Orioles GM Mike Elias spoke to reporters prior to this afternoon’s game against the Yankees and touched on a number of topics, including the club’s needs and goals ahead of the trade deadline as well as the status of two of the club’s key, upper-level prospects: infielders Jackson Holliday and Coby Mayo. As noted by Roch Kubatko of MASN, Elias suggested to reporters that both Holliday and Mayo figure to factor into the club’s plans as “big contributors” in the second half this year.
Holliday, of course, is the consensus top prospect in the entire sport and got a brief cup of coffee at the big league level earlier this year. The 20-year-old looked overmatched in the majors at the time, slashing just .059/.111/.059 in 36 trips to the plate across ten games. He then returned to the Triple-A level and hit .252/.418/.429 over his next 40 games. That’s a solid overall slash line but a far cry from what Holliday had done in the past, especially looking at his production in early June, when he hit just .212 with a 26.7% strikeout rate and a .394 slugging percentage in ten games before being placed on the minor league IL due to what the club referred to at the time as a “barking” shoulder.
The young phenom returned to action after two weeks on the shelf and has looked more like himself at the plate, slashing a solid .250/.464/.425 in 12 games since returning. He’s been limited to appearances at DH since returning, but that restriction figures to come off soon as Elias told reporters (including Rich Dubroff of Baltimore Baseball) this afternoon that Holliday will resume playing the field after the All-Star break. That should leave Holliday in line to take over a regular role at second base for the Orioles at some point in the second half.
Baltimore has been relying on a combination of Ramon Urias and Jorge Mateo to fill out the infield mix, with Jordan Westburg playing second base on days Urias is in the lineup and third base on days Mateo is in the lineup. Holliday’s arrival would likely open the door for Westburg to settle in at the hot corner on a more permanent basis while shifting both Urias and Mateo into bench roles. Of course, that infield picture figures to get complicated further by the introduction of Mayo, who Elias spoke of glowingly in conversation with reporters (including MLB.com’s Jake Rill) this afternoon.
“He is in an exceptionally good spot. We talk about him all the time,” Elias said of Mayo, according to Rill. “He’s very close. He’s going to help us this year. It’s just going to be about the right moment and the right opportunity and the right runway for something like that.“
Mayo’s readiness for a new challenge is all but undeniable at this point. The 22-year-old infielder posted a 127 wRC+ in 62 games at the Triple-A level last season and has followed it up with even stronger numbers this year. In 284 trips to the plate at Triple-A this season, Mayo has slashed an incredible .297/.380/.606 with a wRC+ of 147. While his 24.6% strikeout rate is perhaps a smidgen higher than is ideal, he more than makes up for the swing-and-miss with a 10.4% walk rate and a phenomenal 19 homers in just 63 games.
Talented as the slugger is, however, his roster fit in Baltimore is a difficult one to sort out. Mayo’s native position is third base, and that’s where he’s received almost all of his reps throughout the minors. With that being said, his defense has drawn mixed reviews and with Westburg likely to lock down the hot corner on an everyday basis upon Holliday’s ascension to the majors, that would leave Mayo on the outside looking in when it comes to reps at his natural position. Mayo has also received occasional time at first base, however, and it’s fairly easy to imagine him factoring in to the club’s first base/DH mix. Even that part of the roster is overcrowded, however, as Ryan Mountcastle and Ryan O’Hearn are currently splitting time there while Adley Rutschman also spends time at DH when not behind the plate and the club’s five outfield bats- Austin Hays, Anthony Santander, Colton Cowser, Cedric Mullins, and Heston Kjerstad– vie for what’s left of the playing time available at DH when not patrolling the grass.
The Orioles’ overflow of positional talent could, of course, be lessened somewhat by trades in the run-up to the deadline on July 30. Elias told reporters (including Dubroff) that while the front office is largely focused on the draft, which will run from tomorrow until Tuesday, the club will turn its attention toward the upcoming deadline afterwards and will have the flexibility to add payroll as they pursue additions. Kubatko adds that while Elias did suggest that payroll could increase under the club’s new ownership group, that doesn’t mean it’s “definitely” going to happen this summer and that the front office plans to be “disciplined” in their spending going forward, even as the purse strings loosen relative to where payroll had been under the Angelos family. Of course, even just reaching the vicinity of peak payroll under the Angelos family, which Cot’s Baseball Contracts lists as just under $165MM back in 2017, would offer the Orioles plenty of room to work with this summer and headed into the offseason.
In terms of specific needs, Elias acknowledged (as relayed by Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun) that adding a starting pitcher with multiple years of team control would be a “big bonus” for the club as they stare down an offseason where they’ll need to fill out an Opening Day rotation where only Grayson Rodriguez, rookie Cade Povich, and struggling righty Dean Kremer can be reliably penciled in thanks to the pending free agencies of John Means and Corbin Burnes as well as surgeries underwent by Means, Kyle Bradish, and Tyler Wells that figure to sideline them into 2025. Attractive as the addition of a controllable arm would be, however, Weyrich goes on to note that Elias made clear the club will be “approaching this deadline with 2024 front and center.”
A look at MLBTR’s Top 50 Trade Candidates for the summer will reveal a list littered with potential options that feature multiple years of control, ranging from breakout White Sox star Garrett Crochet and veteran righty Erick Fedde, to Rockies hurlers Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber, and even Rays starters Zach Eflin and Zack Littell. While an intradivision trade with Tampa seems somewhat unlikely, the Orioles certainly have the farm system to acquire virtually any player they set their sights on, even without parting ways with Holliday or Mayo.
That said, it’s certainly feasible that the club could look to acquire shorter-term pitching options as well. Right-hander Jack Flaherty is the top rental pitcher on the market this summer and seems like a less than ideal fit after he struggled to a 6.75 ERA down the stretch with Baltimore last year, but hurlers like Frankie Montas, Michael Lorenzen, and Trevor Williams could also be available this summer as pure rentals depending on the competitiveness of their respective clubs in the run-up to the deadline. It would also hardly be a surprise to see the Orioles attempt to beef up a bullpen mix that recently lost left-hander Danny Coulombe to surgery that will keep him out of action until at least September.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
The Orioles could have signed Jack Flaherty to a one year pillow contract deal
They turned up their nose and now the Orioles have a pitching issue
Also foe whatever reason Trevor Bauer did his time for whatever he did and yet there is zero pathway back to the Majors
I don’t think that is right Smh

