Yankees Notes: Snell, Injuries, Judge

By Nick Deeds | January 20, 2024 at 10:18pm CDT

Earlier this month, the Yankees reportedly made an offer to left-hander Blake Snell, the top remaining starting pitcher on the open market this winter. At the time, no deal got done due to what was reportedly a significant gap between the sides, which ultimately led GM Brian Cashman and his front office to pivot to a two-year deal for right-hander Marcus Stroman. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand provided an update on Snell’s free agency today, noting that while the Yankees offered Snell $150MM over six years, Snell is in search of either a longer deal or one with an annual salary of at least $30MM.

While that’s still a reasonably substantial gap, it provides more reason for optimism that the sides could come together on a deal later in the offseason than previous reporting that indicated the sides were nearly $100MM apart in negotiations. Feinsand goes on to note that while other teams have shown interest in the lefty this winter, the Yankees’ offer is only the one a team has formally put forward to Snell this winter. Feinsand goes on to indicate that it isn’t yet clear if the club remains in on Snell after adding Stroman, a possibility that echoes the club’s reported focus on bullpen additions at this point in the offseason.

Still, it’s easy to see why the club would have interest in adding Snell to its rotation. While the addition of Stroman raises the floor of the club’s rotation considerably, the club lacks a surefire front-of-the-rotation arm to pair with ace Gerrit Cole, thanks in large part to the question marks surrounding southpaws Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes after injury-marred 2023 campaigns. Adding Snell, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner who has averaged 27 starts a season over the past three campaigns, would give the club another reliable arm with substantial upside. If the sides aren’t able to come together on a deal, the Giants, Angels, and Blue Jays are among other suitors who could have interest in Snell’s services this winter.

More from the Bronx…

  • Cashman told reporters (including Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News) recently that veteran first baseman Anthony Rizzo is currently cleared for full baseball activities and that doctors are not worried about symptoms of post-concussion syndrome returning in 2024, though he noted that dealing with injuries involving the brain is “tricky.” Rizzo played for over two months after sustaining a head injury in a collision with Fernando Tatis Jr. last May before being placed on the IL in early August. Rizzo slashed an impressive .304/.376/.505 in 53 games prior to the collision before slumping to a brutal .172/.271/.225 slash line in his final 46 games of the year. If the 34-year-old can come close to replicating his early season production in 2024, he’ll be a key fixture in the club’s lineup as the Yankees look to return to the playoffs after missing the postseason for the first time since 2016.
  • As relayed by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Cashman also discussed the health of veteran slugger Giancarlo Stanton with reporters recently, noting the club’s DH is in a “really good place” following his injury-marred 2023 campaign where he slashed just .191/.275/.420 in 101 games. Cashman added that Stanton’s diet and conditioning work this offseason has helped him to prepare for a healthy return to action in 2024. Manager Aaron Boone seemed to echo those sentiments during a recent appearance on the Foul Territory podcast, noting that Stanton is preparing for “occasional” starts in the outfield during the upcoming campaign. While that’s nothing new for Stanton, who has started between 93 games on the outfield grass over the past three seasons, it’s nonetheless noteworthy that he’ll continue to receive those starts in the field even after the club bolstered its outfield mix with the additions of Alex Verdugo, Juan Soto, and Trent Grisham earlier this winter.
  • In his aforementioned appearance on the Foul Territory podcast, Boone also discussed Aaron Judge and his new role as the club’s regular center fielder headed into the 2024 season. The club’s manager expressed confidence in Judge’s ability to handle the everyday center field job as he heads into his age-32 season despite the hulking slugger’s lengthy injury history, though he did note that he hopes to rest Judge at DH or in left field “once or twice a week” with Grisham taking over duties in center. Assuming the club plans on starting Soto in an outfield corner everyday, that would leave just one spot in the club’s outfield/DH mix for Stanton and Verdugo on days where Grisham is covering for Judge in center. Sacrificing starts for the outfield’s other regulars figures to be a worthwhile gamble for the club to take as long as it helps Judge stay healthy, as the team’s captain has slashed an sensational .294/.417/.657 in 263 games over the past two seasons.

Padres have a lux tax over 210m. They are trying to stay under the tax line last reported. So they only have about 25m to spend. They have some holes to fill so they aren’t going to spend it all on a guy like snell.

Also to this point nobody has signed snell cheap org or not.

