Mookie Betts was hit on the left hand by a Dan Altavilla fastball today, causing Betts to drop to the ground in immediate pain and then leave the field. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times) after the game that Betts has a fractured bone in the hand and will be out of action “for some time,” though the former AL MVP won’t require surgery.
More will be known about Betts’ status and a potential recovery timeline in the coming days, but this is undoubtedly a huge blow for the Dodgers. As with any wrist- or hand-related injury, there is plenty of potential for lingering after-effects even after a player is officially cleared for action, given how any changes to grip or hand positioning on a bat can alter a swing. The first order of business for Betts and the Dodgers is just to manage this injury and the recovery as well as possible, though the concern won’t go away until Betts is both back on the field and displaying his usual superstar form at the plate.
Heading into today’s game, Betts was hitting .307/.407/.493 with 10 homers over a league-leading 327 plate appearances, adding 16 doubles and nine stolen bases (in 10 attempts) to those impressive numbers. In addition to that typically excellent offensive production, Betts has also been playing a key defensive role for the Dodgers as their everyday shortstop, a role Betts adopted during Spring Training after Gavin Lux was moved off the position. While defensive metrics have been mixed at best on Betts’ glovework, simply the fact that Betts was willing to change positions and at least passably handled the shortstop role just added to his importance to the L.A. roster.
The Dodgers were still expected to pursue middle infield help at the deadline, both because Lux hasn’t hit much, and to potentially hasten Betts’ move back to second base if a new everyday shortstop was obtained. Today’s developments probably make it even likelier that Los Angeles will look to add a shortstop regardless of how much time Betts misses, though it remains to be seen whether or not the Dodgers now look to make an acquisition sooner rather than later. The team will first want to access Betts’ health, of course, and teams with available infield depth might suddenly raise their asking prices if they perceive the Dodgers are in any way desperate.
In the short term, Roberts said that Miguel Vargas will be called back up from Triple-A to rejoin the infield mix. Miguel Rojas will get the bulk of regular shortstop duty, with Enrique Hernandez also factoring in at both shortstop and third base. Max Muncy is still sidelined with a lingering oblique injury and Roberts said today that Muncy’s recovery has been “even slower than expected,” so it is anyone’s guess as to when the third baseman might be able to help a suddenly-depleted Dodgers infield. Cavan Biggio was recently acquired from the Blue Jays to add to the depth mix, so Betts’ absence will open up more playing time for Biggio at second or third base.
Rojas has long been an excellent defender, and he has been surprisingly productive at the dish with a .278/.328/.444 slash line over 116 PA this season. His 122 wRC+ would be the second-best mark of his 11-year MLB career, though it is obviously a reach to expect Rojas to keep this up for a lengthy amount of time, given that he isn’t making much hard contact at the plate.
Even though the Dodgers lineup is full of big bats, losing Betts also underlines the club’s somewhat top-heavy nature. Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Teoscar Hernandez have all been raking and Muncy was hitting well pre-injury, but Lux, Enrique Hernandez, and Chris Taylor have all been ice cold, while James Outman was struggling so much that Los Angeles optioned the outfielder to Triple-A.
With a 44-29 record, the Dodgers have arguably built up enough of a cushion to withstand losing Betts for a bit of time, as there doesn’t appear to be any danger that Los Angeles would suddenly fall out of the playoff race. However, it can’t be ignored that the Dodgers are now without Betts, Muncy, and more than an entire rotation’s worth of starting pitchers, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Michael Grove joining the long list of injured hurlers earlier today. The Dodgers have been able to both withstand and even thrive despite heavy injuries in past seasons, yet if this missing personnel is enough to drop the Dodgers out of a first-round postseason bye, it will give the team an even more difficult path to a World Series title.
Damn that sucks
Positive out of it, Dodgers will get a great daily defensive SS. I hope this forces them to leave Rojas at SS for the remainder of the year.
