The Cardinals announced a two-year contract extension with manager Oli Marmol on Friday afternoon. The deal covers the 2025-26 seasons and ensured that Marmol, who had previously been slated to enter the final season of his current contract, will not operate as a lame duck.
Still just 37 years old, Marmol has managed to a 164-160 record since taking the reins following the team’s surprising dismissal of former skipper Mike Shildt. That includes a 93-69, division-winning performance in his debut managerial campaign, as well as a 71-91, last-place finish in 2023.
Marmol has spent his entire baseball career in the Cardinals organization. The Cards selected him with a sixth-round pick back in 2007, but Marmol’s minor league career lasted only four seasons before he moved into a coaching role within the system. He rose through the minor league ranks, coaching and managing at multiple stops, before being added to the Cardinals’ big league coaching staff as their first base coach for the 2017 campaign. Marmol held that job for two seasons before becoming Shildt’s bench coach for the next three years.
Marmol has, at times, drawn criticism for his handling of players. He and since-traded outfielder Tyler O’Neill clashed early last season when Marmol publicly called out O’Neill for not hustling home from third base. O’Neill took exception both to the substance of the comment as well as the public nature of the quip, suggesting that any conversation on the matter “could have been had in-house” and that the situation “should have been handled a little differently in my opinion.” Marmol also publicly stated early in the season that Willson Contreras would be removed from the starting catcher’s role — a decision that was reversed just a week later. O’Neill said in an appearance on Foul Territory earlier this year that he and Marmol grew to respect one another “at an arm’s length” and that his time with the club ended “on good terms” (video link).
Cardinals brass clearly doesn’t view last year’s disappointing results or the public spat with O’Neill as a reflection of Marmol’s ability (or lack thereof) to steer the team in the long term. He’ll now be locked up through the 2026 campaign, not only offering the team some stability but avoiding the lame-duck status that would have him routinely fielding questions and speculation about his job security throughout the upcoming season.
MLB.com’s John Denton was first to report that Marmol had signed an extension.

lol I just the article and had the same WTF reaction.
This is the best off-season move that could have been made…. for the Cubs.
Unclemike1526
It’s the same sound I’m going to make before I hurl if Wisdom makes the Cubs roster.
drasco036
Start practicing now because unless Wisdom gets hurt, he’s going to be in the opening day line at DH.
PaysonTim
As a Cubs fan, I wholeheartedly approve of this move. Cardinals fans on the other hand should be pissed.
drasco036
I feel like it’s a similar situation to Ross, although a lot of fans liked Ross, I wanted to throw my phone when they extended him.
jade 2
Wisdom is a 109 wRC+ hitter over the past 3 years. 78 HRs in 1,200 PAs – being paid 2.+ mil There are far worse bats being paid a lot more in the MLB.
Unclemike1526
I don’t have to practice. I do it every time I see him anywhere.
Dad
And he’s another former Cardinal who is playing better than anyone on the Cardinals roster
stymeedone
There are far better bats, too. Having someone barely above average as your DH is just sad.
drasco036
And yet Wisdoms 109 wRC+ is 24 points higher than what the Cubs got out of their DH last season and that is including the OPS that was over 1.000 from none other than Patrick Wisdom when he was the DH. Wisdom also put up a 147 wRC+ in the second half.
I don’t expect Wisdom to be a great hitter but the Cubs have done far worse. DH is a mindset and Wisdom actually has a good mindset for DH.
rondon
He’s a strikeout waiting to happen and a defensive liability.

219 Comments and not one of them are positive about the Marmol extension!

If or when the 2024 Cardinals season blows up as in 2023…… Do not blame the players!!!!
The Owners, The Front Office and the Manager are currently vying for the worst Franchise in Major League Baseball history.
They have the money and resources!!
The question is—— Why wouldn’t the strive to be the best of the best as they were— in their Golden Eras.
17dizzy
Nolan Gorman is the Cardinals Wisdom.
A strikeout just waiting to happen!!
Batting right in between Goldschmidt and Arenado. Gorman is currently a rally killer when he bats in the position Marmol has him currently slotted.

I have been a fan of the Cards since the 6th gm of the 1964 WS, the first game that I ever attended. I saw their great times, under Devine, Whitey, and Jocketty. I thought no era could be worse than the Maxvill era. I knew that Gussie wanted a winner.
However, our current ownership is a second generation sponge. DeWitt, Jr. is just like his dad. He doesn’t care about the fans, or the team, as long as his pockets are lined.
He ran Jocketty out, and installed his current puppet. In turn, they’ve run LaRussa and Schildt out of town, in favor of a manager whose nose is getting browner by the day.
They had an opportunity to build this pitching staff to a semblance of its former glory, without have to worry about the luxury tax threshold, but they couldn’t even do that.
Now, they keep Oli, and get aced out of Cease by the Padres.
SonnySteele
Well said, Francis.

