2024 payroll commitments to roughly $191MM — slightly beyond last year’s approximate $184MM Opening Day mark.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today first reported the Cubs had an agreement with Imanaga. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the presence of various escalators and option provisions and the deal’s $80MM maximum value. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported the four-year, $53MM agreement, as well as the club option/opt-out possibilities after years two and three. Patrick Mooney of the Athletic reported the no-trade provisions.

$?? Does anyone know the length or value of the contract? People were speculating around $100M. I’m interested to see when they post the “more to come” so we can see the value.

The Cubs aren’t signing him to a 6 year deal. I’m assuming you don’t follow the Cubs? My guess is 3-4 years. 5 would be a stretch.

Unless I read too fast, I thought it said upwards of $80 either with possible or plus incentives. Also, it said something in the neighborhood of 15 per. I’ll read it again. Perhaps I’m high. EDIT: I apologize. I just noticed you posted yesterday. So obviously everything was unknown at the time.

Coop – I dunno, it’s a crap shoot with all of these free agent pitchers. Plenty of people think Snell and Montgomery would be mistakes too. At some point the Sox gotta bite the bullet, be bold and take a risk. $15M a year seems reasonable, especially if he pitches like Senga.

As for Cora, he probably was a big factor in Bloom’s firing so fans might cut him some slack … not much, but a little.

Sox aren’t landing Burnes. Snell is a terrible fit (David Price 2.0). Looks like Montgomery, though he says his wish is to return to Texas. I think if they land another starter it’s going to be a barrel scraper (Dallas Keuchel? Brad Keller?) Or a reclamation project (a Paxton reunion, Jake Odorizzi)

We already have Detmers, Sandoval, and Anderson from the left side.

Detmers has solid potential but the other two are definitely mid to back end rotation guys.

Shota seems like more of what we already have. We could use more of it, but I’d really prefer a righty or Montgomery.

I’m interested in the contract totals but if Clevinger + Hicks is close in AAV to just Shota or Snell, I’d greatly prefer the duo.

If he was as good as they were saying he would have gotten the $80-100 million that was speculated about. This deal tells me most MLB teams weren’t that impressed. You can say the Cubs got a deal but all the other teams said the Cubs overpaid by not committing more. Good luck with your overpaid middle reliever.

That’s insane, and I’m as big of a Mervis fan as anyone but remember we needed a BIG BAT to pair with retaining Bellinger of the 2023 team. We have no improved bats yet from the second half and none automatically ready to jump up and perform. If Belli goes, Shirely, they will not start the season without getting a thump from a JD Martinez, Soler, Justin Turner, or Rhys Hoskins type of bat.

Too soon to say.. He and the Cubs were great together last season. They need a power LH bat. The man is gold glove level in CF and damn good at 1B. Too many naysayers on here. He could just as easily end up being as good as last year going forward. If they add a Chapman and a couple of BP pieces, they could be much better

I just don’t get people. The only knock on Bellinger really was that his exit velo was low. If people actually watched his at bats though, it was low because with 2 strikes he was slapping at the ball and it worked out great. I think at the end of the year he was trying to get his power numbers up so he was doing it less. That didn’t work for him. Still ended up with a fantastic year and power numbers that were very good with him missing a month. Keeping him at 1b is ideal to keep him healthy. But Bellinger and a great DH like JD Martinez or J. Turner would be a great fit.

PCA did not look remotely close to being a big league hitter. Defense is excellent tho. Mervis was just bad, like a 4 A player, so he’ll be in the minors unless he destroys in the spring. P wizzy is a solid power but but awful at 1st defensively. Maybe they are banking on Counsel to get a few more wins with that same scenario but I feel like they want a 1st base bat.

Ya, I wouldn’t have said it otherwise. I hope he is great, or even average at the dish with that glove because it is elite. Ive seen enough baseball to know if a guys ready to hit or not and he wasn’t. In his defense, obviously yes a very small sample size but overmatched is easy to see.

