Yankees, Rangers Are “Potential Frontrunners” For Hector Neris

By Nick Deeds | January 13, 2024 at 10:59pm CDT

The market for right-hander Hector Neris may be picking up steam, as MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that the Yankees and Rangers have emerged as potential frontrunners for the veteran’s services.

After spending the first eight seasons of his career in Philadelphia, Neris hit the open market and landed with the Astros on a two-year deal prior to the 2022 campaign. The deal featured an $8.5MM vesting option ($1MM buyout) for the 2024 campaign, but Neris met the appearance thresholds stipulated in the deal to vest it into a player option and declined it earlier this winter, allowing him to depart Houston and test the open market. It’s easy to see why Neris declined the option. The 34-year-old is coming off a dominant season in Houston where he posted a sterling 1.71 ERA (246 ERA+) with a 28.2% strikeout rate in 68 1/3 innings of work across 71 appearances.

While an elevated 11.4% walk rate and an unbelievable 90.5% strand rate both cast doubt on that fantastic performance, as does his 3.83 FIP, looking at the righty’s time in Houston as a whole highlights Neris as one of the more consistent relievers in the game over the past two seasons. In 133 2/3 innings of work since the start of the 2022 campaign, Neris has posted a 2.69 ERA and 3.10 FIP with a 29.1% strikeout rate against a 9% walk rate. That ERA ranks tenth among all relievers with at least 120 innings of work over the past two seasons, while his strikeout rate ranks 14th.

That strong performance during his time in Houston led MLBTR to predict a two-year $15MM contract for Neris on our annual Top 50 MLB free agents list, where Neris was ranked 46th. His market has been fairly quiet this winter, however. While the Astros and Cardinals have both received passing mentions as possible landing spots for the righty this winter, much of the conversation on the right-handed relief market has been focused on Jordan Hicks this winter. With that said, yesterday’s news of a four-year deal between Hicks and the Giants takes the top right-handed reliever off the board and leaves Neris as perhaps the second best righty reliever remaining after Robert Stephenson.

It’s hardly a surprise that the Rangers would have interest in Neris’s services. The reigning World Series champions’ bullpen woes are well-established at this point, as a relief corps that struggled to a 4.77 ERA last year has lost the likes of Aroldis Chapman, Will Smith, and Chris Stratton to free agency. That leaves closer Jose Leclerc as the only reliable, late-inning holdover for the Rangers headed into 2024. While the addition of Kirby Yates earlier this winter should help, Texas will surely need more relief reinforcements this winter if they hope to emerge atop a competitive AL West in 2024 much less return to the World Series. While the club has occasionally been linked to relief ace Josh Hader this winter, the club’s reported budgetary issues could leave the lefty out of their price range, making Neris a more affordable alternative.

By contrast, the Yankees are something of a surprising suitor for the veteran righty. The club’s 3.34 bullpen ERA in 2023 was the best among all major league clubs last year, and while the relief corps lost a key piece in Michael King to the Padres as part of the return for Juan Soto the Bronx bullpen still features the likes of Clay Holmes, Jonathan Loasigia, and Tommy Kahnle as high-leverage arms with Ian Hamilton, Scott Effross, and Victor Gonzalez among those expected to handle the middle innings. Given the strength of that group, it’s fair to wonder if the club’s resources would be better allocated elsewhere, particularly given the question marks remaining in the rotation even after landing Marcus Stroman.

Nonetheless, Andy Martino of SNY confirms that the Yankees are engaged in the relief market at this point in the winter and suggests that a reunion with left-hander Wandy Peralta, who posted a 2.83 ERA despite a 5.05 FIP in 54 innings with the club last year, could be another possible avenue for the team to explore in its search for bullpen upgrades. Martino also notes that the team was heavily involved in the sweepstakes for Hicks before he ultimately settled on heading to San Francisco for a chance to start. With the likes of Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery expected to secure hefty guarantees in free agency and the asking price on trade candidates such as Dylan Cease seemingly out of New York’s comfort zone, it’s possible GM Brian Cashman and his front office have pivoted to bolstering the club’s bullpen as an alternative route to upgrading the club’s pitching staff after focusing on rotation upgrades for much of the winter.

Myself though, usually in the back of the pack. Pretty good sprinter when chased.

My most hated headline wording is “seemingly confirmed.” No. It’s either one or the other.

You could ask “Do Brian Cashman’s comments confirm those big trade rumors?” But even that would be clickbait-ish. Better to just say “Trade rumors gain more validity with latest comments from Brian Cashman.”