Zerbs
Getting less production out of SS is a weird positive
Losing Yosh and Mook on the same day, that is unfortunate- time for Bobby and Kersh to come to the rescue
The Dodgers are so good and so deep they should take their time with Betts and bring him back slowly even after he’s cleared. They won’t be in a playoff race get him fully healthy for when it counts. They could use a shortstop though I agree with the article it wasn’t Betts’ natural position anyway he’s just good enough to do it adequately a testament to his skill
The Dodgers are built to weather this storm. Not many clubs are…
helluva 24 hours. heal well Yoshi and Mookie.
& Michael…
That hit looked so bad it made my hand hurt.
felt so bad for Mook. he works so hard.
Two major players lost in two days. Baseball has a way of making things even
weird thing to say
More like idiotic
I like it. Let’s call it “Gods Salary Cap”
Bkbk
Toddlers die in car accidents, infants in third world countries and sometimes the USA die of malnutrition and starvation, cancer takes people in their middle age, and you think that God is busy micromanaging which players go on the IL?
@Manny
Given the direction you went with that joke, it must be real sad living in your head.
Hes also busy rigging elections Manny amirite?
I forgot the Dodgers have won all those 162 game championships over the last few years…
*Yawns* I’m so glad I get to read the same joke repeated more times than I can count again today. Get a life
Not wrong though
boogie
Completely wrong, actually
No, it isn’t
I hate it for the players, but not the franchise.
Let’s see how cute Friedman gets with this news.
I certainly don’t like seeing two of the game’s top players go down to injury within 24 hours. I’m still voting for Betts for the All-Star team. Let the manager figure out the starter, and/or pick the #2 candidate. Mookie deserves the starter vote.
I said it a million times. You can’t buy championships. Baseball gods won’t let it happen. That’s why you play the game and not on paper. I bet they go out and buy more
Hate seeing injuries to any player on any team. That said, injuries are a part of the game…
Sucks to see, and yes, even when they’re Dodgers.
I don’t know what happened in New York, Gwynny, but I thought for sure the Padres had turned a corner and were ready to pull off ten in a row. That seems to be a feature with this Padres team, they look really good and play well for awhile but then suddenly look feeble against an inferior team.
Ignorant – Same can be said about many teams, including my Red Sox.
How else can you explain them winning consecutive series against the Phillies and Yankees immediately after struggling to split against the ChiSox.
That’s why they play the games!
Ignorant
“I thought for sure the Padres had turned a corner and were ready to pull off ten in a row.”
Why on earth would you think that? What?
I don’t know what happened in New York,
==========================
I said at the start of the season that the Padres reminded me of my RS. They have some talent, but are a bit thin. They can play .500, but they’ll need some breaks to see anything close to .550.
And the Mets (and I will later deny saying this) are better than their record.
He was my NL MVP so far this year, and always a class act, so a big loss. Injuries are a part of sports unfortunately.
Brew – Totally agree!
I always shake my head when some here complain about Red Sox injuries as if no other teams experience them.
“If Casas was healthy we would have beaten Philly”.
Yeah, and what if Realmuto, Turner and Marsh were healthy? Of course there’s silence after that.
How is he a class act? Wasn’t he cheating with the Red Sox in 2018?
Neon – No, Mookie was not cheating in 2018 and his numbers over his career prove that. He’s not Marwin or Springer.
lol ok so he was the only guy on the team not cheating? got it. y’all will believe anything.
Dodgers are an IF short.
Expect Vargas to get recalled. Maybe Lipcius. Rojas to get the majority of starts at SS. And a deal for SS depth.
Dodgers may targeting a Bichette trade after all…
The Dodgers can have Jeter Downs back. Downs and Rizzo for Freeman. LoL
I’m willing to toss in Jon Berti too. More seriously, I can see the Dodgers targeting Bichette, but there’s no way the Blue Jays will be surrendering their season in June, and a month on Mookie might be back.
They also won’t accept a package centered around Gavin Lux as has been written on other sites
Rsox
“They also won’t accept a package centered around Gavin Lux as has been written on other sites”
You don’t know if that is true or not
If Atkins is trying to get fired, it’s true. If not, then it’s not true.
bichette is very poor offensively. Why would they do that?
