Red Sox, Dalton Guthrie Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | February 7, 2024 at 12:08pm CDT

The Red Sox agreed to a minor league contract with infielder/outfielder Dalton Guthrie, per the transaction log at MiLB.com.

Guthrie has logged MLB time with the Phillies in each of the past two seasons, albeit in a quite limited role. The 28-year-old has tallied 28 plate appearances in each season while appearing in a combined total of 37 games. In that small sample, he’s batted .244/.393/.333 with a hefty 16.1% walk rate against a 25% strikeout rate.

Beyond a decent showing in limited MLB work, Guthrie touts a solid .289/.357/.434 slash in parts of three Triple-A seasons. He’s not a big power threat, with just 16 long balls in 856 plate appearances at that level, but he’s generally shown decent contact skills and provided a good bit of defensive versatility. Guthrie has played at least 582 innings at each of shortstop, second base, third base and center field, and he’s logged a combined 688 innings in the outfield corners (398 in right, 290 in left). The former Florida Gator was a sixth-round pick by the Phillies back in 2017.

Over the past year, Guthrie has begun to bounce around the league. The Phils selected his contract in September of 2022 but designated him for assignment last June when they needed to open a roster spot for Darick Hall’s return from the 60-day IL. Guthrie was traded to the Giants for cash, designated for assignment three weeks later, and then claimed off waivers by the Braves a week after that. He didn’t appear in a big league game with Atlanta, who designated him for assignment at the trade deadline and succeeded in passing him through waivers. Guthrie elected minor league free agency at season’s end.

Guthrie will add a right-handed bat to the Red Sox’ bench competition, and his experience playing just about anywhere on the diamond could serve him well as he tries to work his way back to the big leagues. Bench options currently on Boston’s 40-man roster include Enmanuel Valdez, Rob Refsnyder, Pablo Reyes, Bobby Dalbec and David Hamilton.

Hahaha, that’s so funny. I like dull, unoriginal jokes.

Do you guys know that the players The Red Sox waive also get picked up by other teams?

      It’s so odd.

Have always been a fan of these type guys. Hope Guthrie gets a chance at that 25/26th man spot.

Was going to point out how impressive / tough it is to have a .333 OBP with a ..344 AVG. Possible sure.

Yes, because you will have plenty of sacrifice flies to go along with that nice batting average, but not too much that the OBP will be closer to .300 to even .320, let alone .330

I’m not sure what the issue is with Netflix in any case. If anything, if I were the RS, I’d be more inclined to want to improve the team if there is going to be an expose on them.

The comments are predictable. This is simply a move to add a right handed bat with position versatility to the mix. 28 year old organizational depth with some MLB experience. Doesn’t count toward the 40 man roster and in case of injury on the big club presents a replacement level option without having to turn to a top prospect not yet ready for the big time. This is what teams do. Prepare the organizational roster for contingencies and once in a while you catch lightning in a bottle and the player finds traction in a new setting.

Do not introduce reason into a Red Sox-themed conversation, here, or in any other RS forum.

Your sole responsibility as a commentator is to bash John Henry, trash Chaim Bloom, attack Tom Werner, and demand they sack Alex Cora.

The beauty of all of this, is that commenting on these threads requires absolutely no originality of thought – that’s right – you, too, playing along at home, can become an expert pundit on the state of the Red Sox!

It may help if you threaten to never support the team again, and claim that their miserly ways have destroyed any interest that you may have ever had in the organization, and you can drive home that point by posting about your indifference 389 times, anywhere you can find an opportunity to do so.

      Here, let’s practice:

“The Red Sox announced the signing of a typical minor league filler named Joe Blow. He’ll receive a $700,000 salary, and report to Worcester”.

To which you would then reply:

      “Fire Alex Cora!”

“Highest ticket prices in the league! This signing is another insult!”

“I will never watch or listen to Red Sox baseball again!”

      “Full throttle!”

      “Dave O’Brien sucks!”

See how easy this is? I’d offer to have anyone contact me for more clever and contributory quips, but there’s plenty of free material available here for you. Read any random Red Sox article. All you need is one, and you can reuse it, word for word, from now until your keyboard breaks.

Just remember to announce, at the end, that you no longer care about the Red Sox.

Thank you, all, for your attention.

The RS FO problem is having guys talking to the press that should never, ever talk to the press. They say whatever pops into their mind, or whatever they think the fans want to hear. And then, only later, will they think about whether it makes sense.

The only guys that should be allowed to talk to the press are the manager and the GM.

That was the Golden Age, when we and the NYY chopped up the FAs between us. Once we allowed hedge fund operators into the league, it forced both of us to operate smarter. Unfortunately, only the NYY kept up with the spending.