By contrast, “potential frontrunners” is just kind of redundant. All front-runners are “potential” because the signing hasn’t happened yet.

You could say “Yanks/Rangers may be frontrunners” — or “Yanks/Rangers are potential landing spots…”

As much as I would prefer Hader, Neris would make more sense, given how close Texas is to the luxury tax threshold. It’s more about the draft pick compensation they would have to give up and what they would get next year than it is about the tax premium.

Neris isn’t a bad fallback option, he’s been anywhere from ok to very good most of his MLB career. His underlying numbers from last year suggest he might regress a little bit but even then he would still be pretty good. I think Kirby Yates will be solid for you guys as well!

The Yankees need a guy like this and snell or Monty. But the fact is do any of them WANT to play for the Yankees..? I don’t think so. I think they will all sign elsewhere. And Soto doesn’t do anything, 7 of the guys in the line up for the Yankees hit around the Mendoza line and don’t walk or get on base. Yankees are sad sorry team. Sad and sorry run team too.

That L’s for himself, and his numbers. He will not make the rest of the team that doesn’t hit and doesn’t score. He’ll put up his usual numbers but they Yankees will continue to struggle until they acquire a new infield that can hit as well as play D.

He hits. But he needs a line up around him that hits- that’s how you win games. AJ hitting .260 and Torres hitting .240 and every other player hitting around the Mendoza line means they will again struggle scoring runs… it’s not a one man game, so- Soto only sells tickets, he doesn’t do anything. He will be gone next season. Probably to Houston or LA. Maybe SF or AZ…. And will sign a long term deal there.

Saying “he doesn’t do anything” indicates Soto isn’t helpful, which he very much is. The phrasing makes it seem like your comment is about just Soto.

Saying he isn’t enough by himself because the rest of the team is full of weak hitters (aside from Judge) would make more sense. As would citing just about any hitting stat besides BA.

@178iq- as Joe stated just the other day, I’m really starting to question if you have that 178iq, with comments like that. I’m sure if Cashman had to do it again, he never would have traded Monty for a player in a walking boot. Boras has Snell thinking he’s a $200 million dollar pitcher, so let him get it from someone else. The White Sox want to move Dylan Cease, but he definitely isn’t worth some teams #1 or #2 prospect in their organization. Good luck with that. It’s definitely not happening, especially with Cease coming off a bad year. Smh.

What they need is health. DJ, Rizzo, Stanton and Rodon need to have fuller seasons. Soto and Verdugo are replacing Bader, Cabrera and company in the lineup and along with Torres are in contract years. I’m highly optimistic they’ll have a plus lineup.

It’s Josh Hader or bust!! Neris is like Holmes, Loaisiga, and most of the other arms in the Yankee’s bullpen good but not realistically a shutdown arm that could consistently handle the ninth inning in a playoff series.

yankees don’t need josh hader. dudes gonna want 18-20mil a season and the only thing the yankees get in return is a horrible contract. If Cashman is somewhat a knowledgeable guy (which he is), he’d know that it would be a bad idea. It’s definitely not “Josh Hader or bust!” Because the yankees would be dodging a huge bullet if they don’t sign him.

Why is it that Hader would be a bad contract? The Yankees have had good returns on elite closers on such guys like Mariano Rivera. Aroldis Chapman was also extended after his first contract with them expired. How should the $18MM-$20MM be better spent?

YBC: I know this isn’t a possibility right now, but I’d love for the Yankees to explore a trade for Ryan Helsley of the Cards. He’s 29 with two years of control remaining, but I doubt the Cardinals would trade him this early.

Yankees tend to do well with MLB players from Oklahoma….

@Yankee Clipper Helsley wouldn’t be a good fit in NY. He mentally couldn’t even pitch against the Braves because of their tomahawk chop. There is no way he’d be able to handle The Bronx. If he screws up his first couple outings, hes going to turn into a Rodon clone. Better off going for the sure fire option in Hader or trading for a more experienced closer like Kenley Jansen (who I don’t think is that good but hes better than what the Yankees currently have)

Sign…..Chapman?! I was with you until I read that name, brother. Chapman, while he is elite defensively, has an anemic bat. Yankees have not done a very good job coaching up their offense, and they already have defensively adept IFers without paying Boras Tax on a Chapman signing, imho. They have a defensive stud in Peraza; they had a very good defensive 3B in Donaldson; and there are other players they could probably trade for that would play a decent 3B that could do more in the lineup, like Yoan Moncada.

I just don’t see a Chapman fit on the Yankees. Although, with Cashman running the ship, it wouldn’t surprise me…

Neris was right on the fringe of giving up some potential big innings last year. There were several instances where he left 2-3 runners on base. After taking a bath on the Montero contract, I can understand them being cautious with Neris.