Poor bullpen management and lineup construction. Not to mention the drama between him and Tyler O’Neill over his perceived “not hustling”
I’m at a loss for words right now…
He must have some unsavory pics of Mozeliak he’s got hidden away.
Jabronie23
His bullpen management and lineup construction are fine. Better than Schildt

I beg to differ. Schildt was far and away a better manager. The results speak for themselves.
Jabronie23

BradBaar

stymeedone
I think you underestimate the effect a good manager can have on team attitude and player performance.
TheRabbitBaron
They both sucked. Schildt only looks better because he’s sandwiched between Matheny and Marmol. Wouldn’t it be crazy if the Catdinals hired a manager with MANAGERIAL EXPERIENCE…. I mean the last time they did that it turned out pretty decent.
Chris Sabo's Glasses
I’m as perplexed by you by the extension and hate he is still the manager. However a broken clock is right twice a day. I was at the game when O’Neill jogged around third about as slow as Molina would and was wondering what the deal was as he was easily thrown out at home. He definitely was not putting any effort into scoring that game.
stymeedone
Oli was right to question O’Neill’s hustle. He was absolutely WRONG to do it thru the media, publicly.
Jackalopal
This feels like a developing situation similar to Preller and his weird controlling ways
Gwynning
So weird that a General Manager and President of Baseball Operations would want to control his team…
Rishi
The best head of an organization knows to delegate authority. Why hire someone if you don’t trust them? If it’s because of ownership then shouldn’t you understand how not delegating authority to those who are hired is detrimental, considering that means it’s happening to you? If you want to control their decisions then tell them exactly what you want when they are hired. If they accept the job and don’t like it then it’s their fault at that point.
stymeedone
Micro managing produces micro results.

A contract extension is basically meaningless. If management wants to make a change one extra year on a deal isn’t going to keep them from moving another direction.
longdistancebrewer
Yep. Wonder if this is mainly intended to take the heat away from the ‘Yadi’s here and ready to take over’ bandwagon that’ll start as soon as the team hits a rough patch?
Still a pretty shocking headline for most Cards fans to see though!
BaseballGuy1
Molina would be a terrible replacement for Marmol. Get a real experienced MLB manager from outside the inbred STL culture.
BradBaar
Quote of the Day!
The Cards are an incestuous organ -ization.
Rishi
I don’t like giving first time managers a chance. Using guys from your organization too easily is often bad too. That said you do know them better and they know the organization. It is always nice to have a manager who understands pitching. If they were gonna hand over the reins to a first time guy it’s not a bad time to do so. They are somewhat in between. I don’t think anyone is expecting a WS certainly.
lesterdnightfly
Molina would never hand over the lineup card. Too much Stickem on it….
SupremeZeus
Probably real merit to that sentiment. Also probably want to reward a ”Redbird lifer.” However if they are rewarding you after a 91 loss season, you better have somebody else starting your car with Yadi lurking somewhere in the background. Yadi is near the top of the Redbird lifer totem pole. As always, I’m here for the crash and burn if MoeTie ever does install Yadi as the top man.
its_happening
Except he received one for doing nothing. Lame duck status is what he earned.
Salzilla
Shockingly bad.
Cardsfan21
Jesus. If Yadi coaches another team in the league as a result I’ll never watch a baseball game again.
Karensjer
Molina always annoyed me and came off as showboaty. Glad he’s not coaching or managing to be honest.
machumizer
He was really quiet, he would stare down runners after they stupidly tried to steal on him and would back his team up in some stupid brawls but generally he was cold blooded and didnt draw attention to himself until maybe the end of his career where he finally looked to be having fun reaching milestones. Yadi might be annoying but any team he manages is going to be extremely well prepared every single day and the pitching staff would be in the hands of one of the best game callers in the history of the catching position, so its good he’s not managing but if he was your teams manager you would have a great respect for how seriously he takes playing good baseball and winning
Karensjer
You didn’t watch him against the Dutch in the WBC.
My team won’t be able to do anything with or without Molina at the helm because Rays ownership won’t spend money.
revolver
OMG I might puke
BaseballGuy1
You mean if Molina ever manages any team in all of MLB, including STL in particular, you will never watch another baseball game. As bad as Marmol is, Molina would not be an improvement.
ih8tepaperstraws
Been a life long Cardinal fan. I don’t think Molina will ever be the manager. But we will get 20+ years of cardinals asking for it just like Oquendo. Molina could be terrible like Ventura was for the White Sox. Would hate to root for the firing of Molina and change my opinion of him.
SonnySteele
Like Mets fans and Wally Backman.
17dizzy
I still believe Oquendo would make a good Cardinals manager. The reason he won’t be hired is he’s from the highly successful Cardinal’s Way.
Now-a-days ……. It’s the dreaded Mozeliak Way or the highway.
The Cardinals are currently the most unstable team in the major leagues from their Ownership down to the bat boy.

