Mookie Betts was hit on the left hand by a Dan Altavilla fastball today, causing Betts to drop to the ground in immediate pain and then leave the field. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times) after the game that Betts has a fractured bone in the hand and will be out of action “for some time,” though the former AL MVP won’t require surgery.
More will be known about Betts’ status and a potential recovery timeline in the coming days, but this is undoubtedly a huge blow for the Dodgers. As with any wrist- or hand-related injury, there is plenty of potential for lingering after-effects even after a player is officially cleared for action, given how any changes to grip or hand positioning on a bat can alter a swing. The first order of business for Betts and the Dodgers is just to manage this injury and the recovery as well as possible, though the concern won’t go away until Betts is both back on the field and displaying his usual superstar form at the plate.
Heading into today’s game, Betts was hitting .307/.407/.493 with 10 homers over a league-leading 327 plate appearances, adding 16 doubles and nine stolen bases (in 10 attempts) to those impressive numbers. In addition to that typically excellent offensive production, Betts has also been playing a key defensive role for the Dodgers as their everyday shortstop, a role Betts adopted during Spring Training after Gavin Lux was moved off the position. While defensive metrics have been mixed at best on Betts’ glovework, simply the fact that Betts was willing to change positions and at least passably handled the shortstop role just added to his importance to the L.A. roster.
The Dodgers were still expected to pursue middle infield help at the deadline, both because Lux hasn’t hit much, and to potentially hasten Betts’ move back to second base if a new everyday shortstop was obtained. Today’s developments probably make it even likelier that Los Angeles will look to add a shortstop regardless of how much time Betts misses, though it remains to be seen whether or not the Dodgers now look to make an acquisition sooner rather than later. The team will first want to access Betts’ health, of course, and teams with available infield depth might suddenly raise their asking prices if they perceive the Dodgers are in any way desperate.
In the short term, Roberts said that Miguel Vargas will be called back up from Triple-A to rejoin the infield mix. Miguel Rojas will get the bulk of regular shortstop duty, with Enrique Hernandez also factoring in at both shortstop and third base. Max Muncy is still sidelined with a lingering oblique injury and Roberts said today that Muncy’s recovery has been “even slower than expected,” so it is anyone’s guess as to when the third baseman might be able to help a suddenly-depleted Dodgers infield. Cavan Biggio was recently acquired from the Blue Jays to add to the depth mix, so Betts’ absence will open up more playing time for Biggio at second or third base.
Rojas has long been an excellent defender, and he has been surprisingly productive at the dish with a .278/.328/.444 slash line over 116 PA this season. His 122 wRC+ would be the second-best mark of his 11-year MLB career, though it is obviously a reach to expect Rojas to keep this up for a lengthy amount of time, given that he isn’t making much hard contact at the plate.
Even though the Dodgers lineup is full of big bats, losing Betts also underlines the club’s somewhat top-heavy nature. Betts, Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Teoscar Hernandez have all been raking and Muncy was hitting well pre-injury, but Lux, Enrique Hernandez, and Chris Taylor have all been ice cold, while James Outman was struggling so much that Los Angeles optioned the outfielder to Triple-A.
With a 44-29 record, the Dodgers have arguably built up enough of a cushion to withstand losing Betts for a bit of time, as there doesn’t appear to be any danger that Los Angeles would suddenly fall out of the playoff race. However, it can’t be ignored that the Dodgers are now without Betts, Muncy, and more than an entire rotation’s worth of starting pitchers, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Michael Grove joining the long list of injured hurlers earlier today. The Dodgers have been able to both withstand and even thrive despite heavy injuries in past seasons, yet if this missing personnel is enough to drop the Dodgers out of a first-round postseason bye, it will give the team an even more difficult path to a World Series title.

