Orioles To Acquire Trevor Rogers

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2024 at 1:15pm CDT

The Orioles are acquiring southpaw starting pitcher Trevor Rogers from the Marlins, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.  The Marlins will receive second baseman/outfielder Connor Norby in the deal, reports Robert Murray of FanSided.  Miami also gets outfielder Kyle Stowers, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Rogers marks the Orioles’ second recent rotation addition, after they acquired Zach Eflin from the Rays four days ago.  Rogers, 27 in November, owns a 4.53 ERA, 18.0 K%, 9.7 BB%, and 46.9% groundball rate in 105 1/3 innings this year.  Rogers has a 3.17 ERA over his last nine starts, but with no apparent improvement in his skills.

Rogers was at his best three years ago, when he made the All-Star team and finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting by posting a 2.64 ERA in 133 innings.  He averaged 94.6 miles per hour on his fastball that year, and looked like one of the game’s best young starters.  The lefty had a strong pedigree, as well, having been drafted 13th overall out of high school in 2017.

Things took a turn in 2022, as Rogers’ strikeout rate plummeted and he missed a month with lower back spasms.  That season also ended a bit early due to a lat strain.  2023 was worse, as Rogers’ season ended in April after four starts due to a left biceps strain and a partial tear in his right lat.

Rogers then entered the arbitration system, and is earning $1.53MM this year.  He remains under team control through 2026.  Rogers has avoided the IL thus far this year, but it’ll be up to Orioles pitching coach Drew French and the rest of the staff to attempt to help him regain his 2021 form.  Rogers’ average fastball velocity is down to 92.2 miles per hour this year, a notable 2.4 mile per hour drop from his one stellar season.

Having lost Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells to Tommy John surgery, the first-place Orioles have a rotation of Corbin Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez, Eflin, Dean Kremer, and Rogers.  Burnes and Means are eligible for free agency after the season, leaving Rodriguez, Kremer, and new additions Eflin and Rogers for 2025.

The Orioles had been connected to Garrett Crochet and Blake Snell, and could theoretically add one of them in the next three-plus hours, but are likely done with their rotation at this point.  Aside from Eflin and Rogers, Orioles executive vice president and GM Mike Elias also bolstered his bullpen by acquiring Seranthony Dominguez last week.

Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix did quite well in adding a pair of Major League-ready position players for two-plus years of Rogers.

Norby, 24, ranked 93rd on Baseball America’s top 100 prospects heading into the 2023 season.  Prior to this season, BA gave Norby a 50 grade, calling him a “bat-first second baseman” who can also handle left field.  The former 2021 second-rounder has spent most of the season repeating Triple-A, and has shown quite well with a 134 wRC+ in 80 games.  He’s gotten a few brief looks with the Orioles due to Jorge Mateo’s injuries, but has only played in nine big league games so far.  Norby is under the Marlins’ control through 2030 and will likely receive regular playing time at second base for the rest of the season.

Stowers, 26, was drafted by the Orioles in the second round out of Stanford in 2019.  Known for his big raw power from the left side, Stowers has been unable to secure regular playing time on the stacked Orioles since his 2022 debut.  Stowers, who is best-suited for right field, will get that chance with the Marlins.  Like Norby, Stowers has spent most of the season at Triple-A, posting a decent 115 wRC+.

If the Marlins did indeed come up with a pair of controllable regulars for a back-end starter in Rogers, it’ll be quite the win as Bendix makes his mark on the team.

At the time of this writing, Bendix still has three-plus hours remaining to further remake the Marlins, likely by dismantling his bullpen and possibly trading outfielder Bryan De La Cruz.  The team’s 2024 rotation is particularly bare with the departure of Rogers, leaving Edward Cabrera, Max Meyer, and Kyle Tyler.  Jesus Luzardo is working his way back from a lumbar stress reaction, Ryan Weathers is recovering from an index finger strain, and Braxton Garrett is on the IL for a forearm strain.  Next year, the team will get Sandy Alcantara and eventually Eury Perez back from Tommy John surgery.