What everyone overlooks here is that PCA NEVER would have been called up if the Cubs weren’t in a playoff chase. He was brought up for defense and base running (didn’t do very well on the paths).

He was a September call up for situational baseball only.

He is probably AT LEAST another half season, if not full minor league season away from being ready.

If we are in 2025 and his hit tool isn’t ready it may be time for the slightest of concern. Not after 14 plate appearances scattered over 20 or so games.

I agree with cheese. PCA is nowhere near ready, plate-wise. He may be the starting CF in 2025, but on Opening Day 2024 it is looking like Mike Tauchman unless the Cubs overpay for Bellinger, which would be ok with me. Could PCA be ready by mid-season, maybe, but better to wait rather than having him bounce up and down. I am sure that he will be a big league player – and eventually a good one – but not Opening Day 2024.

Again, PCA had 14 at-bats. It’s just silly to pretend like we have any idea what he might look like given a lot of at-bats and time to adjust. There is no indication that the Cubs will have to overpay to land Bellinger. As time marches on, Bellinger will be just as in need of signing a contract as The Cubs will be in singing more talent to their lineup. Everyone thought they were going to overpay for Imanaga, they didn’t at all. and in fact it looks to be what I suggested it might be, 2-3 years and then options.

In Sandberg’s first 1374 at-bats, he had an OBP of 0.314 and averaged 7.5 home runs per year.

In 337 at-bats, Mike Tauchman hit 8 home runs and had an OBP of 0.363.

The average OBP in baseball for the 2021 regular season was around 0.320.

As an outfielder, higher production is traditionally expected than as a middle infielder.

But Sandberg ended up being a Hall of Famer, there are lenty of 0 for 28s who do do not.

The Cubs will probably sign 1 of Belli, Hoskins, Chapman – Belli is the best fit as a lefty and CF. Plus it looks like his market has dried up for the 200+ Borad was hoping. I’d guess 20ish AAV with an opt out after yr 2.

Cubs need to replace his bat for sure. Defensively if they stick PCA in center they are improved. Honestly, if they sign Turner, Hoskins and play PCA in center they are probably better all around. Stroman was worthless in the second half but pitched extremely well in the first. Imanaga seems like a great replacement.

A fair deal for Chicago would be 7/190 with an opt-out after 2026 if Bellinger finishes in the top 4 for MVP once in the first three years, and a team ability to defer most of the last four years if he is awful (with PA as a proxy for that).

Smyly makes about $9M. At least Craig Breslow knows enough not to trade for him. The White Sox could use him, he’d be their ace once they trade Cease.

Reportedly, the NPB baseball is slightly smaller and more tacky, allowing better grip, and thusly, enhanced spin rates. We’ll have to see how that plays out in the MLB over an entire season for him. He’s 5’10”, and his hands may not be able to do what they did, not to mention the rest of his body.

@baseballpun I have seen a couple of his recent games in the Japan League and he seems to always have the hitters off-balance. He seems like a pitcher who knows how to use his pitches effectively, basically someone who doesn’t just rely on natural talent.

It may not translate to the MLB, but when he is on the mound, he reminds me of a lefty Zack Greinke during his prime. He has that type of command of the game.

I haven’t seen Imanaga work much, but I did watch a prime Greinke work a whole lot and he had close to if not Hall of Fame worthy stuff. He had 5 or 6 pitches with 3 really nasty ones. Imanaga from what I saw is 91-93 with a split. He has good control but Greinke painted. I’m trying too but I just don’t see the comparison.

@Chris from NJ what surprised me about Imanaga is how he could throw his fastball in and out to righties and they would just take a called strike or swing and miss. It’s weird because it doesn’t seem like it has a lot of movement of speed, but more like the hitters can’t read it until it’s too late.