The Dodgers are so good and so deep they should take their time with Betts and bring him back slowly even after he’s cleared. They won’t be in a playoff race get him fully healthy for when it counts. They could use a shortstop though I agree with the article it wasn’t Betts’ natural position anyway he’s just good enough to do it adequately a testament to his skill

Thanks to baseball’s revenue sharing disparities, it’s so true in baseball. But I’m happy. I saw the Pirates win it in ‘79
Fever Pitch Guy
Lord – Have to disagree. To me when the biggest payroll in MLB wins the WS, it was bought. And yes that includes my 2018 Sox.
When teams like the 2003 Marlins win the WS with the 6th-lowest payroll in MLB, money had nothing to do with it.
LordD99
Disagreement is at the heart of all fun baseball discussions!
My point is the structure of MLB means that some teams are going to spend more money than others depending on where they are in their win cycle and the rules they’re forced to play under. Constant winning drives up the price of payrolls. I don’t believe the Oakland A’s are more virtuous for having a low payroll when they can spend more. The Texas Rangers won the World Series last year and went out and bought Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jon Gray, Jabob deGrom, even Adolis Garcia was a purchase. Yet you seem to be implying that because they started with a very low payroll then the free agent purchases somehow don’t count. If so, yes, we strongly disagree. (For the record, I have no issue at all with what the Rangers did and do. More teams should because they can.)
How did the Yankees get Derek Jeter? They sucked. It was an unintentional tank due to George’s mismanagement. They had a high draft pick. They got Jeter. They drafted Posada twice, once in the 40th rounds and then in the 20th rounds. Neither high, but they get credit for identifying and developing him. Pettitte was somewhere in the 20s too. Mariano Rivera? Yes, he was international (is that bad?), but he wasn’t even a prospect. They signed him internationally for I believe about $8,000. All teams do this. You can’t simply dismiss them because they didn’t go through the North American Amateur Draft. The Orioles, up until recently, wouldn’t spend any money on the scouting and drafting of international players. It was crazy. Are they more virtuous for that? Do they get some special credit for tanking and getting Rutchman? If not him, then they could have had Witt. Point is, drafting higher has HUGE financial advantages even if the payroll is not higher.
The Yankees kept their dynasty core they scouted and developed together. There’s nothing negative there. Smaller market teams don’t have the financial advantage teams like the Yankees and Red Sox have, but those smaller markets are given other advantages with draft picks. The Yankees despite a mediocre record last year, middle of the pack, are still pushed almost all the way to the bottom of the first round because they spent money and have a higher payroll.
So, yes, we disagree because you’re looking at straight dollars and not the structure around it. In the end, all teams purchase players under different rules depending on market size, record and, frankly, the desire to win.
Not a clever name
I agree, although I would like to see some sort of structure like the NBA has where the incumbent team has a negotiating advantage. Though the players union would never allow it. Not so much because it would make things more competitive but because I always enjoyed seeing stars like Posey, Cain, Gwynn and others who played an entire career with one team. I can accept guys like Mays who get traded away, or Crawford where the team is no longer interested in keeping them, but will hate seeing Trout in a Phillies or Yankees uniform.

The nfl has it right there’s a reason they are king (love baseball first) !!! I understand the union issues with baseball….it proves unions are a bad thing…. Fever Pitch Guy
Lord – I gave a detailed response on the Yankees spending to the Dbacks guy, but apparently his post got wiped out therefore I can’t see my response anymore.
So in short, I have always been a supporter of the Larry Bird Rule which is no penalties for extending homegrown talent.
Agree with you on Oakland and other teams, including mine, who prioritize profit over winning. Exception would be situations such as Tampa where winning doesn’t translate to increased revenue.
I absolutely was not implying anything about the Rangers, I didn’t even bring them up. Now I’m wondering if I was the person you intended to respond to?
Myself and many people I know, including many Sox fans, always had respect for the 1996 Yankees because you’re right – they didn’t buy that title. They didn’t deserve it because of the Maier incident, but that was on the umpires not the Yankees.
Fact is starting in 1999 the Yankees had by far the biggest payroll in MLB every year as I wrote earlier. That wasn’t due to the cost of retaining their homegrown players, it was due to free agents and trading for expensive players that other teams couldn’t afford.
You’re not trying to imply that money had nothing to do with guys like Cone, ARod, Stanton, and Clemens getting traded to the Yankees …. are you?
And when Yankees players become free agents and then re-sign with the Yankees, they are still free agent signings that were signed by the Yankees because they outbid all other teams. ARod and others didn’t give discounts to the Yankees just because they had played with them before.
To clarify, I don’t begrudge the Yankees or any other team for buying championships. They aren’t breaking any rules. But the fact MLB is the only major team sport to not have a hard salary cap definitely gives a huge advantage to high revenue teams such as the Dodgers and Yankees.
It’s like playing a game of Monopoly when one player always starts out with more money than all the other players, it cheapens their victories.
So yes, agree to disagree :O)
LordD99
I was responding in general to a few notes. Under your view, the Red Sox have bought all their championships this century, starting with free agents Ortiz and Ramírez, a one-two punch who formed the heart of the order. To be clear, I don’t view that as a negative. They built great team(s). What’s strange is Henry seems to have stopped trying. (Congrats, though, on the weekend series win).
We disagree on the parameters, and nothing said here will change that. Perhaps sometime we’ll be in the same town and can hash it out over beers. Feel free to invite Whyhaazee! : -)