We had great pitching. But we lost a CY contender got the next season plus in Bradish, a middle rotation starter in Means, a back end guy in Wells, and are still down that best closer in baseball in Felix. All out for the season and then some. Our staff was just utterly decimated by injury. We were in desperate need of depth. After decisive wins on the Efflin and Seranthony trades it’s ok that we may have taken a small L here, in the grand scheme of things.

He’s been better than average (per ERA+) only once in a season that included 18 IP or more, and that was his rookie season when he was RoY runner-up. Change of scenery could ignite something, but surprised at this haul for MIA who finally are cashing in some on their arms.

Wait – I thought he was already on the Os? Oh never mind, that was Cole Irvin, basically the same pitcher. You know, if you actually want to win this year, you MAY… MAY… want to upgrade your starting staff with more than just below average starters. If only they had minor league stars to trade… or huge farm system depth… oh – um… never mind again. Unless they get Skubal, Flaherty or someone who is an ACTUAL upgrade, they will continue to be a great offense with questionable starters.

I posted a similar sentiment on a previous thread. Not only do they have major league excess, they had Mayo, Basallo, Norby all blocked at the MLB level. Mateo and Uribe, both spare parts. Cowser or Kjerstad as well.
Go get an ace. Nope. Eflin and Rogers…..

Exactly my point Jerry. This is ridiculous. We get it Os, you want to prolong your window. But WINDOW MEANS NOTHING if you don’t win anything substantial. They have a great offense, along with 6 potential great infielders, 5 potential great outfielders, and only 2 starting pitchers, one of whom leaves after this year. This isn’t a difficult equation, but the Os keep making these types of moves.

Norby and Stowers gets Fedde yesterday, and Mayo / Basallo plus a couple others gets Skubal or Crochet. Do you want to win a WS or have a great regular season at Norfolk?

Interestingly, their record in Norfolk isn’t that impressive thus far. They aren’t even a .500 club. I was surprised when I saw that a few days ago. I figured they’d be crushing the competition with all that talent down there.

Norby likely would not have been a solid big leaguer for Baltimore. There is not enough space to play him. Everyone always looks at these top 30 prospect lists and forget that there are only 9 players on the field at a time. Good teams will only have 1 or maybe 2 spots for rookies. The rest will be part time players, bench players, or stuck in the minors. For good teams, prospects are nothing more than currency.

So they probably should have just cut him then, right hiflew?
Everyone understands that only 9 can play, the point is to maximize your assets, and trading Norby + Stowers for an average pitcher who seems eerily similar to Irvin who they already have, just doesn’t make sense.

          Take a deep breath.

The price of pitchers this deadline is astronomical.

No team is trading a top 15 prospect that they control for 6 years – especially a small market team that has limited revenues to extend their players – to get a rental starter.

In a sane world Rodgers isn’t worth one of Norby or Stowers.

Kudos to Peter Bendix and his staff – Kim Ng would never have pulled off something like this. And it’s not just this move. The Marlins may well prove to be the winner of the 2024 trade deadline. This is Rays-esque.

No- this isn’t the end of the world for the Os, it just isn’t a good use of their valuable assets unless you have the “Mike Elias is God” blinders on.
Rogers is similar enough to Irvin that they should not have given up 2 of their top 2 prospects for him. Enough said – and I’m breathing just fine ;0)

And btw – over the last 3 years, his ERA is 4.92, his FIP is 4.36, fewer Ks than IP, more Hs than IP, just nothing to love here.
Over the same time, Cole Irvin had an ERA of 4.31, FIP of 4.38, fewer Ks than IP and more Hs than IP (in a more difficult ballpark to pitch in).

Hiflew, they had announced Norby as the everyday 2B moving forward, with the Mateo injury.