As a Braves fan, I hate to see this. I would also like to welcome you to our 2024 season from hell.
you guys have had your share of woes. hang in there,
This is like in the movies when the rich charecters crash their bentleys and then commiserate about having to drive BMWs. Ya’ll have no idea how foolish you look.
Comparing hardworking ubertalented superstars Betts and Acuna jr to frivolous toys isn’t what a baseball fan would do.
I’m sure you’re following the metaphor
Bravo to you both
The Dodgers probably needed a shortstop even without this injury. Now they definitely could use one.
Bichette is all yours. Take him, I beg you.
Deck
LOL…please be named BJ’s GM immediately
Even DBacks fans can say this isn’t good; when the best players are out, it’s bad for the game. The only “good” thing (it’s not really good, just less bad) about the situation is that it’s “only” bones in his wrist.
He may be able to avoid some of the power drop typically associated with HBP injuries to those areas.
High – The other good thing with both these injuries is they happened in June, and neither are season-ending.
Even as a Yankees fan this sucks. Mookie has always been a class act and this isn’t good for baseball. Baseball is better when Mookie is being Mookie. Hoping for a speedy recovery.
Kinda remind me of another Royal pitcher who hit Judge and injured him for a lengthy period of time. I think this was the year after he won ROY.
As a giants fan that despises the doyers, that sucks. It’s not good for the game when one of it’s best players is out(or really anyone for that matter)
Hope he isn’t hampered by it when he comes back, sometimes those things can linger for a while
yes it is. Parody IS GOOD FOR THE GAME. Unless youre a dodgers fan. Everything is zero sum.
bkbk
“Parody IS GOOD FOR THE GAME.”
Why do you believe that?
Seems to make sense that the big markets, the teams that have more fans, being good is good for the game. More people willing to spend more money to consume your produce is typically better than fewer people being willing to spend more money to consume y9our product.
Gotta love parity vs parody chats
I know what I said 😉
Yes, everyone loves a good laugh
Let us know when you hear one. 😉
“What’s the difference between a joke and a slider in the dirt”? Javier Baez can take a joke.”
Okay, good one!
How long before this teams buys a shortstop and another pitcher at the deadline. Which is why I can’t stand this team. They don’t have consequences of a normal team who spends alot and loses. they just keep spending and spending. shouldn’t be allowed.
what shouldn’t be allowed is your anger, your arrogance and your calling everyone who disagrees with you morons, asses and idiots. Grow up.
Yes, he’s one of he’s worst trolls I’ve read here in the last 7-9 years.
Pretty immature.
Those words dont mean what you think they do. His comment is literally just describing a defacto evening of how teams can spend. The only thing arrogant is ascribing some kind intention or emotion to his ideas.
Your whole comment is an ad hominem fallacy and his is just a point.
how do you buy players in a trade?
They’re not likely to buy another SS at all, but trade for one, so they’ll also be giving up prospects. Lots of teams make trades. I’m still not convinced they’ll make a trade. Rojas is a better defender at short and they have the depth to cover his loss short term. If they go on a losing streak without his bat, that might change but I don’t see them panicking and overpaying.
Why? Because it upsets your sensibilities? Teams address weaknesses on their roster in a way that works for them. Sorry, the Diamondbacks don’t have the financial resources to match the Dodgers, dollar for dollar. I don’t know how the Dodgers are going to “buy” a shortstop and whatever else they feel they will need at the deadline. It will cost them what it will cost each and every team which adds players in five weeks – prospects! It is likely the Dodgers will have to part with Daulton Rushing, Josue DePaula and more to add a shortstop. The Diamondbacks will have to pay a similar price if they add a third baseman or arms. The only question is how much it will cost in prospect capital.
