Brewers Acquire Dallas Keuchel From Mariners

By Darragh McDonald | June 25, 2024 at 11:59pm CDT

The Brewers have acquired left-hander Dallas Keuchel from the Mariners, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic on X. The M’s will receive cash considerations in return, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com on X. The lefty was with the M’s on a minor league deal and not on the 40-man roster, meaning he won’t immediately need a 40-man spot with the Brewers.

Keuchel, 36, signed a minors deal with the Mariners and has made 13 Triple-A starts on the year to this point. He has allowed 3.93 earned runs per nine innings, despite pitching in the hitter-friendly environs of the Pacific Coast League. His 15.6% strikeout rate on the year is subpar but he’s always succeeded by limiting walks and keeping the ball on the ground, which has been the case again this year. He has a 7.6% walk rate and 59.5% ground ball rate for the Rainiers.

That’s generally been the recipe for Keuchel in his career, as he has thrown 1625 2/3 innings with a 4.02 ERA, 18.1% strikeout rate, 7.4% walk rate and 57.7% ground ball rate. At his peak, he won the 2015 American League Cy Young by posting a 2.48 ERA with the Astros, but his results have tailed off since then. He has a 6.29 ERA since the start of 2021, bouncing to the White Sox, Diamondbacks, Rangers and Twins in that time.

Those lesser results of late are why he had to settle for a minor league deal and why he may not have been able to crack Seattle’s rotation. They may lose Bryan Woo to the injured list, as he departed last night’s start with some hamstring tightness. But even if Woo is bound for the IL, the Mariners have a rotation consisting of Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert and Bryce Miller, with Emerson Hancock and Jhonathan Díaz candidates to come up and replace Woo.

The Brewers, however, have far more motivation for taking a shot on a veteran like Keuchel. They knew coming into the season that Brandon Woodruff would have to spend the whole season on the injured list recovering from shoulder surgery, but he has since been given plenty of company on the IL. Wade Miley and Robert Gasser both required UCL surgery and are also out for the year, while guys like Joe Ross and DL Hall are on the shelf due to other issues. Jakob Junis has been reinstated from the IL but has been working in relief.

That has left Milwaukee with a fairly patchwork rotation behind Freddy Peralta. The club moved Bryse Wilson from the bullpen to a starting role and he has a passable 4.24 ERA but less impressive peripherals. Colin Rea is similar, as he’s a 33-year-old journeyman with a 3.62 ERA on the year despite a tepid 15.6% strikeout rate. Tobias Myers and Carlos Rodríguez are both in their debut seasons and have limited experience. Rodríguez has a 7.30 ERA while Myers is at 3.12, though the underlying numbers suggest that performance from Myers may not be sustainable.

It’s far easier to see Keuchel slotting into that mix than the one in Seattle, so the Mariners have pocketed some cash and let him pursue an opportunity with the Brewers. Despite the rotation challenges, the Brewers are atop the National League Central, five games clear of the Cardinals, and could use some veteran stability between now and perhaps making further moves at the trade deadline.

If Milwaukee plans to add Keuchel to their roster, they will need to make a corresponding move, though that shouldn’t be a problem. As mentioned, Gasser is out for the year but he has not yet been transferred to the 60-day IL, so that’s an easy way for the Brewers to open a spot.

I think he was referring to the waiver order in case Kuechel got released like Mariners fan suggested above. The Brewers would be 25-26th in the waiver order

Kuechel was on a minor league deal and not the 40 man. There wouldn’t be waivers on him had he been released. That said, the M’s were not gonna release him

I agree with Card AG. Most of these guys have played baseball since they were little boys. Some had dreams of playing in the majors. Once you get there it’s got to be a great feeling to put the uniform on for the first time. Keuchel is one of these guys who lost it in a hurry. His biggest draw right now is that he’s a lefty. If he can find any of the form he had the year he won the Cy Young, he’ll be a bargain for the Brewers.

It’s boarderline selfish to be playing for nothing when you could be living life with your family. After all that’s why the players are paid so great so they can retire and live the life they like to live with their families.

It is complicated to try and understand why a player who’s made his money and had a great career would keep going. If that’s what he wants to do, it’s his life, but it’s obviously not about the money because he could probably make more doing something else at this point.

In his spot, I would have tried to go to Japan.

Prime example of a well run organization in the same division.

The Brewers get an established major league pitcher to fill a spot. The Reds call up a 26 year old career minor leaguer.

There is a reason there have been no playoff series wins since 1995 and no playoff appearances at all since 2012.

What do you call a 26 year old, career minor leaguer? I believe they would be called a prospect. There was a time where most got called up at 24-26. Of course, they were much more polished than the 21-23 year olds that get called up today. They spent time in the minors learning things like basic fielding, baserunning, and how to actually put the ball in play using that wood thingy. Pitchers would learn more than two pitches, and know how pitching to contact could allow them to pitch deeper into games.

He’s pitched a grand total of 150 innings in the minors and he’s been pretty effective (3.71 ERA and 11.7 K/9) aside from walking too many batters. I’d much rather call up a dude like him than hoping you can wring something out of Dallas Keuchel.

Why does it bother people that the man continues to play? It’s not his team. He is not rostering himself. The people that know baseball better than you and I still consider him worthy of a roster spot ahead of some kid.

So as yourself, why does it bother me so much? Am I just jealous of his desire to compete? Is there an older person blocking me from a promotion at my job? Am I just a mean and nasty person in general?