Snell to the Yankees sounds like they wanted 100m more Yankees said nah…snells market is actually getting pretty small because all the teams listed don’t really need him. Both the most likely Yankees and giants signed other dudes. Blue jays seem to be focused on offense and the angles are just a wild card in any situation.

I’m starting to think he is going to get less than Nola. 125-175 I feel like he will land.

And I’m not a Dodgers fan either, but I appreciate Dodger Stadium as beautiful and a great place to watch a game.

Maybe it’s changed since I was there in 1994, but Anaheim Stadium is a dump by comparison.

Why spend money on overpriced guys well into their 30s?

Once free agent market settles teams will explore trade markets more.

In padres case it makes more sense to trade for a younger cost controlled piece.

Orioles Brewers have some young cost controlled OFs. Padres currently have a surplus of cost controlled pitching:

Seriously? They are barely a mid market team that spent like one of the big boys the last few years. They took a hard shot at a championship but fell short. Be thankful your ownership was willing to do that much. Fans of teams like Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Kansas City etc are happy when their home grown stars are resigned or extended. They don’t even bother to dream about bringing in someone like Machado or trading for someone like Soto. The Padres were in on every big free agent the last few years and even brought in top pitchers and one of the best hitters. You can’t fault them for going back to acting like a mid market team after everything they did still wasn’t enough to get to the WS. Let alone win it.

True. When the Yankees got that guy, I thought he was going to be a beast. Did that ever turn out not to be the case. Coming off an 8 WAR season with Fla before he got to the Yankees, his cumulative WAR the last 4 full seasons plus 2020 is around 4. Not quite as bad as Mo Vaughn with the Mets, but still, epic brutal apart from a decent 2018.

Agree, fact. If he wants to keep his legs in shape get him a stationary bike to ride in the dugout.
His job should only be to walk to the plate 4 times/game and try not to just walk back 2 times.

Stanton was a great hitter when he was young but like Judge being 6’7″ and 270lbs all the running baseball requires was too much for his legs carrying that much body around with them. The reason Judge is still going strong into his early 30s is he didn’t get into professional baseball until he was in his mid 20s. Stanton was with the Marlins at 20. Judge will fall apart just like Stanton in a couple more years and his contract will be a giant anchor. I love watching Judge play today but in 3 years we will wish he had signed with the Giants. At least after 2025 the Marlins start paying a chunk of Stantons contract and his production will look affordable as a DH. The Yankees will have no trouble trading him then they can plant Judge at DH. Assuming Stanton waves that no trade.

That is a good question bleacher creatures. But is typical of the Cashman Yankees in recent years. We cannot know what is going on inside his head, in fact, I don’t think I would want to. it is very possible that as has been said, he previously, he makes these offers that he knows will be declined, but he can say that he made it. And in the unlikely event that the player excepted it, then he is happy to get a player at a reduced rate.

We can hope that Boris will return with a counter offer, and perhaps Cashman will accept it. Because we need Snell, he’s not perfect, but he would round out the rotation very nicely. our championship window is rapidly closing, we need to vastly improve the team now not wait for years for other prospects to mature. Judge is already 32 and Cole is not far behind.

6/$150m is a solid offer. I wonder if Boras even countered. I bet he could have gotten the same contract Rodon got out of Cashman. Snell doesn’t go deep enough into games to justify $30m AAV over a long contract. A big reason Cole makes what he does is he routinely gets you into the 7th. 3 times through the order. Snell only goes twice. $30m is a pipedream and Boras knows it. He is hoping someone gets desperate.

Agreed, brother. Not so sure I see them going $180MM either. Honestly, I would be surprised to see them return to the 6/$150 now that they’ve acquired Stroman, but that’s still a decent total price for Snell’s performance. I mean, Montas got $16MM right? So $25MM for Snell still seems pretty good.

I will say that if Rodon returns to his ‘21-22’ form the rotation will be in really good shape going into the season. It may even be considered on of the better AL rotations overall. I do worry about the depth though because of all their injuries.

I suddenly don’t feel as bad/crazy saying that I would go 4/100 with incentives with Snell anymore. I would give him juicy incentives too. 2mil for making AS team. 7mil for winning another CY. 3mil for being in top 10 CY voting. Etc..

I would be very surprised to see either side agree to such gigantic bonuses for winning popularity contests. It makes much more sense to tie incentives to health first, performance metrics second, and only then a few dollars tied to the votes.