Card66
Who does he have the goods on? Guess I need to find a new team to support.
Jabronie23
Im fine with it. Everyone who hates Oli is too stupid to actually articulate why they don’t like him
BaseballGuy1
You are mistaken. The majority of STL fans have no love for Marmol. Plenty can and have stated the myriad of reasons why Marmol has been and will continue to be a poor MLB manager.
Poolhalljunkies
As a non card fan watching this..i think you might be the only one who likes him..maybe share with everyone why you are fine with the extention? what has he done specifically that you think was good?..im genuinely curious..my non troll.disclaimer
Jabronie23
I am of the belief that over the last decade or so, managers have become largely indistinguishable from one another. Most of the important decision making, like bullpen management, lineups, etc are more or less determined by analytics and dictated from the top. A manager’s job now is just relegated to the leader role. Now, there were a couple of instances of questionable leadership from Marmol last year, but I think that’s true of most managers. By all indications, his players seem to like and respect him
saluelthpops
You should read the comments above and below. Articulation abounds. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps you could articulate why you are “fine with it.”
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s future guaranteed money. Having a manager like Marmol in lame duck status prevents him from resting on his laurels and try to do something different to win and secure future employment beyond the year. I wouldn’t think an extension exactly lights a fire underneath him with an urgency to change the status quo.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Chad Dare
gojira15
“Resting on his laurels…”
Not much to rest on.
Jabronie23
90% of the complaints have to do with poor performance last year. I’ve always been of the belief that managers have a pretty minuscule effect on winning, especially in the modern day when bullpen management, lineups, etc are determined by data. The O’Neill fiasco wasn’t handled perfectly by Oli, but apparently they did try to handle it internally and it didn’t work
lesterdnightfly
You are damning Cards fans for their stupidity…. and proclaiming yourself to be one of them.
“Interesting, Captain.”
NoPlanB
And just when the season was starting to look promising…bad juju.
CravenMoorehead
I do give Oli credit for speaking the truth about CB Bucknor AKA the black Angel Hernandez
Karensjer
I’ve watched or attended so many games that have had bad calls and just about 90% of the time, I’ll look to see who the umpire is who made the bad call, and it is Bucknor. He is almost worse than Yankee fans.
CravenMoorehead
Remember when Bucknor forgot to reset the pitch clock in a game between Tampa/Cleveland then called an automatic ball against the pitcher? He then ejected Kevin Cash when Bucknor could have met with the other umpires to fix the call…but that would have involved Bucknor admitting he was wrong. Dude is trash and deserves as much hate as Angel Hernandez gets.
Goin' to Sheetz
That’s surprising. Every Cardinals fan I know in real life and on here is counting down the days until he’s fired.

spudchukar
I get that Oli was in a bad spot, with Molina looking over his shoulder. And the Red Birds did him no favors at the trade deadline. The question is can he earn the respect of the players without alienating them. Time will tell. He has been given plenty of tools. There was talk about less use of subs and a more set line-up, the current situation doesn’t really support that idea. Maybe there will be an effort to start a more consistent batting order, but with Arenado, Goldy, and Contreras needing at least one day off a week, that is going to difficult. Plus, there is a logjam at 2nd and DH. Good luck Oli, I think you are going to need it!
BaseballGuy1
Molina would not be an improvement over Marmol. Neither were or are qualified to be MLB managers. Going to be eating most of that contract when Marmol is terminated in 2024 and Mozeliak is replaced before the 2025 season begins.
FrontOfficeStan
This is such a weird take, Molina was already viewed as a manager of the club. The most common argument against him is how he would handle the press.
I do think that this was a sort of sweetheart deal Mo made to secure Oli money for when he’s gone as well.

its_happening
Deserved to be fired either game 2 or 3 last year in their opening series against the Blue Jays. Did not realize bad managing gets rewarded.
DonOsbourne
Not at all surprised. Mo plans to ride out his contract. This extension guarantees his hand picked puppet has a contract that will keep him in place as well. The timing is perfect. He gets the extension before the losing starts. No way DeWitt will attempt to force Mo to make a change at any point during the season now. Come on 2026!
acoss13
Don,
Serious question, would you prefer Mike Matheny as a manager right now?
DonOsbourne
Eh, probably. Matheny was a paint by numbers manager who also had trouble getting along with certain players. But he did at least command more respect because of his success and reputation as a hard nosed player.
The team’s play improved markedly after Shildt took over, so it’s obvious Matheny had short comings. But overall, yes, I would probably take Matheny over Marmol.
acoss13
Shildt was the guy to keep, but Mo wanted a Yes-man and he most certainly got it. Matheny got respect because he played under LaRussa I believe, and he did take the Cardinals to a pennant in 2013 at least.
RandorBierd
Matheny was one of the worst managers I’d ever seen. Then I saw Marmol.
I.M. Insane
“Oli” may not be the worst manager, but he’s in the bottom three.