Again, this may not translate to MLB, but I hope he does well. Also, I’m not a Cubs fan, I’m a Braves fan that goes to a lot of Angels games due to proximity and was hoping he would sign with them

Just because Hoyer gives you players doesn’t mean they will succeed CC has a doghouse. Expect him to put Morel in that. CC uses players the way he wants and not how they will succeed. He plays favorites. Like Adames he should’ve been benched numerous times the last couple of years because of slumps and he refuse to do it. If he don’t like someone it doesn’t matter if they earned playing time he won’t play them.

I expect Morel to get traded within 60 days. Morel is a 2B or DH and Dansby and Nico have the middle infield covered. Morel has a lot of swing and miss for a DH, but ok iof someone needs a 2B. I know Seattle tried to get rid of low on-base guys, but it still feels lit a fit to me. Cubs could get a middle reliever and a team top 15-20 prospect and make a deal.

Not saying he can’t improve, but Craig Counsel will expect more with the glove or Morel is limited to DH and utility. And there is a lot of swing and miss.

          In 2023 DL play:

Player A 0.296 batting average, 9 home runs
Player B 0.217 batting average, 3 home runs

          Player A is Franmil Reyes
          Player B is Christopher Morel

Spot on ChrisEnvy——“only” 4 errors in 162 innings would be roughly 30 errors if he was the primary third baseman and played 120 games.

For comparison, Nick Madrigal NEVER played third base before last season and made four errors in 562 innings.

The Cubs brass obviously has a huge slant to defensive being highly important, thus Morel has poor chance of being an every day anything other than DH.

He won’t be a huge overpay. Bellinger’s approach with 2 strikes is the biggest change he had and noting that his approach was to slap at the ball, you then understand why his exit velo was down and batting average was up. You don’t need high exit velo to be successful. Bellinger would be a great pick up for the Cubs as long as they add another bat, maybe two.

Yeah. I’ll never forget how the Mets won the world series last year by spending more than other teams in the off season. It really isn’t fair. How is Arizona supposed to compete with that? I also remember how the Angels won all of those world series with the super team of Trout and Ohtani. How is anyone supposed to compete with that. Every roster should like the Pirates’ or it isn’t fair.

Well, to be honest you can’t blame LAD for OHTANI’s request to have his total salary deferred. To do so is to ignore the fact that Ohtani wanted to play in LA, he wanted to win with LA, and he was willing to sacrifice what most players aren’t to get that done. Nothing to do with LAD except they were his choice location.

Clip, I concur. I also think 90% of the reason he agreed to have money deferred was literally for them to sign Yoshi. They probably told Shohei point blank: “Sign and we will get your man or die trying.” And if not Yoshi, they probably swore that they would grab whatever other pitchers he personally liked. Snell and Monty? Would have been to problem…They probably were 99% to the finish line with Yoshi as they were sealing the deal with Shohei.

Yes, it’s a sacrifice. If he dies at some point before he collects in that money, he never gets to enjoy what he earned. I’m not saying it doesn’t also have some benefits for him also.

Cohen (CA) is right. This probably happens more frequently than people think. If you take $10M for a movie, you pay tax on $10M. But if you take $1M, and a deferred piece of the future gross, you can defer that tax until you live in a low-tax state.

NYS addresses this in their public pension plans by taxing the contributions to the plans, and not taxing them when you take the distributions.

Between Bell, Tauchman, PCA, Mervis and Canario and Morel – that should be enough for Counsell to figure out covering CF, 1B and hopefully DH.
Also now with this signing it gives the Cubs the leeway and LH SP capital to work out a trade for a short term solution for 3B.

Dogbone- I hate to break it to you but Morel is the short term answer at 3B and Shaw is the long term answer. The deadline is the half year answer if Morel flops. The Cubs had about 60 million to spend to get to 237 million Luxury Dollars. If Bellinger costs 25 say that leaves around 20 million to get 2 relievers and either Bell or Hoskins. I’m sure finessing will be involved unless they can lose Smyly’s 11 million.

