Report: MLB Teams Planning For Roki Sasaki Posting This Offseason

By Nick Deeds | May 26, 2024 at 12:33pm CDT

Japanese pitching phenom Roki Sasaki had plenty of eyes on him this past offseason when it was reported that he had asked to be posted for major league clubs ahead of his age-22 campaign, and while he ultimately remained with Nippon Professional Baseball’s Chiba Lotte Marines for the 2024 campaign, that’s done little to quell speculation about his future in stateside baseball. That speculation may not be entirely unfounded, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reported this morning that MLB clubs are “planning” for the possibility that Sasaki is posted during the 2024-25 offseason. Neither Sasaki nor the Marines have confirmed the youngster’s plans for the future.

Sasaki is generally viewed as the biggest rising star in Japanese baseball today. MLBTR contributor Dai Takegami Podziewski discussed Sasaki back in September amid his return from an oblique issue that had sidelined him for most of the second half, noting his triple-digit velocity was present even in his abbreviated three-inning return to the league’s highest level. That outing contributed to a dominant overall line in NPB play last year, as Sasaki pitched to a 1.78 ERA while striking out a whopping 39.1% of batters faced in 91 innings of work.

As noted by both Podziewski and Janes, durability appears to be the only box left for Sasaki to check in the Pacific League, where he sports a career ERA of 2.03 across 337 1/3 innings of work. Sasaki’s career-high innings total as a professional to this point in his career stands at just 129 1/3, well below the 150-170 inning range that’s standard for front-of-the-rotation arms in Japan. For example, Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw 171 innings between all levels of NPB play during his final season in Japan last year, while Cubs lefty Shota Imanaga completed 159 frames. Sasaki is currently on pace to reach that threshold this season, with a 2.18 ERA in 53 1/3 innings of work across eight starts while Janes notes that the righty threw 119 pitches in a start last week without issue.

While Sasaki and the Marines have been fairly tight-lipped about the right-hander’s future plans, Janes notes that people around Sasaki, including teammate and former big leaguer Gregory Polanco, have made it clear the right-hander is excited to make the jump to the majors. Whether that move will come following the 2024 campaign remains to be seen, although it’s worth noting that Janes suggests that some teams are keeping a portion of their international bonus pool available in case Sasaki is posted.

As a player under the age of 25, Sasaki would not be eligible for the typical posting process that Yamamoto and Imanaga both participated in this past offseason, where there are no limitations placed on the contract the player can sign. Instead, Sasaki would be considered an international amateur, who can only be offered a rookie contract in the majors along with a signing bonus that comes out of the signing club’s international bonus pool.

Given the substantial decrease in financial compensation available for both player and team if an NPB player is posted before his 25th birthday, it’s extremely rare for a player to take that avenue; to this point, Shohei Ohtani is the only player to make the jump from NPB to MLB using this method rather than arriving in the majors via the posting system or free agency. For Sasaki to follow in his footsteps, Lotte would have to agree to post the right-hander. Janes notes that one way a player could secure an early posting from his club is by stipulating it in his contract with the team, although it’s not known if Sasaki has such a clause in his deal with the Marines. Indeed, it’s not even known who currently represents Sasaki, although Janes notes that Wasserman’s Joel Wolfe, who serves as Yamamoto’s agent and negotiated his $325MM deal with the Dodgers, is “rumored” to be set to handle his move to the majors.

If Sasaki were to be posted this winter, he would join a 2024-25 free agent class that figures to be exceptionally deep in starting pitching talent with Walker Buehler, Max Fried, and Corbin Burnes among the front-of-the-rotation talents expected to be available. Previously reported rumblings among executives seems to indicate that the general expectation within the game is that Sasaki is most likely to sign with the Dodgers, though that appears to be nothing more than speculation at this point. After all, teams would enjoy a much more even financial playing field in bidding for his services this winter than one would typically associate with a free agent of his caliber thanks to the aforementioned spending restrictions regarding players posted before the age of 25. The Dodgers are joined by the Yankees, Mets, Cardinals, and Rangers among teams that have reportedly already begun to scout Sasaki’s NPB starts this season.