DarkSide830
2 year extention is 3 years too many.

Manfred’s playing with the balls
Managers are the most overrated position in baseball. Everyone here knows GM’s make all the lineup calls and managers are there just to convince players to “buy in”. They choose ex players who do what they’re told by management and are respected by players.

Managers are glorified cheerleaders

Cardinals fans now understand how important catchers are to a team. Hitters and pitchers are natural enemies and they are the bridge between the two. If they can hit a bit it’s a bonus.
CardsFan57
Why? At least see how this year goes after the team grossly underperformed last season.
paulk-2
I’m assuming Mozeliak’s goal is to leave this team so bad that they will have all kinds of money to spend when he leaves. Goldy isn’t going to re-sign into this dumpster fire of a team and Arenado is going to demand a trade. Might as well trade Contreras as well. The bad times are here Cardinal Nation.
Slider_withcheese
You make it sound as if not extending Goldschmidt, clearing Contreras’s contract (too much for a future DH) and getting something for Nolan Arenado while they can is a bad thing.
FrontOfficeStan
I’m not sure I agree with trading Arenado but avoiding a Goldschmidt extension and clearing that awful Contreras contract would certainly be an achievement. Our farm is dog water so maybe you’re onto something with trading Arenado. I’m not so sure we’re THAT out of it right now, but sadly I’m losing my optimism with each day.
CardsFan57
This rebuild should have started in July of last year. They could have gotten some top pitching prospects for Goldy and Arenado last year. They won’t get as much this year. On the plus side Goldy will likely approve any trade this year to avoid a qualifying offer next year.

Over 150 comments so far (and counting) and not a single one is positive.

This organization is truly tanking!!!! I have never been more disgusted!!! We peaked from 2000-2015 now we are pathetic

I have a thought that just came to my mind for the other Cardinals fans. Do you realize that we are the only MLB organization that REWARDS MEDIOCRITY? This is our new reputation.

What’s the definition of insanity, Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?
Another fine mess you’ve gotten us into Oli.

I hope we are all proven wrong and have to apologize!

Love it! Hope he doesn’t change a thing. Keep St Louis where it belongs – in last place

Al from White Plains is going to lose over this.
Thought the Cardinals manager was the top manager to start the season on the hot seat.

Are you kidding me? Tell me you’re kidding me.

I get the feeling that the Cardinals don’t want to work. But I don’t know why?

The Marmol extension is great news for any Cardinals player who underperforms, which is about half of the roster, because those players have a scapegoat.

Relax! Oli isn’t the reason the Cards were good in 2023 and bad in 2024. Having said that there is no reason the Cards cannot bump up next to the cap. I never thought of this before, but is there some sort of contest between owners as to who can put the best team out there for the least amount of money. If so that is such a disgrace. So you win financial games over real games. Is that where we are in society?

No question Goldy retires a Cardinal now to get a ring.
Arenado thankful he did not use an opt out.
Which young player cuts a friendly deal first?
DonOsbourne
Well Marmol is young and I bet his contract is VERY team friendly so………

He is just a yes man who won’t give Mo grief. Thats all he is.

This is such a joke !!!!

Wow. Terrible news for Cardinal fans. Marmol lost his clubhouse last season. Yadi was and is the guy who should be the manager.
paulk-2
Won’t happen as long as Mozeliak is GM. It’ll be another Schildt situation where Yadi is telling Mozeliak to stay in his lane and Mo fires Yadi for not managing the way Mo wants it done.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
The news here should read Marmol fired not extended.

Trash franchise making another terrible decision. Apparently the most recent database they have hacked says this guy is a good manager. Maybe hack someone else next time cheating cesspool franchise

How much is guaranteed and what’s the buy out? without that information, seems like it’s too early to get bent out of shape. if the buy out is low, it just increases the pressure on Oli to bring better results. (can’t just claim lame duck lack of support/confidence from ownership).
I know less about mgr contracts, serious questions, can anyone shed some light on that for me?
at first blush, I get why Cards fans are not happy. i’d be interested to see if there’s wiggle room to “undo” this extension and cut him loose if they repeat last year’s results.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
If be has a repeat year of 2023 this year or next. He won’t make it to the 2026 season.

Just looking at Oli Marmol’s picture shows the weasel he is.
I don’t care what anyone says—- especially John Mozeliak—- there is no Justification for Marmol’s 2-yr extension whatsoever!!!
Mozeliak has torn down the Cardinals and Marmol is just Mozeliak’s puppet hand.
Puppet hand so all future damages through 2026 can be blamed on Marmol—— Not John Mozeliak.