I’m rather annoyed that I suggested the Cubs should have traded Mancini for Bell last year.
The Marlins trade Segura and their “11th ranked prospect” bust for Bell… Segura was owed more money than Mancini and the Guards happily took it on and cut him immediately. Imagine if the Cubs had Bell after the trade deadline, imagine if they had him now at a net cost of only 8 million dollars because we didn’t have Mancini.

Yeah, The Mancini thing was a bad idea and I liked it at the time which makes me feel worse. I’m thinking that if the Cubs, Didn’t pick up Hendricks option for 16 million they might be in a little better shape as they could probably get a guy like Clevinger a little cheaper. I still say Assad and Wicks would of made reasonable replacements for Hendricks. But what’s done is done. I’m sure that Ricketts and Hoyer would like to keep it below the Luxury Tax because that’s always the goal, But with the contracts coming off next year and everybody important already signed it would be no problem if the Cubs went over a bit this year. It would be easy to reset. I figure around 45-50 million coming off this winter and no major spending needed.

One of them will replace Hendricks next year, which is ideal. Gives Assad and/or Wicks a chance to prove themselves in the fifth starter spot and move up to four next year while Horton/ Brown/whoever didn’t get it this year/etc battle for the fifth spot next year, then they move up and replace Taillon. It’s actually building a rotation the way you should.
          Ideally you have
          Steele
          Imanaga
          Taillon
          Hendricks
          Wicks/Assad
          Then
          Steele
          Imanaga
          Taillon
          Wicks/Assad
          Brown/Horton
          Followed by:
          Steele
          Brown/Horton
          Imanaga

Exactly. Then you have no problems until Horton, Brown, Assad, Wicks reach 30 and then hopefully you have guys coming behind them ala the Rays philosophy. Then you can add if you want or trade or basically do anything.

PCA > Bellinger. Done. They’re not wasting a fortune on Bellinger. Plus, they’re loaded with good OF prospects.

They need more pitching and a corner infielder.

Yeah but there are not at first base. Bellinger plays cf while PCA works on his hit tool, then pushes to first or RF where he won a gold glove. Suzuki DH/outfield sub.
You can say what you want but no one currently on this team is a 30/100 threat

You sign Bellinger to play Cf until Crow Armstrong is 100% ready then he goes to 1b. Then you trade outfield bats for pitching and / or 3B.

Rotation handedness really doesn’t matter as long as all the pitchers are good. If a lefty is a starter it’s because he’s capable of getting righty hitters out

It’s rare because lefties are rarer. The 2018 Red Sox won 108 games and the World Series with 3 lefties in the rotation. Different looks only make a real difference when you’re talking about the bullpen

No. Because Stephenson and Brasier have both dumped a pitch that I hate and adopted Cutters instead of Sweepers. I hate that pitch There are very few P’s that can throw that pitch and actually control it. I hope Wesneski follows suit. Hicks only problem his whole career is staying healthy. I don’t expect he’ll get anywhere near the 4-40 this site is predicting. If it is I’m out. And Leiter and Little neutralize Lefties. And Horn is in the wings and if the Cubs are stuck with Smyly he obviously will start out in the pen one would assume.

Strange fact, that exact issue was on Dustin Hoffman’s desk in “Rainman”when Charlie first visits the hospital.

Yep, one of the most unexciting WS runs in recent memory. Going into the playoffs NOBODY in Massachusetts was talking about them, seeing they were a boring watch. Once they made the playoffs and won a few games fans finally started paying attention, but still, the team had little buzz even throughout the playoffs.

Then in typical fashion when they won the fans cheered and acted like fans often do up here. They got on the bandwagon.

Red Sox fans are not Cubs fans, and that Red Sox team had zero character, and an ailing David Ortiz who was using to get himself through an Achilles injury.

          Exciting: Betts, Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez’s
great year, Devers’ first full season, a very strong rotation and great closer seem like a few good reasons to be excited.

