Marlins, Jonathan Davis Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | January 8, 2024 at 12:28pm CDT

The Marlins have agreed to a deal bringing outfielder Jonathan Davis back to the organization, as Davis himself announced on Instagram. Miami outrighted Davis off the 40-man roster at season’s end rather than tender him a contract in arbitration. The team has yet to announce the signing, but it’s a minor league contract with an invite to spring training, per Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extra Base. Davis is represented by the Beverly Hills Sports Council.

Davis, 31, spent the bulk of the 2023 season with the Marlins organization after coming over in a May trade with the Tigers. He appeared in 34 games and tallied 104 trips to the plate, batting .244/.307/.378 with a pair of homers, four doubles, a triple and a steal in that time. He’s one of the game’s speedier options in the outfield, clocking in at an average sprint speed of 28.9 feet per second, according to Statcast, which places him in the 89th percentile of MLB players.

In parts of six big league seasons, Davis is a .198/.295/.276 hitter. He’s upped his walk rate considerably in recent seasons, however, drawing a free pass in 11.1% of his plate appearances dating back to 2021. Davis is also a lifetime .260/.362/.433 hitter in parts of five Triple-A seasons and is plenty experienced in all three outfield slots. Statcast pegs him as a plus defender in center, where he’s been credited with 11 Outs Above Average in 982 innings.

The Marlins have lefty hitters in center (Jazz Chisholm Jr.) and right field (Jesus Sanchez), with righty-hitting Bryan De La Cruz in left. Switch-hitting utilitymen Xavier Edwards and Vidal Brujan are also in the mix for outfield time, as is right-handed-hitting Peyton Burdick. Davis, another righty bat, doesn’t exactly profile as a platoon option for either Chisholm or Sanchez, as he’s a career .214/.338/.313 hitter even against lefties. However, if he makes the roster, he’d be an option to give either player an occasional breather (ideally against lefties) or rest day at designated hitter, and his speed makes him a viable pinch-running threat or late-game defensive upgrade.

Korn is about to go on tour, so hopefully he’s in shape for baseball activities in March.

Arguably the most underrated organization (and stadium) in all of sports. 2 World Championships in their first decade of existence and an incredible stadium.

It was a great organization but ever since they gave up on buying WS and then having fire sales, it has gone down hill. I miss those years.

Apparently according to many fans and reporters from NY, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, E!SPN and FOX Sports, the Marlins bought the 1997 Championship, but the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, White Sox, Cubs and Phillies didn’t…the Mets and none of them didn’t even try to.

          So, this explains their credibility.

Two of the funniest moments from that World Series was when Jim Leyland made his point.

First, when he called out the enture media that was saying it and the whole thing about “nobody wanting the Marlins in the World Series”, and Leyland saying that if the media wanted it that way, they should just send a memo to every MLB team so they know to let the Yankees and Braves win.

And the second thing was, after they won, and Leyland was done doing the march around the stadium and headed to the sopt for the trophy presentation, how Jim Gray tried to shake his hand to congratulate him, and Jim Leyland just pushed Gray’s hand aside. And it shows clearly on the video forever! Awesome after Jim Gray was one of the main culprits bashing the Marlins.

          Good stuff!

I think Gen Z might have some kind of nostalgic yen for Korn, but I don’t know why. I gave them a listen for the first time in a while…it was never great music, but it was good for my teenage years. Their newer music is…not good…and seems to be about ketamine and meth usage.

So, for every 15 ABs in his career, he drove in an RBI.

In comparison, for Aaron Judge, he drives in an RBI every 6 ABs.

Ronald Acuña Jr.: Drives in 1 RBI every 7.5 ABs.

So, I can conclude that Jonathan Davis is 50% less productive at driving in RBIs per AB than Acuña and and 60% less productive than Judge.

He is a stellar fielder, late game replacement, thats his role, he is fast too, just a role player, someone you would not sign for RBIs.

It’s it sad that prolific HR hitters are only about 50% better at hitting RBIs than a AAAA scrub that is never in an RBI position? Haha!

Except he’s not a scrub. Might not be a Trout, but he has a very similar profile to Jon Burti and there’s about 29 other teams that would take Burti on their bench right now

We’re talking about professional players here. The gap is much smaller than say the high school kid that plays Varsity baseball and has scouts and recruiters looking at him vs the high school player that can’t make his high school team, so is back playing rec ball during his high school years until he’s 18.

They don’t need both of those guys. They already have at least six DH type guys in the lineup. Don’t need two more. JD Martinez is the guy if you have to pick one. Soler is going to be a terrible contract wherever he ends up.

      @Stretch

I think we need to sign either Anderson or Rosario first because those are bigger needs.

With DH, we kind of can survive with either Sanchez or De La Cruz manning that while we’re forced to play Avi Garcia for his defense in the OF. Now if we DFA Avi, then we have a spot for JD or Soler. But SS is the bigger need.

Neither of those guys are the way to go for SS. Rosario I’d like if Marlins got for 2B and shift Arraez to DH/1B with Bell.

For SS I’d like Marlins to target a young controllable player like Joey Ortiz or Ezequiel Duran. Even Santiago Espinal would be good if they think he can re-gain his form offensively .

I don’t want to trade assets for gambles on prospect SSs. But I wouldn’t mind taking a crack at Espinal because the pricetag is lower than it is for the gambles, and he’s an upgrade over 2022-23 Wendle.

No disrespect to Davis. I’m glad he’s back in the organization. But let’s not forget about Dane Myers, an excellent defender who also swings a potent bat. To me, he’s looking good as the 4th OF and may even win a starting job (over Sanchez or DLC) in ST. Don’t get me wrong. I like our outfield well enough, but I’ve got a feeling about this guy. He’s got nothing left to prove in the minors or winter ball. The Marlins should neither trade him nor overlook him.

Myers will get the opportunity. Davis is more of a depth move to be an insurance policy in case no one takes hold of that backup CF role.
