Andrew McCutchen Planning To Continue Playing Beyond 2024

By Darragh McDonald | June 21, 2024 at 9:31am CDT

Outfielder/designated hitter Andrew McCutchen has seemingly been reinvigorated by a return to the Pirates in recent years and he doesn’t plan on stopping. “In my mind, this isn’t my last year,” McCutchen said to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “As long as my body holds up and I’m not embarrassing myself out there, I wanna keep going.”

McCutchen, now 37, has spent most of his career as a Pirate. He was drafted by Pittsburgh back in 2005 and went on to rack up huge accolades from his 2009 major league debut through the end of the 2017 season. In that time, he hit 203 home runs and slashed .291/.379/.487 for a 137 wRC+. He also stole 171 bases while serving as the club’s regular center fielder. He was an All-Star five times in that stretch and was the National League MVP in 2013, the first of three straight years in which he guided the Bucs to the postseason.

The club then slipped from contention for a few years and traded the final season of McCutchen’s contract to the Giants and he would bounce to the Yankees, Phillies and Brewers for a few seasons. With Milwaukee in 2022, he hit just .237/.316/.384 for a wRC+ of 98 in his age-35 season.

He returned to Pittsburgh in 2023 via a one-year, $5MM deal. Given the downward trend of his performance, some expected his return to PNC Park to be little more than a feel-good story for a rebuilding club with little to cheer for in recent years.

But as mentioned, the reunion has coincided with a nice bounceback for the veteran. That’s not to say that he’s back to MVP levels but he was able to slash .256/.378/.397 last year, good enough for a 115 wRC+. He and the Bucs then doubled down, reuniting on another one-year, $5MM deal. To emphasize that McCutchen is committed to continuing his playing career, Mackey relays that he actually lobbied for a multi-year deal this offseason. However, the Bucs had a bit of hesitation since the 2023 season ended with McCutchen on the injured list due to a partial tear of his left Achilles tendon.

That injury seems to be long forgotten, as McCutchen has been back in good form here in 2024. He already has ten home runs, just two shy of last year’s total, and is hitting .241/.338/.401 for a wRC+ of 112.

With the results still coming, it’s perfectly understandable that he wants to keep things rolling. Mackey suggests there’s at least some hesitation on the club’s part, as they may prefer to have the designated hitter slot open in order to rotate other players through. McCutchen has played 20 innings in right field this year but has otherwise been in the DH slot. Though Mackey also reminds readers that owner Bob Nutting has said McCutchen can stay a Pirate as long as he wants.

There may come a time when the goals of the franchise clash with those of McCutchen as an individual. He said multiple times in 2023 that he didn’t intend on playing for another club for the rest of his career. The Bucs are gradually creeping out of its long rebuild, as they hovered around the Wild Card race last year and are doing so again this year. But for now, he’s a key part of the reason why they are competing, as his 112 wRC+ is second on the team among qualified hitters, trailing only Bryan Reynolds.

Cruz is the one who needs to pick up a 1b glove. Huge wingspan and agile enough to play the infield.

He definitley has more than enough left in the tank. Since Paul Skenes’ debut on May 11, he is batting .295 with a .870 OPS. His 13.6% barrel rate is th best of his career by far, as is his 17.8% chase rate.

I doubted him after last season’s injury and the poor start to this season because the Pirates could really do with Cruz at DH as often as possible, but he’s proven me wrong by putting up a better than average batting line.

admittedly, Rowdy is hitting the ball better and with more authority but he’s still not the power hitter that Cherington had hoped for when he signed him as a free agent last winter
He ( Tellez ) recently said during an after game interview that he went back to his stance at the plate which he accounts for the improvement in his batting
          So my question is simple

Why did he change his stance to begin with and was it a result of Haines’ ongoing tinkering with batters’ approaches at the plate?

First.. I’m ready for Haines to be gone.. so this is not a ‘in his defense’ plea to keep him but more of a ‘there are many sides to a story’. It is possible Rowdy went back to his old stance because in working with is hitting coach they decided that was a good thing to try. It is also possible he made the initial change which apparently back fired in the off season before he even met Haines. Haines could have created the problem or helped fix it. His overall volume of work is not good,

Rowdy was bad last year before Haines so if you had a year so bad your team didn’t want to pay even your arbitration and you had to sign a 1 year deal with Pittsburgh you would be looking for changes because the next stop is out of the majors. If he changed between 2022 and 2023 then I have no idea.

