6:52pm: According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic, the Giants made an offer to Martinez while they were already in talks with Soler and Martinez’s camp made a counteroffer that San Francisco brass “weren’t comfortable with.” The specifics of both the club’s offer to Martinez and Martinez’s counteroffer remain unclear, though Pavlovic’s report seems to indicate that Martinez’s apparent lack of interest in San Francisco may have had more to do with the deal’s value than soft factors such as geography or club competitiveness.
12:04pm: The Giants made J.D. Martinez a contract offer at some point this offseason prior to the team’s deal with Jorge Soler, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports. Martinez rejected the offer because he “didn’t want to go there,” Heyman writes, which could indicate any number of concerns (roster fit, playing time, geography, etc.) beyond perhaps any misgivings about the value or nature of the deal the Giants put on the table.
It is safe to assume that San Francisco didn’t offer Martinez anything akin to the three years and $42MM that Soler received, given that Martinez is entering his age-36 season and is four and a half years older than Soler. That said, the two players have similar profiles as right-handed hitters with defensive limitations in the field. Martinez is essentially a DH-only player at this point in his career, and the bulk of Soler’s time in the Marlins’ 2023 lineup was spent as a designated hitter.
Though Martinez has had more streakiness and variance in his performance as he has aged, he has still been the more consistent hitter than the notoriously inconsistent Soler. Both players were All-Stars and 33-homer hitters in 2023 and had interestingly similar numbers, as Martinez had a 135 wRC+ while hitting .271/.321/.572 in 479 plate appearances for the Dodgers and Soler hit .250/.341/.512 over 580 PA with Miami. Martinez’s playing time was limited by groin and back problems, and Soler had much better walk and strikeout rates than Martinez, even if Soler’s 24.3 K% was still below average.
Soler and Martinez weren’t far apart on MLBTR’s list of the offseason’s top 50 free agents, as Soler was ranked 16th and Martinez 20th. The age gap was one of the determining factors in the differing rankings, and we predicted a smaller annual average value for Soler (with a three-year, $45MM projection) than Martinez (two years, $40MM). Of course, it now seems entirely possible that Martinez will end up falling behind Soler in AAV given that we’re in the last week of February and Martinez still remains unsigned.
The Blue Jays, Mets, Angels, and Diamondbacks have all been linked to Martinez’s market at various points this winter, though Toronto and Arizona have since already added other veteran bats (i.e. Justin Turner, Joc Pederson, Randal Grichuk) for the DH role and no longer seem like fits. MLBTR’s Anthony Franco recently broke down possibilities for Martinez’s next landing spot and listed the Mets and Angels as still the most logical destinations based on team need, even if both clubs have indicated they would prefer to use the DH spot to cycle many players through the lineup. Heyman suggested the Rangers as a possible candidate for Martinez, though Texas also has a lot of promising up-and-comers in need of at-bats.
Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has been generally conservative with free agent expenditures during his five-plus years in charge of San Francisco’s front office. As the Contract Tracker indicates, this winter’s signings of Jung Ho Lee and Jordan Hicks marked the first time that Zaidi signed a player to a deal of four or more years. Speculatively speaking, it seems plausible that Zaidi first checked on the possibility of signing Martinez or another known Giants target in Rhys Hoskins before agreeing to go to three years to land Soler.
From Martinez’s end, we don’t know enough about the Giants’ offer to gauge whether or not he might’ve erred in not accepting the deal, or if accepting it at some unspecified earlier point would’ve taken him off the market much earlier. However, if Martinez just wasn’t interested in playing for the Giants in particular, money might not have been the issue whatsoever.

There are pockets in every urban area.
In LA and SF’s cases the pockets are immediately surrounding the ballpark and really most of the city.
So a ball player would need to have quite a commute to get to work or leave his family behind.
Much different than us normal folks who have potential workplaces all over town.

Unfortunately, this thread is a microcosm of the greater US population as it pertains to politics: their primary goal is to divide us and keep us (the voting populous) fighting over political ideologies by using hot-button issues from slanted viewpoints. It’s not to make the country better as a whole.
Politicians want power and money, so the more people simply buy into the overall political narrative, the more likely they are to simply click either red or blue, irrespective of the actual candidates’ qualifications or political record.
So many political issues that people & politicians discuss have been disproven, yet are still cited as fact-based voting points.
We are losing the country because we have bought the narratives of both sides lock, stock, and barrel. Politicians have made millions (or more) off of completely disproven talking points, yet they’re still given the utmost credibility.
The decline of the country is evident. It’s economically, politically, and socially collapsing. Each elections reflects the greater divide. Each major Court decision reflects the team narrative.
Politicians are usually lawyers by trade, and they’ve turned our country into a courtroom with no facts, no right or wrong; just arguments to be made from a perspective one can simply justify however one wants.
There are no news outlets left. Fox, MSNBC, CNN, etc, are all repeating opinion-based propaganda.