If that’s your take then Forgiveness is between Bauer and God but forgiveness has nothing to do with employment at the MLB level.

Employers have a right to hire who they want and not have to deal with a potential problem employee. That is true in all aspects of life.
acell10
Yes that was my point
ClevelandSteelEngines
Baseball has shown that it doesn’t forgive. It truly embodies the cruelty of consumerism the secularized America has become. The forgiveness wouldn’t be for Bauer, it’s for us.
SewaldSwansonSwoon
Stupid take. Bauer is trash and would poison the O’s young clubhouse.
Flaherty was garbage for the O’s last year. Suggesting they “turned up their nose” is asinine. No reason to give him a dime after October 2023.
Now Gibby, Gibby could have been a realistic re-sign.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
It is not Garbage
What is garbage is Elias starting this Dumpster fire
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Calling what the O’s have a ‘dumpster fire’ is just wrong. Blaming it on Elias is worse. If not for injuries, they’d have had a good playoff rotation. They could have used another ToR starter, but so could most contenders.
Now they need a bit more, but if they’re dead set on keeping their top prospects, they’ll be limited to guys like Fedde or rentals. Solid pitchers, but not stars.
Sideline Redwine
lol “dumpster fire”. My goodness, talk about a lack of perspective.
Hey, Rays fan here–I’d love your “dumpster fire”!
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Hahahaha Well the Dumpster Fire is not for sale
Tigers3232
@Lefty Are you even certain that the O’s did not reach out to Flaherty and his agent? I’d say they likely did, as most teams likely kicked the tires on nearly all free agents.
Could very well be he just opted for Detroit due to spacious home park and a weaker hitting division. Flaherty is playing to prove himself and get a multi year deal this season. I’m sure he wouldn’t have minded playing for a contender, but on a one year deal he clearly had to look out for his future first.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Honestly I don’t know….but there didn’t seem to be any interest in doing anything…at least from my perspective

Unfortunately for Bauer if it was the rough sex and the rough sex *only*, then maybe he could get a second chance. Unfortunately he already had a reputation around the league as being generally unlikable and then of course there was the college girl in Houston he was cyber bullying. Bauer is his own worst enemy

Tigers3232
@Rsox The accusation that Bauer’s recent situation stems from was actual his 3rd chance. There were 2 women in Ohio a few yrs prior who sought PPOs and accused him of non consensual s@#. They did not seek media attention or file civil suits, it just quietly wound down til his most recent 2 incidents surfaced.
So any notion that it was one simple mishap by Bauer is simply false. And as for all the accusations I believe the 3rd one he was duped by a chick trying to monetize. The first 2 however seem a bit more sketchy on his part. As for the 4th chick I believe in ARI, haven’t even read into nor do I care to. After the first 2 incidents Bauer should ve exercised alot more caution. He’s a publicly recognized individual who represents a franchise, league, sport, business, etc. He is also worth quite a bit of money, after the 3rd transgression he sealed his own fate. You ever heard “3 strikes you re out”?? The irony is Bauer now truly appears to be out.

