Mets Select Eric Orze’s Contract

By Mark Polishuk | July 6, 2024 at 9:53am CDT

The Mets announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Eric Orze from Triple-A Syracuse.  Fellow righty Ty Adcock has been optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move.

Adcock was one of three relievers who saw action in the Mets’ 14-2 loss to the Pirates last night, and Adcock had a particularly rough night in getting charged with six runs over 1 2/3 innings of work.  Today’s transaction brings a fresh arm into New York’s bullpen, and it also puts the 26-year-old Orze in position to make his Major League debut.

A fifth-round pick for the Mets in the pandemic-shortened 2020 draft, Orze had quite a journey just to start his pro career, overcoming both testicular cancer and skin cancer during his days at the University of New Orleans.  He quickly rose up the minor league ladder to Triple-A by the end of the 2021 season, but has since remained at the top affiliate over parts of four seasons now, posting a 4.64 ERA over 159 total frames with Syracuse.

Home runs and walks have been Orze’s biggest issues, as he has a 1.4 HR/9 and 12.28% walk rate over his Triple-A career.  This season in particular, Orze has a 1.64 HR/9 and 13.3% walk rate, yet he has continued to miss bats in impressive fashion.  His 33.9% strikeout rate is his best yet over his three full seasons in Syracuse, and he has a 31.72K% as a whole in Triple-A.

It’s possible Orze’s selection might result in just a proverbial cup of coffee in the majors, yet with the Mets looking to fill holes in an injury-riddled bullpen, there’s certainly some opportunity for Orze to gain more time on the active roster if he pitches well.  He’ll join a wide array of right-handers in a Mets bullpen that features only one healthy left-handed arm in Jake Diekman.

These past three games have shown the Mets true colors. Time for them to have that talk and sell.

I’ve been trying to have that talk all along. A playoff berth means nothing if you don’t have a rotation that can win more than one series. Let alone how erratic the pen has been lately.

Curious move. Orze has been his usual mixed bag in AAA. Moreover, Diaz is supposed to return today. Now someone else has to be sent down or DFA’d. Nunez and Garrett are the only ones with options, an they’ve generally been two of the Mets’ best relievers this year (though Garrett has struggled lately in the later inning, higher leverage situations since Diaz has been out)

It’s what it is: a short term move for a fresh arm and it gives Orze a memory most fans only dream of. He actually puts on a MLB uniform in a MLB clubhouse. Hopefully he gets into a game before he’s sent packing for yet another memory.

And he’s an awesome story… two-time cancer survivor. He deserves this.

They sent Ty Adcock down. That’s the move. They don’t need to do anything when Diaz comes back because they weren’t allowed to replace him. You run a man down if you have a pitcher suspended for a foreign substance.

Nobody besides Adcock has to be DFAed — the rule is that NYM had to retain Diaz on the roster throughout the suspension, but couldn’t play him.

What a story for Eric Orze! Overcoming cancer twice and now getting the chance to make his MLB debut is nothing short of inspirational. It’s clear that the Mets need fresh arms in their bullpen, and Orze’s impressive strikeout rate could be a real asset. However, his high HR/9 and walk rate in Triple-A are concerning. If he can control those issues, he might just stick around longer than a cup of coffee. Here’s hoping he makes the most of this opportunity and helps solidify the Mets’ bullpen.

Old York, it would be nice but the story is already written. His unreal journey to get to the majors. Only the final chapter(s) need to be written.

He can’t be worse than Diekman who loves the combo of walking that first guy and making sure he scores.

This is Stearns team and coaching staff. People need to stop praising what he’s done, a multitude of mishaps and mistakes and demand he FIX the damn mess !!

Trade for a LHRP prefer Matt Moore over Smyly. Use Butto, Megill and maybe Lucchesi in bullpen if roster spot available. Trade Quintana, Sevy Keep Manaea unless really good offer
    Shop Diaz also
One last offer to Alonso. 5 years @ 24M per year plus incentives. 6th year option. Use as DH more as he gets older