Because our Roaster is full of Ham and Eggers and never Weres. Just look up the numbers of our whole Bullpen! He fits right in. We need to trade for quality young starters or develop them. Believe me, I hope I am wrong and the Brewers continue to get career years out of our current team. However, the law of Ham and Eggers eventually comes true: The more they play, the more they revert to their averages. I see DK as now qualifying as one.

first off, what team is just going to trade quality young starters?

second off, the Brewers have done that and are doing that… trades for guys like Coleman crow, Bradley blalock, DL Hall, Robert Gasser coupled with last years draft class chock full of prep pitchers (check out some of the reports on our young SP in single A ball). that’s not even mentioning guys like Misiorowski, Rodriguez, Logan Henderson etc…

the Keuchel move bridges a gap. he’s stretched out for 150-175 innings this season. we need that.

Keuchel has made his money, so he’s clearly playing still because he wants to at this point. It honestly makes me root for him more. If he wants to pitch until he’s 60, and teams will sign him, I say go for it.

With starting pitchers dropping like flies all around the league it’s no surprise Keuchel is still going. Word is Oil Can Boyd is prime for a comeback…

I like the add. They need consistent arm with ground ball talent for their stellar defense and pretty good O to back him. He’ll eat innings.

I wish him well., He looked totally cooked his last few turns through the majors, but perhaps he’s made some changes, or the rest helped, or the Brewers believe they can elevate what he does have.

1600+ major league innings? Wow, what’s the conversion of innings to TJ surgeries? I don’t recall him ever having TJ.

with the M*A*S*H unit that is the Brewer pitching staff… what can a minor league contract hurt? let’s see what Dallas can do.

No worries. The Mexican League awaits, where he can join Fernando Rodney, now 47 and still coming in late in games and giving up prodigious home runs.

Keuchel has never been a flame-thrower, so that might be why he never needed TJ.

wonder if the market will increase the valuation of that slice of pitcher then. sure, teams will pay top dollar for the flamethrowers with funky sliders but that’s years of: great-great-TJ-recovery-decent-2nd TJ kind of years versus a decent run of, in this example 6, good but not incredible years.

seems after you average out the contract years paying for recovery… that the value is in that Maddox kind of pitcher. is the delta between a superstar flamethrower and a solid control pitcher in those few seasons that we actually see a Degrom pitch worth the loss of WAR due to recovery and later innings limits?

(BTW, I realize I picked a the unicorn of control pitchers with Maddox, insert your own choice of that kind of pitcher).

Tobias Myers was a mid round pick by the Duquette regime for the Os in 2016. They were remarkable in finding gems.

Myers 2016 6th round. Traded for Tim Beckham, then for Junior Caminero.

    Tanner Scott 2014 6tb John Means 2014 11th.

    Garrett Cleavinger 2015 3rd Cedric Mullins 2015 13th Nick Vespi 2015 18th

    Jonah Heim 2013 4th Trey Mancini 2013 8th Mike Yastrzemski 2013 14th

    Christian Walker 2012 4th Josh Hader 2012 19th

That doesn’t count anyone picked in the first two rounds. Duquette also picked up Santander in the Rule 5 (and picked and dropped Nestor Cortes) and found Felix Bautista as a discarded international FA.

Elias has appropriately credited DD for solid talent acquisition.

The Angels have signed left-hander CD Pelham to a minor league deal, as announced by the Mexican League’s Leones de Yucatan on Friday. June 2nd 2024 – mentioned on this website.

it can be done – Bauer would be a bigger deal because he was a MLB player in PRIME so its really an outlier that would change course for BrewCrew

Bonds made a choice to use PEDs that were illegal at the time. What exactly did Bauer do? Perform consensual behavior with another adult? Is that against the law? If so, I guess most people have broken that law. When do the trials start for all adults?

He was showing how ridiculous how they’re no enforcement going on in the league, despite the rule in existence. He literally advertised on this channel that everyone is doing it. Then when the league couldn’t ignore it, the fallout happened. League should have stood in front of the public and apologized for making a mockery of the game and not enforcing their own rules.

As I said, slightly better than bush league.

Continually some of you criticize ownership and the GM about lack of trades. But the vast majority of times they were right to not make trades. But the typical fan never has to answer for their continual wrong picks they want signed. Theirs only so much money to go around and allot of these overrated players are on the hook for years. Lets go over a few who you’ll glamoured for this past offseason.
Blake snell ( has sucked and wanted 20 million.
    Jorge polanco (about 12 million)
Max kepler ( probably at least 8 million)
Randy arozarena (over 10 million and hitting 191)
Eugenio Suarez (wanted him to stay a mariner and he has continued to regress with age).
These are the ones that were most typically discussed. You’ll act like we’re the Dodgers, with an endless supply of money. The Mariners are an average size market. Signing just 1 or 2 of those players woulda hamstrung us for a couple years. Trade every prospect for continued overrated players. Who hold you accountable for the hacks on the GM you continually make. There needs to be a dang database that keeps track of the players you want signed, so YOU have to answer for your past comments.

Dallas will start today’s game against The Rangers who have struggled against left handed pitching this year. Could be quite the clever move for both the Brewers and Mariners as they try to extend their respective division leads with this one move.

Seems like a nice courtesy move. Would have been nice to keep the depth if things went really sideways, but also shows that they are willing to work with vets when other opportunities come up essentially giving him to them. I would have requested something odd in the deal instead of $1 just to make it memorable.