Bauer has his off the field baggage, on top of being a known clubhouse cancer. It’s not shocking at all to see no teams being interested in him. At the end of the day the moderate upgrade he is over most teams pitching doesn’t outweigh the negative consequences signing him would bring.

Off topic, but can MLB figure out how to promote the Futures Game? One suggestion: How about not scheduling the game against MLB games.? Was looking forward to watching it, then realized the Yankees-Orioles game was on opposite it. Come on.
This one belongs to the Reds
Agreed. They do a poor job of promoting the up and coming stars of the game. This is their showcase.
The same held true of the preseason one too. Production quality was awful as well.
Rsox
To be fair, they do a poor job promoting stars not named Judge or Ohtani also…
RobM
That preseason showcase was really poorly done. I liked the idea. Hopefully they improve it for next year.

Nobody’s done a better job of scouting drafting developing prospects than the O’s
Ton of minor leaguers ready to emerge in the majors.
Holliday, mayo, norby, stowers, basallo
Well done baltimore
Poolhalljunkies
Well sure with all those top picks the O’s didnt miss…but someone could argue a team like the dodgers have done a way better job..they not only have a top 10 system in all mlb what seems like every year..they do it while actually winning nearly 100 games a year and never having any of these top picks or massive intl signing pools that go with losing.
Johnny utah
@junkie
you have to factor in the prospects that recently graduated for baltimore since 2023, gunnar + kjerstad who are both potential superstars. LAD farm is good but cubs, tigers, mets, twins, mariners, rays, O’s are ahead in my opinion. also dodgers might win 100 games every single year but they’ve got half a championship to show for it since the 80s. they cant seem to put it all together in the playoffs. top picks doesnt mean anything. andrew vaughn, casey mize, joey bart, henry davis, jack leiter, torkelson, were all recent “top picks” and were either demoted back to the minors or cut from their team or struggling in the majors. basallo was never a big minor league name. gunnar wasnt a 1st round choice and might be the most promising young player in the entire game. elly delacruz is not on the O’s but another young player who was not a big prospect by any means. some tms just do better at scouting/developing. i’m not an O’s fan but i recognize the amazing job they’ve done building a team mostly from within
Poolhalljunkies
You could have stopped at “top picks dont mean anything” ..my point was the dodgers did the same thing as the O’s while winning games..and having lesser picks.. i was also talking every year not just 2024…btw..Os havnt won since 1983..so lets not make fun of dodgers titles..im a red sox fans if titles are what matter they are kings of this century right?
ACC
Sure the Orioles had high picks and they have picked well…Adley, Holiday, Kjerstad, Cowser.(1,1,2, and 5 overall respectively) Not every team hits on high draft picks, especially consistently. But, many of their top prospects were not top of the first round. Any team could have had them, showing Elias and company are expert talent evaluators. Who else has had these results since Elias took over in 2019?
Mayo-4th round, Ortiz 4th round, Norny 2md round
Westburg-Competive Balance 30 overall, Gunnar Henderson – 42 overall, Stowers-71 overall
Poolhalljunkies
Of the players mentioned only 2 have done anything of note in mlb..adley and gunnar..people are assuming alot of the rest
Tigers3232
@Pool True only two have really proven themselves at the MLB level. The others mentioned tho have been doing quite well in the Minors. Whereas many other prospects have taken their lumps. I find it hard not to give credit to O’s on the youngvtalent they ce amassed.
Poolhalljunkies
Thats fair ..its just a bit annoying to see people annoitting this group as the second coming ofvthe 27 yankees when collectively they arent even in the majors yet or if so havent had the chance to do much.
Peg2
What do Oriole fans think of possibly acquiring Nathan Eovaldi from the Rangers? He certainly is familiar with the AL East.
Sideline Redwine
I don’t see the Rangers trading Eovaldi. West is still up for grabs.
Tigers3232
I don’t see the Rangers ready to commit to being sellers to any extent right now. If they don’t get to 4 or 5 games behind in the Div and/or Wild Card I’d assume they will be.
They ve got a decent bit of talent for the next signed for a few years. Moving the likes of Scherzer, Eovaldi, Lorenzen, Yates, etc could bring a lot of young talent to bolster farm system. They could even try flipping some of them in offseason to reload for next year.
Tough situation for them. They ve struggled most of season, Astros until recently have looked pretty vulnerable and the M’s lineup is rather uninspiring. If I was running Rangers I’d be viewing 4 games as the decider factor in the days leading upto deadline.
dirtyjog
Has Holliday looked more like himself at the plate? Seems about the same to me….
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
He has, his obp is getting close to not .100 points higher than his batting average, but .200!
Keep up the walks
Acoss1331
Orioles have an enviable farm system, definitely wouldn’t mind if Getz makes a deal for any of the White Sox players the Orioles could have use for.
Sideline Redwine
wait…above, someone said it is a dumpster fire! And another chimed in that none of those prospects can pLaY deFenSe up the mIdDle. So really, they are not in such a good spot. Just going off what the experts say.