I’m obviously not going to change your mind, but 29 other fanbases would trade places that season.

I mean, you can armchair QB all day, but at the time some of the prospects had worth..

Dombrowski was a terrible GM.and Pres of Player Ops

          -His drafts had little impact
2016 – Jay Groome, Bobby Dalbec
          2017 – Tanner Houck
2018 – Triston Casas, Nick Decker
          2019 – no 1st rounder

What did these players do or get them

          Awesome as a draft expert

          -His trades in 2018

Arizona (3/24/18) Josh Taylor for Deven Marrero
Seattle (4/23/18) Eric Filia for Roenis Elias
Toronto (6/28/18) Steve Pearce for Santiago Espinal
Tampa Bay (7/25/18) Nathan Eovaldi for Jalen Beeks
Los Angeles (7/30/18) Ian Kinsler for Ty Buttrey, Williams Jerez

Where is the impact there? He magically got one of Eovaldi’s good streaks in the playoffs, which was PURE luck because he has been so up and down in his career..

          His free agent signings
          2015 – David Price
          2016 – Mitch Moreland,
2018 – Eduardo Nunez, J.D. Martinez, Ryan Brasier
2019 – Steve Pearce, Nate Eovaldi

Tell me who of those players you would have signed besides JD? Price was TRASH

This isn’t even considering he let Betts walk, extended Sale and left the team baron.

You ask me if I’d want 3 last place finished and a championship or 4 1st or 2nd place finishes and an exit in the playoffs in competitive games, I would take the latter. I’m not a player, I’m a fan. The latter guarantees for 4 years I enjoyed a full season of baseball, something the Red So did not do much of, and have not since. Under Dumbrowski, the Sox were done by the All Star Break. in the years they stunk it up.

Sorry, guy is terrible, and he has a track record of this. He decimated Detroit prior.. Perfect example of failing upwards!

Mayer couldn’t hit double a pitching last year all be it in a short window of play, Anthony has gotten to high a my man he’s got a long way to go I’m not saying that he’s not promising but they are all far from guarantees. like I said maybe one of the three and l’ll even say one is traded this offseason for a rental. And I think just my opinion but you’ll see his first year struggle in the show kinda like Duran had he’s gotta adjust to that next level breaking pitches I’m all in on Teel he raked up here and I’m excited to see Anthony when he gets here but as for Mayer I’m not sold. I think the Sale and Price deals had that impact on Henry. It might explain why no one wanted this job. I hope they will operate like the Astros….develop players, use depth in the system to trade for what they need to make the playoffs, but never sell the farm big to win one year….sign long-term deals to your homegrown players, and overpay but short in years for impact free agents.

Two things: First, I see this analogy–Yamamoto is to Imanaga as Jose Abreu was to Rusney Castillo. In other words, I think the Sox dodged a bullet. (When the Sox fought to sign Abreu and couldn’t do it, they took their “Let’s get a Cuban ballplayer!” fervor to the signing of Castillo in a wild overpay.)
Second, I think Breslow quietly has so much faith in his new pitching brain trust with him, Bailey, and Willard at the top that he wants a shot at remaking a number of pitchers already on the roster and in the minors before having to spend large on FA pitching. A trade might still be alive for this offseason.

          =============================
I think Rusney was a legit player that the RS and Ben panicked on. It was an overpay, but he looked like a legit player to me. They should’ve given him more time, but didn’t want to pay the tax.

Past that, I think it is a perfect comparison. Imanaga has nowhere near Ohtani’s velocity. And his HR/9 is higher than the team average. It’s really tough for professionals to translate these things, let alone us commoners.

If the deal is over $20 million a year for 4 years then the Cubs got fleeced and I’m glad the Giants said Sayonara. He profiles as a #3 at best, most likely a #4 starter. Giants need a legit pitcher – Snell. And they need relief help. Hader. And they need bats – real bats. Trade the rookies or play em.