The good news is that next offseason should be a better selection of SPs for the Yanks.

You’re probably correct clipper. Although they still need another starter whether it’s Snell, or even someone of lesser pedigree, it would still greatly improve the team, and it’s starting depth. The pitching stiff as it is, is replete with? And players weeding to be injured. It does not have an up depth for the entire season, unless we wish to give hundreds of innings to AAA or journeyman pitchers.

Another reason why there’s such a competitive imbalance. How many teams can trade away an inexpensive, controllable SP in Michael King to just replace him with a large free agent contract?

It seems unrealistic that the Yankees would be able to sign Snell for 12m less than what they just gave Rodon last year. Better resume and platform year, etc.

Too bad the Orioles won’t spend for a big arm, he’d be a great addition. Plus they would be able to keep their prospect riches to help offset Snell’s salary in years down the road.

Snell would be good for the Yankees. If he goes short outing you have Cole who generally goes deep into games. Get some long guys for the bullpen and you are set to win the division. Already the best offseason in the AL east

Snell would make a lot of sense in Atlanta. I know there is no rumors on that; but with Atlanta set to loose Max Fried to free agency; Charlie Morton to retirement after the season and the unknown about Chris Sale staying healthy.

May not make as much sense in 2024 rotation but 2025 rotation is currently looking at Spencer Strider; Chris Sale and then 2-3 unknown pitchers behind them. The 2-3 behind them in 2025 rotation are either going be rookies with a year or yes experience: pitchers returning from injury or someone they free agent sign.

Atlanta has a lot of money coming off the books after this season

Problem with Snell if you don’t know what Snell you’re getting some seasons he is great and others is average.

Although with the money being handed out lately for pitchers 25 – 30 million range doesn’t seem crazy for a 2 time cy young for a winner wanting a post season run

Wonder if we will at a certain point see snell take a contract with a opt out for less money and years and than opt out again when the market is not odd

I’d amend that to say some seasons he is average, some seasons even a bit below average. His good seasons are very good, but they are the exception, not the norm for him. He’s only exceeded 130 innings twice in his career. And he’s averaged only 4.86 innings per game in the five years between his two CYs.

In his 3 years in San Diego he had a similar thing happen each year. He’d start the first two months or so with an era around 5 and then spend the rest of the season pitching like one of the best pitchers in the game. The biggest difference in 2023 is he flipped the switch a month earlier then the previous years and didn’t miss any starts.

        2021:
        1st half – 4.99 era 16GS, 70IP, 1.55 whip, 11.9 k/9, .768 OPS
        2nd half – 3.24 era, 11 GS, 58IP, 1.04 whip, 11.9 k/9, .588 OPS

        2022:
        1st half – 5.22 era 10 GS, 50 IP, 1.48 whip, 11.9 k/9 .705 OPS
        2nd half – 2.19 era 14 GS, 78 IP, 1.02 whip, 12.1 K/9 .585 OPS

        2023
        1st 9 starts: 5.40 era, 45 IP, 1.55 whip, 9.6 K/9 .818 OPS
        last 23 starts: 1.20 era, 135 IP, 1.06 whip, 12.4 K/9, .489 OPS

Such an interesting arm and going back to the start of the 2022 2nd half Snell has a 2.23 era over those 46 starts, almost a half run better than the next closest arm while pitching 258 Innings (5.6/start). His 86% LOB% is insanely high. Link to those stats:

        fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&st…

The past two years, even including his crappy 1st half, with runners in scoring position opponents have hit .174/.286/.235 over 297 PA’s with only 1 HR. During that same time period with runners on base at all they have hit .193/.293/.269 with only 4 HR’s in 527 PA’s. The least homerun prone starter in baseball in that regard and the only one who strikes out more is Spencer Strider.

        Dude deserves a big bag!

He found his changeup and that changes everything for him. The second thing he did was embrace walking guys. He use to get very frustrated and it would unwind on him.

Now he just says hell with it if I walk him I walk him. Then just gets the next guy out.

Pretty nobody hits the dude so it really doesn’t matter. You can say luck comes in when runner are elf ton base. It’s actually the opposite, runners score when he gets unlucky. The old bloop single can happen to anyone. It’s less likely with snell because of his high strike out rate.

