Blue Jays Reportedly “Monitoring” Blake Snell’s Market

By Nick Deeds | January 14, 2024 at 6:03pm CDT

In the aftermath of the offseason’s top free agent pitcher, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, signing with the Dodgers late last month, the market for #2 pitching free agent Blake Snell has begun to pick up. The Red Sox, Phillies, Giants, and Angels have all been connected to Snell in recent weeks and the Yankees are known to have made an offer for the lefty’s services. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale provides details on that offer, suggesting that while Snell’s camp is seeking “at least $240MM” this winter, the Yankees’ offer came in “nearly $100MM” below that target.

Since those initial connections, both the Giants and Yankees have made rotation additions that might take them out of the market for Snell: The Giants picked up Robbie Ray in trade with the Mariners and signed Jordan Hicks to bolster their rotation mix, while the Yankees added Marcus Stroman to their own starting five. While it’s unclear whether or not either club’s interest in Snell persists beyond those additions, it’s at least fair to say that they’re in a less desperate position regarding starting pitcher than they were a few weeks ago. Even if those two clubs are no longer part of Snell’s market, however, Nightengale suggests that there are “several” teams that remain engaged with Snell’s camp in hopes his hefty price tag will drop as the offseason continues. In particular, he notes that the Blue Jays “have been quietly monitoring” Snell throughout his free agency.

Toronto would be something of a surprising fit for Snell. While the club was among the finalists involved in the Yamamoto sweepstakes, the club has seemed to eschew a more general foray into the pitching side of free agency this winter in favor of bolstering a lineup that lost Matt Chapman, Whit Merrifield, and Brandon Belt to free agency this winter after key bats such as George Springer, Alejandro Kirk, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. under-performed in 2023. By contrast, starting pitching proved to be a notable strength of the Blue Jays’ roster last season as the club was led by ace righty Kevin Gausman and saw strong rebound campaigns from both Yusei Kikuchi and Jose Berrios after difficult seasons in 2022.

With that being said, the Blue Jays made clear they had money to spend this winter with their strong bid for the services of Shohei Ohtani last month and the club’s recent additions of Kevin Kiermaier and Isiah Kiner-Falefa make a strong pursuit of Cody Bellinger or Chapman, the offseason’s best remaining positional free agents, less likely than they appeared to be earlier this winter. With money available and few clear fits in free agency to spend it on, a pursuit of Snell could place Toronto’s rotation firmly among the best in the game. The reigning NL Cy Young award winner, Snell led the majors with a sterling 2.25 ERA in 180 innings of work last season and would create an enviable duo at the top of the club’s rotation alongside Gausman.

A pursuit of Snell would also provide the Jays with protection against potential injury or ineffectiveness that they lack after veteran southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu departed for free agency back in November. While the club’s rotation looks strong on paper, a regression from Kikuchi or Berrios or continued struggles from Alek Manoah after an abysmal 2023 campaign could hamper the club’s ability to emerge from a competitive AL East with a playoff spot next season. Even Chris Bassitt, despite serving as one of the most reliable mid-rotation starters in the game in recent years, threw a career-high 200 frames last year across 33 starts and is entering his age-35 season in 2024. While top prospect Rickey Tiedemann could factor into the club’s rotation mix sometime next season and provide the depth the club’s starting five currently lacks, the addition of another quality rotation piece such as Snell would take pressure off of a 21-year-old hurler with just four innings of work at the Triple-A level headed into what could be his rookie campaign.

Of course, adding a bat-first player to the club’s beleaguered offense is surely a higher priority than a pursuit of any pitcher, and the club may prefer to keep its financial powder dry with an eye on a robust free agent class next offseason that currently projects to include offensive stars such as Juan Soto, Jose Altuve, and Alex Bregman. Nightengale seemingly indicates that the Blue Jays don’t have interest in adding Snell at his current, hefty asking price, and even if the price on his services does drop its likely a rotation-needy club such as the Red Sox or Angels would have more incentive to win a bidding war than Toronto. If the Blue Jays are hoping to add depth to their rotation without breaking the bank, pursuing a hurler capable of swinging between the rotation and the bullpen such as Alex Wood, Jakob Junis, or previously-rumored target Yariel Rodriguez could provide the club with additional depth while leaving the door open to a pursuit of Bellinger, Chapman, or any of next winter’s star free agents.

Apparently he’s asking for $240mm, so maybe 8/240 is what he’s looking for.
Yankees offered “nearly 100” less than that, so they probably offered something like 6/150.
If somebody met in the middle at around 7/200 that probably still isn’t enough for him, especially in a world where Frankie Montas gets $16-18mm AAV.

What is it with this strange preoccupation with talking about the price of certain foods on the internet? It’s like some people are involved in a campaign to convince other people things are more expensive than they are, for some bizarre reason. For the record, egg prices average around $2.50 a dozen right now.

Does anyone think that sometimes a team will delay extending a really good player for a while, in the hope that they have a crappy season or 2 and extend them for a lesser amount?

No I am coming to the sad conclusion that if your team didnt work out an extension they were never planning on keeping that player and poor performance only confirms their tendency to let a player be traded away or reach free agency.

When a team monitors a player that’s code for we gotta pretend we are doing something so we look knowing we have no shot at getting him unless the market crashes and burns

Once again, stories about the Blue Jays “monitoring” and ‘being interested” in specific free agents. These stories are more common with the Jays than any other team, with most of the time it leads to nothing. The Blue Jays obviously like leaking this type of info, yet doesn’t it only lead to fan disappointment?

It’s often not clear who floats these rumours, but at least some of the time, it’s the agents. I’ve often felt that’s why there are so many Jays rumours. They have money, so agents can use them as the boogyman to scare the actual teams bidding on their client to up the ante.

