The Mariners announced that right-hander Chris Devenski has been sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. There was no previous indication he had been removed from their 40-man roster but they evidently passed him through waivers in recent days. Their 40-man roster count drops to 39.
Devenski, 33, was signed by the Mariners at the start of July after being released by the Rays. Though he is a veteran with enough service time to decline an optional assignment, he apparently consented as he has been with Triple-A Tacoma for the past few weeks. He made six appearances there and allowed two earned runs.
The M’s presumably have other uses in mind for that roster spot, so they bumped Devenski off. They have already been aggressive in upgrading their offense and bullpen, having acquired Randy Arozarena, Justin Turner and Yimi García in recent days. They’ve been connected in rumors to guys like Tanner Scott and Yandy Díaz, so perhaps more roster shake-up is forthcoming.
As for Devenski, he has more than enough service time to reject this outright and elect free agency, though it’s not yet clear if he’s chosen to do so. Heading to the open market would make some sense, since plenty of clubs will have roster openings after the musical chairs of the deadline plays out.
He was once quite a dominant reliever with the Astros, though he’s a few years removed that performance now. Over 2016 and 2017, he had a 2.35 earned run average in 189 innings for Houston. He struck out 28.2% of batters faced and only gave out walks at a 6.4% clip. Injuries in the coming years, including Tommy John surgery, seemed to hamper his results. His ERA was a combined 4.56 in 2018 and 2019 then a ghastly 9.47 for the 2020-22 seasons.
He then had a pretty unimpressive start to his 2023 season, with a 5.08 ERA with the Angels. But that season finished strong as he had a 2.08 in nine appearances for the Rays. That prompted Tampa to re-sign him but he then had a 6.75 ERA this year, leading to his release and then his deal with the Mariners.
Didn’t even know he was in the system
Who?
Making room for Vladdy 😛
Sr.?
Could still probably outhit half the team
life could be dream
Angel legend
Great…. drum roll @MLBTR. Down to 39 on the 40 man so they are signing…
No way… this means that the mariners are signing… Trevor Bauer!!!!!
Is it just me or have there been less sign Bauer trolls I wonder if they got banned
Just Jerry getting everyone’s hopes up just to say he really really tried hard but couldn’t get anything done
U do know he traded for Arozarena right? One team can’t collect all the top trade targets. At least we picked up one for a change.
My guess is a lefty reliever. Tanner Scott. Dark horse guess is that someone on the 60-day IL is being activated.
There shouldn’t be a trade deadline to begin with. Rosters should freeze on opening day holding owners, GMs, and POBOs accountable for the work (or lack of work) they did in the offseason. Save the mulligans for golf.
This rah rah for Jerry is almost ridiculous. He ain’t done squat
He’s done way more than Jack Z and the other GMs before him
Yes yes he has
I think it’s time for Emerson Hancock to go. He’s are biggest chip, and I know he had a couple spots starts. I just was not impressed. I know he’s young I know he’s still got time to season. I just wasn’t impressed, maybe it was the arm angle. But I just don’t think he’s going to cut it, I think he’s going to turn out to be a Jestus Sheffield. I think they need to put them in a package for another bat. A good bat, a 39-year-old Justin Turner. With a 240 average ain’t going to cut it, Randy with his 240 average ain’t going to cut it. We need a hitter that has a history of hitting somebody with at least a 275 or higher batting average. Someone like an Edgar Martinez. Who can make a real impact!!!
Because those batters are readily available…smh
Emerson is a hard one..never the same once he was injured. Kind of a shame to be honest.
I agree he’ll middle around the league as a reliever have a few. Good years. Hey, it’s probably a cooler job then all of us have!!:)-
Jerry is just trying to be cheap again, and feel the needs with useless remains. This is Justin Turner’s last year almost guaranteed. Hitters always die in Seattle. Look at Richie Saxson. We have a great system that develops pitchers. We can’t develop hitters to save our lives. Look at Evan White, Dustin Ackley All these guys were supposed to be godsends. Save our franchise!!! Jerry don’t know what the f*** he’s doing. And then you got to catcher for a manager. Name one good manager, that was a catcher. And don’t say Mike Sosa cuz he had the angels dynasty with him he had Tim salmon Garrett Anderson just to name a few.
Joe Torre? Bruce Bochy? Yogi Berra? Any of those names ring a bell?
Thank you
It should be obvious that this was to clear a 40-man roster spot for Turner. Assuming he reports today, they’ll likely option Locklear.
But hopefully there is more to come for Seattle.
If the Mariners do nothing else at the deadline the Yankees and the Orioles have had a better deadline than the Ms and they were already better than them before the deadline so we need to get one more bat and another reliever how about Diaz and Fairbanks and then we’re done
Cals contribution to the staff is frickin common sense. He calls a GD great game. That’s not the problem. We can’t win anything major scoring 2 runs a game my friend. Our pitching is top 3 in MLB. Our offense is horrific
If anything I got this convo going…
I mean sure but the convo is just multiple people telling you the same thing and you not listening. Or some crazy takes you have that make little sense.
If you think Cal’s value as a catcher is low because he bats .200 but leads the team in HRs, clutch and commanding one of the best pitching staffs in years, I legit don’t know what to say.
I would rather have signed Cal to a long term contract than Julio when we did. Julio looked great at the time but now looks a bit like it can really bite us in the butt. He’s got a long time to turn it around but he is an anticlutch player. I can’t tell you the amount of times he strikes out in runners on game tying or winning situations. If someone has the ability, show his BA in the 9th inning, it will be bad, his OBP comes from full count walks in the 9th.