“He’s only exceeded 130 innings twice in his career. ” Not entirely accurate. He pitched 152 innings in 2016 and 173 in 2017, including major and minors. Since 2020 was a short season, he’s actually exceeded 150 innings in 4 of 7 possible seasons. And, diving deeper, in 2021, he lost a good deal of time due to illness, rather than injury. And even in seasons where he has been injured, he’s pitched decently and pitched the majority of the seasons. His risk factor is overrated.

“opt-out”. Given that the signing team has to give up draft picks and international bonus money, I think teams would be reluctant to sign him without the ability to hold onto him for at least a couple of years.

I am, he could theoretically be had for a similar deal to Montas with a team option for 20M next season, or if the MLBPA would allow it, maybe a team opt out if he has any off the field issues during the season. He’s outright said he’d love to pitch in NY. I’d prefer that over Snell at 6 years at 30MM per.

The real competition here is Stanton vs. Grisham. Everyone is penciling in:
    LF – Verdugo
    CF – Judge
    RF – Soto
    DH – Stanton

But a far superior defensive alignment would be:
    LF – Verdugo
    CF – Grisham
    RF – Judge
    DH – Soto

So, is Stanton going to hit significantly better than Grisham to justify sacrificing an elite OF defense? If Stanton keeps hitting like he did last year, the answer is NO.

They should have Stanton take reps at first, wouldn’t hurt to try, especially with Rizzo cratering last year, my 5 kiddos and I were 5 rows back behind home plate in Baltimore when he K’d 5 times directly before going on the IL, he looked to be cruising towards his opt out before the Tatis slide. That would allow for more roster flexibility and not have DJL fake it over there.

It seems relatively clear that the drop-off with Rizzo was strictly a concussion related thing. If he’s recovered this offseason as stated by Cashman, there’s no reason to think he can’t get back to his former self.

Obviously no guarantees in life, but if he’s been given the all clear by doctors, odds are good he’ll make a comeback.

Yes. But he barely averaged 5 innings per start in two of those three campaigns, and averaged fewer than five over the five straight seasons between his two CY years. The simple reality is that, 2 CYs notwithstanding, he is average at best most of the time.

Snell feels like such a volatile pitcher. First time in three 162-game seasons he pitchd over 150 innings after winning the Cy Young. Everyone say that he doesn’t last past the fifth inning, but think about how many pitches you’re throwing if you’re walking about 13% of the batters you face and striking out over 30% of them too. That’s going to lead to high pitch counts early into games.

Snell is good, but that 13.3% walk rate is worrisome. He also had the third lowest BABIP among qualified starters and 41 points lower than what he had in 2020-2022. He danced through the raindrops and got lucky with some batted balls.

Where’s the team to give him the contract Bauer got from the dodgers. Give him like 3 years 100 million with whatever opt outs he wants. Gotta be some team without a lot of future cash on the books that’s light on pitching that can make this decision rather easy.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, I understand why Snell and his reps want to secure 6-7 years at $30M+ AAV, I really do, but…. given how volatile Snell is, he feels like a guy who’s worth $45M one year, barely worth $8M and a 5th rotation spot the next year.

Given that, it’s absolutely nuts to me that the Yankees even offered him six years…. SIX years? Forget whether it’s $25M or $30M or $35M, etc. it’s the guaranteed years and not the dollars that are really a concern.

I feel like a guy like Snell should embrace the idea that he’s worth $40M+ one year, only about $8M another year and go year to year.

I bet if he accepted a 1 year deal, he could get 1 year/$50M and even if he dipped heavily in effectiveness and durability, he could still get 1 year/$15M in 2025 and that’d still be like 2 years/$65M and then if he maintains a less stellar but still decent performance and durability, he might still get another 1 year/$15M so that’s 3 years/$80M, etc. etc.

Anyway- I just feel like if Snell embraced a 1 or 2 year deal with a really high AAV he’d get his annual salary number he wants and even if he had to take a discount later, that excessively high initial salary could balance it out and he could still get 5-7 years on a few shorter term deals, which could add up to 6 years/$172.5M to 7 years/$195M, which is close enough to that $200M he’s seeking.

I just don’t think he can truly justify that full amount guaranteed on a single contract.

Too risky because if he had a down year he would get less or if he got hurt he would get nothing. You always take the long term money vs shorty term high aav.

Look at Bauer, how screwed would the dodger be if instead of the 80+m they gave to buaer for a couple of years if they signed him to a 7/200+ deal. Like what snell wants. Bauer would be way better off and the dodgers would be paying another 100+m for nothing.