Yankee Clipper
I {think} what TakerDBacks is saying is that there is no direct correlation between spending and winning rings. Therefore, he’s emphasizing the point that rarely (if ever) does spending tons of money, even on the game’s best players, work because it’s more about consistency of play, depth, and roster health.
At least that’s how I interpreted it; but I could be wrong.

Doesn’t it make sense that the best players are the best paid? And that the team with the best players wins the championship?
=========================
That’s directionally correct. Two factors make it a bit less linear.
1-The 6-year control period makes it possible for a $125M team to have roughly the same talent level as a $250M team. it won’t be 100%, but teams like BA get three years of good drafts and wind up paying 5-6 3-WAR+ guys minimum wage narrows the gap.
2-And, of course, the playoffs. The more expensive teams will usually out-perform over 162 games, but the playoffs are still a crap shoot.
Yankee Clipper
Steve, your question is *not* a good one and here’s why:
1 – I wasn’t making that assertion, I was writing how I interpreted TakerDBacks statement,
2 – just because they spent a lot in 2009 doesn’t mean that’s why they won. Granted, it’s a reasonable assertion, but it could’ve just as well have been the the other reasons (health, play, and depth).
3 – If it was solely base on in money, as you assert LiberalSteve, then why was that the *only year* they won?
4 – If money spent was responsible for winning, care to explain the Mets abysmal finish? On that note, care to explain the Yankees’ abysmal finish and lack of championship wins over the past 14 years?
You’ve provided no evidence, only a presumed correlation due to an after-the-fact conclusion.
Liberalsteve
Not sure what you are arguing. He said a team hasn’t bought a championship. I was just using his definition. Don’t pull the stats and logic stuff on me anyways. I could pawn you like nobody’s business anyways

“I could pawn you like nobody’s business anyways.”
What does that even mean ANYWAY? That you can win a pi$$ing contest?
CardsFan57
Spending may not guarantee winning but it certainly improves the odds. The secret is spending wisely.
Yankee Clipper
CardsFan57: Yes, I agree that it can certainly improve an individual team’s odds. I think that’s only to a point. I believe the more important factor, as you stated as well, is how the money is spent and how a team is assembled (in other words, is it a bunch of individual stars Or is it a cohesive team?)
CardsFan57
It takes a combination of drafting and developing talent then supplementing it with the right free agents to win consistently. Don’t underestimate the value of money spent on identifying and developing talent. That money is probably more important than the free agent money. That’s another advantage the wealthy teams should have if they are being managed well. It also doesn’t count against the CBT.
VegasMoved
lmao what does this even mean?
“If the Dodgers are so rich why did Mookie Betts break his hand????” Like, what?

Now that the O’s youngsters are up, experienced, and competing, I see the Brewers as the next potential power in MLB. They built the team up-the-middle, their young players are well coached and can play.
Don’t think they’re serious WS contenders for 2 more years. Whereas Adames is 28 and will be peaking the next 3-4 years, he’s going to want big bucks this offseason, Doubt the Brewers can afford that.

Comparing hardworking ubertalented superstars Betts and Acuna jr to frivolous toys isn’t what a baseball fan would do.

Even DBacks fans can say this isn’t good; when the best players are out, it’s bad for the game. The only “good” thing (it’s not really good, just less bad) about the situation is that it’s “only” bones in his wrist.
He may be able to avoid some of the power drop typically associated with HBP injuries to those areas.
Fever Pitch Guy
High – The other good thing with both these injuries is they happened in June, and neither are season-ending.