Rowdy was also injured last year and still managed to hit 13 homers
He isn’t injured this year and has managed to hit only 2.

On the topic of Haines, he follows the philosophy of Cherington that players take as many pitches as possible to get into the opposing team’s bullpen early
Which could explain why players like Johnson are having such lousy success at the plate
From what I’ve read, that’s the reason Haines was hired in the first place
          Same philosophy

Ironically, Santana wanted to return to Pittsburgh but was asking $5 million dollars
Instead and because this franchise is cheap, Cherington signed Tellez to a one year deal worth $3.2 million
Santana last I checked has 11 homers and 34 runs batting in while Rowdy has 3 homers and has driven in 17 runs

Santana doesn’t play in the outfield and played predominantly last year at first base so what you’re saying is a mute point

We both agree about Haines underwear and about THE MORON. I just hope cherrington makes a trade or 2 at the deadline. With keller, skenes and Jones, that’s a formidable 3some in a playoff series. And I look for them to protect skenes and Jones, over the innings pitched situation. For those who think both will be shutdown during a pennant chase, I think they come from the small hands line of thinking, DUMB. there are many things they can do to protect them, and keep them ready for the stretch. It would be suicide for the pirates to shut both down if they are indeed in contention.

Skenes could be fine with just limiting him to 5 innings. Jones can go to pen or be shut down for a month. Pretend like he had a injury, takes it easy for month, go to minors a bit, get built up for playoffs. If Pirates fall completely off in that months span he can just stay shutdown. Right now 1 rotation spot. Perez back real soon. Gonzales coming back a bit later but he is on his way. He can replace Jones. Hopefully they all stay healthy. Either way Jones has been worked to much to go all season and playoffs. Ashcraft can be a replacement. Or Ortiz.

Second on the team to Reynolds with a 112 OPS+ pretty much says it all about the Pirates offense. I though Kebryan Hayes was supposed to have turned a corned and he’s sitting on a pretty mediocre statline. Good thing they began to give Nick Gonzales a regular role.

Their starters aren’t anything beyond being platoon players on any other team
With the exception of Cutch, Reynolds, Hayes and Gonzalez
Connor Joe was never a full time player until he came to Pittsburgh and his stats show why
Jack Suwinski has regressed from last season

What’s alternately bad about some of the players you named is disposition
Cruz waves the white flag against left handers then jogs to first on ground balls
Hayes is Mister Aloof. Maybe he just wants to look like Mister Cool. His sunflower seed incident last season demonstrated his priorities. And too often, he looks like he’s just going through the motions
Suwinski needs a good sports psychologist at this point and Davis isn’t too far behind him. These guys are often defeated before their first swing. In addition, both seem to unaware of where the strike zone is and sure have a tough time picking up spin pitches
There are a gaggle of guys here like Olivares, Triolo, Taylor and Joe who can give you the blind squirrel rbi once in a while, but they aren’t major league hitters.
Rowdy is the kind of guy who can suddenly catch fire for a week or two and then revert to his space at the Mendoza Line

I was a bit unsure at first because it clogs the DH spot but he’s been productive and the least of the Pirates issues. Realistically, he shouldn’t be the second or third best offensive player on your team, but here they are. Locking in a fan favorite productive DH shouldn’t be an issue if they know how to use the rest of their budget. Jumping on Tellez so early in free agency was silly. Perez made sense. Gonzales was a trade and extremely injury prone, and I’m not sure he’s alive at this point, Taylor made sense but totally fell off, and Chapman was an overpay by at least double but I think they wanted to trade him.

Yeah the blocking of the dh spot is huge problem. Pirates have so many amazing hitters. Like Suwinski and Taylor can’t play at the same time but if Cutch wasn’t here one of them could dh!

          1. Is standing out in left field wearing him out? Judging by him playing everyday and having or had the longest hit streak in mlb I would say no.

          2. Now a ss could use a off day from playing the field. Fortunately Cruz hits .152 vs lhp so there are plenty of off days for him that don’t require him playing dh.