Neris kind of reminds me of Pedro Strop. Can be very dominant, but at times can give you a heart attack with base runners on board. In comparison to Montero, Neris definitely has the better track record. I also think he is best suited in a 7th/8th inning role, not the closer.

Not liking the fact that his K% is dropping from his career average (30.1 K%, 8.9 BB%). vs. 2023 28.2 K% and 11.4 BB%. He did limit exit velocity though in 2023 to 86.5 from his career of 88.3. Guy’s FRA has been fairly consistent around the 3.80 mark. With his age, I think he gets a 2 yrs, $15M deal.

Few better examples of the volatility of RP than Mr Neris. Got to see some of his up and down live and in person for PHI. Good for him he found his form and will cash in

Relievers aren’t much more volatile than starting pitchers if we slice the latter’s performance into 50-70 inning batches.

Adjust for luck, and the ‘difference’ shrinks even more.

Except for his 2023 year, in which I think he overperformed in hopes of getting a really big payday, he’s been surprising consistent for a reliever. Normally, those guys last a few years and then fall off a cliff. That ERA-FRA is essentially telling you that he pitched to his ERA and we wouldn’t exist significant drop in his performance. Given 2023, I would expect some negative regression back to the mean of 3+ ERA.

Year ERA xERA FRA ERA – FRA
      2015 3.79 3.91 3.89 -0.10
      2016 2.58 3.48 3.65 -1.07
      2017 3.01 3.98 3.68 -0.67
      2018 5.1 3.81 3.34 1.76
      2019 2.93 3.14 3.68 -0.75
      2020 4.57 3.87 4.63 -0.06
      2021 3.63 2.94 3.75 -0.12
      2022 3.72 3.29 3.83 -0.11
      2023 1.71 3.33 3.74 -2.03

@Old York Fwiw it’s largely myth, that players perform better during their walk years. They perform very, very much in line with their projections.

Try educating the public on that one. You’ll get about as far as you would explaining how peak years in MLB, on average, are 26-27.

I’m not suggesting this case to be true in 100% of the time. I’m just showing you that he pitched to his actual career average for the 2023 season, however, his ERA was actually much lower. For the general public, they’ll look at that 1.71 ERA in 2023 and wonder why in 2024, he isn’t as good. In 2023, he was overperforming his career average.

I will get downvoted for this. But please, please stop writing “the likes of” so much. It’s multiple times in this post and has been in many others. Alternatives are plentiful: “other pitchers such as,” “bats in this cost range,” “relievers with these qualities.” I know the content matters more than the language but I started noticing and can’t stop! Love the site and been coming pre-Ben Nickelson-Smith, so this critical comment comes from a place of care.

I would FAR rather pursue Stephenson than Neris. He’s younger, he’s got better stats this season, and I like his potential a lot more. That being said, if we don’t get one of the top remaining starters for our rotation, I’m all about getting Hader. I don’t care that he wants $18-$20 million AAV. He’s one of, if not the best, reliever in baseball right now when he’s on. He had a filthy season in 2023. I also don’t care that he won’t pitch anyplace except the 9th inning– if we already have two headcases acquired, what’s one more? Can’t be worse than Stroman for sure.

Hader was on the top of my reliever list for several years (like many baseball fans); but I assumed, with Cashman’s strength of building good ‘pens and the fact Hader is represented by Boras, the Yankees would not be serious contenders for Hader.

I do understand that there may be some issues with Hader; but one thing he seems to be is postseason ready, unlike Chapman.

I think there are several relievers that could perform as well as Hader and cost much less, but the Yankees would need to part with valuable trade pieces to get them. Helsley is one of my current favorites, but I’m not so sure the Cards would part with him. A lot of folks in Yankee Land seem to like the Brewers current closer, Williams, too.

The Cards are not going part with Helsey very easily based on the fact that they signed Gibson and Lynn so early and are trying to back into the thick of things.

I agree that they don’t need Hader. I’m fine with Holmes, Johnny Lasagna, and Kahlne. Marranacio could also have a better year since he was battling injury last season.

I think that there are two major pitching linchpins this season: the first and most important is obviously Rodon; the second, on the RP side, is going to be either Hamilton or Effross. One of those two need to perform to his peak capability.

But, I should’ve clarified, I don’t see STL parting with Helsley at this point; I could see it happening if they have another bad season and aren’t in the running at the trade deadline, although I still think it is unlikely.

