Teams Showing Interest In Brandon Crawford

By Nick Deeds | January 28, 2024 at 2:12pm CDT

To this point in the winter, the market surrounding Brandon Crawford has been all but silent in the public sphere, with no rumors of note connecting the longtime shortstop to interested clubs throughout the offseason. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been interest in the 13-year MLB veteran’s services, however. In fact, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported this morning that Crawford has drawn interest from multiple teams this winter. Rosenthal adds that while Crawford would consider a move off shortstop to second or third base this winter, he could decide to retire “if the right opportunity does not arise.”

Crawford, who celebrated his 37th birthday last week, is coming off a difficult 2023 season where he missed time throughout the campaign with calf, hamstring, forearm, and knee issues that surely hampered his performance throughout the year. The veteran slashed a paltry .194/.273/.314 in 320 trips to the plate with the Giants. He remained a quality defender per Statcast with +6 Outs Above Average at shortstop in spite of the offensive struggles, though Fielding Bible’s Defensive Runs Saved were far more skeptical of his performance, grading him at a brutal -14 figure that was bottom three among shortstops last season.

Despite the varied opinions on his defensive chops at shortstop at this point in his career and his recent struggles at the plate, it’s not hard to see why some teams would have interest in adding Crawford to their infield mix. After all, the veteran is just two seasons removed from an explosive 2021 campaign where he slashed .298/.377/.522 while finishing fourth in NL MVP voting. What’s more, as a left-handed hitting infielder with a career .249/.323/.403 slash line against right-handers, Crawford could perhaps provide a counterbalance to the infield mix of a club heavy on right-handed hitters.

Perhaps the strongest point in Crawford’s favor as he seeks a role in the majors for the 2024 campaign is the dearth of shortstop options available this winter. As things stand, the class is led by Tim Anderson, who is coming off a platform season even weaker on both sides of the ball than that of Crawford, and Amed Rosario, who pairs a below-average offensive season with defense at shortstop that routinely ranks among the worst in the majors according to defensive metrics. While second and third base offer some stronger options, this winter’s infield class as a whole is unusually thing, particularly for a club who can’t afford to make a run for third baseman Matt Chapman.

Rosenthal does not mention which specific teams have interest in Crawford’s services, though he does make clear that a reunion between Crawford and the Giants “appears out of the question.” That’s not necessarily a surprise, as the Giants have been frequently connected to Chapman this winter and appear poised to give top prospect Marco Luciano the keys to shortstop after he made his big league debut late last year.

As Crawford searches for a new organization for the first time in his 16-year professional career, there are a few speculative fits that could make sense for his services. Should Crawford wish to finish out his career in the bay area, crossing the bay to play for the A’s during their final season in Oakland could allow him to do that while offering the young A’s roster a veteran leader who can plug the club’s obvious hole at shortstop, where Nick Allen and Rule 5 pick Darell Hernaiz appear to be the best remaining options. Looking beyond the bay area, the Marlins, Mariners, Rays, and Pirates are among the teams who could use additional infield help that wouldn’t break the bank.

Teams must be truly desperate to avoid Rosario and Anderson.

I wonder what their agents are asking for. I’m sure some teams are interested, but the players may be unrealistic with what they want.

I have zero doubt their ask is excessive. Garrett Hampson actually adds defensive value at short and signed for $2 million. I would consider both Rosario and Anderson as downgrades at this point.

Yeah, I could imagine their agents are really trying to take advantage of the thin market and teams are trying to deflate it a bit.

They’re interested on a minor league deal. Anderson has shown no indication he can still hit at all and Rosario has proven to be a backup infielder not worth giving over 250 PAs a year.

It’s pick your poison with this bunch. Teams have to ask themselves, “Which of these guys will end up giving me the least in terms of buyer’s remorse?”

Out of all of them, I’d take Solano. Guy had a 350 OBP. For 2B, I mean. Since the other 3 mentioned (Crawford, Anderson and Rosario), will probably be sliding over to the keystone this season.

I actually can see Anderson as a bounce back candidate. How do you go from batting champ to one of the worst hitters in the league that quick. The April knee injury may have thrown his season off. At 2B he could be at least serviceable.

Funny last I had read somewhere was that Zaidi was open or had had a conversation about Crawford backing up Luciano. Again maybe it doesn’t fit how/where he wants to play and that makes the fit harder. Still a surprise to see a comment about no reunion.

I love Craw, but there’s no upside here. It’s Luciano’s job and he can’t be given a short leash. They can already move Thairo to SS and Flores to 2B if needed.

Those roster spots are golden, especially in our situation. We need every spot possible focused on the future.

Totally agree on the roster issue. Luciano, Schmitt, & Estrada should be the future (2025). Don’t really see the need for veteran backup this year. Fitzgerald & Wisely can be used. I would keep Casey @ AAA to get consistent at bats to improve his breaking ball issues.

Other than maybe A’s I don’t see him getting a definite starting role with any team. I very well could be wrong and him and his agent see teams that starting could be an option.

Assuming it is not the case though, I absolutely agree it is surprising to hear no mention of him resigning with Giants. I always root for players who have a shot at one team for career. I also think he’d be valuable off the bench and as a veteran presence for younger IFs.

I wouldn’t. Once it’s over it’s over, and many players regret leaving too soon. If it was me I’d play until no one else wanted me. It’s nice to see a player stay with one team his entire career, but it shouldn’t be forced. When it happens it needs to work for both player and team. It doesn’t really bother me that Willie Mays finished his career with the Mets. It doesn’t affect how I felt about him as a Giant, nor my belief that he was the greatest all-around player in the history of the game.

Crawford should retire. What’s the point of dragging out a great career with an uncompetitive team while also dealing with constantly nagging injuries and clearly on the decline? No one plays forever.

Crawford should retire before he embarrasses himself by being bad on a bad, non-competive, irrelevant team. The guy has made over 100M playing a kid’s game and it’s now time to move onto the next chapter of your life and give the younger players a chance.

No major league ballplayer should ever be embarrassed about anything short of questionable off-field issues. Guys like Crawford have succeeded in an elite group.

Crawford played MLB ball for 13 seasons, won 4 GGs, was a 3 time AS, with one SS award. Even if he plays next year and has a bad season is no basis for embarrassment.

He couldn’t be much worse than he was in 2023, so who cares if he’s bad again. I just don’t get fans wanting players to retire. Let them live their lives doing what they want. They’ve earned that.

It’s annoying when writers make comments like, “he’s only two years removed from x success.” It’s worse here because they are referring to a 37 year old in obvious decline. He’s not going to somehow find a fountain of youth and regain his form!

The reason he’s been injured so many times in recent years is not simply his age, it’s his weight. Like Joc, he needs to lose, or perhaps redistribute, about 30 pounds.

“…as a left-handed hitting infielder with a career .249/.323/.403 slash line against right-handers, Crawford could perhaps provide a counterbalance to the infield mix of a club heavy on right-handed hitters.”

A career OPS of .726 against right handers could provide a counterbalance? Any contender with a right heavy lineup where that could perhaps provide a counterbalance is in the minors.

They already half a left handed hitting 1B with strong on-base skills in LaMonte Wade Jr. and Flores is set to DH, don’t see much of a spot for him there unless one of them gets hurt, or if Conforto or Yaz get hurt and they shift Wade to the OF,