          3. It was just a joke but thinking on it they are perfectly fine having full time dh. What other reasons are there for dh? Having more than 9 good bats? Lol thats a big nope. Having 2 catchers that could hit? Haha nope. How about a catcher who hits so good you want his bat in lineup even when not catching? 3 for 3 baby.

actually Reynolds is among the leaders in outfield assists and is a better defender in his position than most give him credit for so using him as a DH makes left field a weaker defensive option

No one wanted Taylor as he was the last free agent signing by Pittsburgh and missed the first few games of spring training
Otherwise another team would’ve signed him

Despite what everyone says about his defense, this is a team that needs to score runs and Taylor contributes nothing to that effort
      He was a wasted signing

Year to year with the Pirates until he either calls it quits or sees his performance drop to the level of a bench bat is how I’d proceed as the Pirates GM. Has given a lot to that team over his career and agree with a lot of the earlier commenters has demonstrated himself to be a good mentor to a new Pirates team.

McCutch is a “Class Act” and great for the team, the clubhouse for fans.

He could play a lot longer as if they use him wisely @ 1B, DH and corner OF.
I can see McCutch as a Coach or Manager when he decides to hang up the spikes.
He is a smart player and well liked providing great clubhouse chemistry.

I could even see McCutch in the Front Office if an office job would even appeal to him I don’t know.

Tonight’s game should be interesting. Tampa’s starter is averaging a strike out per inning and the kings of ks are in the lineup for the Pirates
    Suwinski, Joe and Cruz

Will it be another double digit strike out performance by this lackluster offense?

I’m interested to see a few things moving forward
-Can their starting pitching keep them in games for 5-6 innings 90-95% of the time?
-Can middle relief improve to the point that they’re handing leads to the late inning pitchers?
-Can the closing crew be the shutdown squad we hope for?
      – What will the final 5 starting pitcher group look like if they’re in it in September? Particularly if Skenes and Jones are shut down

I didn’t note anything offensively. There’s no reason. Only Reynolds is a hitter here and since this is a Cutch thread, I still regard him as being a dangerous guy in many situations. (I would never throw him a steady diet of fastballs, though)

I didn’t make note of any possible trades because that’s pointless, too. If anyone saw the possible trade targets from the PG the other day, they probably blew their coffee from their nose. Sheesh. Is that what it’s come to. One step above the dumpster?

Pitching is the only thing that can carry this team forward in an average NL. There’s no use in debating anything else. Their hitting is woeful, their manager and coaches don’t play or train to win and their front office is pathetic.

But yeah, they’re in the hunt.

Platoon of Cruz Hayes would get mvp votes. Davis Bart platoon in 2024 is basically having Mike Piazza as our catcher!

Simple things like avg obp ops. Anyone with a phone tablet or computer can look up the data easily and free. Unfortunately we live in a world where people will completely ignore facts and believe what they want to believe even if it’s obviously not true. Nothing I can do to change your mind. The data is right there so if you don’t even want to look at it and you won’t take my word on it that’s fine. Just keep believing what you want to believe instead if what’s true if that’s what makes you happy.

Rebuilding is absolutely necessary. They need a catcher who can hit, and Endy isn’t yet a proven hitter
They need a power hitting first baseman
They need a power hitting right fielder

          And long relievers
They have nothing of substance to trade except for Bednar and if they are serious about competing next year they will need a closer and trading Bednar wouldn’t make sense

Adding at least 5 players would be construed as a rebuild

You do realize rebuilding would mean trading Cruz Reynolds Keller Bednar to get these power hitters and they won’t be proven mlb power hitters, they will be prospects. Rebuild, build (something) again after it has been damaged or destroyed.

How about keep the good veteran players and spend some $ to improve the team? Or trade prospects for veteran players? That sounds better than a rebuild.

Or do as you suggested and just start claiming all these great players that other teams have been adding to their teams while Cherington has done nothing the past 2 days!!!!!!

Rebuild then. I love prospects so I am down for it. Would be a awful decision for most fans but great for me. Although I have doubts that the prospects will be developed into power hitting 1b rf and catcher. That seems just as likely as Nutting spending $ to get them.

Only realistic option I see is trading your good pitching prospects, combine 1 of them with a failed development bat and hope you get lucky with injuries and kept the right pitching prospects.

I don’t even worry about it. All for having Jack work with another hitting coach. Work on things where it doesn’t matter. But Bae isn’t any better. Maybe he gets motivated like Gonzales and awesome. If not I think it’s more likely he goes the way of Tucker Kramer. Have no confidence in Pirates hitting or fielding development. I am fine with Gorski getting called up. Should be Jack 2.0 but what the heck. No rush though. They don’t have the 40 man spots and he has plenty to work on still in minors. No worse than Jack Bae and actually better because he will hit some hrs. Rather him try to improve though in minors.