Honestly, I don’t understand your vitriol. It wasn’t like the Dodgers were the only team bidding on Ohtani, Yamamoto or Teoscar. I remember reading that there were several teams (Giants, Jays, etc) who were offering the same money for both Ohtani and Yamamoto. One can’t fault the Dodgers for winning the bidding. Winning that bidding comes with risk. The Dodgers know that well with past swings and misses like Trevor Bauer, Jason Schmidt and Andruw Jones. Whining about teams which have the resources to take those risks, whether it be the Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees or Mets is a waste of effort. There are teams which are willing to take the risk of spending what it takes in their view to win and others who are less willing. That issue is with each team’s front office. If it doesn’t work out so be it. I would venture your issue isn’t with the spending but with how the Dodgers react to missteps like Bauer or losing players like Seager, Trea Turner, Scherzer. They don’t tank for or tear it down. They retool within the rules. I have said more than I intended, but maybe you should take a step back and realize that the haves are going to do all they’re allowed to do to get the ring. If it fails so be it, if it succeeds, more power to them. Getting twisted over a team which can spend is a waste.
Ouch. The wrist with all those small bones. He was having a great year. Hate to see a good year derailed like that.
Good news that he doesn’t need surgery.
Which means that as soon as the swelling goes down and he can have better imaging that he will have surgery.
Just going with what the article claims.
Dave Roberts does not have a good track record about being honest with these things.
You must know more than the Dodgers medical team
Speedy recovery Mr. Betts.
We’re all gonna miss watching you have fun.
would’ve been nice to see the next KC batter beaned in the chest but dave isn’t that kind of guy…what does he do again?
Wren
Why would that be nice? It would be stupid. Wanting to see it is stupid.
Assuming you mean Dave Roberts, the Dodgers’ manager, he, you know, manages the game and the players.
Here’s what he does
msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/dave-roberts-wanted-to-re…
Your response to that says a lot about you, and not a damn thing about Roberts.
he is such a joy to watch regardless of what tm you root for. heal up mookie! pitchers need to learn better command! atleast it happened in june and not september. he’ll be back before the playoffs
Been a Mookie fan since the class act of trading a bat for TJ Friedl’s first home run ball.
Hope he gets back on the field soon.
Heal up, Mookie. My favorite player in MLB.
With the dumpires expanding the strike zone this year, pitchers can throw more pitches out of the strike zone and still get called strikes. This easily increases the chance of inside pitches finding delicate body parts and doing their damage to the player and the sport. Stupid, stupid game.
Seriously, been following baseball since 1967 and I don’t think I’ve seen a season like this for injuries and we aren’t even halfway through.
That’s what I was thinking too. I have been following only sense 88 or so, but it does seem like something is just off this year. Assume it’s just random odds/luck, but we will need to see if it continues second half and next year.
I sure hate to see the best players injured and out of action (though of course it’s a harsh reality for any player, too). Good luck to Mr. Betts on a speedy and full recovery.
Going to be hard to replace that production on the ole fantasy team
Hate the dodgers, love mookie super bummed to not see him on the IL.
GOD IS PISSED. At the dodgers for some reason
No but seriously who forgot to refill Jobu’s rum in dodgers locker room?
Lol seriously..yer comparing the perennial loser indians teams to the dodgers ? They have a nice lead loads of pitching coming and mookie will be back by the time it matters ..relax
Jobu has spoken.
Who is Jobu?
Ignorant – You pulling our leg?
If not, this is Jobu ….

@Fever
2024 Boston Red Sox = 2024 Wild Card Contender
I think it’s happening.
Ignorant – Obviously I hope you’re right, but I’ve seen this movie before.
A year ago they swept the Yankees to – wait for it – improve their record to 37-35. Sound familiar?
They did nothing at the trade deadline and finished 78-84.
Let’s see how they respond in Toronto.
fun team to watch ..swept toronto
If you’re cheering for a guy getting hurt, you’re a pos.
I hate to see any player get hurt. I hate seeing marquee players who are also good people getting hurt even more.
Damn. Even if you don’t like the Dodgers you can’t be happy about this. Mookie is so good for the game. One of my all-time favorite players. This sucks.
After having lost Betts and Muncy an entire starting rotation plus Yamamoto, Graterol, Hurt and Frasso wouldn’t it be something if the Dodgers figured out a way to win the championship?! It’s not possible. Is It?