I suspect trillionaire ,that someone will come out of the woodwork and offer him an acceptable contract. I have nothing against any of the propositions you have put forward .if it was me, since he seems to want a relatively long-term contract, as is his prerogativeme, since he seems to want a relatively long-term contract,I would not offer him more years, but more money for that six years. The Yankees can easily afford to another 30 million for the six years and see what happens. It might be the best deal that he gets.
And the reality is, he is not perfect, but he is better than anyone else, the Yankees have by a longshot, other than Garrett Cole, obviously. In addition, we need him greatly to solidify this rotation, and to fill innings because otherwise, with the number of starters we have on this team ,that Rarely can pitch more than 100 or 130 innings, or are oft injured, a lot of innings are going to have to go to AAA players, which is less than ideal if you want to be championship caliber . We will see how serious the Yankees are about improving the team, by whether they make an additional offer to him.

Given that the Yankees offered him 6 years/$150M and given that apparently if a team is gonna bother making him an offer, it’s probably going to be long term, I think a final deal might be end up looking complex:

Something along the lines of 3 years/$132M guaranteed at a $40M AAV and a $12M buyout on a $20M mutual option and a player opt out after the first 2 years/$80M that the club can counteract by picking up a 4 year/$145M option to make it 6 years/$225M guaranteed and with with the risk of course being that he could opt out and not get that 4 year option picked up and not get any offers anywhere near those years or dollars and might know he has to ride out the 3 years/$120M and know his bet option is to pick up and have that mutual option picked up to make it 4 years/$140M.

      So basically:

      2 years/$80M or 3 years/$132M or 4 years/$140M or 6 years/$225M.

Once Yankee fans get a real good look at Trent Grisham, they won’t want Judge anywhere near CF. Once they get a look at Grisham’s bat, they won’t want him anywhere near Yankee Stadium.

Blake Snell throws so many pitches and leaves games so early because of so little fair contact w/ his nasty stuff. That plus he isn’t exactly Mr. Pinpoint, but with his arm he need not be.

Still, Padre fans loved the guy but knew to get there by the 5th to see him throw.

Short of running through a faulty wall last season, Judge has not had any significant soft-tissue injuries for three years. Regardless, someone will get injured. Dominguez will return at some point in the second half. These things work themselves out. It’s good to have depth, which they lacked last year.

Seriously, the Orioles should toss an offer at Snell. They need a guy like him and, at this point, who cares if they lose a draft pick? They don’t really need any right now and their pick isn’t high like it used to be.

It sure feels like the Orioles are heading down the Rays road rather than the Astros road.

This was the off-season where the O’s should have spent some money and brought in several impact players to make them a legit threat going forward and a potential destination for future free agents.

Instead, it feels like they’re going to rely on a bunch of kids, at least some of whom are likely to regress.

When Blake starts to Snell, the Vultures will land and pick at his bones. Right now they’re just circling overhead.

I have zero trust in anyone in the Yankees organization to report truthfully on injuries or player health after last season. They’ll insist that someone is healthy as they’re hobbling around the bases.

Lack of trust is not an attitude, it’s a response to repeated incompetence or deliberate concealment by the organization. Trevino’s wrist, Judge’s toe, German’s alcoholism, Rizzo’s concussion, Stanton’s lower body injury that is still yet to be defined… they are not trustworthy when it comes to reporting on injuries so I do not believe what they say until I see it on the field.

I suspect there will be plenty of time to DH Judge and Soto as the season progresses as history suggests Stanton will get injured. They may also eventually turn Stanton into a DH-only vs. LH’d pitchers unless he rebounds. Pivotal year for him.

Valid points, Lord. most likely, the less Stanton plays the better for the team. at this point, he is completely one dimensional player, and he does not do particularly well at that one dimension either unfortunately.

I can see Yankees going 7 years $190 mil. The organization desperately wants to get back to WS. Cole/Snell headlining a rotation will give fans hope. Resigning Soto is a must but who knows?

If they were willing to go that high, they would have done it already. No other team has even made an opening offer yet.

It would be so funny if Stanton kept getting hurt because he just eats pop tarts and drinks Diet Coke all day and now that he’s eating healthy is going to be the second coming of Bonds.

Wonder if Cohen might offer a 2-year deal for $40m+ per year with an opt out after 2024? I don’t think it fits the goals of either Snell or Cohen, but who knows?