I mean, it’s beyond my wildest dreams, but I think LAD and ATL are much more likely and personally, I’d rather he go to the AL if I could guarantee it versus risking the chance he goes to a NL team that isn’t Philly.

Dodgers or Padres, according to many rumors. If I was his advisor or friend, I would recommend that he wait an extra year and get an extra 200 million dollars. In that scenario, the destination would likely change.

Every team should go after Sasaki but probably only a few teams are in the running. Mets, Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, Possibly Padres, Braves, Rangers and Red Sox. ALL clubs should be fighting tooth and nail for Soto and Sasaki but Soto will probably stay on the Yankees and Sasaki ends up on the Dodgers. Thats sad and I’m jealous of those fans because they have owners who actually try to improve their team and win a WS.

I agree. I wish Tom Ricketts cared more about winning than his pocketbook. Yet the news will say the Cubs are involved, like they always do, but in the end it will be just to dip their beak in so they can say they tried, just like with Ohtani.

Every single team can easily afford Sasaki, it’s completely dependent on where he wants to play. And the Yankees are almost for sure not keeping Soto…. Unless they wanna pay $175+ mil for 5 players…. It’s not happening. much more likely he’ll be a Met

Key word CAN. I’d love to see a team on the rise like Pitt, Cincy, Seattle, KC, Minny, Milwaukee or Detroit get involved but just can’t see it. I know lots of people are annoyed with and troll Steve Cohen and the late Pads owner (Seilder) spending like there’s no tomorrow (myself included) but at least they try(tried) to improve their team and had good intentions.

Your right even Steinbrenner said Yanks would cut back on spending. This is the EVIL EMPIRE. What has this world come too if they wont pay Soto. Seriously though what contract do you think Sasaki gets? I might be too enamored by him bc I see him getting more than Yammamota.

There is about a 1% chance Seattle would sign him. For starters they have a huge presence in the Central/South American leagues and academies. So they will most likely spend their available $$$ before he is posted. And mist importantly they really don’t have a need at SP anytime in the near future. Their entire rotation is locked up for roughly the next 5 seasons.

Couldn’t Sasaki wait until Jan 15 so he can get all of the bonus money from a specific team? Mariners are also in the top tier of teams with the most bonus money. Out of those teams with the most money, they are the only competitive one on the west coast.

Thats true but other factors such as pressure by the fanbase (bigger fanbase means bigger expectations) or just a willingness to spend and win now (Ex. Steve Cohen) determine how many checks an owner writes. Some (most?) owners are oblivious to both of these factors.

Yup. Those fans will never know how painful it is being a fan of a team with a passionate-less owner. Half the teams are stuck with them. Until Manfred forces half the owners to sell to more passionate owners, the off-season will continue to be as interesting as watching paint dry. Gee,is Roki going to the Dodgers… Cubs? Or Mets/Yankees? Very exciting.

When he first came over, yes. All teams had an equal chance, with only the difference in their draft pool being an advantage or disadvantage financially.

You’re confusing the situations. Yes, they are all Japanese, but the team control and bonus situations are different here.

the players do have a say so they wouldn’t want to go to a poorly run team. well run teams will have a leg up which makes sense. if the money is the same everywhere the player will likely go where they have the best chance for success.

Can you explain what your idea of an “equal chance” is?

If you are the player, what are you looking for? What would make it so that you would give, say the Florida Marlins the same chance of signing you as the LA Dodgers?

Proximity to Japan? Well, Florida can’t address that, huh? Maybe offer exclusive use of a private jet X times a year? But can’t eliminate the extra hours travel time.

You want more money? Florida can OFFER more money, but can they actually PAY more money and still field a competitive team?

You want off-field opportunities? Miami has great nightlife and culture, but are you going to beat LA for that? Or NY for that matter?

HOW does MLB give FL or TB or Pitt or KC or CIN an “equal chance” at an international free agent without making that player… NOT a free agent? I don’t think its possible, but I’m open to possibilities.

roykirk1, because, as the article lays out, they aren’t unrestricted free agents. The amount of money offered is dependent on existing draft pools and these players enter the arbitration system.

