March 12: Cabrera has been diagnosed with an impingement in his right shoulder and is day-to-day for the time being, Schumaker revealed to the Marlins beat this morning (X link via Issac Azout of Fish On First). Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald adds that he’ll be evaluated further today, and the team will determine his next steps thereafter.
March 11: Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera will undergo an MRI on his right shoulder, manager Skip Schumaker tells Christina De Nicola of MLB.com. The righty’s strength tests evidently came back fine but there’s still enough concern that the club would like some more information.
It was reported that Cabrera didn’t make his scheduled start yesterday due to some tightness in his throwing shoulder. Though his scratch was presented as precautionary and Cabrera said he was “already starting to feel better” a few hours later, the concern from the club is enough that some imaging is now planned.
Cabrera has shown a strong ability to get strikeouts and ground balls thus far in his career, though with some concerns about his lack of control. He has thrown 197 2/3 innings over the past three years with a 4.01 earned run average. He has punched out 26.2% of hitters in that time while keeping 49.4% of balls in play on the ground, but he’s also given out free passes to 14% of opponents that he has faced.
Now out of options, Cabrera seemed a lock for a rotation spot in Miami to open the year, especially with some injury questions in the starting group. Sandy Alcántara underwent Tommy John surgery late last year and won’t be an option for the club in 2024. Lefty Braxton Garrett is dealing with some shoulder soreness here in spring and is questionable for Opening Day.
Garrett’s injury seemed to open the door for A.J. Puk to break camp in the rotation, as he looks to move from the bullpen to a starting role. Puk would slot in next to Jesús Luzardo, Eury Pérez and Cabrera, with one spot available for someone like Trevor Rogers or Ryan Weathers. If Cabrera’s shoulder tightness requires him to miss some time, perhaps both of Rogers and Weathers need to open the season in the rotation.
Rogers and Weathers have each been posting good results here in spring but it would be less than ideal for the Marlins to be relying on them early on. Rogers only tossed 18 innings last year due to biceps and lat injuries. Weathers, meanwhile, struggled badly last year and finished with a 6.55 ERA. It would also put them in a spot where their top depth options could be Max Meyer or Bryan Hoeing. Meyer is a talented prospect but missed all of 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery. Hoeing has just 83 1/3 innings of major league experience with a 6.48 ERA. Pitchers like Roddery Muñoz and Darren McCaughan are also on the 40-man roster but Muñoz hasn’t yet made his MLB debut and McCaughan has just 14 big league innings.
That would put the Fish far away from past years, when they had so much depth that there were persistent rumors about them using it to bolster other parts of the roster. They did make one such trade when they flipped Pablo López and a couple of prospects for Luis Arráez, but that trade and the Alcántara surgery have thinned out the group in a hurry.
The club will obviously be hoping for good news in the coming weeks on both Garrett and Cabrera. Free agency still has some arms available but the Marlins have been keeping the purse strings tight this offseason. Their $5MM deal for Tim Anderson is the only major league deal they’ve given out to a free agent. That makes it hard to imagine them signing someone like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery, or even Michael Lorenzen. Pitchers like Jake Odorizzi or Noah Syndergaard could perhaps be signed for a modest amounts, though the Marlins may not feel that necessary if Cabrera and/or Garrett end up feeling better in the coming days.

The MRI line starts in the back behind all of the other promising starters. The MLB is helpless to figure out what is necessary to prevent all of the throwing injuries. This should be high on the list. Instead they are concerned about the pitch clock. Go figure.
TheMan 3
The pitching clock excuse is a sorry one at best
Pitchers have been injuring their arms for at least 50 years. I don’t recall the pitching clock being an issue in 1974.

That was the year the first Tommy John surgery was performed. Your trivia question. Name the pitcher it was performed on?

No way this happens if Kim Ng was still there.

Lol good one
BannedMarlinsFanBase
@Big Smoke
You know, after the vast disappointment Avi Garcia has been in Miami, the one thing we can take from him being on our team, he works into almost any argument against any person trying to bash the Marlins for Kim Ng no longer being around.
Let’s see:
As this poster and many others have done, any statement that insinuates that the Marlins wouldn’t have done any acquisition that involves a d-bag misogynist if Kim Ng was still around. Response: Avi Garcia
Marlins didn’t give Kim Ng money to spend on players. Response: Avi Garcia
Marlins wouldn’t be bringing in poor character guys if Kim Ng was still around. Response: Avi Garcia (oh yeah, and Anthony Bass)
Kim Ng was a flawless GM for the Marlins. Response: Avi Garcia (and Anthony Bass, Adam Cimber, Jacob Stallings, Joey Wendle, sending Jesus Sanchez to CF, sending Bryan De La Cruz to AAA, releasing Harold Ramirez while keeping Lewis Brinson and Monte Harrison, releasing Jesus Aguilar for nothing weeks after she passed on trade opportunities for him, and many other gaffes).
Did I miss any other mess ups under Kim Ng? Either way, if Kim Ng was still around. Response: Avi Garcia

Too many chuckers in the MLB. Another big thanks to the Analytics nerds that took their spreadsheet to be some bible for baseball.
Thou shall not pitch the ball.. Thou shall chuck the ball as hard as you can.
PiratesPundit51
Amen. Don’t learn how to actually pitch, just rely on your velocity…and for heaven’s sake, add stress to your shoulder, wrist and elbow by learning breaking balls at age 9 and throwing them as often as possible. Analytics are only partly to blame, winning-obsessed youth coaches and parents share some culpability here.