This leaves them very thin in the infield. Left side they have Urias, Henderson, Westburg. That’s it. No bench to replace any of those guys. So they will have to make a corresponding move and recall either Holliday or add Mayo to the 40 and give him his debut to cover the righty bat need. I would bet it’s Mayo that gets the call – subtracting Norby leaves the big league roster with McCann, Mountcastle, Westburg, Urias and… Pache as right handers. Only two of those are above average hitters. One is exactly average, and two are well below. So they need a righty now more than ever, and have parted with Hays & Norby with no RH in the immediate depth chart…

Samuel, take your thumb, put it in the middle of your chair, leave it there, and squat right on top of it. Baltimore has only subtracted one position player from their active roster today, and it is one of very few righties when they are known to be placing an emphasis on needing righties. So any logical baseball fan would assume that another righty infielder gets called up to take that roster spot, not another lefty. Hence Mayo.

Norby was the 2b of the future with Henderson at short, Westburg at third and Mayo at first. This trade greatly changes the path going forward as well as the depth in the organization…which is fine if you get a needed top of the rotation starter or a closer, but not if you get a #5 starter/long reliever type of guy.

Basallo ? Holliday? Norby wasn’t the future anywhere. He’s been blocked and was going to be a 2B/LF short side platoon player long term.

It’s a great haul for Rogers but he wasn’t the future.

Was this the starter the Orioles had in mind to stand next to Burnes as the one two if so, that is kind of weak. Rogers was only seen as a 4 maybe a 5 starter according to some of the articles I read this past spring.

Hiflew, agreed. This guy is lighting up the boards on x getting y but he’s still living in a 2024 preseason world. The market changes and you’ve got to exist within that paradigm. The Big Hurt’s baseball IQ seems to fall off a cliff after his sweet sweet handle (Thomas was among my absolute faves as a kid).

Another possibility, just throwing it out there, is that you, hiflew and Samuel are living on Elias’ jock and struggling to be objective. Agreed that the market has changed, and at least Brew makes a really good point about the timeframe being a big difference between, but it doesn’t mean that Rogers is an upgrade to the Os staff.
They now have a 1 for next year, and four 5s. Surprising with their incredible offensive depth.
I’m not ‘smarter than the Os front office’, but I do get to have an opinion (like you all), and this is the first odd move that I think Elias has made.

There is no possibility that that is the case. Perhaps you only think it’s odd due to a lack of knowledge. There’s a reason fangraphs had Norby as our #16 prospect. In fact there are several. They grade him as a below average hitter and poor defender. And that is supported by the fact he struck out 27% of the time at AAA this season. He’s got some pop, obviously, but I don’t think the Orioles wanted to be married to a .250 hitter with 15-20 homers and well below average defense at the keystone. Bottom line is that he wasn’t a big future piece as his prospect star has dimmed from his declining play this season (you’ll need to look beyond the box score, which is what the professionals do and why he was included in this deal). Lazy fanboys like to make sweeping statements they’ll never have to back up but we adults like to actually analyze a situation and make determinations based upon facts and evidence rather than gut based upon tremendously outdated prospect rankings.

Put on your thinking cap for a second…If that was the case that deal would have been made. And after the Astros ponied up last night the price went up. Further, Stowers is intriguing but that’s all. He’s 27 and just doesn’t get on base enough for any contending team in a corner OF spot. So many orioles fans were viewing him as a legitimate asset but obviously the market disagreed.

Florida’s front office disagreed, and Stowers will be playing in their OF, while Norby will be playing in their IF. Yes, Baltimore has better players in their lineup currently, but that doesn’t mean prospects that are blocked should be discounted. Florida was happy to get them on the cheap.

I think it’s more for next year. Burnes is probably gone. Who knows when Bradish, Means, and Wells return. Rogers is a more than serviceable starter who maybe the Os think can unlock something with a new pitching staff. Still a lot to give up and not really a move that helps them win a WS this year. Not thrilled about it, mainly because of the price.