It’s more likely team personnel based on what former FG writer/former HOU exec/current MIN exec Kevin Goldstein wrote about and said during his chats. The higher ups would sometimes float fake rumors to source their internal leaks. He was one of my favorite reads and I learned a lot about the draft process from him.

Jays don’t want or need Snell. I think the Jays want to bump up the price that the Jankees or Rsox have to pay if they sign Snell. Make them pay now and you don’t have to compete with them on players later. I hope the Jankees sign him and have all their starters on the DL at once. Lol!

Perhaps Snell needs to switch tactics and focus on the highest AAV possible with a couple of opportunities to opt out. His two elite seasons are so far apart that teams are naturally wary of locking him up for an extended period of time.

His two Cy Young awards are nice, but he’s extremely erratic. He’ll go from being a starter that’s in 4 ERA range that can’t get to the fifth inning, to going on a run where he drops his ERA in the 2 range and look like an ace. Two extreme variations to him.

You are correct. If you look at his career he is all over the place and I suspect being a Boras client he is looking for premium years and salary.

Last years Cy Young really is a microcosm of his career. I thought I read an article is he is the first Cy Young winner since the 1930’s? To be that high in walks and strikeouts.

I would be nice to see teams finally show, “You’re not worth that.” Instead, there is often one team that bids against itself out of desperation and pays money everyone claims they don’t have.

Boras should not set the market; the market should set itself. I’m frankly surprised that every offseason teams continue to appease players’ desires to be the new top paid person.

It’s nothing against the players or the owners, it’s just a silly expectation in any business.

He’s just not worth what he wants. Two CY and then basically slightly above average. I think teams will pay higher AAV for 2-3 years for mid rotation guys and exorbitant money for the yamamoto types, but the number 2s who think they’re aces may not get overpaid like they want. Hes worth gausman money with inflation for today’s market so 6-160 is about the range.

Good news for the Giants, imho. They’re in a position to offer a little extra if they really want him without it hurting them.

I’m of the opposing opinion – I think the market should correct itself. I don’t know why teams acquiesce every offseason to these demands. Let players sit out until the trade deadline or longer. Eventually they will get the hint that just because it’s a new offseason doesn’t mean you automatically get to set a record contract, which seems to have become expected practice.

If this is actually a possibility, I could see the Jays signing Snell, and then trading Yusei Kikuchi, who has a terrific bargain $10 million contract which would be very appealing to most teams, or Chris Bassitt who is coming off a career high 200 ip and is heading into his age 35 season and would be a #2 on about 20 teams, in exchange for an impact LH or switch hitting bat.

I mean he is decently young but he’s done this before. Won a cy young and turned into nothing special. Too inconsistent. Contract year Cy Young…I don’t buy it. Fool me twice shame on me. If you spend 200m can you afford it to be an inconsistent pitcher who could more easily be below average than a cy young top-5 (tho both are possible)? Wait for Max Fried or someone else.blue jays so geared up to spend big they may just throw it at wrong guy as a fallback. I’ll buy at 3/90 depending on team. Not a penny more. I know it’s “absurd”. It’s his true value tho. At best imo. A year ago he wouldn’t have gotten that even.

My opinion the blue jays would make sense for some bigger name free agents as the blue jays are in the middle of a win now window with their current roster. They probably have 2-3 seasons left with the current roster before it gets shaken up with free agency.

Also the Canadian dollar is gaining on the American dollar in value so there is an increase in spending power of a Canadian dollar when exchanged into US dollars to pay players.

If Snell does not get his market, I can see many more teams involved if he was willing to do a contract like Bauer´s ( 3 year 103M ), he was coming with many ?? and a Cy Young award. The problem is his agent won’t accept, and teams have less money than at the beginning of ST.

Greedy owners and money aside, GMs have got to be tired of giving hefty contracts to pitchers who either get hurt not long after or just stink up the place. Especially to pitchers who we all can feel just ain’t gonna be dominant for years to come. Snell reminds me of Rodon last season. And the Yankees didn’t have fun with that first year at all.

Blake Snell is a rarity, hard to find a comp. Not many pitchers can boast of snagging the CY award in both leagues, especially at his age. Sure, his walk percentage might put off some teams, but you’ve got to look at what’s happening this offseason. Some guys with way less on their resume are raking in big deals, and you know Boras isn’t about to let him leave money on the table. The cost of pitching is at a premium.
Though after Rodon last year, I could see them passing on another big pitching contract, yet they dealt so much depth for Soto, and were all in on Yamamoto, they theoretically still *should* have money to spend and were in on Snell just two weeks ago. Maybe a frontloaded deal with an opt out after 3 years, gets it done?

On the other hand, there’s Trevor Bauer. He’s looking at a one-year “prove it” deal. If the Yankees are serious about winning, they should consider it from a baseball perspective. They should take the gamble, IMO. They signed Stroman, who’s teammates aren’t the most glowing about, by all teammate accounts Trevor is a great teammate, albeit with baggage.

Or maybe they’ll fork out something like 28-30 million over 6-8 years for a pitcher who might deliver a 10% walk rate at 130 innings pitched in Snell, or he could dazzle again. A 4.20 era at 130 IP or a sub-2.00 with 180 IP. That could mean losing a draft pick or two, but it might be a better play than just sitting tight and doing nothing. I still feel Bauer makes more baseball sense, especially after Rodon’s price and production last season. This last point might not be popular, it was initially typed in jest, but…If they snag Bauer, they should also sign Tim Anderson to truly get the trifecta of fan fodder for hate.

Stroman, Anderson and Bauer, Evil Empire baby! *ducks*