It is very clearly outlined above in the article.

Dodgers are great at finding ways around the rules and it doesn’t even matter anymore since MLB loves Japan being a AAA for the Dodgers. Even if MLB did changes the rules it would only punish the rest of the league since he’s 100% going to the Dodgers and once they let that Ohtani contract go down they don’t even have to pay for building an All Star team.

The payroll is unsustainable. With the luxury tax, they’re paying twice as much for any player as their competitors would (unless they’re also in the same tax penalty). That makes it really hard to add to the roster when you need to fill holes.

This makes him more likely to sign with the Dodgers since all things being equal that’s the only team Japanese players care about. He’ll be able to offset his low starting salary by all the Japan/Dodgers advertising and play with his hero. It’s absolutely horrible that MLB allowed the Ohtani contract since now the Dodgers get as many superstars as they want and don’t even have to pay them.

Corbin Burnes and Max Fried don’t even remotely fit the description of having a “high number of innings” on their arms. They both are at 775 innings in 8 seasons for Fried and 7 season’s for Burnes. Last I checked 100 innings a year definitely doesn’t qualify as a high number.

Ohtani signed with the Angels because of the relationship Eppler started building in 2014 while Eppler was still with the Yankees and 4 years before the Angels signed Ohtani.

Only after becoming an MLB free agent 6 years later did he get 10/700.

        Pay attention.

So the best Japanese players are going to choose the Dodgers and the Dodgers get them almost for free.

If you thought Ohtani’s contract was controversial wait until Sasaki signs for one million this winter as an “amatuer”.

Can you give a list of some other potential Asian players who could be coming to the MLB? How close is Soichiro Yamazaki? Hiroya Miyagi is only 22, but wasn’t he talking about coming to the MLB? He has 5 years service in Japan. I think they need 9. Yamazaki has 8 years. They were both teammates of Yamamoto.

It feels like Japanese pro leagues are a AAA organization that feeds its best players to MLB. On the one hand, Japanese fans are probably very proud of the successes of their home-grown stars in the US. On the other hand, they are watching diluted teams. I wonder what the consensus is there. Mostly upset that their stars are gone or mostly proud?

I don’t see that happening. He has much more incentive to sign on the West Coast with all things being equal.

I think he’s destined for Team Japan, err, I mean the LA Dodgers.

Right? Who knew Imanaga was going to be this good? Obviously both are great pitchers and I see both having great results for their contracts but purely on cost/benefit, so far Imanaga has been a fricken steal especially in comparison. Glad I picked up Imanaga in a bunch of leagues as Yamamoto was going way too early. Even as a big Dodger fan, can’t be a homer in fantasy baseball!

I can say that I did not want the Yankees to pursue Imanaga. His FB velo is lower than average and he was a bit homer prone. That’s a recipe for disaster in MLB.

But, I admit, so far I was dead wrong. I do think there will be a league-wide adjustment to him within a year or so; but maybe he’s just much better than many thought he would be.

By the end of this season there is a good chance the Mets will no longer have Quintana, Sevy and Manea. They will have penciled in for 2025 Senga, McGill, Peterson and Scott. The Mets will be a major player for Sasaki. In Queens he won’t be second fiddle like in LA, Chicago or SD. It’s Mets or Dodgers. LGM!

East Coast teams are at a huge disadvantage. For starters they’re a lot longer flight to Japan. They also don’t have as many Japanese residents in their cities compared to the West Coast teams.

He’s gonna wait until he’s 25. It makes the most sense as Yamamoto has shown. You leave early and fail you never get your bag. You impress with gaudy numbers and as Yamamoto has shown you can be a $300 million dollar man without ever throwing a big league pitch, just off of Japanese production and potential upside.

AJ Preller has openly and publicly expressed interest for signing Sasaki. How are the Padres not even named here? San Diego is a front runner to sign him.

I honestly don’t think they’re in the running at all.
