Diamondbacks Place Ketel Marte On Injured List

By Darragh McDonald | August 19, 2024 at 3:45pm CDT

The Diamondbacks announced that second baseman Ketel Marte has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left ankle. Infielder/outfielder Pavin Smith has been recalled as the corresponding move.

Marte has been battling an ankle injury for over a week now. Last Saturday, when playing the Phillies, catcher Garrett Stubbs slid into second while trying for a hustle double. Marte received the throw coming in from left field and tried to apply a tag to Stubbs when the two collided but his leg got stuck awkwardly underneath the Philly catcher (video from MLB.com).

Arizona’s second baseman was removed from that game in obvious pain but has tried to play through the injury since then. He was in the lineup for last Monday’s game but appeared to be in pain again and was removed from that contest. He then missed a few days but returned to the lineup on Saturday, serving as the designated hitter. Yesterday, he wasn’t in the starting lineup but entered as a pinch-hitter but appeared to aggravate his injury on a check swing and was removed before finishing his at-bat.

After those failed attempts to stay on the field, he will now spend at least ten days on the shelf. Manager Torey Lovullo doesn’t seem too concerned, per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com on X, saying that they believe it’s a low-grade sprain and that Marte just needs some rest. Whether he needs to miss more than the 10-day minimum or not remains to be seen, but it’s a huge blow to the Diamondbacks regardless as Marte has been putting himself into the MVP conversation with a stellar season.

Marte has 30 home runs this year and a 10.4% walk rate, while limiting his strikeouts to a 17.8% clip. His .298/.370/.560 batting line translates to a 152 wRC+, indicating he’s been 52% better than league average at the plate. Only ten qualified major leaguers have a better mark than that this year. He’s also stolen six bases and received strong grades for his defense at the keystone. Only six players have more wins above replacement than his 5.4 this year, per FanGraphs. Francisco Lindor and Shohei Ohtani are the only two National League players ahead of him there.

Subtracting that kind of production would hurt any team, but the Snakes also have Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno on the injured list at the moment, meaning they head into this week without three of their best regulars.

The D’backs have been playing very well of late and currently sport a record of 69-56. They are only four games back of the Dodgers in the West and have possession of the second National League Wild Card spot, but teams like Atlanta, the Mets and others are in striking distance. The Snakes will be trying to stay ahead of that pack in the coming weeks but will be doing so without Marte, Walker or Moreno on the roster, and it’s unclear when any of those three could be returning to the club.

Kevin Newman has been playing a lot of second base in Marte’s stead in the past week and may continue doing so. He’s a solid defender but has hit .262/.305/.361 in his career for a 78 wRC+. His .281/.314/.382 batting line this year is slightly better but still translates to a subpar 92 wRC+.

Smith’s recall is likely just about giving the club an extra bat, as he’s only played first base and the outfield in his career. Blaze Alexander is likely the club’s current backup at the three positions to the left of first base, supporting Newman, Geraldo Perdomo and Eugenio Suárez.

As a diehard dbacks fan they deserve so much credit. They have lost 5 starters 3 all star players in walker marte and moreno. It’s crazy to see us do what we are doing when you the division we have.

Yeah, they have had their more than fair share of injuries, but you can look at other NL teams they are in the same boat. ATL just lost Riley added on to the other injuries., LA, SD have there share to, so it’s going to be one heck of race coming down to the wire. Right now, just want them to start playing solid ball again. Start another 2 out 3 streak.

Respectfully, Riley wasn’t playing as a MVP favorite like Marte who was giving Ohtani a good run for preventing the first ever DH MVP.

The Braves have also played almost the entire season without Acuña, and half the season without Albies. That’s an MVP-caliber guy and a perennial All-Star guy lost for a huge part of the year. Not to mention losing Strider for the year and multiple IL stints for Max Fried.

yeah, but they were supposed to be great, top team in the league even. after recalculating expectations for losing all the players every team has, the dbacks are in a quite impressive spot. i feel similarly about the mets, although outside of senga they really have had a good amount of injury luck. dbacks had their top 3 starters out, all at the same time.

Good point. I wasn’t trying to take anything away from the Dbacks. I’d definitely be excited for the future if I was a fan of theirs.

They were due for a letdown, but geez louise i did not expect the way they played these last three games. Now Marte is out, I would of place him on the IL 3 days ago.
I have one bone to pick with the D’Backs management, putting Martinez in the clutch moments, he lets his emotions get the better of himself, I say drop him down to the 6 and 7th inning he is not suited for a closer position not yet. Not until he becomes way more consistent. Rather see Ginkel, in the ninth, and hopefully in 2025 they pursue a legit closer, this bullpen by committee does not work never have never will.

@LetsGoDBacks that’s because the team wanted to see if he could start. That experiment started in college right before he hurt himself. Now that its over, he’ll be on the fast track. He’ll be a bullpen option early in 2025 for the MLB club. Probably 2026 before either he or Martinez is ready for a closer’s role, but we’ll have Drey Jameson and Ginkel in the meantime.

Yeah, but ever since Sewald started stinking, it seems every other possible option has started stinking in the 9th too. Ginkel faltered in the past as well. Maybe they should try Puk but my guess is that soon we will see Sewald closing out again.

They have done just a great job surviving the injuries but man o man how much more can they take. The defensive issues with Walker and Moreno out are becoming more and more evident. Also it’s not being talked about super much because the team has been so hot but Zac Gallen not looking like Zac Gallen staring to show through. An ERA of 4.86 and a WHIP of over 1.6 are not good signs at all.

There are D-Backs blogs that mention it a lot. Zac wasn’t that good either during last year’s playoffs either. Good pitcher, but definitely not the ace we hope him to be.

My favorite part about being a dbcaks fan is talking to Dodgers fans about how close we are to them and the response I always get is Injuries and can 100% turn it back around on them, Monty, Erod, Gallen, Kelly, Walker, Moreno, Marte, Perdomo, and even a couple bull pen arms. Even after a loss I don’t get mad anymore, it’s baseball but man is it fun to watch them play.

Tell the correct story – Marte was incorrectly defending 2nd Base as if he was a 1st Baseman making a force out!