Clipper is 100% right. We have an unhinged con man going up against a career politician who doesn’t have our best interests at heart. It’s a pathetic representation of what this country needs.

Sorry Clip, but the economy is doing great and my investments are earning 20% per year over the last 2 years. Try and twist things however you want politically, but the American economy is booming.
Yankee Clipper
Ella, I wasn’t referring to the interest in your personal investments, and I wasn’t twisting anything “politically,” since I addressed both main parties. I was referring to the overall state of the economy, which has progressively gotten worse because we are accumulating insurmountable debts which will eventually collapse the economy. It’s simple debt to income ratio. But, to clarify, since YOU are making money that means the American economy is doing well?

Geez people, grow up a little. His decision most likely had nothing to do with his views of SF as a city or even the relative prospects of the team this season. The ballpark there is not a good one for right handed hitters unless you’re pretty much a dead pull one. Balls to right-center die in gloves. That’s primarily where JD made his living in his prime years, driving the ball to right-center. Signing with SF would likely be setting himself up for one of his worst batting years.
Pete'sView
Simply not true. LH hitters in the past, perhaps. But that’s not even true now.

As a lifelong baseball fan I would assume you know JD’s current WAR & BA are higher than Soler, and he only hit 3 fewer HR’s than Soler. Same with career numbers, way better for JD than Soler’s up & down seasons, a few of which he hit under 200
slogar1
He’s also 4 years older than Soler and JD played much of his career in Boston. Career wise, Martinez way past his prime, Soler coming off a career year. Case closed.
websoulsurfer
Martinez had a better season than Soler in 2023. You don’t even want to look at the last 3 because it really makes Soler look like a schlub compared to MArtinez.

That’s why Zaidi tried to sign Martinez, shorter deal.

That’s one of the reasons Buster Posey retired early. That, and because he’s SAWFT
websoulsurfer
Posey retired early because being a catcher takes a toll on the body AND he made a reported $800 million from an investment in BodyArmor when CocaCola bought the company and he had an opportunity to be an owner of the Giants instead of a player.
It may have been even more than $800 million. Kobey Bryant invested $6 million and his estate was paid $400 million. We know that Posey invested more than any other player including Bryant that that he took shares in the company in lieu of $2 million in endorsement money.
Either way he made a huge investment in the Giants that bought him a 10% share in the team.