Of course it is possible. They can go out and make some trades here soon with some of their prospect crop and take on salary from other teams. They should be alright.
leftcoaster
Of course it’s possible
It’s just less likely than if those guys were are full strength
Uh oh sergio
I hope Bichette likes his new home in LA.
Nah, it’s not like the Dbacks, Pads and Giants are a threat. Betts will be back in a few weeks.
He fractured his hand. it will be 4-8 weeks.
Yeah, a few weeks
6-8 weeks. If everything goes well. They still don’t have clear imaging today because of the swelling, but they know it was a fracture. .
More like Sept.
@Brew88
I fractured my left thumb when I was 23 and it took 2-3 months to fully heal. He’ll probably be back in September at the earliest.
I know, it could be a long leave. But there’s also possibility it’s not so long. Machado’s hand fracture last year kept him out just two weeks. Will likely learn today what the diagnosis is.
Broken bones usually take 6-8 weeks to heal. How soon after that Betts can play the game depends on how much if at all this fracture impacts his range of movement and how long he has to play rehab assignments to get back into playing condition. We can’t do better than guess how long this will take, and probably even the Dodgers medical staff can’t be any more certain at this early stage.
The only positive of Betts being out (which there isn’t many-he’s pretty awesome), is that we don’t have to watch that irritating dance he does when he gets a hit. It’s like “Wow! Look at me! I got a hit. Now let me dance like an idiot.”
rwnc
That’s a Dodger team thing.
dodgerblue.com/freddie-freeman-new-dodgers-dance-c…
Mookie just has a bit more sway in the hips
Allow players to have a personality unique to themselves. Otherwise, you kill the game, even for old fans like me!
I will give the Dodgers Willy Adames for any two starting pitchers who: Are under age 28: major league currently; or top 5 prospects and ML ready; Have at least 2 more seasons of Eligibility from being free agents after this year!:
Breaking news. Dodgers have traded for the white sox Shortstop. THey have given up Daulten rushin
See when your stupid it shows. Petite and posada are not free agents you ass! Just cause their time was up doesn’t mean they are new free agents. They were there for years! Matsui was there 7 years already. so was arod! I literally said you can sign some free agents jackass. Go to all their free agent moves and tell me how it has worked for them since 2000. So they spent 15 billion since 2001 and got 1 chip. stop saying I said you can’t sign some free agents. They still had jeter, rivera, posada petite. The dodgers are not keeping anyone. They are adding and adding!
Dodgers have Kershaw, Buehler, Miller, Stone, Smith, Barnes, Outman, Lux, Pages, Graterol and others as homegrown talent. Added Yoshi like the Yankees did Matsui via international FA. The Yankees added Andy Petite as a FA after he left once. A-rod was a FA addition multiple times after they bought him via trade. Dodgers have added Betts via trade but had to take on Sheilds in that deal. Took risks on Muncy, Kikè, Teoscar, Turner, Chris Taylor, and a few others and developed them into decent players. Maybe bought Freddy Freeman when the Braves quit on the talks there, and bought Ohtani from the Jays. Is there anyone else they really played their big money over from? They also let guys such as Ryu, Maeda, Stripling, Turner, Turner, Scherzer, Urias, Bauer, Verdugo, Bellinger, White and a ton of others go to make some of those trades happen or make cap work over the years (and I know I am missing a few others) is like saying they haven’t lost some prospect capital in that time.
The Dodgers have lost as much in young players as they have gained by signing or trading for guys like the ones I previously mentioned. Whom else have they “bought”?
Graterol was acquired from the Twins in the Maeda trade.
Oh darn, what a shame
Benny
Adios
Lux has not been even close to ice cold. he’s starting to swing the stick nicely but gets lumped in w the other bottom of the order guys
Lux started off the season badly, showed some improvement last month, then backslid recently to more or less where he started.
Lux has hit .205/.244/.231/.475 in June. Can’t get much colder than that and still have a job.
Thank god they have Chris Taylor and kike Hernandez
Br – The thought of Kike back at SS just gave me shivers.