Samuel
Sideline Redwine;
A few of the hard-hitting OF’s are corner guys, But others can play CF. And the young middle infielders are extremely good defensively (heck, they traded Joey Ortiz to the Brewers as he was buried behind prospects – if they lose Adames to FA there is talk about Ortiz taking over SAs…..on a team that prioritizes defense) . In fact, the O’s #2 raked prospect is a 19 year-old Catcher! Adley is 26 years-old.
People that post on here read nonsense. Twist it and post it as if it’s factual. Some of us in the minority actually watch games.
Samuel
Too many position players. Not enough innings for all of them to get into rhythm. In particular the veterans: Santander, Hays, Urias, Mullins, and Mateo look totally lost…and Montcastle is heading in that direction.
O’s haven’t looked right since the beginning of the Rangers series. Playing around .500 baseball since then.
Sideline Redwine
sad thing is, my Rays would take any of those guys and slot them right into a starting spot. Hays in right, Santander DH (or vice versa), Mullins in center…okay, Urias and Mateo maybe not, but everyone else? (or maybe put Mateo at SS…)
Until the Rays realize that Jose Siri and Taylor Walls are a waste of roster spots, and figure out something to do with catching and DH, it’s rough. Real rough.
Tigers3232
I’m guessing Rays eye is more on the future than trying to squeeze into a Wild Card spot this season. I wouldn’t bet on that tho, their front office is like a miracle machine.
Samuel
Cleveland might part with a starting pitcher for Austin Hays. They could use an established RH-hitting run-producer that can play CF. Not sure what they’d give up as he’s a FA after 2025.
solaris602
Highly unlikely. CLE is in the market for at least one SP. They can’t afford to even trade one in the system who is struggling. O’s and Guardians don’t match up because both have a glut of infielders in their systems.
Blackpink in the area
We were discussing this last week I want to see a Holliday for Skubal trade. I think that would be in the best interest of both teams. Skubal would be awesome and make the Orioles the instant WS favorites. The Tigers need a long term shortstop. 1 for 1.
Motor City Beach Bum
I hope they don’t trade Skubal at all, but if they did, no way on 1 for 1. It would have to be Holliday plus. One of the sites I looked at the other day suggested Holliday and Norby OR Mayo, Kjerstad, Norby and I think it was McDermott (?) in a package for Skubal. I think that same article quoted Baseball Trade Values as saying Skubal was worth 95 and the package of players was worth 80? Multiple sites say unless someone blows the Tigers away with an offer (overpays) Skubal is not going anywhere. Those offers are not overpays to me. The only team I think might overpay is the Dodgers.
The Tigers can sign and graduate players for the positions those prospects would play and keep Skubal to compete next year. Jung or Bergman at 3B instead of Mayo. Kim at SS instead of Holliday and draft a freaking SS replacement for down the road tomorrow! They already have good OFers on the corners in Carpenter and Greene. Keith is at 2B already so Norby isn’t needed.
Trading Skubal means waiting 3 years for a rebuild on top of a rebuild. Tigers fans have waited long enough.
Blackpink in the area
1 for 1 that’s a fair deal. The Tigers biggest hole is shortstop. You want the best shortstop prospect in baseball with 6 and a half years of control left you trade Skubal. Skubal is only signed through 2026. 2024 is already a lost season. You give up 2 years where the Tigers probably weren’t going to be contenders anyways and hope Holliday becomes an elite player.
Motor City Beach Bum
Or not.
Blackpink in the area
You honestly think the Tigers can contend next year? It’s possible but it doesn’t look likely at all. Maybe 2026 but that seems like a long shot as well. Jackson Holliday might be the best player in baseball by 2027 when Skubal signs a massive contract. And he would still be under control for 3 more years past 2027.
Motor City Beach Bum
I do but I also respect your opinion on the 1 for 1 trade and see the logic. I just don’t agree. For me as a Tigers fan seeing Skubal win a Cy Young this year is worth it alone to keep him. I think they will sign or trade for bats and to fill holes this offseason. If they keep Skubal they have an ace to lead a promising staff next year in a winnable division.
Tigers3232
@Motor City I’d love to see Skubal stay with Tigers for a long time. I just don’t see any chance of him signing an extension tho.
When a player such as him signs with Boras I’d say there is a good chance they re eyeing cashing in. Now I believe any player would be very tempted to sign an early extension, but Skubal is now 2 years from maximizing his earning potential. I think the Tigers missed the window on extending him especially with his performance. Trading now is unfortunately probably the wise move.
stymeedone
I don’t really think the Guardians have the rotation depth to part with a starter. Now, if Baltimore is finally deciding that they can’t play ALL their prospects, Detroit may have some pitching to spare.
Rsox
O’s definitely have the prospects to get Tarik Skubal
Motor City Beach Bum
But the Tigers won’t trade him without an overpay and the O’s won’t do that. Flaherty on the other hand…
Rsox
Flaherty already didn’t pitch well for Baltimore but you never know…
Motor City Beach Bum
I highly doubt they make a play for him for just that reason. Cheers