Absolutely right suitcase-
Its obvious that most of the commentators have no idea about the Bay Area==
a lot of the Giants live down the peninsula, about 20, 30 minutes from the park=or the East Bay where tony towns like Orinda and Danville exist—
am i saying SF, or for that matter, any big city doesnt have homeless problems, no–
But these players, other than possibly driving thru the city to get to the park, dont have any connection to the city itself, unless they want to live in exclusive areas like Sea Cliff or the such–
they and their families live outside the city proper for the most part,
and PS–i wouldnt want to go 20 minutes west of SF unless you like to snorkel!!!!..lol
HEHEHATE
Really smart move on his part. He’s have to rely heavily on the batting average on his next contract because of the lack of power he’d produce. This is what makes J.D. a pros pro and Soler a fool because that 3 years gonna kill him in his mid-late 30s on his next potential deal if at all.
filihok
Hehe
Why do you think that you are smart enough to see that the stadium will negatively impact his stats but teams in 2025 won’t?
They aren’t looking at his batting average and home runs
HEHEHATE
If Soler flops because of what I believe his ability actually is, the ball park, his health etc I think that’s more than a justification on why I’d take J.D. over soler. Farhan agrees with me which is why as an aging veteran slugger you need two calling cards out of three. The ability to hit, the ability to produce power consistently, and lastly the ability to field and/or to stay healthy. I only see one of those out of Soler at best.
My moneys on Martinez. Which is why It wouldn’t surprise me in the least after this deal solers out of baseball and Martinez is still collecting checks. He’s just the vastly better player even at this point of his career.
You could say it comes down to the player, but this is all about a smart agent knowing what’s best long term for his client.
Martinez will get a deal regardless. Soler only had a handful of options to begin with.
I have made my argument before about the stadium. The last 30hr hitter was bonds in 04. Soler is absolutely no Barry bonds not by a long shot. You can’t play him much in the of either considering the dimensions and his defensive ratings so he’s a mediocre power hitter w a below .250 avg that’s giving you low-mid 20s at best. For three years and a plus 40 contract. Just don’t see this one aging well at all in the least.
The negative on Martinez is the power regression the lack of stable of ability, but the guy can hit apples to oranges you aren’t getting much of any benefit on the minuscule power difference for what Martinez brings to the table.
filihok
Hehe
You…uh…didn’t address my question
Everyone knows how the stadium impacts offense
Si, why would it tank anyone’s value to play there?
Teans are not looking at batting average age HR’s to judge batters. They are looking at exit velocities, strike zone judgment, etc.
Who cares what stadium he plays in and how it impacts their offense?
HEHEHATE
When you pay a guy 40 million+ to be a power hitter and history shows it’s gonna take steroids to get to 30 it’s an over priced contract. You can hit the heck out of the ball, but if you can’t make enough contact it’s all useless. His history shows he can’t stay healthy and he’s not a consistent hr threat throughout his career. If Soler hits +30 in sf I’ll eat my words, but when baseballs focus is better pitching over better offense I think I’m fine on that one.
filihok
Hehe
Wut?
Here’s your original statement
“Really smart move on his part. He’s have to rely heavily on the batting average on his next contract because of the lack of power he’d produce.”
If you know the stadium is going to decrease his power numbers
1) don’t you think teams do as well?
2) assuming you answered “yes” to 1), why would teams rely on his batting average and not things like his quality of contact when deciding his 2025 value?
HEHEHATE
In his late 30s I don’t expect Martinez to be a regular 30+ threat, but at 32 to know that threat is being diminished from Solers value already doesn’t justify the sign other than desperation.
Apparently enough of you think 2023 Jorge Soler is the Real Jorge Soler. Me I’m loudly against that statement and the career number disparity, ball park dimensions, and power history in the park itself are not favorable to Soler.
You are betting against Barry Bonds on steroids numbers. Who even in that very same 04 season was just as dangerous stepping into the batters box with a bat as he was without it. If you need the reference check out Jon Bois who is a fantastic sport geek when it comes to this stuff.
I believe other teams did understand the limitations of Soler because he’s going to be walking the streets of San Francisco the next three years.
In case you haven’t noticed it’s worse than La from the rent hikes, boosting, drug epidemic and homelessness. I don’t blame JD at all for not wanting to be around that, but I don’t think solers 25 value and beyond improves from this contract in the least
Guys make decisions all the time for various reasons. Latest examples around this are Kershaw and Sale preferring proximity over anything.
And to your last point when you compare two similar yet different profiles you decide what they do for you best how they improve your line up and club house culture. Is BA the end all evaluation no, but when we’re looking at a 6 time all star, 3x silver slugger, World Series champion w a career 290 avg vs a 1 time as 2 ws championships and a WS Mvp w a 240 career avg. I’m gonna take option a and most if not all would agree with me.
I’ve been fooled by Miguel sano. Jorge Soler doesn’t fool me for a minute. You can look at you’re advanced metrics all you want. Soler just is what he is a guy that can barely hit enough to stay in the majors has the power when/if healthy but when you’re playing against the deck stacked against you with arguably the goat feel free defend him all you want. He’s fools gold to me and most of baseball apparently. But if you think quality of contact is going to make him Barry Bonds 2.0 maybe you should be the one fixing the Rockies or white Sox front offices then.
filihok
Hehe
Wut?

mab51357
Possibly. We’ll know more at the end of the season, depending on whether Martinez signs before too long. As a long time fan of the Giants and with all the FA misses including the few who did sign recently, I would’ve been happy with JD or Soler. Either one at least gives us a diffetent lineup than last year. Not necessarily better but different.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
You are mostly correct, except if being in a stadium that is a bad fit results in you getting fewer at-bats to demonstrate your skills – plus some owners may go with their gut rather than stats. No doubt it was easier being JD in the Dodgers stacked lineup than being Soler at Loan Depot. Easy to dig deeper and see who hit well to the oppoite field who is showing mor eprojected decline for 2026, most but not all decision-makers do. That is a bet that I would like to take. Soler is in MLB, either active or IL, during 2024 to 2026, traded is ok.

Why does a player saying he doesn’t want to go there – either meaning the team or the city or both – prompt such sensitive, emotional attacks and defensive mechanisms on a baseball post?
Lighten up people.
larkraxm
Because it is a right wing talking point that is a dog whistle for the crowd that doesn’t like facts but lives on anecdotal evidence that isn’t true to begin with. They cannot help but respond in the way that they have been trained when they hear the whistle.
Longtimecoming
Lark – I think point applies to both extremes – not just one side.

larkraxm
Sure. The dog whistle response from one side when they hear the word San Francisco triggers the conditioned response on the other side when they hear the dogs howling. It is tired and old and contributes to the division in the country that we are all tired of. Everybody needs to lighten up! We are playing baseball again as of today!