A lot of interesting takes in the comments regarding Snell. Now, let me make clear I’ve never been a huge fan of the guy, but it’s undeniable when he’s right the dude can win. I mean one Cy Young could be an outlier in a career, but TWO Cy Youngs is nothing to sneeze at. He’s absolutely right to demand whatever the heck he wants, as long as he’s also willing to negotiate. He can’t prove his worth sitting out the season either. So my bet is he gets his AAV but probably at 2-3 years, maybe with a couple options.

As for the NYY offer, no they didn’t do it just to say they did it. They absolutely knew he wouldn’t take 150, but throwing it out there says to him we’re willing to deal here, so let’s talk further. Meanwhile, his market has gone nowhere so far, so where will Boras go? Back to the team that made the offer. And you can be sure NY will take him. Schmidt does not need to be in the opening day rotation.

Moving on, but following that up, Schmidt is a fantastic backup to have, because the injury questions with Cortes and Rodon will still linger until they start stringing together good starts.

I also worry about the team’s lack of urgency with gathering good backups for the corner spots and DH. I don’t trust Rizzo and Stanton, and even DJ, and be should be focusing on a new 1b for 2025 or earlier. Simply put, there’s too many guys on the roster that need bouncebacks that even with the additions made, I’m just not super confident right now. And I haven’t even mentioned the weakest bullpen we’ve had in years! Can we get that settled already? Yikes.

Yankees are scared to offer 6 years to Snell after the Rodon mistake. Time to bring back Houdini and possibly Peralta

I agree with all your points Salzilla. and just to augment it, I would say that the Yankees seem to operate out of fear, most of the time, rather than with confidence. Just because they made a mistake with Rodon, does it mean they should cringe in fear at signing and other picture especially one of Snells magnitude who has a much better track record than Rodon ever did. I understand the risks, but the Yankees are wealthy enough to absorb it if they chose to.
Just balancing the season on hopes and prayers ,that a bunch of over the hill, under performing players will return the form, is not a strategy. if you’re making enormous investments in Gerrit Cole, Aaron Judge, and even the one year deal with Soto, it is vital, and they surround them with good players. Cashman seems though to continue with his M.O of perpetual dumpster, diving, in the off-season with the hopes of, one of them being decent. he continues to waste the prime years of the aforementioned players, judge is already 32 and Cole is closing in already. As they say, the window is closing rapidly. we cannot afford to operate out of timidity. The Dodgers should be the model that the Yankees are following. They go all in every year.

Thanks. See I’m one of the guys that believes Rodon wasn’t a mistake. I love the guy’s stuff, I just think he was injured too much last year and tried to perform through it because of the pressure of his contract/press/fans.

I agree, Cashman has played too much like a small market team unfortunately due to some of these hefty contracts in recent years, and hasn’t done too great a job at it tbh. Can they absorb it? We’d like to think so, but man it’s a tough ask to pay double anything you do right now. Still, they have to fix their needs and I agree, you can’t go Soto and not try to win. Marcus Stroman dies not scream win to me.

I can understand your point of view. We have to hope that Rodon makes a comeback. what choice do we have, he’s on the team for another five years. And it looks like the Yankees will not be making any other significant additions. He will be a vital cog in their machine. And as a Yankee fan, I hope for the best, but I am prepared for the worst.

He wants 30m? Ok, one year and 30m….take it or leave it. Nobody else is calling. Try again for a multi year next year after you’ve actually pitched two solid seasons in a row without being on the shelf

Why is it important that one of the reporters Cashman spoke to was a particular guy from the NY Daily News?

Why mention one by name and not others?

I love to root against the Yankees and Dodgers respectively, especially how it highlights the team aspect of our wonderful sport. They try to spend their way to a championship every year while that rarely wins the margins, rarely wins when the game is most pressured and competitive, since that involves more than just costly talent, as costly talent often includes an infection of selfishness that takes away from team. That’s also why I love my Dbacks right now.

Why don’t the Yanks sign Clevinger? He was a nice win lost record 60-39 and with a Yankees team maybe 17 wins. ERA not bad.

Snell is in search of either a longer deal or one with an annual salary of at least $30MM.

There’s nothing more pathetic than being a billionaire and being too cheap to give Snell what he wants, as he’s a 2-time Cy Young winner. But then pivot to signing Stroman instead makes it twice as bad