Yeah, it’s actually pretty sad to see grown men living vicariously through their son/daughter when it comes to baseball. I get it, you wanted to have the bells and whistles that they have today, but relax, it’s their time to live their dream not your dream.
User 1404051815
But this is the case in every sport now. Parents living through their kids and it starts at the earliest ages. Funny thing is, as soon as the season begins parents are wheeling and dealing about where to play their kid next year
I’ve coached/managed for 35 years. It’s never been this bad
And you’re right. Few coaches are teaching proper mechanics anymore, and it doesn’t matter the sport.

Had Sixto showed up in shape, he would have gotten a starting job.

Sixto is 3 years basically removed from pitching professionally. The weight stinks, but the fact he has stayed on the roster is telling on how and where they still view him.

Bauer just does not get it.
For the last batter in his game two days ago for the Asian Breeze against Dodgers minor leaguers he had fans call out what pitch he should through and announced it.

This team has a surplus of arms already. With arguably the best pitching coach in the game as is. You don’t need to disrupt that with him even though you could get away with the bad pr from the fan support and I’m a firm believer Bauers gone through due process and should sue the mlb at this point because of the collusion. I don’t see Miami being overly competitive either, but a doors a door. Just not the right fit. Cabrera needs to be shut down immediately. He’s over throwing his stuff and needs to get control of his capability before he can maximize on that potential.
TheMan 3
Owners are permitted to sign or not sign any player they see fit, claiming that they are colliding to deny Bauer a contract is absurd
The guy has a history that women fans might object to and despite your argument, women make up a fair portion of the fan base in baseball
Teams want to win but they also want packed stadiums.
HEHEHATE
That doesn’t seem to be the narrative in Pittsburgh or Miami.
TheMan 3
Bauer approached Cherington to offer his services for the league minimum and was refused
Cherington said that signing Bauer would be bad for the team
HEHEHATE
Yes he did and Pittsburgh is absolutely going to regret it.
Dice 66
Thank God Pirates didn’t trade for him! They didn’t want Nick Gonzalez!? Myself I think 2nd base should go to him. Good power, spark plug type player. He needs AB’s!!
HEHEHATE
He’s still got 6 years control and the knocks on him have always been the shoulder itself which he’s dealt w surprisingly well considering the stuff he throws, where he ultimately ends up considering he’s constantly boarding the 5 innings and the control. He’s not perfect, but he’s been a really nice projectable piece to clubs with some natural awesome stuff in his repertoire.
As a Pirates fan I would have went for him, but personally pirates pitching woes are on the mlb roster. Cherrington rushed the Market to lock innings on marco and Martin. One maybe, but two is pushing it. They are playing for now, but I’m not a big fan of a lot of his moves this off-season and it just looks like in a wide open central he’s playing for pieces he can flip. The pirates need to do a lot to their system, but it is coming to fruition. I just think Cherrington made the right call vs the ask. Did he have the pieces to play sure, but you’re taking 4/6 lottery tickets on that control today for a 60-40 tj. It’s tough for both clubs.
I don’t think Miami is complete bare with pitching. Sure they are Down 3 starters today in alcantara Braxton and now Cabrera, but you can still make things work out. You’ve got luzardo, Perez, rodgers, puk, and I believe 5 is a lock for weathers at this point. You can still play serviceable ball with that, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see lorenzen sneak into here on a 2-14/16 right now just for the saftey net. The guys got limited mileage on that arm at the mlb level for his age and he could be the innings eater you need until the rest of these guys have it figured out.
User 1404051815
HEHE, I agree with some of your thoughts here but I’ll stick by what I was saying when we learned Oviedo was gone for ‘24. With so many guys coming up by mid season—-between the surgically repaired to the young guns on the cusp—there was no way Cherington was going to spend or send away prospects he was undecided about. It just made no sense. Instead, he brought in a couple low risk, low cost guys and decided to hope for the best for the other two spots in the rotation
Think for a moment of how things have fallen right for this thinking so far:
-no one in the NL Central has done anything to separate themselves. In fact, the Brewers look weaker. Treading water for a couple months might not be that bad a thing
-Ortiz has looked relatively good
-While Priester has looked like a guy more ready for AA than the big show, Jones has looked sharp and is pushing the envelope
I agree with your basic premise here. Their scouting department has been subpar for years, surpassed only by an even weaker player development program.
And yet, having watched a number of games on TV this spring, you have to be heartened by guys like Davis, Cruz, Reynolds and Hayes.
You’re right. They’ll either sink or swim early on with this starting rotation. And I’m in complete agreement—they’ve rarely done enough in the recent past to shore things up with obvious moves
But Cherington should play the powerball. Between the aforementioned items and passing on this guy, he’s riding with a horseshoe these days
TheMan 3
yes Pittsburgh will regret signing a clubhouse cancer because you said so
Bauer hasn’t pitched in over a year, and he’s a year older. There’s no guarantee he would be the same player as he was before he decided to be a problem
PiratesPundit51
I’d absolutely say they won’t regret it. Cherington pretty much made clear that lack of interest in Bauer had as more to do with his off-field stuff than his talent. The Pirates’ SP depth isn’t as bad as everyone seems to think and will improve drastically come June (when Brubaker is back and Skenes is past Super 2 and service time stuff).
PiratesPundit51
But he mowed down a bunch of low-A and AA types in Japan last season! That surely would translate into a Cy Young award this season! (Kidding, of course.)
Besides, we’d have to get Kyle Crick back just to have someone to punch him in the face when he gets out of line.
User 1404051815
Yeah, but they signed Chapman and Grandal, two guys who were never known to be Mr. Congeniality candidates. I highly doubt the troubles Bauer had played much of a role here. Same with Urias and German. Maybe it’s true these kinds of guys *are* blackballed by MLB ownership—we’ll never know—but to me at least, it simply comes down to their belief that they can tread water and wait until they have a plethora of starting pitching come mid summer
Why pay? Why risk upsetting team chemistry? Why sign one of these guys and create a backlog of your own doing?
It’s going to be an interesting first couple months