There are so many reasons he could’ve turned it down.
Might’ve been a lowball offer. He might be looking for a final home rather than one year. He might have geographic preferences.
Or any combination.

I feel Scott Boras has got himself into quite a pickel half way between first and second. 5 major free agents, Scott misjudged how much affect uncertainty in revenues would have. He’s promised clients things, he has two starting pitchers, 2 position players and a DH. All teams know this and no player is receiving what they wanted. Now players have to choose the best upsetting offer available. Waiting longer will only result in teams wanting an even larger discount. Mlb would survive without the players but would the players survive without a club to play for? If I was a player I’d have my representative (may have a new one) find one or two teams most interested and get best deal possible in next week. Maybe ask each club for their best offer and go from there. Boras is throwing up thinking of a club having the upper hand as they currently have!
Tigers3232
What specifically did Boras promise ant of the 5 players? Ans how did you verify this information you certainly do not have??

People want to make his decision on politics, what if JDM didn’t like the culture the Giants have within the organization? Perhaps JDM felt one way and the Giants conduct themselves in another?
Whether you agree or not, Martinez is looking for one last shot. If being too particular costs him one more season in the show, so be it.
Mustard Tiger
No. He didn’t want to dodge human feces on his way to the ballpark.
its_happening
That’s why you hire a driver for a season. But yes, San Fran has become a crap hole thanks to its voting record by the people.
semut
He’s a couple years numbers but Soler’s numbers aren’t nearly as good (or consistent) as JD’s, so I don’t get all the “Glad he didnt come here” talk. 2023 avg & WAR belong to JD. Soler hit more HR’s in ’23, but not by many (36 to 33). The biggest factor for me is Soler’s constant up-and-down career. You never know if you’re getting .270 Soler or .185 Soler, it can swing wildly from season to season with him, while JD tends to put up MUCH more consistent numbers.
I don’t really have anything against Soler but I know what I’m getting with Martinez, and it’s much more of a crapshoot with Soler
Homer_Heins
If money isn’t an issue, then hire another agent that will get a deal done with a team like the Dbacks. I am sure they would do a team friendly deal that is filled with incentives requiring him to play well enough to get the ABs. It’s not importable to imagine if Joc develops his defense under McKay, who has turned average guys into GG. After all, Joc said that is why he signed with them.

websoulsurfer
Martinez has already said he wants to play for a contender. He doesn’t believe that the Giants can be a contender. Do you?
foppert2
Yes. They contended for all but a few weeks of last year and are better.
websoulsurfer
Thats funny. Thanks for the good laugh.
Jean Matrac
If you’re going to refute someone else’s point, it might have at least a little credibility if there was something substantive. What foppert2 posted is a based on fact.
websoulsurfer
They were never close in 2023. Finished 21 games out. In what way have they gotten better? Have you looked at their pitching staff? As of today, they are projected to win 81.5 games.
Jean Matrac
They were only 2 1/2 GB on August 3rd. If you follow the link, you’ll see they were a solid WC competitor until halfway through August.
mlb.com/standings/regular-season/division/2023?dat…
They did fall apart after 8/15, but it appears you’re putting more relevance on their W/L% of .359 over the final 42 games, than their W/L% of .533 over the first 120 games. And it’s arguable that the 15-27 record to end the season had more to do with Kapler’s clubhouse than their ability.
They’ve improved in that the guys they let go were unproductive in 2023. They’ve added power in Soler, and improved defense with Lee, who also is a prototypical lead-off guy.
Projections don’t like inexperience, and that is the case with the Giants. The Mets were projected to win 94 games, the Cards 91, the Yankees 89, the O’s 80, the Rangers 79, and the Marlins 74 games in 2023. Projections are unreliable.
I don’t expect them to win the division. I don’t favor them for a WC either. But I do think they can be in the mix.
foppert2
Nice work, Jean. I just couldn’t be bothered ! Thank you.
Also giving the clubhouse control to a really well respected manager.
websoulsurfer
I am saying they finished 21 games back of the Dodgers. They were projected to win 82.5 games last season and 81.5 this season. They didn’t get better. They slid back slightly. Their pitching staff is barren.
websoulsurfer
You mean a “hands-off” manager. Melvin was the reason for the Padres franchise record worst record in 1 run and extra inning games. Same guy who doesn’t even have mandatory practices for players and has no situational BP or situational battery drills that I have ever seen.
We saw what happened in September after the Padres players only meeting after returning from the St Louis series. The players revolted. Went to the GM and owner and Melvin was basically benched. Christenson, Flaherty, and Niebla were making the calls and the team started winning. Giants are welcome to him. No Padres fan I know is shedding any tears over him going north.
Jean Matrac
Lets go back to the subject, and not discuss the red herrings you introduced. You took issue with the post from foppert2, that they “contended for all but a few weeks of last year”. My post backed that up with facts.
How far they finished behind the Dodgers, or what they are projected to do this season is irrelevant. The fact remains that they did contend last season until the final weeks. They were still tied for a WC spot on 9/3. So you’re wrong, and foppert2 was correct in his post.
foppert2
We’ll see. There might have been a reason Melvin took a hands off approach in the Padre clubhouse. A place where closers can dictate when and how they are used. The notion that an 18 year really well respected major league manager is a one trick pony is ludicrous.
Zaidi could not have made it clearer that Melvin has total control of the Giants clubhouse. That wasn’t a coincidence. He only said it 4 times. Sort of gave me the impression that is Melvin’s preference.
foppert2
lol at barren. No. Plenty of new seedlings. Unlike Webb, some even make the lists ! They may wither, they may flourish. I don’t know, you don’t know. But it’s not barren.
tedtheodorelogan
They are an organization that is flailing in the wind with no realistic shot at competing for the division for the foreseeable future. They have one starting pitcher and a bunch of question marks. They spent money on a dude who has never played in the majors and who was hurt a big portion of the seasons in Korea last year, a relief pitcher with whom they are going to experiment, and an inconsistent and often injured DH. Not many reason to want to join this franchise, and that doesn’t even take into consideration what a disgrace the city is these days. As a lifelong Giants fan and bay area native who still lives here, I wouldn’t want to play for the Giants either if I was Martinez, or any other MLB player.