Means is a FA. This was a very good deal for the Os, looking to both the present and future. Norby’s 27% K rate and brutal defense make him a mediocre piece at best and is why fangraphs ranked him as our 16th prospect. I don’t think this is the guy that saves our season but this was a pretty good trade for us and, given the market, Elias has done an outstanding job adding important pieces around the edges without sacrificing any notable prospect capital.

If the Yankees lose Judge or Soto for any extended period of time then the orioles will run away with the division. Basically, the Os did West they needed to to put themselves in the position to take advantage of the Yankees deeply flawed roster construction.

This idiotic 12 teams qualify for a WC means that any team that’s not rebuilding or has suffered multiple major injuries is a playoff contender…..where their fans think “anything can happen”. This was a much smarter move than a Taillon add. The orioles already added money in Eflin; doing the same for another 3/4 would have been potentially financially crippling. This way we get a guy with more ceiling – though probably a lower floor as well if we’re being objective – but at minimal expense such that we can add at the deadline/ in the offseason much easier. The Os are just playing chess at such a level that casual fans can’t comprehend why their checkers brains don’t get the moves.

Marlins let him give up 8 runs in 2 1/3 innings May 7th, brought his ERA from 4.31 to 6.15. In the 14 starts since, his given up no more than 4 in a game (3 times)

Thank you, someone that’s not a knee-jerking clown. If you have watched him this year (and I have), you can see he’s starting to dial in it much better lately and the results are starting to show.

YES, I believe his velo is still down about a mph or so, but he has still showing promising progression.

Thanks for a good analysis instead of the trite “Orioles got robbed’ and “he stinks’ madness.

But the O’s still need a closer. Does anyone want to see Kimbrel stumble and stagger his way through the rest of the season leaving blown saves and losses in his wake? BAL simply cannot leave their biggest screaming need unaddressed.

So the O’s give up this for Rogers and the best the Sox can do for Fedde, who’s better, is Vargas and a couple A-ballers and he had to throw in Kopech, Pham, and cash to make even that happen?

    And Stowers? Wow.

100% why the hell would they give up Norby for a pitcher with an ERA of 5.50, 4.00, and 4.50 the last 3 seasons? Roger’s will be in the bullpen at some point while with the Orioles. They 100% got robbed.

I think BAL still trades for a RP before the deadline.
Kimbrel skills are fading. Better used as a set up man

The potential of the 2 players BAL gave up have a wide range of course. You can only play 9 on the field, 26 man roster, 40 man roster etc. to protect from Rule 5. International Rule $.

BAL is in 3rd inning of HOU like ascent maybe.
Making WS 2 or 3 times in the next 6 years.

Rogers if he stays healthy (NO TJ etc.) could be essentially #2.5- 3.5 starter type plus LH are usually more valuable He is only age 27 and low salary 1.5M

BAL offense should be in Top 10. Play good defense and some speed.

May lose Santander and Mullins to FA in 2025
They would have to pay Burnes alot of $ to keep also

A team to compete with LAD machine for the next 5-7 years

So many people are freaking out as if this was a substantial overpay but in this market we just got a back end SP with 2.5 years of control for a 27 year old fourth OFer type and one legit but non top 100 prospect in Norby. Norby’s bat will play and it hurts to give him up but Stowers is not a real prospect anymore. He’s just a corner OFer with some pop who doesn’t get on base. You don’t get something for nothing and we added a cost controlled starter in an extreme sellers market without giving up multiple valuable pieces. The people reacting purely to this are (1) ignoring market realities, and (2) drastically overvaluing Stowers. Incorrect opinions about Stowers value is of course going to cause fans to err in their analysis of the trade.

Stowers might K 40% of the time in the majors. Norby too. Neither may amount to anything.

I just figured we’d get more for Norby. Defensively challenged hitter with K issues though. I don’t know if these few MLB AB’s solidified Elias’ thinking that he won’t be very impactful at this level or not. But we shall see.