User 1404051815
For too many years since it opened, ownership used *this* as the main drawing point to see a ball game. And pierogi races. And fireworks nights. Even a couple concerts.
It is a beautiful ballpark, a real contrast to the cookie cutter variety stadiums like Three Rivers, Riverfont and Veterans Stadium were
But the most memorable baseball times happened a decade or more ago. I’d hope the franchise is moving towards a return to those times
TheMan 3
Priester looked really good yesterday for 3 innings then completely unraveled giving up 5 runs in the 4th inning including a grand slam so the jury is still out on him as a competent starter
And yet I am in the consensus that Cherington didn’t do enough this offseason to improve the team but I also think his hands were tied due to finances. He said he would increase payroll but never indicated to what level
Right now I think their payroll hovers around $80 million, which is $6 million more than last year
User 1404051815
He looked like the same old Priester in the 4th. Threw a pitch dead red to Clemens’s kid for a grand slam. And yet, you just know the geniuses in charge will somehow have him as a starter option while Jones is sent down
MacGromit
Amazing how fast Miami went from a surplus of arms to a dearth. With the rash of injuries either shelving pitchers for the season or at least for a bit, seems no amount of depth is enough. I didn’t think that the Marlins would need to consider *acquiring* arms other than the standard swapping of bullpen assets that are so mercurial.
Given the unproven nature of their young arms that they previously were going to slowly bring into the bigs — I can’t see Miami trading Jesus Luzardo to the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, etc. Shame, as an Orioles fan, I’ve really wanted to see Luxardo in Orange.
Big whiffa
What makes me double take is the amount of injuries league wide and then you look at how thin some of these big payroll franchises are like stl, yanks, dodgers, ect. Many franchises expecting to compete can’t handle a loss 1/2 this bad due to organizational depth
sandman12
George Soriano has looked great. I’d have no problem with him in the early season rotation.

wonder if these worries were part of the talks of the pirates trade “slowed down”
Probably still worth a trade but the return would be MUCH lower and really, if you are going for a young guy with control.. we got a bunch of those that could probably fill that role with similar results.
Future Pirates rotation looks to be Keller, Skenes, Jones, Chandler, Solomato, Burrows and hopefully Priester. Couple more in the pipeline that could be decent as well. reasonable to say not all of them will make the rotation.
Still should just pick up Bauer either on a ‘cheap’ one/two year deal.. maybe even a long term deal if conditions could be worked out to give a team a bail out should his life beyond what we currently know goes haywire.
User 1404051815
I just don’t see Priester, Joe. I’d hope Keller is in that mix before him

priester through the first few innings the other day he was on it… then fell apart in the second time through the order. But IIRC, some of that was bad luck. But you know.. still spring.
Depending on what happens with the rest of the rotation I could see them trying him in the pen for a 6/7 inning guy at some point.. but he probably should be in AAA going into the season.