At this point in the off-season/season the remaining guys are likely looking at far less on there deals. I wouldn’t mind if the jays added JD to be the DH for 1 year and Turner played more in the field at 3rd or 2nd. They also should look at adding snell on a Short term deal maybe 3 or 4 yrs with an opt out after 1 and 2 and trade Kikuchi. I’m not saying any of this is likely but I am saying that these circumstances change what the team should be willing to do. The real issue is Bichette isn’t an amazing SS so having JT flanking him means IKF should play the other side to make up some defensive value lost. Bo is better to his 2B side then 3b so ideally if this happened JT would need to play 2B more IMO

Ok first off the median house price in San Francisco is a little over a million dollars, median income is a little over $100,000.00. San Francisco is NOT a rat infested outhouse. Secondly while it’s great sport to rag on progressive policies as being the cause of it’s problems saying that the same policies are common throughout the country is ridiculous. Republicans in New York are much different than Republicans in Texas, the same with Democrats. I live in New York and it hasn’t suffered from Democratic policies. Honestly 3/42m is not as absurd as it sounds for JD (it could get you a better AAV) and although he won’t get it I don’t think Soler is necessarily going to be any better over that time span. JD is underrated by WAR. He doesn’t hurt you defensively (because he doesn’t play defense) and to be able to insert a 900 ops player into the lineup playing almost every day is a luxury that many teams should be jumping at (even if he regresses a bit). This is a generational hitter. A career 133 ops+. We have seen many of these types perform well into their late 30s and he showed the opposite of regression.
Jean Matrac
I wouldn’t say he’s shown the opposite of regression. He isn’t the same hitter he was in the 6 seasons from his age 26 through his age 31 seasons. During that peak he averaged a 154 OPS+.
And even though last season was his best out of the last 4, over that time he’s averaged a 121 OPS+. He is in decline, though it’s gradual, not drastic, and he is still a good hitter.
Rishi
I meant for who he is now. I know he’s declined in comparison to his peak. But for what he is now he surely didn’t decline any last year

Well done!
It looks like a good deal for both sides. Some will cry about the $30 million in the first 2 years, but whatever. It’s just money. Bellinger gets a little certainty AND flexibility with the opt outs, while the Cubs don’t tie up capital or a position long term.

Disagree it makes sense for both sides….if Belly stinks and sinks back to his issue years at the plate, the Cubs are still on the hook for $$$ 80 million as he will never opt out…..spending $$ millions for sub par production isn’t a good deal for the team….only for Belly…

Yea, San Francisco is a rough place to live, even temporarily. It’s a political nightmare. It’s not the same place it was even a decade or two ago. Martinez is at a point in his career that he can be selective and teams need to meet his demands if it’s not his personal ideal situation

When you have plenty of money in the bank, you do not have to do anything. Just waiting and hoping for Boras to convince some other of 29 teams to give him a big contract for his last hurrah.