Even as a Yankees fan this sucks. Mookie has always been a class act and this isn’t good for baseball. Baseball is better when Mookie is being Mookie. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

Kinda remind me of another Royal pitcher who hit Judge and injured him for a lengthy period of time. I think this was the year after he won ROY.

As a giants fan that despises the doyers, that sucks. It’s not good for the game when one of it’s best players is out(or really anyone for that matter)
Hope he isn’t hampered by it when he comes back, sometimes those things can linger for a while

“Parody IS GOOD FOR THE GAME.”
Why do you believe that?
Seems to make sense that the big markets, the teams that have more fans, being good is good for the game. More people willing to spend more money to consume your produce is typically better than fewer people being willing to spend more money to consume y9our product.

How long before this teams buys a shortstop and another pitcher at the deadline. Which is why I can’t stand this team. They don’t have consequences of a normal team who spends alot and loses. they just keep spending and spending. shouldn’t be allowed.

Those words dont mean what you think they do. His comment is literally just describing a defacto evening of how teams can spend. The only thing arrogant is ascribing some kind intention or emotion to his ideas.
Your whole comment is an ad hominem fallacy and his is just a point.
Suitcase Simpson
how do you buy players in a trade?
neoncactus
They’re not likely to buy another SS at all, but trade for one, so they’ll also be giving up prospects. Lots of teams make trades. I’m still not convinced they’ll make a trade. Rojas is a better defender at short and they have the depth to cover his loss short term. If they go on a losing streak without his bat, that might change but I don’t see them panicking and overpaying.
s.drinkwater
Why? Because it upsets your sensibilities? Teams address weaknesses on their roster in a way that works for them. Sorry, the Diamondbacks don’t have the financial resources to match the Dodgers, dollar for dollar. I don’t know how the Dodgers are going to “buy” a shortstop and whatever else they feel they will need at the deadline. It will cost them what it will cost each and every team which adds players in five weeks – prospects! It is likely the Dodgers will have to part with Daulton Rushing, Josue DePaula and more to add a shortstop. The Diamondbacks will have to pay a similar price if they add a third baseman or arms. The only question is how much it will cost in prospect capital.
Honestly, I don’t understand your vitriol. It wasn’t like the Dodgers were the only team bidding on Ohtani, Yamamoto or Teoscar. I remember reading that there were several teams (Giants, Jays, etc) who were offering the same money for both Ohtani and Yamamoto. One can’t fault the Dodgers for winning the bidding. Winning that bidding comes with risk. The Dodgers know that well with past swings and misses like Trevor Bauer, Jason Schmidt and Andruw Jones. Whining about teams which have the resources to take those risks, whether it be the Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees or Mets is a waste of effort. There are teams which are willing to take the risk of spending what it takes in their view to win and others who are less willing. That issue is with each team’s front office. If it doesn’t work out so be it. I would venture your issue isn’t with the spending but with how the Dodgers react to missteps like Bauer or losing players like Seager, Trea Turner, Scherzer. They don’t tank for or tear it down. They retool within the rules. I have said more than I intended, but maybe you should take a step back and realize that the haves are going to do all they’re allowed to do to get the ring. If it fails so be it, if it succeeds, more power to them. Getting twisted over a team which can spend is a waste.

With the dumpires expanding the strike zone this year, pitchers can throw more pitches out of the strike zone and still get called strikes. This easily increases the chance of inside pitches finding delicate body parts and doing their damage to the player and the sport. Stupid, stupid game.

Seriously, been following baseball since 1967 and I don’t think I’ve seen a season like this for injuries and we aren’t even halfway through.
runningwithnailclippers
That’s what I was thinking too. I have been following only sense 88 or so, but it does seem like something is just off this year. Assume it’s just random odds/luck, but we will need to see if it continues second half and next year.