Better question why use 2 pitchers of same arm. Go lefty righty. Make them have a weak lineup 1st time through.

It’s done so because your opener should have great stuff and be successful. You see what your team can do in 2 innings. If he is awful you can pull him early and give your starter a try. Of you start Ortiz and he is awful you are stuck because you need innings out of him. With opener and then Ortiz if Ortiz struggles 2nd or third time through lineup and you have a lead you can pull him and going for a win justifies burning through your pen. So starting Ortiz would be a awful move.

The best part is, since the NL has such parity this year—many teams equally as bad as the Pirates—“competing” with record at .500 or just below will be hailed as the fruition of the Pirates 5 year plan
Nutting will blow the horn for offensive additions. Cherington will comply, with a name or two from the list we saw in the PG a couple days ago—a veritable who’s who of nobodies—they’ll continue to “compete” as they struggle to 78 or 79 wins—but we’ll be deluged with the idea “they’re in the hunt….come out and see the young Bucs!”

If just talking about starting pitching I think good great amazing fantastic could be used. I would go with great. Skenes is fantastic. Keller is as well with best era in nl since may 1st or something. I heard that somewhere so not sure if it’s true but he’s been fantastic. Jones Falter good great. With Gonzales Perez this rotation might be best in baseball. Unfortunately they got hurt. But still one of the better ones.

there has been at least two dozen team transactions since this article was posted and not one was about the Bucs
Being satisfied with the status quo is yet another example of how horrible this franchise’s management has become

Neither Jeffries or Santana deserve spots on the roster. Gorski does at least deserves a chance considering how badly the offense has been this year
They dfa Hernandez instead of working on his velocity. Same goes with Contrares

Did I get that correct? All I did was copy paste so it should be.

Contreras Hernandez were dfa long before 2 days ago. I didn’t ask about them. I asked who was available that another teams claimed, signed, traded for that the Pirates passed up on in the last 2 days that you thought was good and they should have added? You complain about it so who was it? I didn’t see anyone worth adding myself so inquiring minds want to know. Contreras Hernandez are old news. I want to know about these 2 days. Or actually the past day and 16 hours. But we can go 2 days even. There isn’t a single transaction since this article that made me think well the Pirates should have done that. Really didn’t see anything at all. Some unexciting players got recalled or option, the pirates do that all the time. Few guys need tj. Few others have forearm tightness and will need tj. You wanna see a article about about one of the pirates worst players getting option down to Indy? It will happen soon. Wanna see Skenes Keller leave game with forearm tightness? What kind of awful fan are you? I didn’t see jack it happen in these articles since this article was posted. Just asking what I missed in the two dozen articles since this one? Don’t give a crap about Hernandez Contreras.

      1. I never said if I did or didn’t like your opinion. Didn’t even ? your opinion. I simply wanted to know what have these other teams done the past day and a half that you wished Pirates would have done. You now have answered that. 2 The only fact you gave me was they gave up on them. Why are you telling me facts don’t lie? I never questioned that they gave up on them. Younger, lots of team control, they obviously gave up on them.

Personally I don’t want to see any Pirates articles. Any trade rumor is just a rumor. Teams are focused on the draft what now. Sure might be a few trades before them but 90 some percent will be between draft and deadline. Any news now is mostly bad news. Injuries, failed players, shuffling around the chairs on the Titanic. Now’s the time to call up prospects who are ready. Gorski isn’t ready but if you want to bring him up anyways that’s fine. Ashcraft could be ready soon but isn’t needed. In an emergency you could bring him up. That’s all I got. Borucki Perez Gonzales will be back soon. Davis Bart probably sometime. Reliever roulette. You will be seeing all kinds of Pirates articles. But they already had their exciting articles Jones Skenes Gonzales. Last year Endy Davis Triolo Bae Peguero Alika CSN. Cherington doesn’t sit on prospects like Huntington did. Davis wasn’t even developed enough to play a position they called him up. I am not going to question him for not promoting someone. If anything he brings them up too soon. They aren’t ready and get here and struggle. Coaches can’t help. Players have to fix them themselves.