Good for the Cubs. As a Giants’ fan I’m kind of bummed. I think he’s going to be better than the 3-4 guy predicted by many. A lot of people make a big deal over the HRs, but that’s one stat out of context. If that relatively high HRs allowed went with a high ERA that would be another thing. As another poster pointed out, how and when a pitcher gives up HRs is important. I rather a pitcher with a lead pound the strike zone and give up a HR than give out free passes. And at a $15M AAV he seems like a bargain, given the cost of FA SPs these days.

Agreed, I was saying 20+ million was too rich for my blood, risk not worth the reward but around a 15 million AAV? Well worth the risk. If he turns into a plus three then that’s awesome for the Cubs, if he’s a four, it seems like a fair price. Given the amount of young pitching the Cubs have, it’s an acceptable risk.

$15 million AAV? Does not like sound like that $100 million-plus contract we heard about. The bidding war may not have driven the price to ridiculous heights.

But who knows? I guess we’ll get all the financials soon enough. Good pickup for the Cubs, though Imanaga will have to learn how to finesse MLB hitters. He’s not gonna blow people away with the fastball.

Um, $15 million for six years is $90 million. Which is significantly less than the $100 million-plus contract MLBTR and other people were talking about. We’ll see, but teams might have been worried about Imanaga’s less than overwhelming fastball and home run tendencies.

Let’s just wait to see all the financials.

Seven years? That would take him to age 37, which would be a major surprise. He’s a finesse pitcher already with an average fastball at best. Not the guy you bet on until his late 30s.

But we’ll see when all the financials come out.

See my comment below. Bowden just posted that the contract could max out at $80 million, with all sorts of complications: opt outs, player/team options, incentives. So it looks like the $100 million plus talk was way overblown. Again, a mediocre fastball and home run tendencies might have scared off a lot of clubs and resulted in less overall dollars.

Are you Imanaga’s agent? Just kidding (I think). Anyway, Bowden’s numbers are in line with the the $15 million AAV that Morosi reported. The $80 million cap also sounds reasonable because it would take Imanaga to his age 36 year, which is probably all the Cubs wanted to stretch things to.

Anyway, it sounds well short of the $100 million plus we heard about. But even an $80 million cap will mean a substantial posting fee to Japan. As I posted below, I’m not sure how they will calcluate the fee with all the complications in the contract. But it will be a substantial number.

I cannot see any scenario where Imanaga could only secure a 2/30 guarantee as his best offer.

I wasn’t super high on Imanaga on a 5/100 like was being floated around simply because I think signing any foreign league player comes with a huge risk of the unknown and paying market value for an unknown doesn’t appeal that much to me. But 2/30 for a lefty with an elite fastball coming out of a rare arm slot and also has a ridiculous “mystery pitch” is beyond worth the risk and borderlines on a steal given the free agent prices.

Kudus to the Cubs front office team, I don’t know what kind of witch craft they used to get this deal done but this is EXACTLY what the Cubs need (a high upside pitcher that can miss bats) at exactly the price point they should be at for the risk.

It’s a $30 million contract not 90 and even with escalators and such, it only maxes out at 80, and one imagines if the escalators are met, it means he has pitched well for them and might well be worth the extra money.

And TJ is a crap shoot. It happens when it happens and it can happen to any pitcher at any time, no matter the size.

I think the contract is solid and sensible. Gives the player room to get more if he earns it, room for the Cubs to cut bait without too much financial pain if it doesn’t work out.

All window dressing anyway so the Cubs (or anyone else who makes a signing at this point) can be runner-up to the Dodgers.

Expressing concern theoretically Ohtani could move out of state later during the contract and thereby avoid paying taxes on the bulk of money paid out depriving CA. Not sure too many folks out there give a da mn about CA, but thought this could fuel their animosity.