“Holiday of course the consensus top prospect in all the sport” really ? Did anyone from the pirates concede that title preseason? Would the pirates have ever considered for a moment to trade Skeens for holiday ?
The consensus has been wrong 50% of the time as long as they been scouting prospects. Let’s stop considering as all knowing and just use their info to support our own conclusions
Blackpink in the area
Skenes is much older. Obviously he’s playing great but don’t write Holliday off based on 36 big league at bats.
kroeg49
Great example of an overrated Top #1, how about Yoan Moncada
Tigers3232
I don’t most are writing Holliday off. But what Skenes has done is surreal. And they are only about 1.5 yrs apart in age. So he’s really not all that much older.
As for all the people calling for Holliday to be traded, I’d say the return would have to be quite an over pay for them to seriously consider. Then maybe a bit more to get them past the apprehension.
Ra
How about Gunnar Henderson? Is your argument that most #1 prospects are overrated? Facts don’t support your belief.
Ra
There is rumor that a Holliday/Skenes trade was discussed. So yeah, it is possible/probable that the pirates considered some framework of a trade involving both players.
Blackpink in the area
It might have been discussed at one time but it’s not being discussed anymore that’s for sure.

All I said was it isn’t being discussed anymore. Because it’s not. I would say that’s what’s really pertinent……

It is being discussed now by the OP. I answered the question at hand and you insisted on throwing a hissy fit. “Would the pirates have ever considered…” Are you semi-literate, incapable of understanding simple English?

In-division trade with the Blue Jays. Bassitt, Kikuchi, Berrios or reunion with Gausman. All would be a different cost and probably won’t hurt them prospect-wise. But it will help the rotation.
Mariners_Mojo
Orioles should trade Holliday to the Mariners
User 401527550
For Rodriguez and Gilbert.
Ra
That’s not saying anything. You need to propose a trade scenario for the “should” claim. Should the Orioles trade Holliday for DFAed Mike Baumann. The answer is “No effin way.”
Bobby Mongan
There are teams and their GM’s waiting and hoping that Elias and the O’s will panic and over react to the situation they have from a pitching standpoint. But I would venture to say that those teams and individuals are wasting their time. Elias is not going to unload prized prospects and talent just to fill a spot either in the rotation or the bullpen. He is to smart to do that. Corbin Burnes may or may not be a rental but he was and is a top tier starter and Elias gave up talent to get his services however he did not give up what I am sure Milwaukee wanted him to.
MLBTR needs to hire editors
“Talented as the slugger is” IS NOT PROPER ENGLISH. You can’t leave “as” out to start the sentence, Deeds. It’s not optional. As a professional writer, you better be using correct grammar all the time, or make room for someone who will.