When it rains, it pours.
It’s Javy Baez time. Miguel Rojas will play SS. I don’t think the Dodgers should panick.
It’s difficult to consider MLB as much more than engineered barbarism anymore what with the predilection toward faster precision expected of pitchers. Tacking the ball would go a long way toward reducing injuries to both pitchers and batters. It’s distressing that the MLB Player’s Association doesn’t get behind serious changes like this. There has to be a figurative breaking point that satisfies both fans and players alike.
The answer is robo umpires. The percentage of called strikes that are out of the strike zone is staggering. If pitchers know they can get called strikes on every close pitch, they are pitching more and more to the corners of the strike zone. This increases the chance of hit batters. With robo umpires, pitchers will know they have to throw actual strikes. That will decrease the chance of hit batters.
Considering how many people watch football and hockey, it’s hard to view baseball as the “engineered barbarism” sport. It wasn’t that very long ago when batters came up to the plate wearing cloth caps, and no padding. And when they finally started wearing batting helmets it was only many years after when the ear flaps were added. Even then many players refused to wear them.
Football stands out as a brutal sport by design; it doesn’t need engineering to make it any more barbaric. Hockey has become a finesse sport, however. Clamping down on violence was the solution to its barbarism. Is there anything more exciting than well-executed plays in hockey that don’t involve violence? The absence of violence hasn’t hurt ticket sales. Baseball should try it.
Perhaps your use (misuse) of the word engineered is the underlying problem with your argument. Football is designed to be violent, meaning it is engineered to be so. Hockey is also a violent contact sport by design, which if you don’t agree with me, by all means let me know when the players stop wearing padding. Nothing in baseball is designed to be violent, which doesn’t mean a game played with a high velocity hard projectile isn’t inherently hazardous. Measures have been taken to make it less so, and nothing has been done to make it more so.
Problem is…the fancy lads are making too much money. The blue collar brick layers with five kids never miss a job because they have a bobo, or a Knick out of their finger nail. It’s time to flush the over paid wimps and bring up some replacements that want to play. There’s no crying in baseball. If these dudes had to work for a living like most of us, they’d be hungry.
Uh, what?
Bestone
Imagine being this guy
I mean, first, if a bricklayer breaks their hand or tears a UCL they should definitely get the day off.
Yeah maybe…but they won’t get paid, and definitely have to pay some medical guru to heal up the hand. Many would find a way to use their other hand. At least where I come from…..
Uh, what??
bestone
You’re making a good case against our modern labor practices
I think, personally, it would be better if we took steps to avoid workplace injuries and had universal healthcare than forcing injured bricklayers to use their other hand.
Bestone comes from the late 1800s
Nah, the late 1800s actually existed.
As much as i hated Mookie leaving Boston, i still follow him. This injury is a dam shame. Get well soon Mr. Betts.
That’s stinks. I hate that a future HOF’r is inactive.
About to be a Lux for DeJong trade.
Rough day for the dodgers
They’re the Dodgers. They’ll be okay.
Let me guess
This is bad for the game
Card
You shouldn’t have to guess
You should know that ANY work place injury is bad
The Dodgers should have spent their money on players who are not going to breakdown.
Yes, the Dodgers front office is filled with bozos who don’t know how to avoid the players who go on the IL with famously predictable bone fractures from hit by pitches.
Caveat emptor, and all that.
1-Losing YY & Betts sucks for the LAD, but more importantly, I have both of them on my Roto teams.
2-As a RS fan, it feels like Betts will come back sooner than expected.
3-Time for the LAD to consider Baez. he shouldn’t cost much in terms of $$$ or prospects.
Many a middling/lost season has followed coming back quickly from wrist injury.
But more importantly? This is why I hate fantasy baseball and what it’s done to the minds of many fans.
JB
“2-As a RS fan, it feels like Betts will come back sooner than expected.”
Makes not a shed of sense
Just imho, but I don’t remember him ever missing much time. I guess most fractures and breaks are 6-8 weeks, so we can discuss it at the trade deadline.
