Orioles Reinstate Kyle Bradish, Designate Yohan Ramírez

By Darragh McDonald | May 2, 2024 at 9:35am CDT

The Orioles announced today that right-hander Kyle Bradish has been reinstated from the injured list and will start today’s game. To open a roster spot for him, righty Yohan Ramírez has been designated for assignment.

Bradish has been on the injured list all season and will be making his season debut today. While missing more than a month to start the year is less than ideal, it’s essentially a best-case scenario when considering where things stood a few months back. Bradish was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in the middle of February, which naturally led to worries about Tommy John surgery and an absence of more than a year.

But the righty receive a platelet-rich plasma injection and began a throwing program shortly thereafter.  A few weeks later, general manager Mike Elias said that subsequent MRIs had shown “accelerated healing” of the ligament. Bradish began a rehab assignment a couple of weeks ago and made three starts, tossing 3 innings, then 3 1/3, then 5 frames.

Considering the scary diagnosis from the winter, seeing Bradish return to a big league mound just a few months later is just about the best outcome that could have been imagined. He had a huge breakout for the O’s last year, making 30 starts and finishing the year with a 2.83 earned run average. He struck out 25% of batters faced, walking opponents at a 6.6% rate while keeping 49.2% of balls in play on the ground. He finished fourth in American League Cy Young voting.

Getting that kind of production back in the rotation will be key for the Orioles, as their starting staff has been in constant flux this year. Both Bradish and John Means started the season on the injured list. Tyler Wells and Grayson Rodriguez have gone on the IL in recent weeks, though Means and Bradish have now both been activated. That leaves the club with a rotation of Bradish, Means, Corbin Burnes, Cole Irvin and Dean Kremer, with Albert Suárez likely bumped into a long relief role.

Despite the various injuries, the club has weathered the storm well. They are currently 19-11, one of the best records in baseball so far this year. Their starting staff has a collective ERA of 3.58 at the moment, which places them 10th in the majors.

The activation of Bradish will cost Ramírez his roster spot. It’s now possible that he will celebrate his birthday in DFA limbo, as he turns 29 on Monday. The righty has bounced around the league quite a bit in his career, having gone from the Mariners to the Guardians, Pirates, White Sox, Mets and Orioles over the past few years.

His stints with those last three clubs have each been fairly brief. The White Sox claimed him off waivers from the Pirates in September of last year. He was designated for assignment in December and traded to the Mets for cash. He lasted with the Mets through the winter but was designated for assignment just over a week into the season, going to the O’s in another cash deal.

Between the Mets and the Orioles, he has thrown 11 1/3 innings this year with an 8.74 ERA, though a lot of that ERA is due to a five-run outing for the Mets just before they cut him loose. He has struck out 22.2% of batters faced this year while walking 11.1%. He is out of options, so the only way for the O’s to clear him from the active roster was to remove him from the 40-man entirely.

They will now have a week to trade him or pass him through waivers. He now has a career ERA of 4.39 in 135 1/3 innings, going back to his 2020 debut. His 23.1% strikeout rate and 44.2% ground ball rate are both around league average, though his 12.4% walk rate is on the high side.

Bradish is carrying a 3.54 ERA against the Yankees. Not sure why anybody would think he’d either get lit up by Yankee hitters or dominate over them. The numbers don’t sell either narrative.

You mentioned Torres and Verdugo. They have 28 combined plate appearances against Bradish. Admittedly, they’ve been good, but 28 plate appearances doesn’t really tell anyone anything.

      Verdugo is 7 for 19 with 3 2B, 3 RBI and 1 K.

How dare Rodon even take the mound in May! He should have stopped throwing at 50 pitches, how dumb of him to throw 80! In May! Against a divisional opponent! Meaningless game! Doesn’t he know he deserves the loss because games don’t matter this early? Just like Grayson deserved to get hurt for throwing 101 pitches against a division opponent in April, right York? Troll. Rodon should have just set up a tee and put the ball there, save himself the effort for when it counts! After all, they came into the series in first and are leaving Balmer in second place, so it’s a good thing he didn’t exert himself just to lose. He musta given up eight hits and hit two batters on purpose just so he didn’t end up like Rodriguez. I bet he read York’s comments about how funny it is that Grayson went on the IL after pitching hard in game 1. Foolish.

Could be, but the speculation is in the OP. I’m just pointing out that even with great pitching, it didn’t work for MIL.

Me claiming Bradish is getting lit up today is making a claim about today’s expected results not him pitching in a short series like the playoffs.

@Old York. Speculation is a much better word than assumption. Even you are speculating when you say Bradish is expected to lose. Just like you may speculate that the Brewers have a good 1-2 punch in the playoffs.

There’s always an element of good fortune in the playoffs.

On the other hand, Milwaukee had a bottom 10 offense last season, so their pitching may have been great, but it had to be to get a win.

Baltimore has the best offense in the AL so far this year. If they end up with great or even really good pitching, they’ll be a tough out.

To be fair, HOU is tied with BAL for the best offense in the AL at 116 wRC+. NYY are at 114.

I was looking at OPS+, Balt with 118, Houston with 115.

Either way, the point stands. They have a prolific offense, Milwaukee did not. They (MIL) remind me of my Jays. Good pitching/defense, limited offense. That kind of roster construction requires more good fortune to be successful since there are going to be a lot of low scoring games.

You team is at or near the top in payroll every single year. Have unlimited funds basically to spend on players. Last 20 years, the Yankees should be embarrassed. 2 WS appearances. 1 win.

With the advantage they have financially over most of MLB, they both should have A LOT more success.

There will be no embarrassment. That’s part of being a Yankees’ fan.
It could be worse. Dallas Cowboys fans (no conference finals since 1996) and Toronto Maple Leafs fans (no Cup since 1967) are the same way and should be embarrassed.
The Yankees also didn’t need to deal with a 47-115 during the past 20 years and being hopelessly out of the race by Memorial Day. They were minimally a winning team if not winning the division or in/contending for playoffs year in and year out.

Good news on the starting rotation. But the Os better address late inning relief/closer. The window is open now, go and trade for a closer if one becomes available. Kimbrel can’t be trusted

      @ gr81t2:

No question playoff teams need reliable bullpens. All the aces and good hitters in the world don’t matter if your bullpen gives it away.

If the Jays fall out of it, Yimi Garcia would probably be available. There’s always a few guys like that floating around come the deadline.

The nice part about Bradish and Means returning is it allows Suarez and (possibly) Irvin take roles in the bullpen and pushing out lesser relievers. If Wells can return to health he can really add to the bullpen as we know he can close games from a couple years ago. Install him as the setup man for Kimbrel and the bullpen looks massively better than it did a few weeks ago.

Why would they DFA a player with a 3.49 ERA (3.63 FIP) as a starter this year who is coming off of 2 scoreless starts?

He was also much better in the bullpen last year than as a starter so he could easily go to the bullpen if he gets forced out of the rotation.

2 last starts have been solid.
he seems to have at least temporarily turned a corner and is the solid but not superstar rotation piece. plus he has lots of cost controlled years left. much easier to DFA a lottery ticket and waiver claim reliever.

They’re waiting to see if he has actually developed – his last two starts were good – or if he’ll turn into a pumpkin again.
Once he went to the bullpen in 2023 he was ok.