I’m surprised like everyone else but I don’t hate this move. all the whining about the O’s hoarding their prospects and how they were going to over-ripen in Norfolk… you can’t have it both ways.

“trade or don’t trade, there is no try.” -Yoda Berra

seriously, I do wish that Rogers was making his next flight with Tanner Scott back to Baltimore but I guess Elias couldn’t swing that. Another high leverage bullpen piece would be good. or two… although the clock is ticking. if they can get a decent set up guy AND Ryan Yarborough who was just DFA’d by the Dodgers, that’d be ideal as they could send Cionel Perez down to Norfolk and replace him with the former southpaw Ray/Dodger.

this has been a wild trade deadline. Flaherty, Robert, Scott, Garrett Crochet all still with their clubs. 3 hours to go.

I would have liked to see them get a bit more, like Taillon, for Stowers and Norby. The Marlins could have just picked up 2 every day, above average position players under team control for several years – great for them.
I see Rogers as average right now. I wince at the comparisons to Irvin because I am not an Irvin fan.
But if you look at it a different way, Stowers was blocked from regular playing time on the Orioles so he adds little value to 2024’s team and Norby didn’t seem to be a favored option either…and if the Orioles find a way to boost Rogers back toward 2021 form, this adds value. Say Rogers comes in game 3 of ALDS and pitches 7 innings and gives up 1 or 2 runs in a W, I think the trade looks better.
I would have liked to see more, but this tells me price tag was way too high on Skubal and Crochet, and the Orioles got antsy.
So it looks great for the Marlins and a big TBD for the Orioles – its just a lot on paper.

A lot can also be said for the environment. Roger’s at his best has never had a winning record in Miami. The mindset of playing for a team that isn’t in perpetual sell mode has to do something for the confidence. Plus, his numbers the last 3 months have been solid. He’s not in the class of Burnes, but a far cry better than Kramer or Povich. The cost for TOR guys has to be insane right now

Again, Marlins looking for all of the 2nd baseman apparently over the last 10+ years…

Seemingly hits, but strikes out a lot, though the Marlins are desperate for offensive impact, so that’s fine. Hasn’t looked good in short sample size, but being honest, aim surprised the Marlins were able to get as much as they did in this deal, with what I was saying earlier in the day…

Stowers hopefully gives them some type of immediate impact, though it seems as though he has been up and down the last couple of years

Trev hasn’t been the same since the tragedy a few years ago, and now he has totally lost his fastball, and can’t get away with the stuff he did before, as he never really had great command. He was someone that going into the season I didn’t want to trade back in November, hoping he would find some of his lost stuff, and potentially turn around, but he has lost even more off his fastball and the finish to his pitches, so while you’re hoping to avoid an Andrew Miller situation by getting rid of him now and someone potentially helping him find his stuff, but he also could have very little to no value left if things go any more south, and the Marlins aren’t able to trade the other pitchers they should have traded months ago either, so this at least brings back some value…

And as I said, I’m surprised they got what they got. I figured maybe they’d get a couple of international guys that hadn’t come over to the states yet, and maybe a middish level guy…

Of course, I could see this looking bad for them if he can find some of his stuff, b/c he has 2+ years of control left, and this otherwise seems more like a rental return, but in terms of direction going forward, like the other moves, it makes sense

B for Baltimore. They traded from quality surplus that doesn’t hurt their future. In this market they paid a fair price. Rogers has 2 more years. That cost $. They aren’t looking at his era. When they look at Rogers they really like what they see.

C for Miami. They did well and got fair value. No premium positions or defenders but 20 hr power guys.

Anyone feel differently now that the biggest name pitcher to move today was Flaherty to the Dodgers? Those guys who people were salivating over all remain with bad to mediocre teams and didn’t move to contenders.

I’m going to say Irvin production is a bad outcome scenario for Rogers and he’s most likely to do better. Norby and Stowers being blocked prospects were adding no value to the MLB club this year or next, it will be interesting to see what they do in FLA given PT.