Clipper,I would like to see the Yankees, for once, go all in on someone, it’s obvious what they need. These half measures, like Stroman, are just their reverting back to their typical M.O., and will result in the same outcomes as the last few years. I think they will be better than last year, it’s regression to the mean, after all, but moves like this one, Nerid,or Stroman, will not get them to the top, once again IMHO.
Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, are not getting any younger, and I doubt Soto will be here for more than one year, so it could be now or never. Get Hader, or Snell, or someone of that ilk. give them real offers, not offers, that you know they’re going to decline ,because they’re so off the mark, as the Yankees have been doing this far.
Sorry, about the length of this post, but building a super bullpen is OK theoretically, if you are not going to go all in on starting pitching, but let’s not forget who will be managing the bullpen, the inept Aaron Boone. that is probably his worst managing skill. Im getting frustrated , watching him, bring in the wrong reliever to face a batter.

No matter how good theoretically, the guys in the bullpen are, watching him year after year leave arms in too long, while they are being battered, without anyone warming up, and then, finally bringing them out with the game is out of reach, is getting old. Not to mention, watching him, bring in an inning eater to face the top or middle of the order, in a pivotal point of the game like there’s no urgency, I don’t know how much more of this I can take.

While Josh Sborz could be part of the late inning mix in close games for the Rangers, assuming they’re not going to spend for Hader you start running out of options for late innings quickly once you get past Stephenson and Neris. I hope the Rangers get 1 of those 2.

I’m a big fan of wandy, and think the yanks should bring him back, screw his fip, advanced metrics etc. this is where the Yankees analytics department always over does it. Who cares? He has shown time and time again, for one that he can pitch in new York, and for two that he consistently keeps runs off the board. For the past three seasons he’s pitched under a 3 era. What more do you want from him? He’s a very good bullpen piece, and has been a critical part of why the Yankees bullpen has been so darn good the past few seasons. He’s pitched better for the Yankees than any other team he’s been with. Instead of the Yankees going after a more expensive neris, why not bring back a known commodity that you know will pitch well and keep your team in the game?

Fip is dumb. It is an extremely bias stat. Sierra is at least better. I hated the days of wins, and average as the go to stats but these “advanced” metric thinkers (many of them) do nothing but spit out the same in every article. They tell us the era and k rate then tell us the fip and strand rate. That is hardly advanced analysis and in fact extremely bias. Sure the strand rate is good to know. At least add Sierra and tell us about any change in pitch mix or what pitch they are getting hit on. The change in use of pitches is what most often changes these relievers for the better. Look at Pierce Johnson for instance. Even better add a sweeper, even if your getting killed on it like Lynn, and there is optimism in their minds. “You mean he has a sweeper and he strikes guys out! He must be unlucky. What’s his fip…a stat relying largely on K rate?” Smh. The worst part is they are holding k rates against pitchers from other eras with 1000s of innings. Who cares at that point. Tim Hudson is as good as Sabathia, for instance. One will get in hall quickly and one got 5 percent. It’s not just NY. It’s the Ks. Neither are HOFers imo. Talk of Strider being the Cy Young last year was absurd, for instance. Only based on one stat. Sure he’s well on his way. But how can any rational human think this is intelligence? The pendulum has gone too far the other way. It’s important to keep saying it until people realize it.

He is a good reliever at times but watching him in Philly, I found him to be inconsistent and unreliable in the 9th. He then became very predictable n pitch sequence. Teams like the Braves hammered him. What’s he’s done in Houston is good for him and they had a deeper pen the past few seasons than the pens he was in with Philly during the pre Kapler yrs, the Kapler yrs then the Girardi yrs. Hicks was the best rightly reliever/closer type on the board. Everyone else left is just a wish, prayer and a $10mil contract just because. Again, I like Neris but not as the solo closer. He needs to be in a strategic, strong pen to succeed. If it’s just Him a setup guy and a 7th inning dude, I’m the traditional sense, it will expose him.

Neris now takes the place of Hicks in the rumors. Still think they be better off going for Hader as one last big signing moving Holmes down to the 8th. Personality wise probably isn’t a fit, but if there’s money to be made, I think they’d make it work. Neris would give them the option to switch on and off with Holmes, and I’d take that, but eh, you have a lights out closer out there…

Neris is an egotistical chest pounder just like biggest cheater in baseball Cole and Rodent and to a lesser extent Sure Lock Holmes. Dr. Boonedoggle would quickly put him every game possible and then wonder why he had an owie and couldn’t pitch. Then he would get to say things like, “We hope he can resume baseball activities soon”, or “We’re confident he’ll pitch again this season”, or just “Blub blub blub”.