If Imanaga cannot hack it as a starter the Cubs simply will transition him to the pen. A lefty hitting mid 90s with two plus pitches profiles extremely well as a reliever.

I thought he was hitting about 91? Did I misread that? But, they could transition him either way, it’s just a lot to pay a reliever, especially when they seem reluctant to spend at times.

Hopefully you won’t have to cross that bridge at all though.

Actually, the Cubs can get out after 2 years if for some reason this guy totally wets himself.

No, he can opt-out if they decline his fifth year, but he’s locked into 4 guaranteed.

He works around 92, dials it up to 95-96 in short outings. WBC his average was 94.5 with max effort of 96.4 with a 20.5 vertical run which is elite.

Oh, man. Yeah, I read that he can go that high in short stints, but that’s kind of ambiguous. I didn’t realize that was his average in the WBC though, unless I missed that in the article.

I also read an interesting stat on him: that a majority of his HRs in the NPB were on his FB, but it was also during FB counts. I’m sure MLB will change his pitch mix to mitigate that. I did also read that his stuff is elite, as you detailed.

This could end up being one of the best pitching deals of the offseason.

It will be interesting that is for sure. I do think his floor is likely a very good reliever. He has an interesting arm slot, solid velocity and obvious swing and miss stuff.
Obviously, Cubs are not looking at him as a reliever but it’s never a bad idea to have a fall back option.
The Cubs also have had a ton of success with Justin Steele, a guy who has a similar riding four seam fastball everyone thought was “average” but no one can seem to hit.

Doesn’t seem like that crazy of a deal, given this year’s signings. I apologize if this was already discussed, but the article mentions he was the “second-best level in the world.” Does this mean the second-best from a Japanese league player signing this offseason, or a legit #2 starter?

These media reports this winter have been all over the place in terms of reliability. 4 years for 13+ per year seems more reasonable, 30 for 2 years would have been surprisingly low. Suffice it to say the Cubs should not be done if they want to be better than they were in 2023.

I’m surprised that they got that good of a deal. However, based on scouting reports this appears to be a mid-rotation signing. I’m not sure what his upside is but at 30 and another soft/mid thrower this doesn’t feel like the big signing that they need for the rotation. However it looks to be a solid upgrade over what they have available.

    Signing itself 10/10
    Impact 6.5/10

“If the club declines the option at either point, Imanaga would have the ability to opt out and become a free agent.”

Opt out when? At the point if they decline at the end of the ‘25 or ‘26 seasons, or at the end of ‘27 season regardless of when they decline.

That was either poorly worded, or we don’t know enough about the contract.

In most contracts, if the team declines an option, then there is nothing to opt out of. The only way that terminology works is if the Cubs have a 2-year option for $30M for example, and if they decline, it reverts to a one-year deal for $13M, with an option for Imanaga to decline.

Farhan let this one get away for not not that much money overall…not that I was doing backflips over Imanaga but also worried the overspend is now coming with Snell. I’d rather see what we can land for an arm via trade, but Bellinger is the white whale this off-season.

OK so The Boston Redsox can’t top 2 years 18.5 aav for Marcus Stroman at 32yrs old?!!! Or a 13.25 aav for years on Imanaga?? Tell me they’re going to F – Up their great position by trading Mayer, Anthony or God forbid Teel for a rental (Burns or Cease)?? Don’t! Go for it if it’s without those 3 but I don’t not for a rental. Get an Ace or 2 in 2024 along with Soto at this point…Montgomery is not a #1 or #2 nor is Snell really…at this point don’t do some BS 6 ot 7 year Boras fantasy deal on those 2…just trade Yoshida and Jansen and reset for the go for it in 2025…Redsox Nation will see you back at Fenway and in the ticket isles, at the merchandise stores and online streaming subscriptions then…but right now…Redsox Nation isn’t going to tune in in 2024…how dumb do you billionaires think we are? We’re not “full throttle ” dumb …chow for now…RSN!