@Brew88
I fractured my left thumb when I was 23 and it took 2-3 months to fully heal. He’ll probably be back in September at the earliest.
Brew88
I know, it could be a long leave. But there’s also possibility it’s not so long. Machado’s hand fracture last year kept him out just two weeks. Will likely learn today what the diagnosis is.
BlueSkies_LA
Broken bones usually take 6-8 weeks to heal. How soon after that Betts can play the game depends on how much if at all this fracture impacts his range of movement and how long he has to play rehab assignments to get back into playing condition. We can’t do better than guess how long this will take, and probably even the Dodgers medical staff can’t be any more certain at this early stage.
runningwithnailclippers
The only positive of Betts being out (which there isn’t many-he’s pretty awesome), is that we don’t have to watch that irritating dance he does when he gets a hit. It’s like “Wow! Look at me! I got a hit. Now let me dance like an idiot.”

See when your stupid it shows. Petite and posada are not free agents you ass! Just cause their time was up doesn’t mean they are new free agents. They were there for years! Matsui was there 7 years already. so was arod! I literally said you can sign some free agents jackass. Go to all their free agent moves and tell me how it has worked for them since 2000. So they spent 15 billion since 2001 and got 1 chip. stop saying I said you can’t sign some free agents. They still had jeter, rivera, posada petite. The dodgers are not keeping anyone. They are adding and adding!
wreckage
Dodgers have Kershaw, Buehler, Miller, Stone, Smith, Barnes, Outman, Lux, Pages, Graterol and others as homegrown talent. Added Yoshi like the Yankees did Matsui via international FA. The Yankees added Andy Petite as a FA after he left once. A-rod was a FA addition multiple times after they bought him via trade. Dodgers have added Betts via trade but had to take on Sheilds in that deal. Took risks on Muncy, Kikè, Teoscar, Turner, Chris Taylor, and a few others and developed them into decent players. Maybe bought Freddy Freeman when the Braves quit on the talks there, and bought Ohtani from the Jays. Is there anyone else they really played their big money over from? They also let guys such as Ryu, Maeda, Stripling, Turner, Turner, Scherzer, Urias, Bauer, Verdugo, Bellinger, White and a ton of others go to make some of those trades happen or make cap work over the years (and I know I am missing a few others) is like saying they haven’t lost some prospect capital in that time.
The Dodgers have lost as much in young players as they have gained by signing or trading for guys like the ones I previously mentioned. Whom else have they “bought”?

It’s difficult to consider MLB as much more than engineered barbarism anymore what with the predilection toward faster precision expected of pitchers. Tacking the ball would go a long way toward reducing injuries to both pitchers and batters. It’s distressing that the MLB Player’s Association doesn’t get behind serious changes like this. There has to be a figurative breaking point that satisfies both fans and players alike.
whyhayzee
The answer is robo umpires. The percentage of called strikes that are out of the strike zone is staggering. If pitchers know they can get called strikes on every close pitch, they are pitching more and more to the corners of the strike zone. This increases the chance of hit batters. With robo umpires, pitchers will know they have to throw actual strikes. That will decrease the chance of hit batters.
BlueSkies_LA
Considering how many people watch football and hockey, it’s hard to view baseball as the “engineered barbarism” sport. It wasn’t that very long ago when batters came up to the plate wearing cloth caps, and no padding. And when they finally started wearing batting helmets it was only many years after when the ear flaps were added. Even then many players refused to wear them.
nosake
Football stands out as a brutal sport by design; it doesn’t need engineering to make it any more barbaric. Hockey has become a finesse sport, however. Clamping down on violence was the solution to its barbarism. Is there anything more exciting than well-executed plays in hockey that don’t involve violence? The absence of violence hasn’t hurt ticket sales. Baseball should try it.
BlueSkies_LA
Perhaps your use (misuse) of the word engineered is the underlying problem with your argument. Football is designed to be violent, meaning it is engineered to be so. Hockey is also a violent contact sport by design, which if you don’t agree with me, by all means let me know when the players stop wearing padding. Nothing in baseball is designed to be violent, which doesn’t mean a game played with a high velocity hard projectile isn’t inherently hazardous. Measures have been taken to make it less so, and nothing has been done to make it more so.

Problem is…the fancy lads are making too much money. The blue collar brick layers with five kids never miss a job because they have a bobo, or a Knick out of their finger nail. It’s time to flush the over paid wimps and bring up some replacements that want to play. There’s no crying in baseball. If these dudes had to work for a living like most of us, they’d be hungry.
